I had two piercings done here and they both were fast and cheap. I had my tragus and my conch done here about a year apart. They had a deal that was like $20 for easy piercings and it was a deal. The place is clean and the people are relatively friendly (although if i had to deal with 10 freshman coming in everyday to get their noses pierced at the same time while screaming and jumping around I'd be a little on edge too). I've gotten six piercings from Chris at Tribal Rites and couldn't be happier! The piercing room is as clean and sterile as a dentist's or doctor's office, but much better-decorated. The staff and artists are incredibly professional and take their work very seriously. It's a great place to go if you're nervous; they're so quick, it'll be over before you know it and you'll have a beautiful, well-done piercing that will heal perfectly if you take care of it! Piercings here are very affordable, especially considering the quality of the jewelry and piercing. This is an awesome shop for Boulder. Can't remember the main dudes name, but he's super legit. Quac (spelling?) is his apprentice. I went in to have them check my old ear holes for possible new jewelry. After an exploratory session, I was back. This time for 10g gorilla glass. The people in this shop are so chill, easy going and comfortable. After picking out my 10g clear gorilla glass plugs, it was back to the chair. The surgical approach lets you know they know what they're doing. Quac marked my ears, made an adjustment, clamped me, punch my holes and before I knew it, I was done. My friend and I came here for tattoos while we were visiting Boulder. All the way from the initial phone call to when we left their customers service was great and friendly. It was both of our first times getting rib tattoos and some places around the area weren't willing to do them either. Out artist Matt was incredible. He was friendly and made conversation that made us not think about the tattoo. Had a light hand so both of us were very comfortable the whole time. One star only because of one specific artist. First off, he does not give estimates for the price upon consultation, which completely blindsides the customer when having the tattoo done and then paying. I have never consulted with an artist without getting a price estimate, ever. I prefer to get my tattoos done by shops that aren't a chain, but I was in the area and figured I would give it a try. Let's just say it's a chain with inexpensive prices for a reason. My tattoo healed very roughly, despite the fact I treated it like I have all of my previous tattoos from shops in Denver. It's been 3 weeks and it is still scabbing and ink has been pulled from all over, something I'm going to have to correct myself. Secondly, I'm trying to learn stick and poke pieces because I appreciate the art of perfecting a non-mechanical way of tattooing. I have many I've done on myself, and out of 5, only 2 have not gone as planned and I was willing to spend the money necessary for a cover up, something that could have easily made the artist $120+. He had covered up my previous trail & error so I decided to reach out to him again. Instead of working with me (or even politely declining, which I would obviously respect as it is the artist's choice), he was very demeaning and downright rude. Sure has a lot of ego for being an artist at a chain tattoo shop, and for how much I was willing to pay, certainly not great customer service. I hate to downgrade someone that takes pride in their work, confidence is what makes a great artist, but this was far too rude to a paying customer willing to come back. read more

Over the past two weeks I have been trying to get in contact with the good ole' people at Tribal Rites on the hill. I called once a day for a week just to inquire about getting a tattoo, whether or not I had to make an appointment, prices, etc. No answer; just a voice mail. I made sure I was calling within their normal business hours. The next week, when I found time, I decided to drop in and ask in person. The man at the counter directed me to the tattoo artist Amanda. I printed out a picture of a tattoo that I was very set on and gave her the $20 to hold my appointment for the next day. The next day, I walk in and am greeted by Amanda. She sits me down and shows me the image she sketched based on the picture I gave her. It was less than satisfactory, but she explained that Tattooists can't copy the work of another artist. That's fine; I totally get it. So she has me wait while she goes and tries to sketch something else. While my friend and I waited, the woman who was working the counter asked Amanda if she wanted her to start me on the the paperwork, and Amanda waved her away. After she finished a new sketch, I still didn't quite like it. It was too manic and uniform. She then walked over to another artist and asked, "Do you know anyone that will copy this?" coming off as very passive aggressive. After I expressed my dissatisfaction, she seemed very dismissive, and unwilling to work with me. I just gave her feed back on the second drawing, noting that it was just didn't capture the style of what I wanted: something simple and not too over the top. She then tells me that I should try a different place. So my friend and I left. This review isn't aimed directly at Amanda's artistic view, but more so towards her short temper and passive aggressive attitude towards me as a client. The only reason I giving them two stars, and not one, is because I have been to this location before to get my ears pierced, and the experience was much better than the one I had today. I understand that there is some Tattooist Bible Code, or whatever, and I appreciate it for what it is. I would feel bad if I copied someone else's work and called it my own. Plagiarism is not cool. But at the same time, It comes down to me as a customer getting what I what in return for my money. read more

I have never cried after coming out of a tattoo parlor like this. The people working were so so mean. I asked if I could do a small hoop for a septum piercing and they said no which is fine, but then they proceeded to literally yell at me for asking more questions about it. Then as I walked out they laughed at me. The people working today should be fired. So awful. They need to learn to treat customers with RESPECT!! Lost a customer today. I got my nose pierced here and while the piercing process was okay, my piercing was not positioned correctly. I made it clear that I wanted a hoop, they said they would start with that but I could always put one in after 4 months. I waited and turns out, my piercing is in a place where no hoop will fit it. They also say to clean it all the time, but every other piercer says not to even mess with the piercing. Once I stopped cleaning it with their $10 overpriced solution, it healed much faster. I've been here a couple times because they do good work. But it's gotten increasingly creepier. I went in to get a tattoo done on my ribs and they refused to give me nipple covers so I was stuck there holding a t shirt over my boobs the whole time. The guy doing my tattoo was standoffish and kept telling me that I needed to just be comfortable with him. Another time I went in to get a nipple piercing replacement and even though they had been pierced for years I was told that they had to insert them. Once I got into the private room I was informed that they didn't have the correct ball size and since I already paid for it I would just have to deal with the mismatched piercings. Lastly I went in to ask if they knew where to find ink (I had an apprentice friend who ran out of ink) and the guy straight up yelled at me for getting at home tattoos. This place used to be awesome and friendly but now it's a negative and borderline pervy environment. read more

Most places that offer a $20 deal are to be avoided, so I was understandably leery of Tribal Rites when I first went about 6 years ago. Needless to say, I'm still a huge fan today. I have gotten no less than 15 piercings here (let's just say I went through a pretty hardcore piercing phase) and a couple of tattoos. I have worked with almost all of the artists here and continue to be impressed with their quality work, professionalism, and friendliness. Finally, somewhere clean, professional, and super affordable in Boulder. And on The Hill *gasp*! The prices for the jewelry alone are going to be similar to an upscale piercing parlor. That is to be expected though; who wants to buy cheap quality jewelry from a piercing shop? It was also cool to read the article about them in the Colorado Daily a few weeks ago (there was an article about how members of city council want to take [what they think are] "tasteless" businesses off The Hill [ex. dispensaries, tattoo parlors, eateries catering to stoners, etc]). The truth is, businesses like Tribal Rites need to be on The Hill, not only because they target the local demographic, but because they are an honest business that has a positive effect on the neighborhood. I originally only came in here to get a new navel ring (my original one broke). But after experiencing the courteous service, the calm environment, the quality of the piercings, and learning how affordable it is, I know I'll be back in there to get more done. Everyone here is completely awesome, helpful n down right legit, prices are great! If your looking for tatts, piercings or body jewelry this is your place! I'm upgrading my rating to 4 stars from one star based on a few emails back and forth between Mike, the owner at Tribal Rites and me. His emails were extremely customer service oriented, he apologized for the way we were treated and he assured me that our experience was not in line with his or Tribal Rites' feelings on customer service. Mike truly seems to care and employees do have bad days and mistakes do happen; what you do to remedy the situation is sometimes even more telling than if the problem hadn't occurred. My original review is below but consider this revision when deciding to do business with this place or not. And if you do have an issue, I'd simply ask to speak to Mike. I'd be surprised if he couldn't make it right for you. Additionally, Mike pointed out to me that he has two other shops, in Longmont and Westminster, and that both of those are better setup for families whereas this shop (which is admittedly closer to my house) caters more towards students. Original review: ...the staff was rude. I felt extremely unwelcome and after trying to find something positive about the place, finally just have up and left. My 16 year old daughter was in to get a simple piercing and I brought her younger sister who wanted to provide moral support. The rude staffer insisted she couldn't even sit on the couch which was sectioned off from the rest of the shop and when I asked what I should do with her, he suggested I leave a 7 year old girl outside by herself. read more

I live in Denver but I've traveled to Boulder for my last two piercings (tragus and septum) simply because I love the customer service here. Every employee I've come into contact with has been so personable and helpful, and both of the gentlemen that pierced me (I wish I could remember their names!) made me feel totally at ease about the entire process. Despite the fact that it's out of the way I'll gladly make the trip down to Boulder for any future piercings because they managed to build a really positive relationship with me in the brief window between walking in the door and having a needle in my body. Coming from a town in utah with extremely expensive and nice piercing shops, I was skeptical about Tribal Rites. My biases of getting sketchy piercings in a college town were completely wrong as soon as I walked in the door. It was nice inside..not the fanciest.. The piercing room was sterile, and the piercer was SUPER nice. I got my septum done, and everyone at home talked about how bad theirs hurt and how they almost passed out or whatever, mine didn't hurt at all. He hit the sweet spot for sure. After visiting Tribal Rights multiple times I have had the opportunity to observe their pros and cons. I was very pleased with my piercing and the man (who's name I do not remember) did an amazing job and my piercing has healed wonderfully. Unfortunately the customer service has yet to impress me. In my many times visiting Tribal Rights, every interaction felt rushed and un-genuine. One time I went in and though it was busy, the woman at the counter helped three people who came in after me when I was continuously reminding her all I needed was a small tragus ring. I felt disrespected and ignored after waiting for 30 minutes I had to leave. They have a great business going and have skilled people who love what they do but its all about business for them. Just had my second tattoo done, this time by Nathan. It goes without saying that the tattoo is perfect, because he and all of the artists are extremely talented. Nathan took the time and effort to make sure the details were solid. Everyone is friendly and knowledgeable, the place is super clean and organized, and it looks great after the remodel.
