Treasure Island Comics is easily one of my top 10 favorite comic shops. Their back issue selection is incredible with rows of long boxes packed with everything from Silver Age classics to modern and recent current releases. I could spend hours just digging and is easy to navigate. Their graphic novel section is just as strong, thoughtfully curated with top writers and artists kept in mind. The weekly new release selection is always on point, I love walking that wall of newly released comics and finding something new. Alex, the owner, is genuinely kind and approachable. Great organization and selection of comics, seems to be very focused on the books and not so much random merchandise, which I appreciate. I ordered the latest SAGA trades and the owner took my info down to place and order and notify me of arrival. He kept to his word, called, and left a voicemail right away... I think it arrived it less than a week. The prices were great, and the owner is passionate about comics (and the spice of life). Was headed to east bay depot cafe & stumbled across this comic book shop. Realized it's the same folks who used to be on Mowry. Parking was easy and the space is clean and roomy. Kind of an industrial feel and a huge selection of comic books & graphic novels. There's not like a gaming space or a ton of collectibles if you're into that, but overall glad they're still here in Fremont & a great place for comic enthusiasts. read more

decently priced comics, cool organization, service was poor. the worker at the cash register got visibly upset over my partner taking pictures within the store, we never had issues like this prior. we felt it was appropriate due to the location being mostly empty, there was only one other person kneeling down looking through a bin on the lower level. we had initially enjoyed the space, but felt extremely awkward leaving. there was no visibly big signs stating no photography. once again, nice place with nice prices. we got what we wanted, just felt uncomfortable leaving. won't return again. read more

My wife and I had a great experience here. I'm already looking forward to my next visit. I see us being repeat customers. The shop was a little difficult to find as it isn't really visible from the street, but it is worth the little fight with Google Maps, haha. Treasure Island Comics is located at the end of a red brick multi-unit structure, situated somewhat parallel to the Amtrak train stop. The outside may be easy to miss because it looks like the garage of an auto-shop at first. I'm glad that we circled the streets a few times to find it because the shop owner Alex was fantastic. I had messaged him directly about a 6 issue comic book series releasing issues from now, April 2021, through July 2021. I came in to discuss the potential for preordering. It is important to me to buy local as much as possible, especially during the pandemic and I wanted him to know he could count on my purchase. Alex was really accommodating about my fluctuating schedule in relation to his order pick-up policy. He made my wife and I feel welcome, which we don't always get to experience as gay people. We shared some pleasant small talk about life, art, and the importance of representation. It was just an overall positive first visit, so much so that I made it a point to buy some things then and there just to support his business immediately while waiting for my preorders to come in. If you're new to comics like I am (my collecting background is in manga, figures, and pins), Alex and his store are a great local resource to support. Side note for those who may be concerned with pandemic-time shopping procedures: Alex was masked and I believe customers are expected to come in masked as well. There was some hand sanitizer available by the register. The place was well lit, super organized, and clean. Due to the physical garage structure of the shop, it's also well ventilated. This place isn't exactly close to where I live or work anymore, but I still trek there every month. Why? This place knows how to treat its customers with the EXCEPTIONAL customer service. Emphasis on the word exceptional. I would like to think I've been to about 100 comic stores in my life, and I have to say this one has had the best customer service out of the entire bunch. Plus, the store is very neat and organized. I don't feel like I'm shuffling through someone's basement or being watched the entire time I'm browsing. I feel like I'm actually in a store which is how I'm supposed to feel. Plus, Alex will pretty much order anything they don't have in stock. The overall friendliness and the way they greet and talk to us and all the customers is great. Came in here with my family and was not greeted warmly, decided to walk out with my mom cause the vibes were not it. my sister and dad felt like the guy was super rude and obnoxious after staying for a couple of minutes. They really wanted to buy something but felt uncomfortable. I don't know if it was just a bad day for him. Treasure island comics is one of those places I'm glad to see stand the test of time in Fremont. I shopped there as a child and now with my children it's a place we all look forward to visiting for book runs. Alex and the staff are an awesome bunch of guys. My kids are rather young with preferences for the gory and macabre. I for the most part let them grab what they wish (they're reading at levels beyond their age groups I'm happy, don't judge). Alex and his staff understand this well, and at times have warned me about a purchase or two before it was made that may have been a bit too extreme for the kids. Nothing but 5 stars for T.I.C. Everything is fairly priced and the guys that work there are friendly and help full! The lay out of the store is easy to navigate and figure out where stuff is. I asked an employee what would he recommend for someone who likes Batman, Horror, magic etc. He started asking all these questions like what movies I liked and what I've read before and recommend several books and I ended up picking up the trade paperback Constantine the Hellblazer vol1 and I was immediately hooked I went back to buy vol2 shorty after. Easily the coolest comic book shop I've ever been to. The store itself is clean, organized and well lit, not ridiculously over decorated to the point that it feels like you can't see anything through all the visual noise. But their secret weapon is definitely their employees. They're super knowledgeable, friendly, they don't mind you hanging out and chatting it up. No weird vibes or pressure to buy like you might find at other establishments, and they're also quick to look something up if they don't have it in store. Plus, they know how to make a reading list better than any algorithm. I've been introduced to some of my most favorite graphic novels through these guys: WicDiv, Saga, Sex Criminals, Descender, Paper Girls - the list goes on. I only work in fremont and my hours are their hours so I don't get to shop there often, but it's the only place I buy comics these days. read more

If I could give this place zero stars I would. Arriving here, I was actually pretty excited to see what they had here. My boyfriend and I love to collect DC comics//figurines, etc so every place we stumble upon we are like a kid in a candy store. I ask the guy who was working there, ( looking at previous reviews his name is "Alex J") I asked if he carried back issued action comics from the 50-60s and his response is "yes, but they are very expensive" I then say, "Yes, I know that's fine" So he goes to the back room of the store and brings out a big box of comics. First of all that response of "they're expensive" was unnecessary. I'm not some poor person off the street or just someone who cant afford things. In fact the most "expensive" action comic book you had in there was no more than 30 bucks, so please explain how thats soooooo pricey hahaha. Judging your customers is first off the WRONG thing to do, second learn basic customer service skills which indeed you lack, and third get off your cell phone and computer while working. Its rude and unprofessional. If you hate what you do, then change it. If you don't want to be there working, then hire some other friendly people that actually enjoy what they do because certainly it shows you don't. Horrible experience, never returning. So to those who enter in the future, please note the following: be aware of being judged, looked down upon, and the things you like to collect arent good enough/worthless. This comic book store is clean and bright, which automatically puts it heads above the comic stores that I grew up with. However, since this is the only comic book store in Fremont that I know of, I wish it had better selection. There are practically no indie graphic novels or manga, and a lot of what they do have is sealed so that you can't look at it. When I've been there, there were several young men grouped around the front counter loudly discussing various subjects (once, when I was there, one of them was loudly pontificating about how you should just leave dogs out in the cold and the rain because they're dogs and don't deserve to be treated nicely -- it was really annoying), creating an atmosphere that is not that friendly if you have questions or even want to approach the counter to buy something. I go all the way to Berkeley to shop at Comic Relief for my graphic novels and comics. They are the best comic shop in the east bay, and more places should look to them as an example. I should add that I work in the comic book industry as an editor, and it pains me to see any confirmation of negative stereotypes in comic book stores. But I guess they're stereotypes for a reason. read more

So this is based on a visit that I made circa 2013 I was a pissed off pregnant woman who was really nauseated and chewing ginger (which works btw). I had such a classic "girl in a comic book store" experience my first and only time in. I was really impressed with the variety of books. They even had some "black sad" which I considered pretty rare at the time. My tastes are more like the lowest common denominator. Super hero books and some hellboy. Anyway I happened to buy a hellboy book that day and got a lot of. "That's not for you right?" From some of the dudes in front. Chuckle chuckle haha. "Yeah it is" was my pissed off response. And then the guy who I assume was the owner totally started back pedaling asking me if I like mignola's work and if I read BPRD. And we had an awkward little conversation. I took my hellboy. Forgot my ginger and owner was really nice and returned it to me when he found me in the restaurant next door. I think he may have had to search through a few restaurants because there are more than one. Maybe because it was the hundredth time this had happened to me I was extra mad. But it was sure helpful to demonstrate to hubs that I wasn't making it up. I could've just used Amazon and bought a trade online. Actually it's half the reason why I have an Amazon prime account -to avoid comic book stores. And when I wanted the soule she-hulk run that's exactly where my business went for example. But I also believe in supporting small businesses. Especially comic stores which are endangered species really. So I added my stuff to my cousin's pull list. He goes every Wednesday picks up the stuff and I don't have to deal with comic book stores and I still get single issues in a timely manner. (Or what'd pass for timely when it comes to the sandman overture). I'm a busy mom. I've got stuff to do and my kid would ruin everything or chew on everything within arms reach. My mom taught the kid how to tear paper for fun. Who does that?! Kid's not going to the comic book store until at least four no matter how cute his baby cosplay is. So minus four stars for sexism. But one of you earned one of the stars back by being extra nice. And extra stars for selection. I always get what I want-no matter who gets it for me. read more

The employees are so friendly and nice, always willing to make conversation and suggestions. They don't give off that "I know more than you" vibe that some comic book shops do. I really like the layout of the store, it's not cluttered and it's easy to find what you are looking for. Good selection of books :) my husband utilizes the subscription service every week - he tells them what books he wants regularly and they set them aside for him each Wednesday, ready for him to pick up. I started going to Treasure Island Comics a few years ago when I started getting back into collecting. I immediately found the staff to be helpful and friendly, and over the years I've had nothing but good experiences shopping here. I've read another Yelper's review stating that the store is "bland" and "boring". Personally, I thought the store was probably one of the more pleasant comic shops I've been to, since they were organized VERY well, and everytime I've looked for something it was really easy to find it myself (rather than have to ask for assistance). I hate it when you walk into a comic shop and the place is chaotic or cramped. I've been to some where the "new" comics are displaced in different sections of the shop, with no discernible organization whatsoever. Thankfully, Treasure Island keeps things tidy by having all the new comics front and center (well, off to the left, but you get what I mean), while the back issues are kept in the rear of the shop. It's also very spacious inside, so you won't have to go shoulder-to-shoulder with folks to get to what you want. As another Yelper had mentioned, the walls of the store are covered in very few posters, which I personally don't find anything wrong with. If anything, it gives a more professional feel and look to the place. I personally think it's nice every now and again to walk into a comic shop without it feeling like you've stumbled into a 5 year old Asian kid's bedroom covered in wall to wall posters, anime and figurines. I very recently moved to Santa Clara, so I unfortunately I may not be back at Treasure Island for a while. However, for those of you in the Fremont area, I strongly suggest checking them out. I first came to this store not really knowing anything about the comic book industry since 96'. I guess you can put me into the category of comic "noob". That being said, this store is the perfect place for "noobsters". The best titles and stories "that actually sell" are on the stands. What better way to be introduced to comics than to have the best selections narrowed down? On top of that, the store has got "pick of the weeks" and recommendations. Ive been to other stores, and anyone "new" can tell you that sometimes too many choices isnt always a good thing. In-N-Out Burgers and there simple but quality selections is a prime example of this. If your not happy with the amount of selections, go somewhere else or at least ask to order the titles you want. No business owner would order titles unless he/she saw a certain demand for them. Im not sure what the previous reviews were complaining about unhelpful or even unfriendly service. Ive experienced exceptional service every time Ive walked through the doors. There is always some kind of conversation going on either between employees or customers. THAT is as friendly as business can get. Good customers relations. The guys working there know their stuff and definitely wouldn't hesitate to help you out. The store is clean, open, and well -organized. Yady, yady yah. This place kicks ass! I've been shopping here ever since Alex bought out the old place and moved over! Not only is his place convienent, but everyone that works there is cool to deal with. I've never had any problems with anyone being rude or snobbish. These guys know their stuff about books! Also, they arent all about books either. Politics, news, wierd shit and MMA are discussed in the store all the time. Its a great mix. I don't actually read or buy comics but I go to Treasure Island with the boyfriend regularly. I go along to browse and chat with Alex when he's there. The business is great. Staff is always friendly and helpful. It's a great example of how a business should be run. The staff there seems to know their customers well and is always engages with the customers whether it's about family, sports, or random things that come up. The boyfriend usually finds what he is looking for. If not, TIC can order it. I actually bought something there two Christmases ago. They had to order it for me and it came in time for the holidays. Took me a couple times to figure that out even though they are clearly labeled. Most other back issues are newer not sure if they have additional back issues. Some toys and trades but not many.
