I like my dentist. Everyone there is very thorough, patient, and they explain everything well. The atmosphere is always welcoming I'm put you at ease if you are nervous. Now I don't know how they are if you are one of those people who are getting very nervous at the dentist, has I am not scared of needles in my mouth. Parking is always easy. You can either parked in their own parking lot or on the street. Dr. Portash is by far the best dentist I have been to. after a HORRIBLE dentist experience, i consulted yelp reviews of dentists. made some calls to get an idea of prices and also friendliness of staff and went with Dr. Portash. it also helped that his office is 7 blocks from my house in case dental operations meant that i would be unable to drive. he is everything you would ever want in a dentist- nice, friendly, intuitive, intelligent, understanding, non-judgmental, easy on the hands, explains everything he will do, and there is just something extremely soothing about him- like if he had some extra time he could do some seriously quality psycho analysis and possibly diagnose my tendency to date needy men, advise me in how to more accurately avoid carbs and learn to be more patient with those on bicycles who clearly are clueless during my first consultation with him, he was able (unlike that horrid dentist i reviewed) to give me an accurate idea of my cavity situation. i only needed one, thank fuck, for now, unlike the 7 or 8 the dentist i refer to as the evil witch said i immediately needed. yesterday was teh filling day. i had forgotten and had to go immediately from lincoln city after 64 hours of serious drinking at a beach house, an incident involving the police and fireworks and within hours of the appt, an experience with something called a mcdonalds mcgriddle that i woudl not want to repeat. none of the staff commented on what must have been a highly unpleasant odor coming from my entirety. it was the fastest and least painful filling i can recall having. moreso, the entire staff seem to be as cool, nice and understanding as teh dr. while i have never been to the same hair stylist twice due to various reasons, dr portash will be my dentist as long as i live in oregon. and if necessary, if i leave, he will be my annual visit dentist. if you need a dentist, fo realsies, i could not imagine any other dentist even having half the skills of dr. portash. read more

Now that I'm striking out on my own, I needed a new dentist, since my former dentist is 2,500 miles away. I'm so lucky to have found Dr Portash on Yelp, because he is a great dentist! I don't have any special tooth problems (unless floss amnesia is a problem?), so I don't know how good he is with special tooth problems, but he is great with basic tooth maintenance! The staff is friendly and helpful with getting my insurance info sorted out; the hygienist was very thorough but gentle and didn't nag too much about my need to floss; and Dr Portash is just about the friendliest dentist. He seems to really enjoy peering into mouths all day! And I appreciate how he makes conversation, but waits for you to answer before poking about in your mouth. After my cleaning my mouth and teeth felt super nice. Very smooth! I think they felt the cleanest they ever have. And they didn't push fluoride or lots of other extra treatments- just flossing! read more

Due to some less than stellar dental maintenance in my childhood and some crappy genes, I have had a tad of experience in a dental chair. I have had crowns, root canals, root planings, extractions, Implants, overlays, more fillings that I can remember and probably some other things I have just plain forgotten. Troy is the best dentist I have ever had, and there have been many poking around in there! He and his staff have a non-judgemental compassion for his patients and his work that is rare in health care professionals these days. On my first visit, after a few years of me living in dental denial, we were able to put a plan together to attack the current slew of problems. We have attacked the plan based on what is best for me financially, cosmetically and medically. He really treats you as a friend and a human being and not just another set of symptoms. I have had a LOT of experience in the dentist's chair. I have genetically terrible teeth, and even though I diligently brush and floss, I had nothing but problems until pretty much every back tooth was filled. I have what they call a "special needs" mouth - it's always something with these teeth, no matter how diligent I am. Having only ever had dentists on a scale from terrible to the low side of mediocre, I really never understood what people meant when they said they had a "great dentist". When I moved to Portland, I made an appointment with Dr. Portash on the recommendation of my roommate (and I was lucky to be able to get in, since he was only taking new patients based on referral at that point), and all that changed. I could not be happier with this dental office. I have never been afraid of the dentist, but I've always felt a little anxious, not knowing what to expect, but I am never concerned in the least with this office. On my first visit, the hygienist seriously spent 25 minutes painstakingly scraping the red wine stains off my teeth by hand - they had never looked so white (and it doesn't take nearly as long now that they are being cleaned properly twice a year). I've had everything from a cleaning to a crown here, and it's all been easy, painless, and even pretty fast. They also know what they can handle - when I needed a root canal that looked particularly difficult on my strange molar (which had 2 more roots than a normal molar), they referred me to an equally awesome endodontist. Dr. Portash was also the first dentist to tell me what I've suspected for years - that I need braces to correct my bite. I had asked many dentists in the past and they brushed me off because my teeth look nice and it's not a cosmetic issue. With no prompting from me, Dr. Portash took one look at my teeth and was able to explain to me exactly what the problem was, and how it had affected my dental health in the past. The best thing is, this office will NOT do extra work you don't need just to make money. Every time I go in I expect them to tell me that some of my 20+ year old fillings need to be replaced, and every time Dr. Portash does a thorough exam and discusses it with me, never pressuring me to replace them before they need it. I know they will all need to go soon, but I appreciate him giving me the honest lowdown so I understand when it's really necessary and when it's just a waste of money. The staff is all very nice and professional, and they will accommodate schedule changes whenever possible. Just schedule early if you can - those 8am appointments go quick! read more

I never thought I'd feel compelled to write a review about a dentist, but okay. Dr. Portash and staff are exceptional. I'm one of the many who blanch at even the thought of the dentist and faint at the idea of what's involved with "deep cleaning," but this place eased my fears. This is the first office where, not only did I not have to sign in, but they actually greeted me by name when I walked in for the first time(s). The aforementioned deep cleaning ended up not being painful at all, which was definitely a change from previous dentists. Because of said fears, I hadn't been to the dentist in four years, and thus has two fillings to get, and they were very helpful suggesting which ones might be best for me. This place is top notch and Dr Portash is simply the best. He explains everything so well. I was referred to him by a friend after my Kaiser coverage was made obsolete about four years ago. The staff - especially Brittany at the front desk - are always so helpful. When I first started going here I asked about some yellowing around some of my teeth and the doctor explained they were just old filling material that could easily be replaced. My dentist(s) at Kaiser never offered that at all. (Like a production line there). If you are looking for a dentist, this should be the one. The dentists I endured throughout my formative years left me downright damaged--reeling and fearful. My previous dental experience was a nightmare, so I was pretty nervous to try out someone new, but a friend from work recommended Dr. Portash so I decided to give him a try. I don't think my experience could have been any better. His staff was nice, they were quick with the x-rays and kept the appointment moving along. I got my teeth polished and didn't get an earful about how flossing me teeth three times a week was inadequate. They were completely realistic in there expectations and for once I received compliments about the condition of my smile rather than having someone nit pick about all the things I should be doing better. Just had the best dental experience of my life---after breaking off a chunk of my back molar while eating lunch on a Friday afternoon. "The dentist will be out of the office until Tuesday," said the sweet-sounding recorded voice on the other end of the line when I called the office. OK, so this is a new dentist for me. I have an appointment for a cleaning in a month, but we've yet to meet. I take a chance and call the emergency number and imagine this---Dr. Portash answers on the first ring. He's kind and reassuring and says he'll meet me at the office in 45 minutes . . . on his day off! I'm shocked and relieved and grateful! He's right on time, wife and son in tow, and they are all incredibly gracious. He repairs the broken tooth (painlessly), takes his time explaining the more permanent solutions that I can choose from down the road, and sends me on my way---get this---free of charge! I was stunned. He's just gotten himself a patient for life---along with all the family and friends I will quickly convert. After a lot of reviewing I decided to give this dentist a chance.I have extreme anxiety when it comes to going to see a dentist. Dr.Portash and his whole staff went above and beyond to make sure that I was well informed and taken care of. Their office is easy to find with free of street parking. The office is nice and clean. I was seen at my actual time of my appointment, rather than sitting there for an extra half hour like most offices. I got to see Trish for my hygenist. She was gentle and informative and kind.Brittany was the office clerk that showed me great patience over the phone and at the office, as well as making other appointments for me to a specialist and calling my insurance company for me..... all with a smile. Dr.Portash himself is neither too young or too old and spoke to me like a normal human being and was informative and sensitive to my anxiety and financial issues. The staff is great - from the front office to the hygienists - all are friendly, upbeat, very skilled, and always on time. And then there's Dr Portash - the key to the whole place. I wish i could say that I had a great experience. Being new to town, I used the nice Yelp Reviews and scheduled my first appointment with Dr. Portash. What a waste of time. To be fair, I never met him but I suspect he heard the conversation I had. I filled out the paper work and was called in right away. The hygentist sat me down, she seemed nice and asked me about my history, etc. Remember, this is first time here so questions should be allowed and welcomed. She wanted to do full x-rays and I expressed apprehension b/c I always feel like I am getting dental x-rays and asked her to explain why, how often, etc. Anyhow - she did explain and then said but you know...'we won't have time to clean your teeth today", ' we only have 30 minutes left and b/c of the paper work which took 4 minutes we don't have time. What? I took off work this afternoon for the appointment. She said usually new patients are scheduled for 1.5 to 2 hours - mine was for 1 hour. I was so disappointed for the time wasted, etc. They weren't overly accomodating and acted like it was no big deal, just come back. This appointment took 2 months to schedule.
