They have a sign stating "No PUBLIC Restrooms,, (implying paying customers could), after sitting down and spending $50 on coffee and pastries, I politely asked to use the restroom as a paying customer. The owner flat-out said no with extreme rudness. When I reminded him that I was a paying patron, and his reply could have been more settle he took off his glasses, stepped up aggressively, and snapped, "NO Restroom!", When I told him his behavior was uncalled for, he had the nerve to claim I was the rude one for mentioning how much money I had just spent. I went here a few years ago and enjoyed the Turkish delights and coffee here. I decided to bring my family here again today. The Turkish delights are overpriced but they are very good. The service this time was not great. We were ignored for the most part. I waited behind the person who was checking out. Once the guy was done, I got to the front of the cash register but the lady ignored me by backing away and not looking at me. I'm used to paying the same amount for much more baklava so the sweet treats didn't interest me that much here but there are a lot to choose from. We were here for the Turkish coffee which I had before, maybe with more milk/cream because the creamy coffees ($6) here were sour and bitter. The creamy cardamom to me was just nasty, like herbal medicine. He enjoyed his creamy hazelnut which didn't taste that much better to me. So this is definitely a tourist trap. Do you like traps? Up to you right? I did get some samples. And the samples were good enough for me to spend $25. So the little square cubes of plain Turkish Delights were quite delish. It's quite quite the soft chewy gooey texture. It's a bit more thick and richer than other cheap ones where the texture feels more gummy or gelatinous. When I inquired about the ingredients, they said that they used molasses. I see why and how Edmund fell to Turkish Delights. I also got the other more fancy TDs that had other ingredients including pomegranate and marshmallows (separate, not together). They also served Turkish coffees with fancy cups. I should have gotten it. But I didn't. Maybe it's bc I knew this was a tourist trap and I was only willing to be trapped by the TDs like Edmund. But there were others including Turks whom patron the coffee. My friend commented that this place was more expensive than another Turkish store. But it is what it is. And you get what you get. I've been coming here for years, at least once a year, and Troya is still my must-stop spot for Turkish delights and coffee. The lokum are excellent -- the green pistachio roll and the dark cocoa/black roll are absolute classics. Other newer flavors are fun too, but those two are my staples. The owner is generous with samples -- not tiny bites, but big pieces -- so you can really taste before you buy. Even though I'm not big on sweets, I always end up leaving with a box (or two) to enjoy slowly at home. The Turkish coffee here is the highlight. I usually brew mine with Najjar Green using a traditional cezve, bringing it up and down three times to get the proper thickness and cardamom punch. Too many cafes only do one boil, which makes it thin and flat. Here, the coffee is rich, aromatic, and full-bodied -- just like how my Middle Eastern friends make it at home. I've never been to the Middle East myself, but stepping into this shop -- with the lamps, colors, and atmosphere -- really feels like being transported there. Hands down, the best Turkish coffee I've had in the Bay Area. I picked up a variety of baklava, which turned out to be excellent once I got home. However, I was drawn into the café entirely by the aroma coming from the sidewalk. It was strong and inviting, but not what I expected from a pastry shop, which made me curious enough to step inside. The space features a selection of Turkish treats, along with hand-painted pottery and colorful bowls. I asked about the fragrance and was directed to their essential oil section, where the staff explained how to recreate the scent at home. I placed a few drops of oil into a hydro diffuser and the fragrance in my home is LOVELY! I can't say enough about this cafe. The staff was friendly and very welcoming. I only had Turkish delight one other time in Carmel and did not like the rose flavored candy but I decided to try the rose flavored Turkish delight they had here - I enjoyed it so much more !! Drawn inside by the beautiful Turkish lights and decor, we stayed because of the tasty Turkish pastries and coffee! After having several complimentary tastings, we HAD to buy some. We got our 3 favorites: one had roses, one had pistachios and blackberry, one had coconut and fig. They are sold by the pound, and we got 3 "quarter pounds", but somehow it ended up being a pound of food ($36). This is an almost perfect cafe, with the only "ding" being the inconsistent service. There were 2 men (one older gentleman who was delightful and friendly, one younger man who helped us in the beginning) and one younger woman who refused to help us when we asked for a napkin and later asked for a bag. It was unfortunate to have been met by someone rude in a service industry but we didn't let it ruin our short coffee outing. You know, sometimes when a place is on, say, Cannery Row, they throw some substandard treats your way, because they know you're not going to be a repeat customer, and they might even treat you with a barely disguised disdain (and having been in customer service, I can't say I blame them if they do). But Troya does not do this. In fact, it is obvious that the people who run and work in this store have higher standards for service, food, and ambiance. The bakery has this lovely atmosphere that makes you want to hang out for a while, because it feels like you're in a jewelry box. On your left, there are evil eye teacups and other goods, and on your right, a wonderful array of sweet treats, and the shop feels like you stepped into a place that cares. The staff, too, is friendly and warm and represent the shop so well--no small feat in a tourist town. For a while, I lived outside Detroit, the largest diaspora of Middle Eastern folks, and I got spoiled on baklava there. Ever since, I've tried to find an equivalent, and Troya is realllllllyyyy close, like, within millimeters of being close. My pistachio baklava had that texture of flakiness on the top and almost like a bench of honey on the bottom, where your teeth can just sink in. I cannot wait to go back here. Whenever I go to Monterey this is my first stop. I love this dessert spot and their Browni Chocolate Hazelnut Turkish Delight is to die for (if you're a chocolate and hazelnut lover)! I got 4 lbs and got a pound of my flavor of choice for free. The older gentleman helping me gave me some free samples that were delightful and he was very efficient packing my order and getting me in and out; they are always busy.
