I stopped in to purchase a few small fish for my well establish fish tank. Noticeably they had changed up the of their available livestock. No longer do they carry lizards and kittens, only fish. It has been a while since I was in the store so this might have happened awhile ago. When I called earlier in the day, I should have heeded the underlying warning, "I think we got some of those in today" and not purchased the fish the same day they were introduced to the retailers tanks. Fish don't do well with temperature changes, let alone 2 new tanks in 1 day so rightly, so all six of the neon tetra and the pleco dead with in 24 hours. I should have simply flushed the money down the toilet and saved the drive time. They should allow their fish to acclimate prior to selling them. read more

My daughters fish,Mosquito Bite, died a few months ago. The tank was left empty and she missed her Betta fish. Her dad has known about this place for years but he never went in. Last week we took our daughter in to pick out a fish. She decided she wanted more than one fish. The staff there was very informative and they took their time to show us what fish would work well with the type and size of tank we have. They have such a huge selection of fish to choose from. It was very nice to walk around the store and look at all the fish. They sell more than just fish, they had small lizards, turtles and all of the goodies needed to take care of your fish. My daughter is very happy with the three little fish she selected. We will be back. read more

I've been going to Tropi-Quatics for 20 plus years. The old management really let the place go and the new management in place has been really turning it around. They have a wide variety of plants, smaller fish, and shrimp for the aquascape enthusiasts. They even have a dedicated section to Cichlids, just to the right as you enter the store. I just love this pet shop. I have been buying tropheus from Dennis since 2010. He is very fair and offers discounts. What I love about this store is that he has rare fish. The quality is 10/10, and he gives you a discount. What more can you ask for? This is my fav fish shop in Illinois. Worth the drive because we come from Chicago. Worst customer service. Been here three times and each time watched the same workers talk with each other instead of helping customers. Waited over 20 minutes for one guy while he helped everyone. Asked another guy to help out and he let me know that he was on his lunch break and couldn't help us. Umm, this is not a corporation dude, it's a fish store. Was told to come at a specific time to meet the owner, who left early. Ended up walking into the store ready to buy fish and left each time with nothing because no one could help. I have been here a few time already, and I really like this place, they have a decent selection of fish. Also the staff is very knowledgeable and friendly, they assisted me with picking out Cichlids that would be compatible with the Cichlids I already have. Whether I'm in to ask questions about the size & type worms they carry or to buy several fish and dog toys, I'm given the same help, courtesy and assistance. Whether I'm buying reptile & fish food; bird, reptile, fish supplies, tank accessories; dog, bird treats, I'm treated like I'm a VIP customer. When I have an issue with one of my pets, of which I have many and multiple species, the staff at Tropi-Quatics are usually knowledgeable enough to steer me in the right direction to perfection. The fish I've purchased at Tropi-Quatics are healthy - several I've had for 4 yrs. Not only do I prefer to frequent small, local family businesses instead of PetSmart, the prices at Tropi-Quatics for the same or similar items also at PetSmart, are the same or less. The quality of generally non-branded items - plants, baby brine shrimp, crickets, mice, worms, are seemingly better (and the live tank plants look better and last longer) at Tropi-Quatics than anywhere else in the Chicago area. read more

My favorite pet store. My purchases are generally limited to crickets, worms, UV lights, and heat lamps, but I can depend on them to have what I need. This is where I purchased by bearded dragon five years ago, and he's as healthy as can be. The staff is friendly. In addition to a focus on aquariums, they have a very decent selection of merchandise for reptiles and small mammals. Dog and bird stuff too. Prices are a tad higher than at Petsmart, but you can sign up for a Pet Club Member Card that gets you 10% off non-live goods. read more

The store is ok, went just to shop around and like most fish stores they're equipment and food where slightly overpriced, the employees don't really give a lot of importance to customers since I got walked by a couple of the employees, reason I'm giving a low rating is because as I walked through the fish aisle I noticed a couple fishes had Ich (white spot disease) and they looked as they weren't gonna make it. This place is so cool! First of all, they have such a great selection of freshwater and salt water fish. It's a lot of fun to just come here and check out what they have because there is always something new. They have awesome fish that you may have never heard of and the typical ones you have. All of my fish are from Tropi-Quatics and totally healthy. The next best thing about this place are the guys that works here. They know their fish. Ask them anything about any of the fish and they will help you and give you interesting facts about the fish. My boyfriend comes here all the time to ask questions about our tank such as 'what are these spots on our fish' or 'can these types of fish go together.' they aren't just about making a sale. They are honest and will tell you if you shouldn't have a fish in a tank with a different fish or if a certain fish needs its buddies to be happy. They also do free water tests so that's a plus. If you have fish needs, this is DEFINITELY the place to go. It's like a local aquarium in there! read more

Awesome pet fish store to get your tropical or salty fish tank on!! Every worker is knowledgeable, helpful and honest about fish. They have a large assortment of types/breeds of fish and their prices are extremely reasonable. They also have some lizards and are well stocked for any accessories that you will need for lizards and fish. They have an assortment of live and frozen food as well. My fish unfortunately died the first round (due to no water cycling) :( It was very sad, but they gave me store credit. This place used to be great when the owner had people working for him that cared. I guess he's back in charge running the show. He comes off as rude. I used to bring them coral, in return I'd get 1/2 of what they sold it for and be able to use it as store credit. For months he'd tell me he'll take them next week. After several calls over months asking if I could drop them off he kept telling me they'd sit too long. I offered to donate them since they were over growing in my frag tank and he refused. What store owner wouldn't want free product to sell for 100% profit?? Their coral selection is withering away and always the same boring fish. If your interested in marine fish and want to be amazed with coral and different fish your better off going to Aqua Pros in Glen Ellyn. Update: My husband and I purchased two guppies and a platy from this store. Within two days all three were showing signs of illness, then died one at a time over the next three days. Since then, our previously healthy and happy tank has obviously been contaminated. Now the rest of our fish that we've had for weeks before adding the new ones are all showing the same symptoms of the fish from this store. We have been working hard with another fish store to get our tank healthy again and save our fish. We will not be going back to this store ever again. read more

I love this place. Provided, I have been coming here for years. If you are looking for anything cat related, don't come here. They specialize in fish. They occasionally have kittens for sale as well as a few other small animals like gerbils and rabbits. They never have puppies and their reptile selection is meager. They don't even have cat food here. For my needs though, it works. I own two tarantulas and my purchasing is limited to crickets every week as well as other miscellany hodgepodge. For being a small, local, and privately owned pet store, I've got to say I'm impressed with the quality of fish. Don't get me wrong, when you walk in, you'll be a little overwhlemed by all of the stuff floating around in this store. There's a bunch of used fish equiptment, tanks, and various products that are shelved for multiple types of pets. Once you come in more than once though, you'll know exactly where to look for what you need. My favorite part of the store though, is the fish area in the back. Let me say, they just recently re-did their fish section. All of the tanks are sparkley, lights are new, the place looks great. The store carries a large selection of both salt and fresh water fish. They also have larger Koi for ponds. They carry plants as well for your tank, if you choose to go that route. I bought 5 neon tetras from Tropi-Quatics about a year ago, and they are holding up nicely. Haven't lost one yet! I always apprecaite a fish store then their fish actually last longer than a month. Go to any chain pet store and buy fish, you'll see what I mean. Overall, I really like visiting this store. It's a little out of the way for my boyfriend and I, but we make the trip every couple of months. read more

I used to give this places a 5/5 but recently with the new change of ownership I have found it to be very less welcoming. I went in to purchase some feeders for my frog and bearded dragons and was passed by all but one of the employees. She was very nice and helped me find the feeders I wanted and told me when the other ones i wanted would be in stock but it just is very different then how the old management and owner ran the place. I feel much less confident in going in for anything reptile related anymore as the staff seems to specialize only in fish and not have as much knowledge about them. I may have simply come in on a busy day but I expect more from such a reputable establishment that has never steered me wrong in the past. read more

Everything has been excellent, with the prices right on par with elsewhere and the fish healthy and without disease. I would highly recommend. Asked for assistance with adding a fish to our tank. The person who assisted us said to get a Yellow Copperband Butterfly fish. Didn't mention it is very difficult to keep and that it won't eat. Okay, still love this place BUT they got rid of their 3 day guarantee on fish if you are in the club. Apparently, some people can't keep fish alive for more than 3 days if their lives depended on it. This sucks for us because once in a great while we purchase a fish that is just sick and through no fault of our own it doesn't survive acclimation. but, they still have the best stock in the burbs as well as a friendly and knowledgeable staff.
