My family has been going to Dr. John for years. He is so funny and takes care of his patients so well! His whole staff is incredibly welcoming, including his son Dr. James. I'm a new patient. I've been to his office a few times. First time was a cleaning. I was impressed when he called back a patient that didn't have an appointment but was having an issue. My thought was human to human feeling office. My cleaning was done by the dentist and not hygienist. Great personal connection and time to chat about upcoming issue. Next visit, I was the patient that was allowed in without an appointment because I was in pain. Feeling like a human. Thank you Dr John Iju! But my most recent visit is the reason I am writing this review. I needed a tooth extraction. I have great anxiety with dental appointments. He not only made me relax but he gave me shots that didn't hurt. That's right...up front work should have caused me great pain but I barely felt the first shot. I selected this dentist because he graduated from UOP and many years I had a dentist that didn't hurt me with shots. He told me that it would not hurt and it didn't. It pains me to give a 2 star review because Doctor John is so cool and we've been a patient of his for 6 years. He is great but his billing department is horrible. We changed insurance and provided our new insurance information and they said they accepted the new insurance. After we received care, we received a call saying they don't accept it and we needed to pay out of pocket. They sent me a $400 bill because they didn't confirm our insurance worked but said it did (we kept the same carrier so I'm assuming they just assumed it was the same insurance plan). It's unfortunate that we will have to go to another dentist now because I was planning on getting a lot work done and even was getting a quote for Invisalign but now I don't trust that I will be billed correctly and might be stuck with a huge bill. read more

I have gone to Dr John for years and love him and his staff .. my husband has been suffering with a toothache for a couple months, dealing with a different dentist in Livermore , he is terrified of dentist but agreed to go see Dr John ... he had to see Dr James .. happy to say he is as pleasant,patient and gentle has his dad .. I've been going to Dr. John for approximately forever, I started going here as a kid and I keep putting off getting a new dentist even though I live in socal now and can only sneak in visits when I visit my parents. I've been trying to get a dentist who isn't 300 miles away, but given all the horror stories you hear I just can't force myself to switch. That said, I had an unfortunate accident and broke some teeth as a kid. He gave me a temporary fix (that mind you lasted like 10 years with some occasional revisions) while I had braces, and when I was done with them and it finally gave out, I ended up with veneers that have shown no signs of issues for the last 5 years. Dr John actively avoids doing work if it isn't necessary, and everyone from my late grandmother to both my parents have had almost nothing done. If Dr. John says you need something, you can trust that you really do need it. If you're reasonably close to this office, or have reason to drop by San Ramon occasionally, consider going. read more

My entire family trusts and loves Dr. John. We have for nearly twenty years. I have been to other dentists in my area for mere convenience and have repeatedly been pressured to have work done that I truly didn't need. Dr. John has respect for his patients and their money. Dr. John has been my dentist for years now, along with other members of my family. He is incredibly nice and understanding about your teeth. He doesn't ever pressure you into high cost procedures that you don't need. I even drive all the way from San Francisco to the Tri-Valley Dental office in San Ramon for my appointments. I have to go in every six months for a cleaning otherwise I know I'll get a cavity thanks to my soft teeth, so it's a relief that I don't have to be stressed out over the visit. read more

Dr. John is an awesome dentist. Take it from a chicken who was pretty darn nervous going into a long overdue dental exam and subsequent proceedures. His staff are courteous and non-judgemental for those with less than perfect teeth or those who haven't been in a dentist's chair in a while. Dr. John and his staff always ask you what your comfort level is throughout every proceedure. I never experienced any pain or discomfort in my filling proceedures. He and his staff have put me completely at ease about returning to a regularly-scheduled dental visit regimen. WIth regards to costs and options, Dr. John makes an effort to explain every option available along with pros and cons for each option. Let me first say, because I used to get so worked up about going to the dentist, I've actually had a dentist ask me if I had an anxiety disorder... When I moved from California to Arizona about 10 years ago, I felt I needed to find a local dentist. Let's just say, I was so unhappy with my experiences there, I now fly to California to see Dr. John whenever I need dental work. He is friendly, hilarious, honest and fair. Due to opening a new business, and taking care of my customers better than I took care of myself, I was unable to make a trip to California for almost 2 years. I was terrified that I would need MAJOR work (I could feel little holes in quite a few of my teeth). He assured me that my teeth are just fine, and I only needed very minor work. A cleaning, a filling replacement and 2 precautionary fillings later, my teeth are in such great shape, people have to wear sunglasses to look at them! Dr. John doesn't seem to like using the drill unless absolutely necessary. This works well for me because I have nightmares about the dental drill from when I was a little girl. He's able to sandblast little cavities. That's completely painless, and I'm pretty sure is the same method to remove braces glue from teeth. Since he had to replace a filling, and using the drill was necessary, he gave me nitrous oxide! Where was this stuff when I was little?!!! They also used a water pick to clean my teeth. If you haven't had this done before, it's a MUST to experience! My friends don't understand why I get so happy about dentist appointments. But when you have a dentist as great as Dr. John (and his staff), there's no reason to be anxious. read more

Oh my goodness, he pulled a tooth from my 87 yr old father and my dad told me I need to switch dentist. Well on a Fri nite i had excruciating tooth pain that i was previously told needed to be pulled...trying to find a dentist on a Sat was impossible to pull a tooth and was RX'd antibiotics and said wait till next week for pulling... Dr "John" office got me in on the Mon. And said he could help!!!! Not only did he get me outta pain but did a root canal AND saved my tooth and will be able to give it a new crown!!!! I have to drive over an hour away to see him but for sure it is worth every mile!!! Been going here for 34 years. Dr. John is honest and kind. They do great work. I was living in southern ca in my late 20s/early 30s, went to a dentist who said I had 6 cavities. I found that odd because I have never had cavities. Went to Dr John to let him know what they said. He confirmed I did NOT have cavities. My entire family goes here and I have gone here since my first dentist visit. Not one cavity, which I partly give acknowledgment to their preventative dental care. Also I have to say I had my wisdom teeth pulled by Dr. Toy and he gave me four numbing injections. I barely felt them. He asked literally two minutes later, "Did you feel that?" To which I replied, "No". To my amazement he said, "well first one is out." He finished all four in about thirty minutes and I was in and out in about an hour. I will always trust this place. I live in Concord now and after hearing all the horror stories elsewhere decided to keep making the trip here. I'm not going to go anywhere else ever. read more

I moved here from Monterey and had no idea whom to go to. As such I did nothing until I had an excruciatingly painful tooth that needed immediate remedy. It was a Saturday and I was seriously entertaining the emergency room or shooting myself. Jokingly of course but nevertheless I was in in dire need. I searched for a dentist opened on Saturday and found one on Bollinger Canyon road. I thought i was going to be treated but was only given a brief examination, x-rays, and 5 vicodan to hold me over till Tuesday, as if. The estimate was exorbitantly cost prohibitive, and for a bunch of crowns and hack work that didn't sound right. While walking my dog on the following Sunday, I mentioned my situation to one of my dog walking acquaintances and she said I should look up her dentist whom shes been going to for over 20 yrs. I did, and he is Dr John. As such, I am so grateful and haven't looked back. I told him my story and he diligently took an examination while indicating that some dentist play on a different court of rules and that it appeared that I found one that was unscrupulous. His estimate was far more reasonable and not nearly as profound in needed work. He is professional, really good, great bedside manner and, in my experience, the best dentist I've ever had the pleasure being introduced to as a patient. Coming from a person who did not like going to a dentist, this dentist, Dr. John Ichiuji and his fabulous staff, are the best. One feels like you are going to a social event when you go there. Everyone is so nice. The dentist I went to Dr. John, put me at ease since it was my first root canal, and a big one at that. My regular dentist did not do root canals so a neighbor who works there referred me to Tri Valley Dental. Also I was never in pain throughout my appointments. My little family have been going here for about 10 years off and on. We have experienced a lot of different dental offices in the 17 years in the tri valley area. With one, couldn't even get in for a dental visit in over a year. Another they spoke about unnecessarly removing a patients tooth. The most recent was one that wanted to bill me $760 beyond what they quoted and even wanted to bill for xrays they didn't take. I must say that I just love the staff and hygienist who take care of me and my family. The billing is always correct, I check these things. Willing to fit me in if something opens up. I rarely give out 5s, but this is warranted in my mind. I went to see them because I did a really good job of chipping a molar. I'm a scaredy cat as others have mentioned on reviews and I typically stay away from the dentists due to bad experiences in the past. Well, Dr. John goes out of his way to make his patients feel at ease. The fear and trauma I bring to the chair is a way to let him know that I've had bad experiences with dentists before. He was very astute in calling out that as dentists, they pretty much have all the power and there are just dentists out there who will use that to their advantage. Dr. John also goes through and explains what he will do and why it is necessary. Bedside manner is the phrase people use for doctors and I think it applies equally if not more here with how Dr. John treats his patients. He's been doing this 39 years when I first walked in the door 12/15. If you're like me, ask for gas! All his staff have been with him for a long time. The dental assistant who helped during my crown process has been with him 10 years and that's considered a short time in his office. I also don't get the sense of being oversold or sold to. He emphasizes loving what he does in helping people and a commitment to quality. These are fleeting qualities in today's world. He's definitely helped me regain the confidence to go back to the dentist because of the trust he has built already. read more

I have been coming here for over 20 yrs or more. I am now without dental insurance and can not seem to find an insurance company that will cover me here! I love my hygenists! They are wonderful and the staff is very friendly! I see Dr; Toi and he seems very conservative in recommending dental work, which makes me feel like he is trying to help me reduce costs. He is very patient with my 'unique' fear and has adjusted by giving me extra novacaine when doing dental work, since I seem to be on the immune side of the novacaine. I would highly recommend them!
