I finally made it to The Misfit in Santa Monica, and honestly, the interior is giving major Balthazar-meets-Parisian-speakeasy energy. It's located in the old Clock Tower building, and the Art Deco decor is absolutely stunning--dark enough to hide a bad day but vibrant enough for a girls' night. The Vibe: It's loud, lively, and perfectly "bohemian chic". If you're coming on a weekend, prepare for a crowd, but it's the good kind of crowded where everyone looks like they just came from a gallery opening. The Food: I'm still thinking about the Crispy Chicken Sandwich--it was juicy, perfectly seasoned, and came with a fennel-apple slaw that actually felt fresh. We also shared the Bacon Wrapped Dates (obviously) and the Hand Cut Kennebec Fries, which arrive in a bowl so huge it could basically be its own zip code. The Drinks: Their Happy Hour is arguably the best in the city. I had the Japanese Dream with matcha, and it was expertly crafted--not too sweet, which is my biggest pet peeve. The "Misfit" Moment: The service can be a tiny bit slow when it's "rammed," and there's a 4% kitchen fee that feels a bit unnecessary, but they make up for it with those complimentary sea salt chocolate chip cookies at the end. Enjoyed my time here last night. I stopped by during happy hour after work to kill some time before my dinner reservations at Loulou. Found this bar on Yelp earlier. Some of the reviews were enticing so I just had to come check it out for myself. I suggest parking in the lot on the corner of 2nd and Santa Monica or the parking garage across from Elephante and Cava. Street parking is $1.50 for 15 mins. I paid $11.50 for about 4 hrs in the parking garage. And it was a short walk to the bar from there. Don't be afraid to get your steps in lol. There's one security professional outside posted in a suit and he was cool. The host was welcoming and friendly. Before I even stepped foot inside I could read the room and see this was definitely my type of vibe. Dark and dim lights with a vintage setting or theme. Wasn't noisy and gave this intimate feel. I grabbed a seat at the bar. The bartender was attentive acknowledging me then proceeding to pour me a tall glass of water. while looking over the bar menu I couldn't help but admire the bar set up and the reading books sitting very high on the shelf. Couldn't make up my mind on which drink so I asked him for his recommendations. Was in the mood for bourbon or whiskey so he suggested "The Thunderbird" which is their version of an "Old Fashioned". It was strong but it was good. Didn't mind taking my time with it. My second drink was the "Mezcal Yellow Jacket". Now I'm a tequila type of guy so this was my first time drinking Mezcal. As far as I know lol. And I'm no fan of spicy cocktails but this one indeed was exceptional. Think I may have found a new drink. Lastly, the food... Couldn't decide whether I wanted the smash burger, crispy chicken sandwich or the grilled cheese with tomato soup. Everything really sounded so good. And some of the pics didn't make it any better. He highly recommended the "Crispy Chicken Sandwich". Didn't take long to come out at all. I ordered then went to the restroom. Was gone for about 10 minutes and came back to my food just patiently waiting on me. Right on time !!! Not to mention, he also covered my drink for me while I was gone. The sandwich is or was better than I expected. Although I do prefer sweet coleslaw, this one was a lil tangy but I ate the whole sandwich. And it's a big chicken breast. The cucumbers were very different. I'm used to pickles. However, I wouldn't change anything. I would actually order that again. Ordered the brussel sprouts to go. They were delicious... Parking in the structure just north of the restaurant is no problem and we were seated very quickly. One member of our party is vegetarian and so there were several accessible menu options for them. We were bike riding on the boardwalk and rode in on a Wednesday to take advantage of the drink and food specials. Arrived around noon and fell in love with the decor! After enjoying some coffee nearby at Kavahana, my wife and I instantly knew this was our excuse to go to Santa Monica 3rd Street Promenade since it's been years either of us have gone. We walked around a bit but nothing caught our attention until we came across The Misfit and it was the perfect weekend brunch. The Misfit is located in downtown Santa Monica along Santa Monica Blvd near 2nd Street which is also walking distance from the Promenade. The restaurant itself is in the ground floor of the Clock Tower Building which explains the beautiful interior and bar. Since it was a sunny day out, we chose to sit in the front patio and ordered a pitcher of Sangria. As for food, my wife got shrimp tacos and I went with fish tacos. These were not your typical tacos, both were crispy and flavorful due to the Jicama and Blue Corn. The Misfit is centrally located a few blocks from the beach and also a few steps away from the promenade. Knowing they also do happy hour everyday until 7pm explains why they get so much foot traffic. Homemade pickles were a nice touch. 29 bucks each and no fries fyi. Caesar salad was nice but overdressed. Martini was perfect. Service - although attentive and professional, kinda got to ding them here. Pacing matters and they were way off. Salad came while I was still having a cocktail, then one of three entrees came while we were eating the salad, and it sat there getting cold for ten minutes or more while we finished the cocktails and salad. Then I had to ask them to look for the other two entrees, waited another five minutes and by then entree #1 was definitely cold. Bruh. I know they were busy but ugh. Also if you get in before 6 for dinner happy hour prices are good. Not a ton of great choices in the immediate area. Stumbled across this place while exploring Santa Monica. Can't believe we didn't make it here sooner with how often we end up down here. Step inside and you'll feel like you're transported back in time with it's elegant, art-deco style decor and design. Despite it being loud and lively, the seating area seems to have different sections that allow you to feel a bit more private in your dining experience. Happy hour is 100% where it's at - cocktails are half off, and they have some incredible drinks here. Each one is uniquely crafted and elevated from the average cocktail you will get elsewhere. Really enjoyed their Japanese Dream as they were able to perfectly incorporate matcha into the drink. The big winner for me, though, was their French Apple Cart - really hit that fall, apple spice flavor. Great food options. Both their smash burger and chicken sandos were delicious. The Frisia salad that comes with it was better. I would recommend the salads or smashbuger, my friends like them both. I loved the coziness of the half booths on the opposite wall from the bar where my small group gathered. The entire building has an art deco vibe that extends into the 2nd floor where the bathrooms are located. Their use of mirrors to extend the warm lighting is ingenious! I also love how ornate and beautiful the bar and walls are throughout, with bottles and drawers and books stacked to the ceiling. We had a disappointing experience here. We dined in, ordered food, and paid for everything. At the end, I asked for an ice water to go. I had already finished the water at the table, and since the drink I ordered was still hot, I poured it into the cup with ice to cool it down. We were sitting outside and it was hot out. Shortly after, I noticed two staff members come out and look at our table, then go back inside. A manager named Jane came out and told us we weren't allowed to take our drinks to go. It was uncomfortable and embarrassing, especially since we hadn't even left the table we were still seated. I later called the restaurant to speak with a manager, and the same person, Jane, answered. She cut me off and didn't give me a chance to explain. Overall, the way the situation was handled felt unnecessary and rude.
