If I had to choose a last meal, it would come from Troppo. Troppo is the place for top notch food and service, all in the shadow of the magestic state capital building. Their stuffed pork chops and ceasar salad are two fo the best things I've ever eaten. The servers are professional and efficient. The prices are what you'd expect to pay at a higher end restuarant (your meal will run you $18-24), but well worth it for the quality of food you receive. Anytime I'm in Lansing, I make it a point to stop in for my favorite pork dish - a top chop! read more

I have had many visits to Troppo with friends and family, and I must say that Troppo is one of my favorite restaurants in the Lansing, MI area. I love eating and dining, and was really surprised to see the reviews for Troppo as they definitely don't match all of my great experiences I have had there. Their calamari is definitely the best, hands down, in the area. I also love their vegetarian spring rolls and charbroiled lamb chop appetizers. The chef's here truly understand how to make food work together, I have never been disappointed with a dish I have ordered. My favorite is the Shrimp and Scallops dish, it's melt in your mouth AMAZING! I have also had their Filet A La Troppo, perfectly cooked medium rare and with the yummy zip sauce as well as the stuffed pork chop "Pork Chop A La Troppo" and that is really good too, literally tastes like autumn. My fiancé almost always orders steak and really enjoys the strip steak with the gorgonzola crust, and of course the delicious whipped potatoes! Dessert at Troppo is also a must try! My favorite dessert is the Lemon Layer Cake it is heavenly!!!! But I have also had their Tiramisu is excellent as well. It's not only the food that makes a restaurant experience, the ambiance at Troppo is also one of the best in the area, very relaxing yet filled with energy which my fiancé and I really enjoy; and as far as service goes, there have been 2 times that I have gotten a not so great waiter but usually the service is prompt, friendly and knowledgeable. Once again, Troppo disappoints. My partner and I live about 4 blocks from Troppo. We USED to dine at the location across the street quite often. Back then we knew the staff and they knew and took care of us. Drew (the manager), Melik (server), TJ and Alan (bartenders) and others greeted us by name and consistently were friendly and competent. Since the move, service at the new Troppo has been consistently erratic.... some of the mistakes are simply unacceptable (servers who don't open a bottle of wine set on your table... who don't listen to requests... that you have to hunt down even when they're not busy). My sisters and I had a surprise Birthday party for our Mother at Troppo in December of 2014. I reside on the East Coast, so most of the planning was done through email. All my questions were answered, the food was good, the staff was wonderful, the Governor's West Room (where the party was held) was amazing and very comfortable. No wait on a Wednesday night. Troppo is elegant and classy in appearance. They have a good wine selection and moderate beer selection. We came in for drinks and appetizers. We shared a caprese salad and ahi tuna tartar appetizer. The salad was great and flavorful. The ahi tuna was good but didn't have much flavor. We were also brought a bread basket which had very good bread and a sweet herb butter. Our server was excellent, making recommendations and checking up on us several times. Ah, Troppo ... an oasis of nice in the fast food madness of downtown Lan-ZING. MUCH better for lunch or apps than dinner. Greek salad: perfection. Soups: never fail. Entrees: erratic. Service: daytime - always good; evening - hope for the best, but often have to train your server on the job. Drinks: buying the ambience which is lovely. Favorite place to stop after a downtown event when the 'toothpick food' hasn't been enough, but we don't want a full dinner. That's the thing about Troppo: they haven't managed the consistency for dinner entrees yet & it's been awhile. maybe shorten the selections & get really good at a few?? & pricing issues are, as other reviewers mentioned, sometimes very odd. Overall, though, I recommend. & look forward to their HUGE expansion coming pretty soon: a real boost for downtown. & kudos for Troppo to being downtown - w/both their stores (Tavern on the Square, too) - in the first place. read more

I would classify troppo's as a very decent restaurant where you will not be ashamed to bring somebody to(date,boss, or whatever).Despite the fact that I've only been here once, the waiter knows everything there is on the menu and described it in much detail which is very helpful. Just moved to Lansing and my parents came to visit and wanted to go somewhere nice. Keep in mind that we were preparing to spend over $200 on dinner. We get seated and they are not busy at all. 5 minutes go by, no service. The host brings us water and says our waiter will be with us shortly. 10 minutes go by and nothing still. Took my family of 5 to Troppo for lunch after my sons university graduation. Atmosphere was good but server was very slow to arrive, people who brought food didn't know which end was up. Restaurant was not busy enough to explain the less than professional service. Food was better than average. We go to our fair share of "expensive" restaurants but what really turned me off was the 3.5% FEE Troppo charges you for using a credit card on top of the already overpriced menu. Even my wife (who never ever will tip less than 15%) said "you should have tipped only 5% for that service...". To be fair, it wasn't a completely terrible experience and I am glad there are people who open and run a business like this -but- if you are charging top prices, you better have top service and fare. Appropriately named; "Troppo" (means "too much" in Italian) ... is exactly what you will blurt out when you see the check ;-) read more

Food is consistent and usually vert good but service is very inconsistent. First, we waited 15 minutes for a server while those around us, who were seated after us, were being waited on....and when i went to the front desk to say something I was made to feel like it was my problem. Then it doesn't help when food comes out sporadically and some guests are served literally 10 minutes apart and then the "favorite" dessert of our waitress, the strawberry shortcake, which features whipped cream, is brought to the table with no whipped cream because the kitchen didn't have any!!?? Really? Oh...and no apology for the service or the dessert being "incomplete". I think it's time for Troppo management to step back and take a look at the entire experience. read more

Eh. Troppo, I wanted to like you. I was excited about a real red-leather-and-wooden-paneling sort of place, with your interior looking like something used in a Sopranos shoot. I had visions of discrete service, perfect steaks and mobsters bedecked with pinky rings in a corner booth. Well, there were no mobsters (all the better, I suppose), but I hear this is a favorite haunt of the Michigan politicos. Anyways, the food. It took about 20 minutes and three trips back to our table before the waiter and the bartender figured out my drink order (A Negroni, just ask me.), but service was speedy, efficient and very polite. The apps we had were good. The tempura-batter portobello mushrooms didn't get soggy (but how?! Mushrooms are so wet...) and were drizzled with reduced balsamic vinegar. The stuffed acorn squash was pretty good; filled with sauteed spinach and undercooked but flavorful risotto. The salads were fresh and tasty. The entrees were disappointing. It's been more than a year since I've had a steak, so I ordered a NY strip, med-rare. It came to the table at med-well. I sent it back, something I've never done and felt terrible about, and the manager came to the table, profusely apologized and comped my drink. The steak came out perfectly cooked, but bland! Oh so bland...The other entrees at the table just needed salt. Unseasoned steaks, unseasoned duck breasts. Too bad. The desserts were good: a fig-and-Nutella tart was rich and figgy, but could have benefited from more hazelnuts. Good choice for a special evening out or an afterwork drink. Prices are a bit high, but food is good. Drew (manager) and Jason (exec. chef) are great guys and treat you well. Nice ambience; and its nice to support downtown merchants. The one mistake is the hefty price for substitutions. Actually its not really a "substitution," its an add-on. For example, if you didn't want the potato choice that came with your entree and want to "substitute" fries, you can't. You have to pay a hefty add-on for a side order of fries, which if I recall correctly is something like $8 FOR A SIDE OF FRIES. Guess I just shouldn't eat fries - for more reasons than one. Squash soup is amazing. Favorite dinner entree is the pork tenderloin. Oh, and there's one female bartender who tends to evesdrop and butt into your private conversation without being "invited in" when you're sitting at the bar. Last weekend my husband, my son and myself had the good fortune to dine at a wonderful restaurant by the name of Troppo, in Lansing. My son was recently accepted at MSU and we were visiting the campus. Parents,I highly recommend that you make this a part of your college visit. It is a delightful change from the usual pizza and burgers establishments that you expect to find surrounding any college campus. Luckily, we just happened to stumble upon this delightful restaurant but we now plan on making a special visit there every time we are in town. The setting in Troppo is upscale and inviting, the service excellent, the food delicious and innovative. All three of us were extremely pleased with our entrees. Went there last night with a group of friends. We waited for 25 minutes before our waitress, Laura, even took our drink order. This was an early indication of the poor service we would receive from her for the remainder of our visit. Laura doesn't seem to like her job very much. She was very snide and ignored our table. One of my friends had to actually follow her to another table to get her attention. On top of that, the food was lukewarm, not even hot. The Calamari was soggy and cold. It was even slimy. Disgusting. The Spinach Manicotti could've been better. It had a bad taste. Never will return. The atmosphere and the decor was nice, but the service was the pits. Just had the scallops for a light dinner after my waitress recommended it. Wonderful bechamel sauce with boudin potatoes and wilted spinach. I wasn't feelin potatoes tonite although they were good. BUT the spinach with a bite of roasted garlic and the bechamel sauce was awesome, actually my favorite part of the whole dish. Wish there had been more! Not a good experience for our first and probably last time at Tropos! Even though the place was almost empty for lunch, we waited 50 mins for brunch, the crab cakes benedict had almost hard poached eggs, one cold fried potato and no leeks as stated on the menu. After sending the dish back for hot potatoes, it was returned swimming in clarified butter, which I assumed was the separated hollandaise sauce! (maybe microwaved) My husband chose a smoked salmon fruit plate, which left a lot to be desired. Since when does a fruit plate consist of a cut up underripe pear and two segments of orange? Well? Service was an absolute disgrace.... I won't ever go back. Went there for the first time and ended up leaving before our entrees even came out. Got to the restaurant and none of our drink or food orders were taken in a timely manner, not even close to a reasonable time period. Then, my date and I finally get our entree orders in and wait for 1 hour and 15 minutes without our meals arriving to the table (even though we were assured twice in that time period that the food would be right out). After being at the restaurant for 2 hours with nothing to show but 2 drinks and an appetizer we decided to leave without ever getting our food and will never go back again. Troppo is the closest we have in Lansing to my Chicago fancy that I love. The hubs and I tend to eat at the bar, where we get the best service. I love their butternut squash soup. So good! Have attempted to make it at home to no avail. For apps we will eat their white pizza, the calamari or scampi, all very good. Entrees, we have not had a bad one. Mac and cheese, pork, salmon or steak, everything turns out well. Friday is a great day to go with their drink and app specials. After dins at Troppo we always walk across the street for a cocktail at Edmunds. It's our typical Friday Night Date Night and it has not let us down yet. read more

Went there for my birthday dinner earlier this month. We both ordered Delmonicos that tasted like shoe leather. But the best part (and you will LOVE this) is our bill came to $105. My boyfriend wrote down $20 for the tip and the total as $125. He was shocked to see his Visa statement come at over $200 so he called the restaurant. Evidently, he had written the total in the tip line and the waiter helped himself to a $125 tip. Isn't that special? We won't be going back even though the manager is fixing the issue. Fairly disappointed. The hostess sat us right next to the door although there were plenty of tables open away from the door. Our entire meal was filled with gusts of cold air and wind, as well as the smell of cigarette smoke. My fiance ordered rosemary chicken which was cooked perfectly. However the only flavor of rosemary detected was the bulky stalk lying on top of the chicken. The potatoes were flavorless except for the cheese within them. I had the sea bass which my server assured me was sustainably caught. The pico on top was delicious and worked well with the blackening seasoning. The fish itself seemed as though it had been recently thawed. Very disappointing. I also ordered the roasted redskins instead of the whipped potatoes to avoid any dairy, which I also specified with the server I was unable to eat. The potatoes were cooked in butter-a lot of it. Normally I would love that, butter is flavorful, however I specified I could not have it. The bread on the tabe was also made with cheese which was not specified to me. Luckily I could not eat dairy at the time due to a doctor's request and not a true allergy or intolerance! The drinks were ok. For the price, not worth it. read more

It's not the most inexpensive place to dine, but was definitely worth it. I also had a Michigan Riesling that was amazingly tasty. This could be a very short review, Food: Wonderful Service: Horrendous but I imagine people want to hear the details. The atmosphere is like a fancy restaurant, but they have TV's showing sports so I'm not sure what they're shooting for here. We had reservations (for a birthday dinner) and were seated immediately by a friendly hostess/coat check person. It quickly went downhill. We never got bread/rolls, our appetizers came out at different times, we were served the wrong wine (red instead of white), our water glasses took forever to be refilled, and our appetizer plates were still on the table at the end of the meal. Also, our candle never got lit, even though we asked (minor detail). OK, it was a Monday night, but come on, they weren't very busy. Our waiter disappeared for long periods of time, we asked which wines were by-the-glass and he whipped a card out of his pocket and left. Later he came back to the table and picked up the card and put it back in his pocket without asking us if we wanted to order a glass (?) At the end of the meal, he came to the table and asked "Do you want coffee/tea or the check?" Not, "Would you like to see a dessert menu" and what about the birthday? Glad I made that clear when I made the reservation! Good points: the butternut squash soup, the spinach pillows appetizer, the Portobello mushroom appetizer, and the tiramisu dessert (yes, we had to ask for a dessert menu). Other orders were: Chicken Marsala, Chicken Piccata, Salmon Two Ways - all good, but not exceptional. I read the reviews beforehand, but the "birthday girl" picked the restaurant. First of all, I've eaten and Troppo countless times. The food has gotten much better and haven't had bad food here in a couple years (the food used to be super, super salty). However, this review isn't about the food. Each time I eat here deep down I hope it will be better than last time. The common theme is always the service. The service SUCKS (I wish there was a bold option on here). $98 dollar meal for 2 people with horrible service was not the way to start off my weekend. A few weeks ago when my husband and I ate here we ate on the patio. They typically do a "happy hour" menu until 6pm. When we ate here tonight I asked our waiter if there was any specials, but didn't say anything about happy hour, so I assumed it was a winter thing. That was until a table was sat next to us and started slamming martini's before 6:00 hit. I pulled their waitress over and said; "Is happy hour on the patio too? Our waiter said it was in the lounge only?" to which she replied; "Well, I try to make exceptions when I can." and walked away. I was instantly furious. Seriously....the table next to us gets 1/2 off their drinks and I don't? Not only does the waiter/waitress dictate the food and drink prices, but a glass wall is the line between happy hour prices since it separates the lounge and patio??? I guess I was unlucky tonight as I got the waiter that wasn't willing to "make exceptions." If Troppo wants to be considered fine dining in Lansing they better get their act together... read more

For a gourmet, higher priced restaurant the desserts were terrible. I ordered the Chef's Selection Chocolate Dessert Trio and received a full piece of tiramisu and a full piece of lemon cake. The portion sizes were impressive, but not what I ordered based on the menu. The tiramisu has very little flavor and may as well have come from the freezer section at Meijer. I'm not a fan of lemon, so the cake wasn't what I would have chosen. I asked our waiter if what we received was the chocolate chef's selection and he said it was... odd considering neither were chocolate. Overall it was a poor ending to a nice meal. read more

Ah, Troppo. The over all problem with Troppo is that it is not consistent. I've had excellent food at Troppo and I've had sub-standard food at Troppo. I've had excellent service at Troppo, and I've had bad service at Troppo. I've had the best martinis I've ever had at Troppo, and I've had the worst martinis I've ever had at Troppo (they used to be nothing short of sublime and now are smaller with less liquor...at average of $9 each they are now a complete rip off). I've had dessert at Troppo that rivals anything in Quebec City and I've had dessert at Troppo that smacks of Sam's Club frozen. The list goes on and on. It also appears that, as time has went on, everything has become more toward the bad end. On one occasion in October 2007, the waiter decided my 15% tip for lunch wasn't enough so he gave himself over 50% on my credit card. I wrote to management and they never responded. So, inconsistent food+rip off bad drinks+wait staff that steals+managment that does nothing about wait staff that steals+Sam's Club desserts+not exactly Big Boy prices = No thanks. Too many other places to give my dining $'s to. The butternut squash soup, however, is prize winning good. Really. But I'll have to live without it due to too many (easily 15-20) bad to mediocre experiences at easily $50 bucks a person per pop. read more

Oh Troppo, I want to love you but our relationship is just so rocky. Sometimes service and food are great; sometimes just one of those: service or food. Why can't you be consistently good with both? 6 months ago we visited and the experience was great, food on point, a few months back I stopped in over lunch to get a salad to go. It was the most abysmal salad I've ever seen, the price just made it more painful, and it was the smallest salad I've ever seen for $20. Panera would do better for 1/3 of the cost. This week it took me 1 hour 15 minutes, sitting at the bar, to get an appetizer and a bowl of $7 soup (might I suggest either you get bigger bowls or just call the to go soup what it is: a cup) and a glass of wine. The restaurant was busy but not slammed and there was plenty of wait staff around at 8 at night. The guy on the other side of the bar came in after me, ordered, and was served within minutes. I get the food home and a bite takes me to the Great Salt Lake. Potatoes inconsistently cooked and cut. To think I just paid for $25 of food. Sorry Troppo, but you'd have to make some considerable changes to make me return. I highly suggest Troppo to anyone who wants a taste of Lansing's finest mediocrity. read more

Granted I am from Boulder,Co which is foodie town all the way I was pleasantly surprised to find Troppo on my last visit to Lansing.The patio seating was lovely and and their selections on the munu were many. As far as the meal goes, we had comfort food. The pork chops and mac and cheese were great and very satisfying.The calamari had good flavor but served cold so was a little soggy. It was a beautiful evening on the patio and so i decided to order off their special summer drink menu,a mojito sounded lovely. The waittress informed me they were out of mint so I had the sangria instead which was delicious though I thought the fresh herbs,tarragon or rosmary,overpowered the fruit The strawberrie shortcake was very good and the biscuits were very flakey. Overall,it was a great evening. The biggest drawback was our waitress, nice but very unprofessional. Very uninformed and was horrible at selling special of the day or offering dessert and very unattentive compared to the other servers I observed around us. When our bread came undone and partially frozen she looked at us and said "so , it will be a while for fresh bread do you not want it?" just one example of how she communicated with us. Another was when we asked her about the strawberry shortcake she said " well we don't make the biscuits homemade but it is good". Wow! I hope that isn't how she was trained to respond to those situations. All in all I would go back next time I go visit my family again, I think it is one of the nicest restaurants there. read more

We went to Troppo to celebrate a special occasion. The restaurant was dead. The server was very bad. The descriptions of the food on the menu sounded delicious, however not all ingredients that were listed on the menu were actually on the plate when served. It seems as though anything that was expensive on the menu was missing from the plate (ex, chevre or gremalata were not served with the lamb, no grand marnier in the strawberry shortcake and no bruleed marshmallow in the marshmallow chocolate pie). The appetizers were fair, entrees were rather good, but the desserts were completely lacking, which is very disappointing when paying $9.50 per dessert. When we were served the chocolate and marshmallow pie the server just dropped it at the table and was nowhere to be found for more than 15 minutes. After not being able to find our server or the marshmallow we eventually asked another server about it. She took it from the table and came back with it saying there were no marshmallows left. Our server still had not shown up and the other server was shocked when we said we did not want it. Finally, they agreed to take it off the bill. The manager came after about 25 minutes with no server or bill. The manager was rude and condescending and hovered over is as we paid our bill and tip. He did not take our complaints seriously and offered us a business card to make up for the bad experience. No discount or even coffees off the bill, just a "call me next time, since we are the best in town, we'll make sure to hit it out of the park."
