Gem in downtown Monterey just a couple of blocks from Alvarado Street. We got the London Fog tea and a cafe latte with vanilla & lavender, both made with oat milk. Our drinks were delicious and perfectly made with just the right amount of flavors, not too sweet, the right hot temperature. We ordered medium sized drinks which were a generous 15 ounce serving. Reasonable prices, clean place with lots of comfortable inside (there are about 3 rooms you can sit in) and an outdoor front patio. They also have baked goods, and other foods (quiche, sandwiches, etc). Very glad to find this cafe. We will be back. read more

Found this place online and wanted to try a local coffee/tea place. We were greeted by a gentleman that was happy and very accommodating. The place is an old building of some kind so it has several rooms with various seating arrangements. Locals seem to meet up here to discuss everything from interviews to sorting out non profits. The tea and coffee were nothing special, my tea bag was Rishi bag and my friend said his coffee was ok. It was a local atmosphere but I do not think we will visit again when we are in the area. read more

I had the hot mocha latte with almond milk. I typically like my coffee and drinks more on the bitter side so I was pleased surprised when I tasted it and it was more bitter than sweet. I think of Mocha as sweet so I'm very happy that it was how I like my drinks. I would 100% come again and I recommend everyone to try their hot mocha latte!! read more

Stumbled upon this cafe on the way to the aquarium and found this hidden gem. Such a unique cafe with lots of options to choose from. We got a hot vanilla latte with oat milk, an iced hazelnut latte with 2%, and a blue berry muffin that they warmed up for us. Everything was so delicious with along with a short wait time. I wanted to like this place and had high hopes but unfortunately it fell short. The coffee was fine, the food was okay (the burrito wasn't the best, but the quiche was pretty good!) the staff was kind but the atmosphere was weird and un appealing. The pictures show it, but we sat next to like a giant pile of old boxes full of random stuff. It seemed a little dirty too. Things just get really out of place here. I'll be back to try again for a redemption review. read more

Visiting Monterey for the weekend and had been frequenting Captain + Stoker for my coffee. Decided to try something different and really enjoyed this place. The latte was nice and strong and the coffee cake was nice too. I think I still prefer Captain+Stoker coffee, but this is definitely a good option. Really spacious with lots of seating as well. Reading some of the negative reviews here makes me think some people caught then on an off day or something. read more

Such a cute vibe inside. almost gives a castle feel. The service was pretty standard as it is with most cafes. No problems but also nothing amazing. Lovely cafe! Quick, good service, great ambiance, and tasty pastries and coffee! This place is a vibe and I love all of the decor! We didn't try any of the hot food like their burritos so I can't say if they're good but the New York crumb cake was just what I expected, simple, not too sweet, and moist! It went perfectly with my caramel macchiato which was piping hot, not too milky nor too sweet! We'll be back! Overall, very solid cafe and great spot to grab a small bite and beverage! read more

This is our favorite local spot in Monterey. The coffee is tasty and I normally get the Matcha with oat milk. The owner, Ryan is extremely nice and attentive and has become a friend of ours. He really takes care of his customers and make them feel at home. The café has an authentic feel. It's cozy limited seating options if it's busy, but there are outdoor seating as well. read more

I've visited East Village Cafe a couple of times and it's always a great experience. The owner, Ryan and his team are very friendly and professional. The cafe itself inviting and has a historic Carmel stone chalkrock interior. There are many different rooms with plenty of seating options. The shop also has some light bites and pastry items! Vacation in Monterey is allowing me to try different coffee places. When I lived here, it was different. East Village is so cool! Arrived early and was welcomed immediately upon entering. Ordered a brown sugar cinnamon latte. They come with two shots. And a drip coffee, the medium roast. Super cool vibes. Different rooms to chill and enjoy your treats. I got a day old treat for $1.00! Dipped in coffee the perfect accompaniment to coffee. They did have incense burning at the doorway. Sort of overwhelming scent, but fits the vibe of the place. A great little coffee shop. They sell food too but I just satisfied my sweet tooth this morning. Enjoy life and treat yourself! SYOY. read more

While in town I ordered a large toffee breve latte. The baristo informed me of how many shots of espresso would go in a large latte. I appreciated that. He also asked me to taste my drink and confirm it was made correctly before leaving. The shop is nice inside with lots of community members seated around visiting. Love love love the ambiance that this place exhibits! The stoned brick wall definitely adds character and makes it unique. Workers are very friendly when I visited during the afternoon on Friday. We wanted to grab a pick-me-up and I was drawn to the flavors they had that you don't usually see at most coffee shops. My friend had ordered a Pistachio Latte while I chose to try their Raspberry iced latte. I would never forget the faces my friend and I made to each other: confused and thrown off but in the best way possible. We weren't expecting a burst of the flavors we ordered at all! Usually, all lattes have that same overpowering flavor no matter what type you get, but theirs is definitely something that you could distinguish. A great place to have a little coffee hang out or date at. Heads up though!!! They do not have wi-fi, so it's not the most ideal place to work or do a group study at. read more

It was great! Not sure what to make of the poor reviews; I guess this is highly server-dependent so someone else's bad day is very consequential. It was fine when I was here. Calm, pleasant, very good quiche and fancy latte of some sort too. Lots of money but I understand around here that's par or in fact, way above (as in relatively cheap). It was fun, it was fine, it was filling. I am happy as a traveler to have found myself here. It's clear there in fact are some, dare I say many locals here. I'm sure if you are actually local you can make your own coffee for less but their baked goods were a fine option for something hard to do yourself. I appreciate the place and recommend it highly. One star down only because it wasn't the-best-ever-amazing but it was great. read more

This spot is definitely a hidden gem! The vibes were so cute and I loved the decor! I ordered the chocolate croissant, tiramisu, and lychee juice. I loved how the menu had the cafe classics but also unique items like lychee juice. The croissant was perfect! It wasn't too flaky and had just enough chocolate chunks. The tiramisu was delicious and the lychee juice was very sweet, but just how I would want it. Definitely recommend this spot! read more

Whenever we are on vacation, we are always on the lookout for whoever has the BEST coffee and Chai tea latte (my husband's favorite). As my husband walks in he wants me that the drinks are not sweet because I think it's authentic. I took a sip And it definitely tasted like the chai was strained BUT our drinks tasted super watery. Combo that with oat milk and it was sadly a disappointment. I know Pete's coffee does the same but in my opinion, their chai has a lot more flavor. Amazing vanilla lavender lattes! It was my first time in Monterey (I'm from the bay area) and we decided to stop at this cafe yesterday. The courtyard is welcoming and I love the unique rustic look of this cafe indoors, almost an Asian design. The owner mentioned the Nepali influence. Very zen place to chill and relax. This was a hidden gem that my wife found out to grab our morning coffee. We drove drove and ended up here as per the parking available nearby and we are glad we found this place. A cute little cafe that is well made from the interior with plenty of seating (kind of hideout) rooms and alleys. Indian culture-based decor and staff are super nice. We even had a good time with a few local people who came for getting their morning coffee there. Coming to the food - we tried 2 coffee and 3 breakfast food, and everything was very good. No complaints at all. I would highly recommend this place for the ambiance and the coffee. Prices are very reasonable too. read more

There are a half dozen other breakfast spots in town that we enjoy when we are in Monterey - we blew all of them off. This place is too fast and too good, honestly to want to get in the car and head over to any of those other spots. Is this place fancy? No. Is this place big? No! Its tiny! Is the food gourmet? No! Stop asking questions. The food is delicious and hot. The coffee and tea is yummy and hot. Everything is hot. The people are super friendly and hot. I like how real they are too - it's Saturday at 6am, everyone is dragging. I asked the people behind the counter how they were doing and they were (gasp) honest! We don't want to be here! Getting to work at 5am on Saturday is terrible but I respect and appreciate a human response. I really like this place - even the pastries are good and thats a good thing because we bought a bunch of them. I will end with this and then leave you alone - we left this place at 615am and sat down in the main grandstand in Turn 4 at Laguna Seca at 715am to watch epic Historic car racing and sank my teeth into a HOT and beautiful croissant breakfast sandwich with bacon in it in the heavy fog. If you are able to find a seat outside at the rear of the store overlooking Monterey Bay the view is awesome, but there is not much of a view from inside seating nor the courtyard seating in the front of the store. They need an assigned person to patrol both inside and outside eating and seating areas since there is such a high volume of customers, the eating and seating surfaces need to be better cleaned. The shake was OK, nothing spectacular and it was less ice cream than milky (I saw them adding liquid to the ice cream machine just before my order was prepared so maybe it had not had enough time to freeze properly). As with most Cannery Row businesses there is no parking close by. This business does not seem to have any bathroom facilities nor anywhere for parents to wash off the sticky sweet treats from the hands and faces of their kids.

Welcome to another episode of: Guy buys a coffee shop because he thinks it's a good idea without having any knowledge or past experience working in a café. Not sure what this place is trying to be, the tacky and way-too-big rickshaw is an eye sore, the art and photography that used to decorate the walls are gone, and now it's just a forced "zen" café. The coffee beans from Carmel Valley Roasting Company are some of the worst in town. With such good beans like Acme, Verve, and C+S, I don't get why they choose these. Unfortunately would not recommend unless you want to loiter at a café and suck up their internet for long hours. read more

Stopped by looking for a bite to eat. They had pastries so we bought two of them. The chocolate Bundt cake had almost no taste. Seems like it was from a store bought mix. We also picked up a cheesecake pastry. It honestly tasted like those you can buy in bulk at the big box stores. Both were edible, but not of the quality I would expect at a coffee house for the price paid. read more
