I love smoothies. I have basically been sad and depressed for YEARS due to the fact that Michigan does not have a Jamba Juice. What does Jamba Juice have against Michigan??!?! Really!!! I was excited when this place opened. YAY smoothies. Sadly I am just not impressed. The smoothies are ok. They have this kale/spinach/tropical fruit thing that I think is pretty delish but the smoothies always taste kind of watered down here. Also, the employees are incredibly rude. Every single time I have come in I have received a side of attitute with my order. I don't know why they are so unhappy but I don't think I have ever seen a smiling face in here. So yeah...its pretty meh for me. It fills my smoothie craving when I have one but otherwise I head to beyond juice in Birmingham. At least there I can get a smoothie with a smile. read more

The only reason it is a 4 star rather than a 5 it's because of the disaster of a parking lot. The staff is nice and friendly. I even used my first discount for checking in on YELP! Sometimes all a girl needs on a hot summer day is a thick fruity smoothie. I got seriously spoiled by Joy Yee Noodles in Chicago where they converted whole bananas, quarts of strawberries, and pineapples into luxe smoothies scared by the odd spritz of yogurt or tea as a base. I wanted Michigan to offer a similarly thick and rapturous experience. Nothing against thin smoothies, but sometimes I want to suck a pureed orchard with the consistency of molten concrete through a straw. Tropical Smoothie Cafe gets some popular reviews from friends, so off I went in search of the store. It's in a weird corner location where access is blocked by a tiny barbershop, so coming off Main Street requires careful attention not to end up in a squishy parking lot unconnected to the shop. The drive through has an extremely tight turn in there, too, so avoid scratching up your car's paint job if you choose to take that route. I also have this habit of mistaking the Grand Traverse Pie Company location on Maple with the Tropical Smoothie Cafe, much like I swear Peter Gabriel moonlights as Phil Collins. Don't ask why. My mind has simply made that parallel. So too smoothies and pie, apparently. As I rolled up, the menu has the ubiquitous list of specialty smoothies, another panel for additions, and yet another for seasonal smoothies. For a newcomer this can be an overwhelming experience and unless you know what you want, expect to spend a few minutes parsing through kale and fruit, the standard orange and banana plus berries, and half a dozen other options. Fortunately staff are quite patient when it's slow, as when I arrived. Otherwise a pro tip: go inside to get a good idea of what is what. Otherwise I felt rather pressured with a car behind me and the cashier asking me 'Are you ready yet?' about 20 seconds after I pulled up and asked for a moment to read their seasonal choices. I ended up going with a green tea based smoothie and it came out quite well, thick and fairly flavourful. Less ice gets used rather than more, a definite plus. The consistency was nice and didn't melt out immediately, a curse of some other popular smoothie places. On the other hand, this is a sometimes treat for me at around $5 for a 16 oz option, if memory serves, and it gets only more expensive if you start adding various powders, extra fruit or boosters. Pretty typical for the smoothie set. Consider that smoothies aren't much different calorically from sandwiches or raw fruit and yoghurt, and you gain little from a health vantage to justify that cost. Staff showed some of the same apathy reported by other Yelpers. They were not exactly quick about delivering on the smoothie, asking me to park up at a spot near the door where I waited long enough to read two or three news articles, brush my hair, and wonder if someone else got my green tea confection. Nope, it just turned out to be that pokey. Definitely this is the place for a lazy morning and not your morning rush hour stop. read more

For starters, most of the smoothies contain sugar. It's not clearly marked so if your diabetic or trying to watch your carbs, ask if your drink has sugar and if so ask for the sugar substitute or none at all. Second, a lot of the ingredients are made from concentrates. With that said they feature several good smoothies but I refrain from recomending any of them. The location is clean and bright. Service is so so. They do a very good business. Better substitute than ice cream. Check out their lunch menu which is preferable to their drinks. There are also no soft drinks served. None. Stopped by this location as it was on my way home. When I pulled in there was one car at the drive through and I am not sure how long they had been there. I placed my order and pulled around. I waited at least 5 minutes with the car in front not getting their order. The car then pulled up and I paid (after being asked to confirm my order) and the car in front still didn't have their order. After a few more minutes they received their order which was one Smoothie. After they pulled away the employee then proceeded to make my order. They are beyond slow. Maybe a year ago this would have gotten 3-4 stars, but this place seems to have gone downhill. I used to really enjoy making a quick stop through the drive through and was always satisfied with my purchase as well as the service. Lately, however, I've been left disappointed with both. I can't speak for service when you actually go into the cafe, but the drive through has been painfully slow the last few times I've been there, say within the last 2 months. Not only are they slow, but some (not all) of the employees are rude. I tend to go at odd times, so there is rarely anyone in front or behind me in the drive through, nor do I ever see any customers at the counter when I get to the window, so I have no idea why it sometimes take so long. As for the rudeness...it just seems like some young girls who don't care about their job and don't want to be there. (Oh, and one girl completely missed one of the smoothies I ordered, even after I spoke clearly, one at a time. There was a brief pause after I finished my order, she asked if that was it, to which I confirmed, then was told to drive around. Did not repeat the order, I only realized she screwed up when she mumbled the total to me as she swiped my card. The card was already back in my hand before I could tell her that she missed my second smoothie, which seemed to irritate her and amp up the rudeness) Now for the smoothies..they have been VERY hit or miss lately. I was under the assumption that there were instructions with pre measured scoops and what-not to ensure consistency, however that does not seem to be the case. Last muscle blaster smoothie I got was good- good consistency & good flavor. This time- terrible! I'm trying to choke it down right now! No flavor whatsoever. Tastes bland and watered down, which seems to be the trend with smoothies I've gotten lately, and for $5 a smoothie, I would expect SOME flavor at least! Also, it is an odd consistency...sort of like one big lump that wasn't in the blender quite long enough. I'm disappointed I have to give such a negative review. I keep going back there hoping for improvement, but I just haven't seen it. Unfortunately there really aren't many other options. I have come to this Tropical Smoothie for years now and have never been too impressed with their customer service. I have been dieting recently and the apple smoothies are perfect so I get them from here often. I came in today to pick up smoothies for my mom, brother, and me which I ordered on the app. When I got in line with my brother there was one other person in front of me. After the person in front of me was helped the employe working the cashier left. So I figured that someone would be back to help shortly so I didn't say anything. After 15 minutes of the workers walking by and looking at me (none of them even said hello or acknowledged me) I started getting frustrated. I went out to my car to grab my mom cause I had no idea what to do because everyone was ignoring me. 2 minutes after she started standing with us a worker came up and asked if we had been helped. After telling him that we had an order for pick up he went and grabbed it from the fridge and gave it to us. On the way home we all tried our smoothies and they were awful! They tasted like water mixed with cinnamon. No apple, no banana, no peanut butter. I will be going out of my way to avoid this location in the future. read more

Why are there not more smoothie places in Michigan? This is an awesome little place that more people should know about. I haven't seen too many locations - there is this one and the Flint location, and I would like to see a few more around. It is a traditional, good smoothie place. They have more food than your typical Jamba or Robeks, and the smoothies are just as delicious. Good menu, many many choices. Normally, I am an extremely understanding person and never write any reviews but this location is one of the worst tropical smoothies I have ever been to. I used to frequent here but I've slowly stopped coming. I love tropical smoothie, but this location just has poor service. I've only been a handful of times the past few months and every single time, they have messed up my order. The order is not complicated, all I ask is for no sugar and ALWAYS have to walk back inside and ask for a new smoothie. Today, I was the only car in the drive thru this morning. I still waited nearly 10 minutes for just one smoothie. I knew as soon as I tasted it that they added the sugar. I went back inside to ask for it with no sugar. Instead of making the correct smoothie with no sugar, I received the complete wrong smoothie all together. After wasting close to 15 minutes I just tossed it and walked out instead of asking for a new smoothie again. Six dollars and 15 minutes I will never get back again. I won't be coming back. I love Tropical Smoothie Cafe! I'm from Arizona, and finding a good (healthy) smoothie joint is tough, out here. I am obsessed with this establishment! That being said, I gave THIS location one star because of the employee that greeted me. I will not play the name game though. I walked in, excited because I was craving a turkey wrap and a Health Nut smoothie (that I add peanut-butter and strawberries to, it's like a PB&J). I saw the young woman and I smiled and asked "Hi, how are you?" After she said "Hello". She didn't answer, instead she just looked at her POS system and continued to ask what I'd like. I was just a little upset that she A: didn't care to ask how I was (even when I asked her how she was) B: Completely ignored me when I was being polite by asking how she was doing. And C: didn't even smile. Not even once. I work in the restaurant industry, I understand that there are times you aren't having a good day because of personal issues and you just don't want to be there (trust me, I get it), however, when you're working you shouldn't let it show. "Don't wear your heart on your sleeve". Guests come in to order food and enjoy their time. So when I went in there, I was hoping to be greeted with a smile (I could care less if it was fake, I fake my smiles when I have to, as well). I've been a regular costumer here for the past year and a half. Today I went to the drive through and ordered a chia banana boost smoothie with strawberry. I did not receive this smoothie, I received some other type of smoothie. I took one sip and turned right around to let them know my order wasn't right. I pulled up and the first thing they said is that I didn't order that. When we pulled up to the window, she said it was what I ordered, a chia banana boost. Been here couple times and the customer service is better than another franchise on Telegraph Rd and Square Lake Rd...but only during slow hours not during lunch time. During slow hours, I ordered some items and wanted to substitute the animal carcus with "veggie chicken" and there were no issues. Not even when i wanted smoothies with no cow pus yogurt. I would recommend this place during this time. During lunch time, I ordered the same thing above and they screwed up my order by putting cow pus cheese all over it. I had to scrape it off. This was my first time trying out Tropical Smoothie Cafe and my results were quite good. The food was fresh and the smoothie, (pineapple delight) was very tasty! After a long day of driving, my boyfriend and I decided to break up the drive and grab a smoothie on our way through Michigan. The staff seemed friendly enough, giving us a free smoothie for joining the text club. All seemed well until my boyfriend's credit card was compromised at a Rite Aid in Rochester Hills a few hours later. Makes sense, the smoothies took about 15 minutes and the attendee knew we were from out of town. This is the only transaction made in Michigan on that card. Started going here for about a year now and I love it. The smoothies are great and near perfection. Made to order every time and have never messed up a smoothie that I have requested even special order ones. Not a big fan of them removing the 1/2 salad with a smoothie deal, not sure why they did it even, but I am sure they had their reasons. Parking lot is a bit small and yes there is a Barber Shop there and I am told the owner is not willing to sell, however there is a vacant building that I believe the owner of Tropical Smoothie Cafe has acquired so I heard and rumor has it they may turn that building into additional parking. Not a big fan of Drive thru customers getting higher priority then the lobby customers. Also in going inline with other yelp reviewers on this place, I do find at times that a person who has ordered a smoothie after me has gotten theirs first.. However staff is friendly, helpful and I have never had any issues with service from this place. I will keep coming back and NOTE: I love how you can order via the app, Online or by phone and they will have it ready when you get there! Overall, yes I would recommend this place. read more

But yesterday on one of my too-routine-mad-dashes-to-inhale-some-food-before-the-next-thing, I saw the girl on the curb waving around the sign for "Wraps, Salads, Smoothies." Since it was either that or Arby's, I turned in. I wasn't expecting much. It has a cutesy island theme in the little dining room, but for an adventurous eater this simply appeared to be another Mr. Pita-meets-Panera kind of chain. Wraps and sandwiches are $6.99, you get a choice of chips or fruit. The chip choices were all manner of baked, plus Sunchips - score. On this particular day, all were 40%, another score. I had a Cranberry Walnut Chicken Salad in a wrap, grilled. Not bad at all. But the star of this show, er, island, is of course, the smoothie. They're enormous, rivaling the west coast Jamba giant. I saw the photos. I thought to myself, "Self, you already know what those are going to taste like, and that would be WAY too much food." So I walked away, thinking that would be the end of it. But, lo, this very eve, I found myself going BACK to this place. Is it the lure of the drive thru when I'm already in my PJ's, hours deep into homework procrastination? Or was it just that the line at Checkers was too long? Maybe a bit of both. For $7.29 you can make it an Island Combo, which comes with a choice of 2 items OR $9.99 gets you the Paradise Combo that is any sandwich plus any smoothie. Cue the Eddie Money, 'cause I bought my ticket to paradise . I opted for the Health Nut, which is blueberries, mango, banana, almonds and (for me) soy protein. Today's promo was free supplement so I added Vitamin C for my recovery from bronchitis. Results? I sent three illegal text-and-drives and updated my Facebook ON THE WAY HOME because I just had to say how delicious this was! Go try it. And I know people will say it's pricey but for me, considering the financial, health and satisfaction deficit I face from the fast food alternative, this is actually a great deal. So I go in one day, and realize they have sandwiches....wraps....salads...paninis, you name it. I tried a jamaican jerk chicken wrap, and it was really, really good....way better than I was expecting. I have been wanting a healthy place to eat in the area for a while, and the only option is a Panera at 15 and crooks. I am ecstatic that this place is now open, and even better, actually GOOD. haven't had a smoothie yet, plan to try one soon. The variety of sandwiches and wraps they have is great, and everything looks really tasty. Next time I'm going they have a roast beef and horseradish sandwich that looks good ( i love horseradish). Being from California, the land of smoothies on every corner, I have missed my favorite local smoothies for the 6 years that I've lived in Michigan. Tropical Smoothie Cafe is the answer to my prayers! I went last week and tried the Health Nut smoothie with blueberries, mango, banana and pineapple and it was delicious! This morning I tried the Coffee Nut (wow, I'm starting to sound a bit nutty aren't I?) and it was fantasticly incredible! Not too sweet, not too nutty, not too coffeey. It was just right. I haven't tried their food yet, but it's next on my agenda for sure. The smoothies are a great value for what you get, a huge cup that not only stays cold for hours but fits perfectly in my car's cupholder. I'll be stopping here for smoothies quite often even when it's bitter cold out! read more

This is the slowest TSC I've ever been to, with the worst customer service. I waited in the drive-thru for 15 minutes and then ended up having to go inside because they never brought my smoothie and food out. Their excuse was "being understaffed" even though it was 8:30pm and there were no other customers in the store. I've never had a good experience with this location. read more

I started coming here a few months ago and it quickly became my lunch spot at least once or twice a week. I've learned that the drive through usually takes at least 10-15 minutes but it's okay if you're willing to wait. Unfortunately I had an awful experience here a few weeks ago. I ordered a smoothie and a sandwich. When I got back to my desk at work to eat my lunch I discovered that they gave me someone's half-eaten sandwich. There was only one half of it left and there was a big bite taken out of it with the crust mostly picked off. I know that this was obviously a mistake, and not intentional, but it still sucks when you pay $12 for a meal and you get someone's garbage (or leftovers at best). Terrible, Horrible service. I actually like the smoothies and the food is ok so I have been there repeatedly and every single time, without fail, I am asked to pull my car up to the door as others are served there smoothies. This has happened to me literally everytime I have been there without fail, and I am not ordering anything out of the ordinary just a smoothie and a sandwich. Anyhow, last time I was there when they asked me to pull up I said to a middle age African American lady who may have been manager, that I would prefer not too, and she told me I HAVE too. I then told her that I don't have to do anything, but that they have to make my food and they other people have to wait because they came after me. She got all red in the face and walked away, she finally brought me my smoothie, but I poured it out because I though she might have spit in it. After reading lots of mixed reviews I text Island2 to 30364 and received my coupon for a Buy One Get One Free smoothie. I tried the Island Green with sugar and the multivitamin boost. My daughter got the Paradise Point. We went through the drive thru placed our order and were told to pull ahead. I then held my breath about the dreaded wait that other reviewers spoke about. But within 5 minutes our order arrived! Boy were they delicious and big. We were full after drinking half and saved the rest for later. Next time I'm going to try it without sugar. Beware of this place. Thinking you have "time for a quick smoothie" simply isn't so. This tropical smoothie cost me my whole life. I stopped in at 10:30 to grab a smoothie on my way to work, 40 minutes into my wait I came to the realization I would be late to work if I continued waiting, and to my horror also realized there was no escape from the treachery of the drive through lane. I was crying in the drive through, still waiting when my boss called to tell me I had been late for the last time.
