We wanted to get out of the city so headed 45 minutes west to the edges of St. Charles County. We stayed at an amazing AirBnB (Red Mule Ranch) and then decided to go to Cedar Lake Cellars. There are a ton of wineries in the St. Louis and Southern Illinois area. I've been to a lot of them, but had never been to Cedar Lake Cellars. It is a well known winery and event space just west of St. Louis. There are two main options for when you go. The Barrell Room is a large barn that has a mixture of beer, wine, and mixed drinks. This is the more casual of the two areas. There are large tables inside, and then an open patio area. The Barrell room doesn't have food itself, but just outside is a BBQ stand that also caters to patrons sitting outside. This is where my wife and I sat for about an hour or so before dinner. It had a lot of bachelor parties and larger groups. This area also has live music on the weekends. The second main place to eat and drink (skipping over the outdoor BBQ area) is the restaurant and tasting room. This is more of a formal dining room. The menu was modest but had a mixture of steaks, sandwiches, soups, and appetizers. The prices were very reasonable, and we very much enjoyed our food. The service was good, although maybe a bit overworked, and overall we had zero complaints. I got prime rib with two sides for around $35 which is a great deal. I was actually surprised at how reasonable the prices were. It just makes it that much easier to order a couple glasses of wine. Beyond the two main indoor/outdoor eating areas there are a number of other wedding venues on the property. There is also an stage and the venue hosts outdoor concerts. When we were there this aspect of the property wasn't being used. The overall property felt immense. It is a shame as it definitely felt like the winery could have a lot more people there than we saw, there were probably 75 tables/benches (or more) outside and only a handful had people. It could be that the heat was keeping people away, or just that wineries are declining in popularity from their peak a few years ago. Either way, we had a great time.

The atmosphere was laid-back, relaxing, and the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a special day together. The food was delicious, and the frozen sangrias were absolutely divine! One of the best touches was receiving a complimentary wine glass with every drink, which made the experience even more memorable. The staff was welcoming, the vibes were chill, and the entire winery had such a warm and inviting feel. This is by far my favorite winery, and I can't wait to come back. It was also pouring unexpectedly but that's no ones fault, obviously. The venue was clean but acoustics does make average conversation sound loud that I had trouble hearing the person next to me or the bartenders. I did the non reserve wine sampling which allotted 5 samples for $10. Many of which were made on property with Missouri wines and some west coast offerings. I tend to go for sweeter wines and found my selection to be quite palatable with two standouts as my favorite with the Schitts and Giggles and Lauren's Sweet Vignoles. I really would've preferred the tasting to be separate from the big room and more intimate as to learn more about the wine. Once poured, I was largely left alone standing at the bar where they only offer the sampling and so I felt a little awkward. One gentleman poured rather large portions while the other gave the appropriate amount. A water chaser would've been ideal between both to cleanse the palate. I do think a more intimate setting for sampling is preferred so I am not competing with the rest of the room and I am able to ask questions. The bartenders poured and left and you were on your own!

Made a stop after hitting the wineries to attend their anniversary party and it was so much fun!…read more The distillery, located in New Haven, is nestled between the railroad tracks and the river and both were more than adorable! There were special tastings inside and outside they had fire pits, bales of hay to sit on, fried food on sticks, live music and spiked warm/ cold drinks! They also had these fun fire games set up where you hit a target and a blast of fire lit up the sky - so cool! All of the drinks were amazing and they had a mug deal where if you bought the mug for $10 you could refill it for $3 - this was just for the party though. Everyone was super nice, even when my friend decided to make a hay angel after tripping in the drink line. It's also fun that Paddle Stop Brewery is across the street so we could choose from cocktails or beer. We kept saying that we felt like we stepped into Hallmark movie, with all the small town charm! This is an annual event and we can't wait to make the stop next year!!
