I've been to multiple tropical jerks but this is by far the best location. It is take-out only and cash only. The service could be better, especially since they sometimes mess up orders and forget items, but even with all that, the food is so amazing that I still come back. The jerk pork is juicy with a good crisp and plenty of flavor. The oxtail gravy with the sweet sauce on the rice is perfect. If you like spice, get the hot sauce on the side it adds a lot of flavor without the heat being overpowering. Heard mixed reviews but wanted to try it for myself. Order large oxtails and large chicken curry. The oxtails did taste like they were made fresh that day, they must've been in the pot for a few days, the sauce was dense, the meat wasn't abundant and the flavor was concentrated in an oddly sweet way. The chicken curry dish on the other hand was delicious, the vibrant, spicy, colorful sauce out it up on every forkful. However be ready to recover shattered fragments from chicken bones from your mouth at random. This creates an unsettling chewing experience as you have gently bit down and rotate the food in your mouth seeking out a random shard of bone. This is because a cleaver is used to cut up the drumsticks and other parts off the chicken. Why chop bones with a cleaver ? Insanity and a distraction to the otherwise fantastic curry sauce. The portion size is an issue too. They're generous with the rice and stingy with the meat and sauce. Without the meat and sauce, you can't eat the rice. They need to have a heavier hand on the portions for the price they're getting, 2 large dishes cost north of $40, cash only. read more

First of all, the food is good. The issue comes in the service. As my organization wanted to do a catering order, we were given the runaround, leaving us to ultimately choose another place. When calling we were reassured that our method of payment, card, would be fine. We were told to come in and present the card for payment which we did the next day, however upon entering we were informed that only cash was accepted. Despite this, they have an option available to order in advance online (that accepts card) but we were informed to do otherwise for our catering order. When we did visit the restaurant to try out their options prior to putting in our catering order, the jerk pork and curry goat were favorites. However, they were out of a lot of menu options including the Rasta pasta (which was going to be a main portion of the order). Regardless of the issues in service, the food that is available is very good. We ordered chicken foot soups and also shared an order of fried chicken as well as an order of oxtail with rice & beans and cabbage. Portions were quite large and the food was very filling. We are a little more than half the food, so I'm expecting another two meals or so. Food was seasoned on the milder side yet was quite savory. I suspect a generous amount of oil was used in the cooking but nothing came out greasy or oily except for the oxtail with is expected. I liked the fried chicken and oxtail equally. In a nondescript strip mall in Uniondale you will find a small Jamaican shop that prepares the most delicious foods. The Jerk Chicken is consistently amazing. I've found that it is the best of any other places in New York. It is seasoned with the most delicious jerk flavoring, very moist, never dry, hearty portions, and always super fresh. It usually comes as a meal with rice and peas, and "salad" which is really stir fried cabbage. Prices are pretty reasonable and vary based on portion size. You have the option of getting oxtail sauce and sweet sauce with this dish. Just say yes! The flavors are outstanding. I've also had the oxtail a number of times. The sauce is delicious and is prepared with large beans. The meat is extremely tasty. Sometimes it is very tender and other times less. Today I tried the chicken foot soup for the first time. It was incredible. It is like chicken soup with a kick and more hearty. It is also loaded with vegetables. Service is not particularly friendly but very efficient. Your order at the register, pay cash (only) and then wait while they prepare your food in the open kitchen. While waiting there I pretend that I am back in Jamaica. I am so frustrated with the service and incompetence here. Ordered and paid for 1lb of Jerk Pork, when I got home to Arverne, NY (45 mins away),I had Stew Chicken and White Rice. Tried calling, memory full. One time halfway to work when I opened my bag none of the 2 sodas I ordered were in the bag. Tried calling busy signal the entire time. Two weeks ago after work paid for my order plus a bread, after driving 10 minutes I realized they hadnt given me the bread, I went back for the bread. These small chain of restaurants out on the Island are pretty much all the same. I started out going to this location first, typical JA attitude behind the counter but that never phased me. I always try to be polite and in return they're polite to me. As for the food, the large Oxtail is good and can easily serve 2 ppl. They're fried chicken with sweet sauce is also good, but most importantly their beef patties are nice and spicy and remind me a little of being in JA. I've been going to the Grand Ave location recently, same attitude scenarios but as for the food it's missing a little something and doesn't have that appeal to me any longer... can't quite put a finger on it yet. Tropical Jerk is an incredible local spot to go to for jerk chicken. I haven't ordered anything other than the jerk chicken, but it's phenomenal. The chicken is tender, flavorful and perfectly spicy. I've tried almost all the typical Jamaican meals. My regulars are the jerk chicken with sweet sauce (if you don't get the sweet sauce then you're not living right!), the curry goat is awesome sauce, the soups are fantastic! (Chicken foot, Cow foot, Beef...etc). The rice is never dry, the porridge is also amazing. I could really go on and on.
