Great unpretentious spot with live music/entertainment almost every night and no cover charge. There's ample bar seats in addition to tables, an area to dance in front and a pool table in back. Selections are beer and wine only. I've been coming here over the years and they used to have a top notch beer selection. They website says they have over 60 beers from around the world but I haven't found that to be the case (?). I'm a block away from Trip, but I would drive here if I lived somewhere else because the people are great, friendly, neighborhoody; the beer selection ample, the entertainment often great. Came here to see a few bands play on a Sunday night. I loved the cool design of the outside wall on Grant Avenue. The stage is pretty decently sized, enough for a 5 piece rock band. The sound was good, and they did have a sound technician. The mixer was up close to the stage and the stage is near the entrance. If you are a musician, it's a good venue to play at. It's a decent sized venue with a big bar and ample seating area. I didn't order any food but was seated at the bar and although they don't have mixed drinks, they have a lot of beer, wine, and seltzers (thankfully because I am allergic to beer). The bartender was really nice and service was fast. It's a casual dress atmosphere and it seems like a nice venue! I hope to see more bands here! Giving this place 4 stars because they didn't have any mixed drinks and being allergic to beer it's important to have other options. read more

Upon entrance into Tr!p, a band performed a cover of HALL AND OATS "I Can't Go For That(No One Can Do)". I enjoyed their rendition of the song. The evening's highlight was the 10:30PM music showcase. Came to support a local artist + friend. The band rocked the house!!! For the life of me, I cannot recall my beer/hard cider's name. I was informed by a local that this neighborhood bar specifically serves only wine + beer "You won't find hard liquor here" said the bar patron. Can't believe I've never been to this great local pub, music venue, sports bar as it's the real deal. Small and sorta divey (without being dirty or scary) just South of Pico on Lincoln with plenty of street parking. Saw a great local bluegrass band "The Rattlesnakes" on a Sunday night with no cover charge and lots of good beer selections. (They have food too -- but next time). Sound was clear and crisp without being too loud. They also have Trivia Fridays and other special nights. It's also an unofficial Chicago Bears Bar -- so I'm betting the games here are insane if you like "Da Bears" Now, you don't have to go to Hollywood or Culver City if you want to hear some good local music at a fair price with no attitude. You have to experience it for yourself! It's definitely a divey spot, simple and not attempting to impress anyone. There are entertainment shows which can make for a potentially interesting night. On Wednesdays, they do have burlesque shows. Again, nothing fancy but can be fun if you're into that type of thing. I suggest bringing great attitude and mood, and leaving expectations outside the door. You may very much have a great time! read more

We attended a show last night (Sunday.) The band was Kikimora and the acoustics were fantastic. The crowd was a pleasant blend of youthful and older faces. They were respectful of the ambiance this night in regard to the Jazz stylings of the bands playing. The bar tenders were respectful and attentive. I found few exceptions to a completely enjoyable experience; some guys in the back of the bar playing beer pong as if they were watching the playoffs or something and no body from the establishment returned my submitted email inquiry or to answer the phone. My friend Bret H. is a talented musician, and once in a while, he gets together with musician friends to play a gig somewhere around L.A. One of these acts is called Horsepocalypse, and I've been to all (two) of their shows, the second of which was at TRiP in Santa Monica. I'd never been to TRiP before, as it's a neighborhood bar in a neighborhood quite far from my own. But it was a cool place, with a nice set-up for a show. There was a small stage and plenty of room to sit and watch. The acoustics were good, as these things go. Horsepocalypse jammed righteously, doing part of their act wearing rubber horse masks. At one point Bret was banging his horse head while he shredded a keytar. The bar was otherwise just casual and easy, with a bit of a sports bar vibe. There were several TVs, one of which seemed permanently fixed with an ad for TRiP's Taco Tuesday. It was easy to get a drink. The bartender was quick and friendly, and there was a robust selection of beers on tap. I had a Bootlegger's Rocco Red Ale and a Ritual Hop-O-Matic and enjoyed both. I enjoyed my night at TRiP and would likely go back if I lived in Santa Monica. Maybe I'll go back anyway, if Horsepocalypse rides again. read more

What a trip! It was great to be tripping! I took a trip to trip and so on. This place is kind of unexpected. It's smack dab on a part of Lincoln you'd probably be more likely to go if you're trying to score some coke rather than some tasty belgian beer. It looks kind of shady, in that "I could probably buy coke here" kind of way. But walk inside and it's...well, a dive bar. Like other people said, it's a huge mixed crowd, I had a nice conversation with a guy pushing 50 who said his name was Pete and sounded like a SoCal stereotype and then hit on a girl in rollerskates and a sparkle bra. It's that kind of place. But more unexpected is the beer selection. Most of the beers I've never seen before and the ones I have are on draft. For example: Fin du Monde is a real favorite beer of mine because I'm a hipster and I have to enjoy things that are both hard to find and European. I have never seen it on tap. And guess what Trip has on tap? Slightly less unexpected, but still pleasant is the sandwiches, which are pretty sizeable, cost around $7 and are a nice way to soak up all that liquid Belgium you got floating around in your belly. Equally unexpected are the bartenders, who are super nice, despite the fact that it seems like they only have one of them at any time. AND a free Burlesque show every Wednesday. I have never heard of any one playing here, but the one night I made it in, I had a good time and a good, personal interaction with the bands. Problem is, I've only made it in here one time... out of 3 times trying now. Yes, a Saturday night is a big night for bars and live entertainment. A cover charge of $30 is too much. Look how many people were actually in your bar, and you can figure this out for yourself. I will never understand turning a couple away, ready to spend money on drinks, when your bar that can hold 150 people, has 20 in it. Tonight, even worse. I didn't have my ID. I've been here before, look well into my mid 30s, but go ahead turn a couple away, ready to spend money on drinks, when your bar has 7 patrons in it, because your liquor license says so. This is a dive-tastic place to check out a local band on a weeknight. Everything was a pleasant surprise especially when compared to the exterior. What looks like a dirty, smokey grandpa bar from the facade belies an edgy interior. There's a good wine list but it's really all about the beers (fin du monde on tap!). Bottom line, this is the ideal place to check out your favorite local band and have a great drink for cheap. I came in on a Sunday, there was no cover charge and there was a band playing there. There was lots of interaction by those on the stage performing and the crowd be cause the place is pretty intimate. I really liked the vibe here. The place is decked out in a haphazard psychedelic style with lots of multicolored murals on the walls. They have a pretty good beer selection with some interesting beers on tap, like La Fin Du Monde and Allagash Curieux. The prices were reasonable and the staff was really friendly. They only serve beer and wine. I did not try the food, but it seemed limited to some finger foods like nachos, doesn't seem like they have a full kitchen. read more

I had no idea that this place even existed, until a friend wanted to check out the Wednesday night burlesque show for his bday. Its a small dive bar, with a long bar, a stage, a few tall bar tables with stools, one pool table, and one booth in the back. The painted walls were cool, very "TRiP"-py. There were two guys on stage playing some music, one on the bongo's. Not my type of music at all, but it was chill and laid back. Interesting assortment of drinks...I had the Excalibur Cider from England which was very yummy. Interesting crowd.....ranging from single drinkers at the bar, to a 40yr old couple about to make a baby against the wall, to your late 20's drinkers. Also, some stragglers straight off of Lincoln Blvd, and we all know what that means. We were told the burlesque show would start at 10, but I think it really started around 10:30pm. Keep in mind folks that this is a small dive bar in SM, so don't expect a professional show here. I appreciated the girls getting up and doing their thing, buuutt, something just seemed a little off. Cute little dive bar in Santa Monica! I've been a couple times to watch my boyfriend's boss play with his band. They have a small stage set up inside that can really crank out some noise!! We do have to pay a cover of $10 on those nights, but it's for a good cause. They have an impressive beer selection, both on draft and bottled. Ive never eaten there, but my boyfriend loves their chicken tacos. I'd say more than half the crowd watching the band had ordered food, so that's a good sign. They also have a pool table inside, which is great. If I lived closer, this would definitely be my neighborhood bar! read more
