We bought a kitchen full of cabinets. They did an excellent job and highly recommend. Cost more money so save up your dimes, quarters and dollars up to go here. It's well worth it. Did I choke at the price? Yes, but 18 months later it's forgotten. They did some custom work the big box guys never could've done. Quality is worth the price and my wife is HAPPY so we got that going. I wanted to get an old 60's sports car but the little lady said we spend 3x a day in here. Let's make it nice. We had a complete kitchen remodel. We had issues with the paint from day one. They took the doors and some drawers back twice to try and make it right. We are still having issues, very similar to the other reviews. I have called the owner and left 2 voicemails and he is completely ghosting me. If you want to be able to feel comfortable in your kitchen and not have anxiety every time a splash or spill occurs-then don't go with this company. The cabinet doors and drawers seem to be made out of MDF, which is extremely water absorbent and if anything gets on them even after cleaning it up right away- they will warp. When i called to bring this to their attention, they act as if we take our doors and drawers, and submerge them in water and asked "well, don't you clean the spills up right away?!" I didn't want it to get to this but they are unwilling to help. I don't want this to happen to anyone and I want to warn those who have children, grandchildren or any people who love hosting to look somewhere else.... or you will have anxiety every time you're in you kitchen. read more

We like Tri-Star very much and recommend their work. We redid our kitchen 20 years ago so this is a very dated review, but we suspect Tri-Star still does the same excellent work. When we redid our kitchen we worked mostly on the new appliances, and then wanted custom cabinets to fit around all the other stuff. Tri-Star did it very nicely. They sent out a guy who came up with the floor plan and made excellent recommendations as to what we could have and what would look nice. He added two things we never thought of, and revised our island to look even better. We reviewed the plan and approved it and waited. On the appointed day everything arrived, everything fit together nicely, and it looked wonderful. While custom cabinets from Tri-Star are relatively expensive, they are also beautiful. Even though it has been 20 years since we had the cabinets installed, they still look great and do not look dated. We needed some touchup stain for the cabinets so we went back. While they didn't have the exact match, they put something together to satisfy our needs. We still recommend this place. read more

We purchased our cabinets from Tri Star just over a year ago and couldn't be more satisfied! Fantastic customer service every step of the way ... from the initial visit to their showroom, John coming to our home to measure, to the design plan (which we made changes to at the very last minute!), everyone has been professional, friendly, and helpful. Follow up service has been great as well. Visited them more than once to get additional shelves, very accommodating. The cabinets needed to be adjusted after being installed by our contractor, they came out and took care of it, no questions asked. The cabinets have been in place almost a year, and needed some minor adjustments due to normal settling. Mike came out this week, was fast and efficient, and even gave me a quick tutorial and how to do it myself if it was ever needed down the road. My apologies to Mike's co-worker for forgetting his name, who was just as helpful. Haven't even mentioned yet how much we LOVE our cabinets ... high quality, tons more room, shelves are super easy to adjust, and the cabinets look absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Tri Star put my original cabinets in 25 years ago and now I needed an update. We considered many different solutions but decided to put in new drawers and doors. It turned out fabulous. We had a good sales experience and in the end, we got a cabinet. Our order was a single bar cabinet to match the cabinets Tri-Star did for our home several years ago for the prior homeowners. The cabinet was finished within the window promised, but it took some time to get it delivered. In parallel with this project we had our kitchen cabinets repainted and because of the lead time with this additional cabinet we asked Tri-Star to paint the cabinet prior to delivery. Both Tri-Star and our painters used Sherwin-Williams paint so while I was prepared for a less than 100% match, what we received with our new cabinet was nowhere near close. I sent photos to Tri-Star and I was surprised to find out they use the Sherwin-Williams formula but they actually mix everything on-site. This was not something that was disclosed to me knowing about our other project and clearly could have produced a very different result. Funny enough, the extra paint they provided upon delivery of the cabinet for touch-ups didn't even match what was on our cabinet. They refused to reimburse me for the paint cost claiming what they did was a "superior product" than what Sherwin-Williams themselves make. We ultimately had to spend another ~$500 for pickup/delivery and repaint of our new cabinet. On top of all of this, when we got the cabinet installed, our carpenter discovered the entire front frame was warped which added complexity to the installation and fitting of our beverage cooler which was factored into our cabinet's build. This could not have happened in our home or even when the cabinet got repainted. New Lenox wasn't exactly convenient for us, but we used Tri-Star given they had done the original cabinets that came with our home. I would not use them for any future needs. read more

They looked great when installed, and the process of designing went well however after owning these cabinets for 3.5 years I have concerns about their finish durability. The hardware, components and build quality are good just the finish has been a concern for areas primarily by sinks. Tri star did all of our cabinets. Bathrooms and Kitchens, so a lot of money spent on cabinets. Within 6 months - 1 year cabinets by sinks started to show finish peeling in areas near corners and endgrain. I called tristar and they came out to look at them, which took a while (about 1 year after my first call). When they looked at the cabinets, they noticed some marks on the underside of the cabinet door and said it is not due to the finish but due to water damage. I was shocked as these are bathroom and kitchen cabinets by sinks and they will naturally get drops on them here and there. We don't flood our cabinets with water, any water getting on them is from normal day to day use and wiped off as much as possible. I was told I would have to pay to have them refinished, so advised just to touch them up with some pens/art pencils. To say I was disappointed with this would be an understatement with the amount of money we spent. I my prior homes I have not experienced these issues with durability. It does make me question if there is an advantage to getting factory finished vs custom finished cabinets, but I really do not know. My recommendation would be to do a lot of research on whichever cabinet company you choose and look for reviews about durability of their cabinets.I did seek opinion from different wood working forums and out of state cabinet makers, and based on their advice it appears 1 top coat is not sufficient for durability in these areas. UPDATE 9/1/16: After sending a letter to tri star earlier this year, the cabinets were fixed. They informed me they applied an additional top coat. It is hard to know if this will last. Standard poly has been recommended to have 3-5 coats in sink areas however the Sherwin Williams (Water White LF Conversion Varnish) product tri-star uses is supposed to be more durable than a standard varnish. I am increasing this review to 3 stars as they have fixed the issue. I hope the finish is durable now and will look to provide an update after a year has passed. UPDATE 3/3/17: Approx 6 months since being refinished and the finish is like cracking in certain areas, not even on the edge where it was inferred it was due to water damage previously.Overall really disappointed and doubt I would use them for cabinet work in the future because of finish durability concerns. The build quality and construction seem good otherwise, just the finish is not what I would expect at all for durability given what we paid and what we have seen in durability with prior cabinets we owned. read more

One by one my cabinet drawers are breaking. They would come off track and hang down. The plastic rear mounted brackets are all cracking in half. The way that Tri-Star installed the brackets was that they shot staples down the middle of the bracket to secure it to the back of the cabinet. On the brackets, there are holes for screws to secure the brackets to the back of the cabinet. Because Tri-star put the staples where they shouldn't be, this caused them the split right down the middle, making the drawers not open or close. Not one of my drawers were installed correctly using the bracket holes and screws. They are all stapled down the center and are all slowly breaking with time. We have been able to glue the brackets back together but those are also breaking. When I contacted Tri-Star, they had no interest in seeing photos of their shoddy workmanship, nor did they offer replacement brackets. What they did offer me was a price plus the cost of shipping for new brackets, or if I would like to pick the brackets up at their facility. Very poor customer service. read more

I also want to thank Rick Hulbert for his expertise in helping me put together a much better designed kitchen that allowed me more counter space as well as additional cabinets. Good experience with designing the cabinets with our assigned designer, however we have had issues with cabinets within the 1 year of warranty with the finish and tri-star would not fix it. It might be they know their process for finishing is not the best, so even if they fix it it will happen again and don't want to deal with it. Who knows, but I do know I have not had these issues with my prior cabinets. read more

I am having the same issues as Chris W., right down to the suggestion to "color in" my chipped and peeling stain with an art pencil. Spent over $13k and I regret it choosing them to create my kitchen cabinets. Joe was great to work with in designing the kitchen, my installer said they are the easiest custom cabinets he's worked with; however a year post-install I began having issues with pops, chipping, and peeling stain - resulting in bare wood on the raised panel doors. The stain on some of the outside corners of my upper cabinets is gone as well - which can't possibly be water damage or wear and tear. I've had them out twice, been told it's all "water damage" - even on the cabinets opposite the sink - and the only alternative I was given was to pay again to have my doors redone - at $800 a pop. I loved how they looked, and now every time I'm in my kitchen I just feel ripped off. There are better business folks out there - keep shopping until you find one of them. read more

The quality of the work has greatly diminished over the years. I have had custom cabinets made by Tri-star 4 times over the last 15 years and have always been happy until now. Sadly, the quality of the custom hand finished cabinets did not match the showroom. The lines I had to "look closely" to see in the showroom were extremely visible on my cabinets. The cabinets are sloppy and look as if a child painted them. I attempted to resolve with Tri-Star, but they said that handmade finishes all look different and referred to the disclaimer I had signed. Beware of signing that disclaimer which states that they are not responsible for rag marks, blotches or noticeable variations. This allows them to do low quality work and have no responsibility for the quality of the work. Definitely not the same company I have done business with over the years. Previously they cared. Now they clearly do not value customers. Once an order is delivered, they are done. Never again. read more

Have been so wonderful to work with to get a custom made piece. Very good at communicating and very responsive. Good at phone calls and emails, even sent a receipt. Order was done promptly in less time than expected. I know they have quality products because my parents also have the same custom project. Had custom cabinet built for my bathroom with in two years finish started coming off they said it was water damage and that i could replace at a cost. Said they only have a ONE year warrenty on their customwork ***really I guess they have no faith in their product**Had someone else look at the door and they said it was in the finishing of the cabinet. when I asked the guy to show me how they water was getting on the cabinet he said he couldn't .....poor customer service...I would NEVER buy anything from them again! read more

Didn't have any initial problem. Not much guidance in choosing cabinet design, but we didn't know what to expect. We ordered our cabinets, including a large island for the kitchen. I wondered how the plumbing wall would be hidden, but since the designer never mentioned anything, figured, they knew what they were doing and it would be ok. Well we got the cabinets and the island looked very small, when I called to ask what was going on, i was told that the designer accounted for a drywall back to the island. Are you kidding?!?! In a high end kitchen, they just assumed that we would have the majority of the island be drywall?? So when I called to figure it out, the appropriate backing was ordered, but not without charging us an additional delivery fee for the correct island components. Then, when they called to come get a price to make sure it color matched, the sales guy had the manager o speaker, and he was heard disparaging our home. I think the quality may be adequate, but the service sucks. I would definitely not choose Tri-Star again. Update. The new island piece was too small because the designer just guessed on the dimensions!! Rather than confirming before building the piece, he figured it was quicker and easier to roll the dice on our cabinet. When we informed him of his error, all he said was that he assumed the wall was a certain dimension. No apology, no other explanation. Nothing! Didn't make any suggestions on how to rectify the problem. Basically said too bad. It's your problem. John is awful to work with! read more

Tri-Star custom built and intalled our kitchen and bath cabinets in 1999. We chose high grade doors but opted for cherry stained birch instead of cherry wood because it was a more affordable option for our large kitchen. We also opted for a timeless door style (retangle/no arches) and did not add any wood embellishments or appliques that were popular at the time. We do a lot of entertaining, have children and pets, and our cabinets still look brand new. I still love the look of cabinets because they are timeless even though white is all the rage.
