I was so excited to eat here ever since I saw it while driving a few months ago while I was visiting my sister here at App. We finally got to try it today, and it was amazing. First of all, the place itself is super cute. I've never eaten at a diner before so it was really cool. I got the Cheeseburger (no mayo or onion, add bacon and lettuce) and a side of fries. It was super good. The burger was perfect, even the bun was soft and yummy. The fries were amazingly crisp too. After that, my sister and I shared a chocolate milkshake. It was huge. It was really good, but I could tell it was made with Nesquik chocolate syrup. I'm not the biggest fan of that syrup compared to other chocolate stuff, but this milkshake was pretty good. This is the spot for breakfast. Old school diner a short drive from Banner Elk or Blowing Rock. The shortest line we could find on a Saturday morning but it moved very quickly. Excellent choice, it's a diner right out of the 50s what's not to love. Good size menu lots of choices including local favorites and classic diner food. Place was crowded the day we stop for lunch but we are able to get Radion staff was very friendly and helpful. I enjoyed my seafood basket that I got portion sizes were good pricing was reasonable. Daughter really enjoyed her grilled cheese and she love the classic car that the meal comes in for the kids. My wife had a salad and it was good size and she had leftover. All in all it was a good visit everything went smooth and no hiccups. When we find ourselves back in Boone we will sure stop here again highly recommend it. read more

Reminiscent of old fashioned, greasy spoon diner of yore. 50's motif is a nostalgic piece of history. Not many true diners left. I used to frequent diners after a night of rebel rousing. Nothing like a late night of breakfast after partying hearty! But this time, we stopped in for a quick lunch. Didn't feel like breakfast so I ordered a hot open turkey with fries and green beans. Food: Was very disappointed in serving size for the cost of the meal. Meat portion was extremely small and burnt. Mashed potatoes was approximately two heaping tablespoons worth spread out to look like you were getting something. Ate here 2 days in a row. Both times we were greeted at the door and seated promptly. Dinner when we arrived in town - chicken fried chicken with mashed potatoes, white gravy and corn. The corn was a little mushy but everything else was great. Chicken was very tasty and had plenty of gravy. 2nd day breakfast - I had a waffle and my son had the French toast. I understand staffing is an issue. Everywhere. But if you see people are waiting to be seated. Don't ignore them. Rather, look him in the eye and say "I'll be with you as soon as I can." Making me Wait and wonder if I'll be seated in 5 minutes, or 45 minutes just doesn't work for me. Want a good tip? Give me good service. I know what you're dealing with. But ignoring the people who are bringing you money is not what I'm willing to deal with. That being said, the food here is always decent to good. This edition of Excited about Eating takes us to an old-time diner packed with old-fashioned memorabilia, Troy's 105 Diner in Boone, NC. This diner has all of the favorites like homemade soup, salads, 1/2 lb burgers, and their famous milkshakes. Dora here. Milkshakes? How come we haven't ordered a milkshake? Note to self: Must remedy that! Actually, we've eaten here a few times now. Right off Hwy 105, they're convenient and close to our mountain home and have saved us from driving all the way back into Boone or Blowing Rock when other restaurants high on our list are packed. This time we were aiming for Sunrise Grill but did not want to risk a 45-minute wait with two starving grandkiddos. lol. And, when you can't decide between breakfast and lunch, sometimes you just need a good old-fashioned diner fix! I chose the Carolina Cheddar Burger, a 1/2 lb burger topped with cheddar cheese, lettuce, and tomato, and blanketed with chili and coleslaw. For non-Carolinian's, anything served Carolina style is covered with chili and slaw. The burger was huge, juicy, and messy so that you have to eat it with a fork, but it was great, and as usual, the slaw added the perfect crunch. The onion rings were plentiful and crispy and were the perfect match for the burger. Dora here. After enjoying their French Toast the last time, I opted for lunch today, the Grilled Asian Marinated Chicken. The chicken was tender and well-grilled, and the pineapple added another dimension. Maybe they should rename it, though, because the Asian marinade was not even noticeable. At first glance, the macaroni and cheese does not look appealing, but it was tasty and cheesy. Very good food and reasonably priced. Waitress was attentive and sweet. This will be on our list of the places to dine when in the area. I think it's sad that they have to add gratuity to the bill and the amount added would have been an insult to the waitress. Recent trip there. The food was pretty good overall, although I thought the ice cream was subpar. BE AWARE! If you are with a group, they will automatically put an 18% tip on the bill. You have zero input, no matter how you think the waitress did. This is the first time in my entire life I was handed a bill at a restaurant where they had calculated the tip (to their favor, not the customers). Is it wrong and I will never go back there. Good option for a small meal today. Only issue I had was a portion of the chicken tenderloin was really rubbery and inedible. Just the end though and I was full on just a half meal. Hubby liked his meatloaf. May give them a try for breakfast tomorrow. read more

We ate breakfast here and my boys (who are very picky 3 and 4 year olds) chowed down hard. They loved the sausage, eggs and the Mickey Mouse shaped pancake. I had sausage gravy on a biscuit and bacon and eggs, the wife had a Cheese omelet, grits and one of their homemade biscuits with butter and jam. Troy's was absolutely terrific for brunch today! If I lived nearby, I'd eat make myself a regular. But, I do not live in or near Boone, so I'm grateful my one attempt at brunch was a win! On the recommendation of a local, five of us went to get some brunch at Troy's. Shockingly enough, the wait time at 10:30am was only 10 - 15 minutes. We were happy to find ourselves in a large comfortable booth. There, we happily perused the menu and were in awe of the very affordable prices. All of us ordered waters, with one ordering a coffee and me asking for a hot chocolate since I saw that they had a machine. Well, that machine made the best hot chocolate I've ever had in my entire life. That and the whipped cream they put on top with a little drizzle of chocolate syrup. After seeing my hot chocolate and hearing my rave, a friend also ordered one. Simply divine. I wish I had a machine like that for myself. Actually, I'm glad I don't because I'd make it and probably fail at making it the same way or drink too much of it. We placed our ordered and less than 15 minutes, 5 large plates arrived. Three of us ordered Flo's Frenchie. 3 slices of French toast, 2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, and 2 pieces of sausage (pattie or link). I had my eggs over medium and my sausage as patties. Everything was cooked perfectly. Just the right amount of cinnamon in the French toast. Just a little bit of run in the eggs. Just the right amount of flavor in the crisp bacon and perfect flavor in the sausage as well, with both the bacon and sausage hardly being greasy at all. Everyone else thoroughly enjoyed their food as well, but I'm the only person who won the battle to polish off every bite of the food on their plate.
