The worst service The most disgusting food My best friend worked there for a long time and described so many things about the place that makes it a horror for anyone attending. She described food that was prepared worse than the food she used to prep in our college cafeteria - in fact she would eat cafeteria food 100 times before she'd even consider Troppo food She described the worst management in particular some stinky moron named Jason (spare one guy who's not even there anymore) She described a building that was put together by a bunch of monkeys, wall paper falling off the wall, floods, broken molding Also she told us that the management steals money from the servers outright during their checkouts, refuses to pay for events, and is extremely shady on paychecks So after all of this I had to go and try the place out just to find out if the worst restaurant conceivable could really be true - It was and worse. The menu looks like it could have been better written by a 15 year old with a crayon, cheap paper, boring menu items, some stuffed pork chop item that reminds me of the worst menu item of the worst 80's restaurant. There wasn't a hostess and when someone came up to great us she seemed scared out of her mind that she was about to be fired The table was filthy, the floor was gross, the menu was dirty, and there was a hair under my b&b The waiter did a decent job but when we got him to confess what he truly thought the best food was he chucked as if to say "I'd rather eat my own feet" The calamari app was the number one starter apparently so we went with that WHAT THE HECK! It wasn't even squid, it was some mashed up goop that could have possibly come from a rancid squid but had the texture of something foul and inedible. The junk that came on the plate tasted free dried and in no way fit the dish. People that truly believe this is the number one app must have only eaten at Burger King and McDonalds prior. We had to wait 15 minutes for the one of the worst drinks I've ever had. The waiter said the drinks used to be better but the ingredients have always been horrible. Then I decided to pick out a bottle because you can't screw that up. Being a wine rep I know the prices of most of the wines my company carries and this caused the final straw to break. They mark up their wine 3-4 times the price!!!! That's offensive. Absolutely disgusting. Not to mention the wines weren't even categorized right. This place reeks of big name no creativity wine. Every wine I saw looked like the cheesy "wine spectator" picks for 2005. If you want to go to a cookie cutter chain (yet it's not a chain) no effort restaurant that hates you just as much as it hates its staff - go to Troppo, otherwise eat your feet. read more

Sadly, while the food was very good, the service ruins this restaurant. We made a reservation for 4 people for Feb 13, day before Valentine's Day about 2 weeks ahead, but we were not told that it would be a price fixe menu. In fact we were not told that until we asked our server. But first, we had to wait to be seated, both hostesses were fawning over some people that were coming in at the same time as we were while we stood there unacknowledged. When we got seated, those people, party of 8, were right near us. While we sat and waited, they got water and were ordering drinks, no server had even said hello to us. I asked a passing server to see if someone would come to see us and very quickly our server showed up with water and took drink orders. I asked if there was a cocktail menu, she said there was but with that tone of "oh but don't make me go get it" We never had the cocktail menu or wine list. The party of 8 and one other table was given a bread and butter basket, we didn't get that. The food came, it's was good but my chicken had a bloody leg. One of the hostesses and a guy who may be the manager were walking by, I said, 'excuse me' the hostess looked at me like "why would you speak to me". The man was nice he took my chicken back, quickly brought back a different one, but started in with an excuse about how chicken can have veins and sometimes....what!? I've cooked chicken, I know how chicken is, don't try telling me it really was cooked...sure some parts were cooked, that leg wasn't. Bottom line...This restaurant is off my list of places to go in Lansing. Food was good but overpriced and the service is bad. read more

These previous 1 and 2 star reviews are not to be trusted. I brought a 1st date here and before sitting at the table that I reserved we started at the bar. We both ordered the Bellini martini (I let her pick). The drink was delicious and strong. Check out the website for their food and drink menu. The list is extensive. The atmosphere is perfect for a romantic date. Once seated at our table, my date and I split the Calamari appetizer and it took about 7 minutes to come out. This dish was both sweet and spicy. It was superb. By that time we had finished our martinis our entrees were almost ready. We then ordered a bottle of wine. They had a special and the bottle was only $20! I forget the name of the white wine that we ordered, but there was a large list to choose from. For the entree, I ordered the Blackened Sea Bass while my date ordered the house special which was a huge piece of salmon wrapped in bacon. Both dishes come with a vegetable and mashed potatoes. All of this was perfectly seasoned and cooked. A+ to the chef. The service was excellent as the waitress came by every 5-10 minutes to make sure our glasses were full (we each had a glass of water along with the wine) and to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. A+ to the waitstaff. Personally, I loved the king size chairs they use at the 2 person tables. They had a small pillow (decorative, but useful) on each and it made for a very relaxing night. EXCELLENT ! SUPERB ! OUTSTANDING ! GREAT ATMOSPHERE ! Those are just a few words to describe my dining experiences at Troppo every time I've been there. EVERY TIME. And I've been there often. The menu is full of great main dish choices, the appetizers are fantastic (especially the Calamari), the squash soup is to die for, and the general atmosphere is sheik, tasteful, and convincing of fine dining. The Staff is knowledgeable in wine selection, are attentive (but not at your table every 2 minutes either...which can be annoying), are friendly, and the bar tenders can make one heck of a "French Martini". If you've never had a French Martini, do yourself a favor and try one. You'll love it ! I read nearly all of the reviews for Troppo, and I must disagree with the negative postings. ANY RESTAURANT...regardless of how they rate by professional food critics or by word of mouth...is going to have a bad day from time to time, just like any of us. Most of the negative reviews I read were from people who only dined there once and had a bad experience. How many of us have dined at Taco Bell, McDonalds or Denny's and had a bad experience...but yet went back again later? You must give Troppo another shot ! I promise you'll be very pleased. When you go back, be sure to tell the manager about your first experience...good, bad, or otherwise...and I'll bet he/she will do everything in their power to make sure you walk out happy, and willing to recommend Troppo to your friends. read more

The food has never been good here. The management changes monthly it seems because the same guy has never "touched" our table. The staff looks miserable. The food matches the atmosphere. It's hard to even get a reservation there because they ask too many questions and have too much of a routine. We had the squash soup because everyone raves about it - it doesn't taste like squash at all, in fact it was gross. The server suggested the stuffed pork chop - it reminds me of something my five year old would make that I would slowly take a bite out of and choke down trying to smile so I don't hurt her feelings. It was gross gross gross. The dessert wasn't bad. I asked if they make their desserts and found out that they don't really make much of their food. The only saving grace was that we had a decent time there, we recognized some of our friends and we made fun of the place with them. Over the last few months, I have hired Troppos for four (4) separate events. At each event Everyone has raved over their food and service. And most have, not -only said it once, but reiterated, how much they loved the food, to ensure I received the message. Additionally, the presentation of food is always beautiful, and even in a warehouse, Troppos can make it look, first class. Stopping in for lunch- the staff is always busy seating patrons, and there are lunch meetings under-going at nearly every table. (My favorite is the squash soup). To top great food and service, the owners have a passion for our community. We are fortunate to have Troppos located in Lansing, as they provide both an excellent product and service, and a passion for our community. Troppo has a bad rep both in food and service. In fact, I even get blamed for a lot of the bad reviews as if I wanted to bad mouth myself as much as others. But I want to set it straight: Troppo is a good restaurant, they're not trying to be the best and they're certainly not trying to be the worst. The thing that Troppo has that no other restaurant downtown is white table clothes on the table, private rooms, and a banquet floor. It's a monumental thing to have in the downtown Lansing area because there are mostly chain restaurants or casual lunch places to go to by yourself (not with a client). I know many people that work there and they do well for themselves. Troppo is exactly what it wants to be and it executes it quite well. read more

What ever happened to common sense and courtesy requirements when hiring people. This restaurant needs to revisit how to make customers feel welcome. Had a meal here a few nights ago and it wasn't good... it was great! My girlfriend and I were so pleased with our service and food. I highly recommend the calamari or Brussel sprout appetizers. Steak was cooked to perfection and our server Joey couldn't have been better. All in all a terrific experience. It's rare being this happy with restaurant service these days, but when all the employees greet you with a smile and the chef asks you how your meal was, how can not be wowed by that service!? read more

We came here on a date last week, everything was outstanding. We had a few glasses of wine with dinner which all came together great! She had the Shrimp and Scallops and I had the Filet. We enjoyed two wonderful visits here and will be going back again soon. The service we received was top-notch and the food was fantastic. The most impressive part was our server remembered our guest's drink recipe exactly from the first visit and recited it back to him. The peasant's pasta was amazing and the environment is warm and inviting. Previous reviewers commented on the service being very slow which was true. We went on a Sunday night and there was only 3 tables with people in the entire restaurant and we were still there for almost 2 hours. Our server was very good and nice, just a little slow. No worse restaurant in the area. Just because you charge a lot and have a good looking building (by Lansing standards) doesn't mean the food is acceptable. My roommate works there. Went here for Graduation weekend against the warnings of my friends and family in Lansing. The poor reputation was accentuated when we ate there.
