Was in Lansing visiting a friend and we decided to have dinner at Toscana. The restaurant itself is really nice, but they sat us at a slightly awkward table. There were only four of us, but we ended up at what felt like a six-person booth/table setup. It made it a little tricky to talk with everyone, but we survived. Now listen... the bread. Oh, the bread. I have been dreaming about this bread ever since I had it. And I mean that literally, I was dreaming about the bread while I was actively eating it. It was THAT good. My pasta was delicious and had a nice kick to it. I knew it was supposed to be spicy, but even after reading the reviews I was still a little surprised by the heat. We went to Toscana (somewhat hesitantly) on Tuesday during happy hour to see our friend, Phil Denny, perform. As always, he was excellent, and I highly recommend his music. Unfortunately, our dining experience was disappointing. We weren't allowed to order from the regular happy hour menu and were limited to a much more expensive fixed menu. The calamari was good, but the featured Jazzleberry cocktail tasted weak and watered down. The prosciutto and melon appetizer was served with a large piece of half-burnt toast, the melon was hard and underripe, and the prosciutto was dry and sliced so thick it was difficult to cut or eat. I asked only for a replacement piece of toast, but our server brought an entire basket of focaccia instead. Since we hadn't ordered it, we assumed it was a courtesy replacement. We were surprised to find an $8 charge for the bread on our bill. This was at least our third disappointing experience. Toscana has a lovely atmosphere and wonderful live music, but the food quality and service have consistently fallen short. I truly hope they can improve because I'd like to enjoy dining here as much as I enjoy the entertainment. read more

I asked for a filet Instead, the brought the fattiest chunk of meat which I'd say about 75-85% of it was pure fat. the wife had Alfredo with wagu steak. she had no complaints she also had a drink (lemonchello spritz). she ate everything up. total bill $171 plus I tipped $40 so $211 for one decent meal a terrible filet and terrible wagu and a drink. After hearing many mixed reviews from friends and family we decided to try Toscana ourselves. It's located in a business and residential area so parking can be tough to find. The restaurant is open and modernly decorated. There is also outdoor seating which appears to offer fires/warmers making late summer/early fall seating pleasant. My dining companion and I opted for classic meals of veal parmigiana and scallops. The scallops were seared to perfection and flavorful, the veal was overcooked but the tomato sauce was full of flavor and tasted fresh. The recommended wine pairings were a nice accompaniment and I appreciate the waiters insight. I am thankful to have another fine dining option in the Lansing area so we will probably visit again. read more

We had the most wonderful experience at Toscana. It was our first time going to the restaurant and the service was impeccable. We started off with the calamari which was perfectly crispy white a wonderful salsa and sauce. My husband got the Tortelli which included a big slice of crispy pork belly and the mushrooms were delicious. I ordered the prawns and scallops in purgatory which had a wonderful panettone stew and polenta which juicy jumbo prawns and glistening scallops. Overall a wonderful meal. We ended the night with a trio of gelato and the peach crostada which had the right level of sweetness and amazing textures with the pistachios. Will be back again to try their brunch. read more

Going there only for dinner and the only lot that has space was $10 minimum parking. Offering bubbly or still water at $6 a bottle was pretty steep. To then find out they had tap water available. Charging for a bread basket that is normally complimentary at other locations was steep. Main courses were good but not for the price charged. My husband and I celebrated our anniversary there on the Monday after July 4th, so I imagine that's why we ended up having the whole patio to ourselves. I imagine it has a settled atmosphere even if there are more people around. It was very comfortable! The service was great - our server was very knowledgeable and had great recommendations, even after we said no seafood (which he did highly recommend), and even turned outdoor heater on for us when I got a bit chilly in the breeze. However, the most impressive part, I cannot say enough about how incredible the food was. The Asiago potato gnocchi was something my hubby and I keep coming back to when we talk about it - we knew the steak was going to be great (which it was) and the ravioli was scrumptious), but that appetizer was DELECTABLE! I only wish we were able to have eaten dessert in house. We got the tiramisu and panna cotta to go (hubby doesn't like coffee, so we got both). But it was still mouthwateringly good when we got home. We ordered a flatbread as an appetizer and got a pizza which was doubly unfortunate because it was not a good pizza. Italian restaurants should serve complimentary bread, imo. Had to pay here which strikes me as cheap. More wines by the glass would be a nice thing to add to the menu. This place may be good for a drink at the bar but we won't return for dinner. Our server Harrison was fabulous and provided great service. The manager came by (we found out he was new) and was gracious and hospitable. I'm not someone who gets hung up on visual aesthetics. Some restaurants would rather wow you with bold color schemes or thematic imagery than focus on quality food and dining experiences. I've got a special place in my heart for the hole-in-the-wall bar that nails a special burger, food courts and food trucks that offer an array of flavors and the occasional gas station that moonlights as a sandwich shop. These establishments (read lightly) know what they are and what they aren't but care enough about their customers to go the extra mile on taste and friendliness. That's not to say that I haven't indulged in some fine dining across the globe -- Michelin-starred and otherwise. Yet, even in those instances where the luxury has extended to décor and ambiance, food has been the focus. That's not always the case, and typically, I don't really care. But for special occasions, I want a multi-sensory experience that's as appealing to the eye as it is to the palate. My visits to Toscana were exactly this and more. Opened in late summer last year, Toscana has a sleek, contemporary interior that's softened by warm earth tones and lots of natural wood and light. The wine market inside sells everything you might need to host a dinner party or wine tasting at home. The variety of seating options offers something for every scenario, be it large groups, solo diners from the adjoining hotel, intimate spaces for date night or al fresco patio placement, and each offers ideal comfort with a refined touch. The staff was pleasant and smiling, with a subtle but steady presence, ready to attend to my every need. The bartenders were knowledgeable, accommodating and also suitably apologetic as they worked through some technology issues with their electronic ordering and payment systems. What's impressive The prima course I enjoyed for an early dinner ahead of an evening meeting was brilliant. Both the calamari ($16) and the pear and gorgonzola salad ($9/half) offered elevated taste profiles. The calamari were lightly battered and flash-fried, accompanied by cherry peppers, giardiniera and a delightfully tangy anchovy salsa verde. The lengthwise cut of the squid was a welcome departure from the typical rings, and the plating was artistic and generously sauced. Similarly, the salad was wonderfully dressed in a fig-balsamic vinaigrette. The peppery arugula paired well with the gorgonzola and maple-roasted pecans. My only complaint was the miserly portions of the prosecco-roasted pears: Two thin slices are not substantial enough for you as a reader, let alone this writer gripping his fork in anticipation. What's surprising My lovely bride joined me for a brunch date to celebrate 14 years of wedded bliss. She noshed on a Caprese salad ($18). Although a buffalo mozzarella first-timer, she's now an avid fan. The yellow heirloom tomatoes, partnered with the basil pesto and balsamic reduction, were delightful, particularly with the extra serving of balsamic goodness snuggled up on the side. The cab omelet ($18), stuffed with lump crab meat, basil and goat cheese, was outstanding. The perfectly cooked three-egg omelet was a wonderful platform for the tart and creamy seafood mixture. Thinly sliced Lyonnaise potatoes flanked the omelet and were somehow simultaneously translucent to the eye but thick to the bite. We split the Toscana Stack ($15), which was both an eyeful and a mouthful. The faintly yellow pancakes were fluffy, with a hint of sweetness from the vanilla cream and a tiny punch of citrus from the lemon zest. The generous blanket of berries was a hybrid of fresh, whole fruit pieces and mashed compote. Michigan-made maple syrup brought this dish from the garden back into grandma's kitchen --griddled cakes at their best. Best bite The chicken marsala ($32) was top-flight. I recall my mom having perfected a version of this dish in my youth; Toscana's version rivaled hers, but if any of you tell her, I'll deny ever writing this. The two thick cuts of chicken, bathed in a rich and creamy mushroom and wine sauce, were succulent and divine. They were served over a mound of Parmesan mashed potatoes and accompanied by fresh asparagus and crispy pancetta. This was high-level Italian cooking using fresh ingredients without trying to reinvent the meal. Flavor is my favorite aesthetic. read more

This place is in a hotel and at first was a bit tricky to see from the road We were greeted warmly by all the staff, and the waiter was top notch. It is a beautiful place with the most comfortable chairs ever. Like a warm hug! We found out that it was only a small brunch menu, but it looked yummy so no issue. We both ordered wagyu short rib eggs Benedict with potatoes. The food came quickly but it was barely lukewarm. The potatoes were delicious but cool. The ciabatta under our main dish seemed like it was toasted yesterday, and the short rib was hard to locate. Eggs and sauce were good. I got an iced tea that was so weak it resembled dish water. The quality of food, service, personalized touches and attention to detail really made this a 5 star dining experience. We attended the VIP Grand Opening last month and one of the cocktails I LOVED, was the cocktail of the evening and renamed after me. So sweet! Our server Elliott, was personable, attentive and hilarious! Stephanie was another that really just blew us away. Please send them, and the chef my highest compliments for going above and beyond to take care of me and some of my favorite people. In town for work and decided to check it out. Ambiance: nice design but it was less than half filled and every conversation in the restaurant created far more noise than it should have. Not sure if it was the ceiling height, open concept, or wall treatment but don't come for a quiet date or business conversation. It's loud here. Drinks: To the manager and other bartender, thank you for making our drinks right as the first drink that came to our table wasn't what we ordered. We sent it back. This seemed to make the other bartender annoyed (from the face we saw given to our attentive waitress for returning them). The corrected beverages - a standard drink on any bar menu was correct. Share Apps - flat bread had a nice balance of flavor and just enough salt to lift without over powering. Mains - this is where things fell flat and at a very high price point, flat doesn't cut it. The steak filet dressed with what felt like crispy onions you could buy at the grocery might have added some texture to the plate but took away from the streak. If sides are going to be extra that's fine. So don't muck up a good steak with handful of onion crisps. The spaghetti was cold, overly starchy, and far too heavy handed with chili oil. All that was left on our tongues was heat and starch and the meatballs were cold. Another pasta dish we had at the table was bland and lacking in flavor. The third dish at our table - the Alfredo dish, which I tried, had nice flavor but arrived cold. And the service staff who brought the dishes to our table got every plate location wrong. The waitress was trying her best to correct their mistakes. It seems they still haven't learned the table positions. At this price point one expects a stronger showing than a chain restaurant. So exciting to have a new restaurant in town! This place has a lot of potential to be one of the staples in the area. We were here on its opening week so we get that there're still some grand-opening hiccups that if sorted carefully, will no doubt put this Italian restaurant on the map for many including me. Ambiance 5/5 First of all, the location and ambience got my high mark! As a part of the hotel, both outdoor and indoor decor are stunning-- bright natural light, clean, minimalist modern seatings. Mild flavorings, didn't see any nduja in there but it could just be a paste, gremolata was forward, giving a refreshing taste, no bad mussels 4/5 Salad: Caprese --excellent dish. The heirloom tomatoes are flavorful. Delicious pesto, Recommend! 5/5 We opted for the rack of lamb($45) with a side of risotto for the main-- now I'm aware of the inflation but when I think of rack of lamb I'd imagine at minimal 5-6 ribs. This dish came with 4 very small (1.25 in) lamb pops on top of too much ratatouille/tomatoes/demi glace. Now, the lamb is of great quality and the flavor is on point. It was over cooked (we asked for med-rare, came med-midwell). The amount of accompaniment and its strong sweet/acidic flavor was tbh too much and didn't completely go with the lamb, it needed some starch which when added a side risotto, it worked. The risotto was standard for the area, el dente but a bit too thick 3/5. Dessert-- panna cotta --more like panna roccia lol. So again, chalking it up to a first week hiccup, because this is just no good. 0/5 Too much gelatin so the pudding is super hard. The manager seemed to acknowledge it well so I'm sure they'll be able to improve on their recipe. All in all we'd not hesitate to return and try other items. We might have pulled the trigger too quickly to show up right on its first week. It has loads of potentials and we only wish the best for this new establishment. Food was fantastic we have Charcuterie board, Burrata Prosciutto Di Parma and Nonna's meatballs to start! Both the Charcuterie and Burrata were both light and robust in flavor! Very unique and enjoyable! I tasted the Waygu and New York Strip but my heart and belly holds the rack a lamb in highest regard. Ate the bit to myself with rack of lamb. So out of the three choose the lamb. Service is new so they are working through opening! Shout out to Elliot their Sommelier on the floor who is an amazing person and very helpful! Make sure to ask for him and his expertise on wine so he can bring you the best match for food! The place holds special place as from a construction side I managed building the interior. Seemed like quality ingredients were used but ruined by a subpar recipe and prep. Biscuits were dense and tough. Gravy lacked flavor when it should have been packed with flavor and consistency was off. Eggs were over fried and too crusty. Left majority of my entree uneaten - instead ate rest of the bread pudding app, which was perfectly balanced with a pistachio cream that had a great depth of flavor and consistency! The pasta resembled ramen noodles, there was not enough sauce, the guanciale was not fresh and was dry. The service was amazing. The staff are very attentive to your every need. The decor and ambiance are first class. Where the Toscana falls short is in its execution of their food. We ordered the calamari ($14) as an appetizer which was excellent but the main course of lobster linguine ($52) and filet ($44) fell short of our expectations! The lobster linguine needed some more depth of flavor. The filet was supposed to be medium rare but the edges were more like medium to medium well. The steaks do not come with sides and those have to be ordered a la carte. I was disappointed and had hoped for better. Perhaps it was an off night. read more
