What comes to mind when you hear "Trinity River"? If you think of the Trinity near Downtown Dallas, you probably think of a dirty, polluted river. But put your assumptions behind you and head north to the Elm Fork of the Trinity in Coppell! While you won't find a pristine river, you will find am urban retreat that most D/FW residents aren't even aware of. Your adventure starts at the Carrollton dam where the Trinity crosses under Sandy Lake Road. You can reserve your single or tandem kayak online but a reservation aren't required. You save a few bucks on two people if you go with a tandem kayak. Personally, I preferred the independence of the solo kayak. I'm a tad competitive. The route takes a minimum of 2-3 hours and it's a distance of about 5 miles. You're heading downstream in a very calm current so paddling is required somewhat but there's lots of opportunity to just go with the river's flow. The staff will fit you with a life jacket and give you full directions for your pickup at the end of the path. At the end, they will load everything back up for the drive back to where you started and to recover your things. We came in a large group and we all had a really good time. The river is fairly murky but you won't be drinking the water so don't sweat it. Be prepared for a tiny bit of nature like cranes, small garden snakes, and turtles. If anything, it's an excellent workout and a great group activity.

    Good FB material.

It was a random Friday my parter and I had off. We went and grabbed breakfast and decided we wanted to do something new and different. I googled stuff to do, and these kayaks came up. Did a bit if research and since Trinity was the closest and decently priced, we decided to give it a go. We got there told them what we wanted, after hearing what the gentleman had to say, we paid and signed their waivers. We got two single kayaks and bottles of water, for about $80. We then got in the kayaks, didn't event set foot in the river. After that, we took off. We relaxed in the shady parts of the river and paddled to try to beat each other to logs or splits in the river. It was quite fun. We saw cranes, robins, fireflies, turtles, and some fish. The atmosphere was very beautiful, considering our location in North Texas. We took a bunch of pictures and video with our phone. We had LTE access the whole time which allowed me to take, edit, and upload pictures on to Facebook while I was in the river. We checked in on FB too. It's a pretty good opportunity to post something cool and different on social media. My butt did get tired, after all it's a 2-3 hour ride while you sit, but that didn't really bother me. The paddling is not as hard as it seems, I was only a bit sore after our trip. Once we got to the end, we took the kayaks up a short way, maybe 3 minutes up a tiny incline and called the guy to pick us up. It took maybe 7-9 minutes before he arrived. Overall, it was a great experience and provided for a new and different activity on a random boring day.

Living in the suburbs and think the only way you can get to nature is to go to the local park? You are wrong. Trinity River Kayak Co to the rescue. They offer Kayak and Canoe trips down the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. Rental prices are well worth the adventure you have ahead of you and provides several options including: single person kayak, tandem kayak and canoe. If you already have a kayak or a canoe, you can still utilize their shuttle service. Shuttle service takes you to the launch points if you don't launch from their property and pick you up when you are finished. Their convenience store has all the essentials you need (drinks, snacks, sunscreen, bug spray, etc.) if you forget anything or want if you did not feel like packing anything. I have only been a few times but intend to make kayaking trips via TRKC recurring on my calendar. Favorite trip to date is The Blast which I did a few weeks ago. I saw a lot of great nature along the way including: turtles, ducks, cranes, coyotes, a bear (just kidding) and a bird that I swear was waiting for me to keel over so it could eat me (see in the pictures). Average trip down the river for me is 2 hours. It's a great way to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and get back to nature without having to leave town. Now get out there and start enjoying nature! See you on the river.

First time kayaker here and it was a Blast out on the water today! I read through the reviews this morning, booked the 1p slot and was on the water by 1:15 after shuttling to the push off spot. It took me about 2 hrs 46 mins to finish. The life vests were secure and comfy and I felt safe and had some leg space in the kayak. I got great instructions from Jeff and good info from the shuttle drivers. The young lady in the office was nice and helpful. Kayaking was relaxing and fun. Thanks Trinity River Kayak!!! I'll be back

Andy Brown is a beautiful space, from the pond to the open fields, the sidewalk/bike path, multiple large pavilions, and fun playground. There are large, mature trees surrounding the park. We parked in the wrong lot and had to walk alongside the gym in order to get to the playground and I couldn't believe how beautiful the pathways were with all the trees and the small creek running alongside. Not what I expected from a city park! The playground itself ("Kid Country") is almost fully enclosed and is a sprawling assortment of things to climb up, swing on, and slide down. There is a play area in the toddler section with storefronts to spark pretend play. The ground is bark. There are large trees in the center of the play area that provide shade and make the play structure look more natural than your typical playground. Almost like a tree house. There are benches scattered throughout the play area and a large covered pavilion with multiple picnic tables underneath. The city of Coppell provides free WiFi there and there were multiple moms with laptops out, working, while their kids played. The only big negative is the distance from the playground to the bathroom. I understand that they probably built the bathrooms more toward the center of the park, but the wise choice would have been to also put an additional small restroom right next to the playground. It's too far of a walk for me to feel comfortable sending my younger kids over there alone and it's kind of a bummer to have to wrangle together the entire group every time one kid has to pee. Otherwise, a fabulous park. LOVE IT. Hats off to you, Coppell!

Setting up my outing was very easy. Ben was very responsive and even though I was setting things up close to my trip he was able to accommodate me. There was some nasty weather forecast so since I had the whole weekend available we decided to play it by ear and make the call to fish the day before. We fished Joe Pool Lake and left the boat dock at sunrise, it was a chilly 33 degrees that morning! We hit some of Ben's favorite spots and it wasnt long before I got the first fish in the boat. I didnt catch any huge fish that day, but I did catch numbers. Long story short we were laughing so much and having such a great time I decided to extend my half-day charter to a full day (thank you Ben for accommodating!) We fished well past sunset as Ben was determined to get me a big bass... alas it wasnt meant to be. Ben has a clean bass-boat in great condition, well organized tackle and higher-end rods and reels. He was very gracious in getting me re-rigged, and unsnagging me while handing me a new rod to use in the meantime. He was able to accommodate my rod/reel preferences as well (spinning, bait-casting, etc.) We fished exclusively artificial lures my trip and he was open me to bringing my own gear also. I am planning on taking my teenage son down to fish some Texas bass and will definitely be seeing Ben's guide services when I do. Thanks Ben!

There are three section-small dog, large dog & water. Be aware though-the small dog area gets a little swampy too when it rains a lot. All three sections are quite large and grassy (not muddy). McInnish Park doesn't come up right away in searches when you're looking for dog parks so that's why it's a hidden gem. They have a good amount of parking and the standard separate sections for big and small dogs. But wait for.....there's a THIRD section.....ohhhh....ahhhhh.....ohhhhh! The third section is welcome to all pups and features a pond/lake/watering hole for your dogs to swim and play in! I have a six month old pup and while he's been in the water before, really had no idea that he would jump right in. Wrong I was. He could not get enough of the water and sadly I had to pay for it later while attempting to clean him off. The space is nice and heavily shaded so perfect for day time. You have your standard crazy dog people who like to camp out in the small dog section with camping chairs, coolers and cliques so be aware of that. Personally, I would rather socialize with the four legged friends.

You could take the trails far enough north that you head to West Plano, I think. And they keep expanding south as well. I really have to credit Carrollton with doing a great job with these trails over the years. (We lived in Carrollton for 9 years and I miss being walking distance to the greenbelt.)
