I went to Truitt and White to locate crown moulding for a built in cabinet in my living room which lacked personality. I arrived early in the morning on a week day before 8 with my measurements in hand the first time. The second visit was for additional components to make the cabinet go from better to wow. On both trips to Truitt and White I got fanastic service. Terence and Cory were wonderful, very knowledgeable, patient,and friendly they made appropriate suggestions. On both trips they located the perfect products and all the materials I would need to complete my project at a very reasonable price. They even put the materials in my car. I arrived at work on time due to the timely effective service received. I've gone to home depot in the past for projects like this but couldn't get assistance and the manual saw available to customers is a joke. Truitt staff cut the items for me because it wasn't too busy and they had time. on two separate occasions. (Don't except this on a Saturday). Wow, old fashion customer service, a rare find. I visited Ashby Lumber there hands on selection is very limited, no time for special orders or the high cost and going from building to building for a sample of materials is a pain. read more

Then there's Truitt & White where they might not have a wide selection of everything but they have the best of just about everything. I used to go to Truitt and White about once a week for work, and I rarely found anything to complain about. From hardware to lumber to builder referrals, these guys know their stuff. It is true that the staff is occasionally a tad elitist, and they're not the cheapest shop in town, but its still worth the trip. (And anyway, I've found that the staff is mostly just rude to annoying know it alls.) Last but not least, this is a fully unionized shop. How often do you see that at a lumberyard? The staff is treated well, and Truitt's retention rate reflects that. If you want to go somewhere with a good spread of materials, knowledgeable staff and super friendly cashiers, then Truitt is the place for you. read more

I'm the foreman for a small remodeling contractor. I often am in here daily to pick up materials and supplies. They are more expensive than Home Cheapo, but most of the staff know their stuff, so you don't spend time wandering the aisles looking for stuff. As to the tool repair complaint - I took my old Porter-Cable Tiger Saw in there about a year ago and they completely refurbished it for less than 1/2 the cost of a new one. And they've always given excellent service over the phone. And, finally, that cranky guy at the back always calls me by name and says hi, even when I'm not working with him. read more

They have the largest selection of siding materials and patterns.Their staff is helpful and you can get out of there faster than if you went to Home Despot. Trust and White does deserve 5 stars. I read many of the reviews, and certainly some poor ones seem justifiable. But for the great majority of the 100's of times I've gone there I've been very satisfied. Let's remember this is a LUMBER YARD. They have great stock of lumber, trim, decking, Windows, doors, etc. The staff serving you in the lumber yards are totally competent and helpful. One can't expect those folks to know that much about the product, they are there to help you find it and load it. As to the Door and window department, they are quite knowledgeable, but do realize that this area has a lot of things to be decided. You can't expect to go in and get a definitive answer to every small question. As to the tool department? Again, it is a lumber yard. MOST such don't carry much. Truitt and White carry a LOT of the high end brands, and provide service on them too. Their prices on such aren't even bad as compared to most. As to the other hardware, etc, they have some of the best. Their pant department is certainly not huge, nor intended to compete with the specialty paint suppliers. Yet it is run extremely well, by folks that have been there for decades. Sure, I'm sure that sometimes you might ask a question that someone doesn't know the answer to, or even that they seem unhelpful, but the great majority of the time, there IS someone there that knows a LOT about the topic and is extremely helpful. I've been a customer there for 40 years, true, but not a customer who is in there so often that all the service reps know me. I'm still treated extremely well. They treat their employees pretty well too, as can be understood because so many of them have been there for decades also. They had a fire about 16 months ago, and only finally in Jan of 2019 are re-opening the main store. (While the fire was not so large, there were issues with the permits that took forever I believe). The new store is much changed, and I'm sure it will be a while before it is operating smoothly again, but again, there is no other Lumber Yard that offers everything that T&W offer. There ARE some other good ones, but each is unique and T&W is not worse than any other, and better than most. Remember, their primary customer is a contractor. They thus more easily can serve those folks. They DO however make a great effort to serve the non professional customers. paul read more

When you need quality tools, or materials that won't fall apart after a month / year or two (think everything that Home Depot sells), head to Truitt and White. You have a project question? You're just a DIY, non professional, perhaps even female sort? Totally a-ok. While lumber yards can be a bit intimidating, these guys are worth stepping up and asking that 'stupid' question to. Cause unlike your mechanic, or most contractors, they will admit that everyone wondered the same thing, at some point - and they often have the exact answers, with helpful advice on how to tackle any building / fixing that needs doing. I am a homeowner doing big DIY projects, often for the first time (kitchen reno, closet rebuild, sunroom siding rebuild and now deck rebuild). For years, I have been coming to Truitt and White for their high-quality products and EXCELLENT customer service in all departments: lumber, hardware, and paint. I hardly write a review but I signed up because I want to just let other yelpers know how great the people that work here. Not only friendly and helpful but also very knowledgable about their products and go out of their way to help you succeed in your projects. This is a long review. For instance, Juan at the paint department is a magician. He had saved me on more than one occasions. Once I bought a gallon of white paint (as you probably already know, Benjamin Moore White also has some other color pigments in it). After using about 1/5 of the can, I changed my mind and wanted the paint made into a different color. Juan was able to mix the color I wanted using the remaining paint instead of making me by a new can of paint! I was completely blown by his amazing eye and skill with paint mixing. How about this one (which inspired me to write the review). A couple days ago, I bought two quarts of BM paint at OSH in San Rafael but OSH had mixed them badly (the mixed paint was darker than the sample by at least 5 shades!) I stopped by Truitt and White to see if Juan can fix the color as he is the paint-magician. Again, Juan with his highly-sensitive eye for color saved the day! The paint is now the color of the sample as it should have been. Juan could have easily sent me to San Rafael to get OSH to fix their mistake. But, he graciously chose to help me. THAT is an outstanding customer service!! Then, there is Joe in Lumber department and David in hardware. They are so helpful and generous with their info and guidance, especially since we are definitely inexperienced in our projects that we have taken on. Terrence and the guys in the lumber yard will happily help you pick the best lumber out of the piles. Really super group of people! For a DIY like myself, this place is like a candy store with the nicest people to help you complete your project beautifully and well! I love Truitt and White. T&W has been my lumber yard for over 40 years and, although the counter service is not what it used to be, I don't go to the yard for a social visit, and I've always gotten what I need, and some of the oldtimers like Rick continue to be helpful - if you have done your homework. But my 5 star rating is for the PAINT department. When your alternatives are the surly jerks at paint stores or the clueless amateurs at hardware stores, Juan has been a real find - not only does he know his paint and can answer your questions, he also stands behind his knowledge in his stocking decisions - for example, when to choose Regal over Aura and vice versa, and WHY. Maybe a couple of folks like him at the lumber counter would improve the reviews! read more

Sam and Allen of Truitt and White did a great job fixing our Marvin door and Marvin lock. They arrived on time (five minutes early in fact), introduced themselves and explained their process, went right to work on the door, replaced the broken lock box. They answered each of my questions and Sam even replaced the old, worn out weatherstrip, as well as give me tips on fixing a different (non-Marvin) door. All Marvin parts were under warranty, so there was no cost for typically expensive Marvin parts. Very professional work, work ethic and attitude. every once in a while, when contemplating a home project, i think, what the hell, i'll go to home depot and call it a day. but then my better angels guide me to truitt and white. i'm always happy - i get great service (find THAT at home depot), a deal on big orders (ditto) and a weirdly pleasant counter experience, especially when dealing with the lumber service. they return phone calls, in this case, making me turn my car around and aiming me towards them instead of the other guys. i appreciate things like: knowing the products; explaining the differences between the products in a respectful way; counter humor and relaxed atmosphere; "bring back your unused lumber with your receipt"; they deliver. so glad to deal with a local company and talk to the same people every time. btw, the materials for my current project cost less at T&W than from The Other Guys. read more

I went there today looking for a plumbing part for my bathroom. There was a white guy with dreadlocks whose arm was in a sling. I tried explaining what I wanted. He just wasn't listening. He was more concern chatting with a female co worker. Very Poor customer service on his part. I am sure the company is great. However, I would seek out my business else where. This is the only lumber yard worth any respect in the entire Bay Area. I have worked in the industry several years and gone to yards all over the the East Bay, SF, and Marin. Truitt and White is the most professional and comprehensive lumber yard around. Sales desks are efficient, the guys in the yard are friendly and quick to load your truck, and the tool selection in the store is meant for professional builders who need the best stuff. My father and I have bought several Festool products here and have never been disappointed. Live in a condo and know nothing about home repairs. T&W salesman was so helpful when I needed to purchase a new bathroom ceiling fan. He knew exactly what size fan was needed. It's installed and purrs like a kitten. I also needed a small piece of wood to fill a gap on my painting easel. I went to T&W (They know everything) and again the salesman was so helpful. T&W came and inspected my lumber and gave me a refund. I worked with Mark and he agreed that there was something wrong with the Lumber they sold me and he wasn't sure how I was sold it. I've been buying materials at T&W for years. Their floor sales staff is knowledgeable and highly competent. Example: On a recent visit the parts I was looking for were out of stock. Maurino, the person in charge of restocking them happened to be standing right there. He took my contact info and said he'd let me know as soon as the parts were back in stock. I heard back from him later that day with a delivery date. That's the kind of service you're not going to get at HD and is why I shop at T&W. read more

This is a professional lumber place. I needed to replace 2 doors in am emergency when moving out of my old apartment. They let me look through their stock of doors to pick the most consistent wood grain and they cut the doors to my specs at their mill within 10 min, going out of their way to accommodate my emergency situation. Not a good place for the DIY homeowner. The staff is arrogant. They expect you to know their inventory and procedures. And if you happen to come across the wrong salesperson you will have to guide them to the product you want. Today I encountered one of these salespeople who was quite anxious to tell me they did not have the trim I was looking for, until I pointed it out in their catalog. They do have some items you can't find anywhere else in the Bay Area, but they are not eager to sell them to the non-contractor. They offer professional service and a good selection of quality, professional grade materials unlike some of the schlock one finds at Home Depot. I can come here for Benjamin Moore paints, Sikkaflex or Gaco paint, hard to find items which they've been selling for years. Prices are generally fair. read more

These guys are always right; price is great; better quality - I just finished building a chicken coup and I had to make NO return trips. The guy was incredibly helpful and was able to calculate exactly how many screws I would need for the roof. Downside is they are only open until noon on Saturday and closed Sunday. read more

I cant say I would have a rating for this company other than 1 maybe since they did take my order. Once they sold me a defective product and I challenged it with my credit card, they made up a letter and sent it to the credit card company stating that we had an agreement. Very shady way of doing business by what is known as a "local" business here in Berkeley. What a shame!!! read more

Truitt is a real lumberyard. They have great inventory and can order pretty much anything else. They are not the cheapest but a lot of the time, cheapest is not the most important thing. especially when it saves time. I'm a non-professional and have not had any of the problems of being ignored or not having my questions answered (but I've never called, always go in person). Warranty Service is non-existent. I have tried detailed emails and voicemail over the last week but no response. There is never a human answering the phone. I have a 3 year old Marvin Casement Window and the retractable screen mechanism snapped. I'm ready to call a lawyer! Marvin isn't any easier to deal with. Their web site states to send them a snail mail complaint if their retailer does not respond within 5 days. Heck it's been 2 weeks and no response from T&W. Just sent a letter to Marvin. We'll have to wait at least another week to see if their warranty means anything read more

One of the only Lumber yards left in the bay area that have true service, If you seek good lumber and hardware, and If you are willing to pay the price, this is the place to shop. If you want home depot Prices and quality don't go here. I have Used their Lumber Yard for several projects on my House in Berkeley. These people take pride in their Job!! Real old timers! The only down fall is they Cater mostly to Contractors and Professionals, and their Saturday Hours is real short, They closed at 12 noon ;( and On Sunday they are closed. I have hired contractors and they swear by their service and quality. They even sent their rep to see one of my windows That I have purchased there, with a Faulty weather strip, They came back and replaced it for free. read more

Truitt and White has the best stok, by far, and sales people who know their stuff. Problem is, those very people can be astonishingly rude. I've had yard employees scream at me as I was choosing VG doug fir flooring, saying "you're not a contractor!" (I'm female). I asked that he go find me someone else to work with and the upervisor that replaced him was fantastic. So, I've had good courteous service and great tool repair. I've been verbally abused. I've been ignored by the guys behind the computers in the front. The last time I was there, I had an armful of stuff and was waiting to be rung up. No one would make eye contact, even after I loudly (and politely) asked for help. Figured I'd get attention if I headed for the door with all my stuff. Nope. No one even looked up. So I walked right out and haven't been back. Now I only go there if there is nowhere else to get something I must have. It's like having a psychotic relative: You never know which side of them you'll see. Who needs it? read more

This place used to be the Cadillac of hardware stores. They still have the incredible selection of everything, but perhaps they have gotten too big for the britches. I noted another review had a hard time ordering from them and I am experiencing the same problem. I figured it was because I only needed a little low cost (but suspending my remodel project) part. In short, I went in, talked to a sales person (they are friendly and helpful in person). She gave me a photocopy of the catalog that the part could be found on and suggested I call the store to make the order. I asked for a number. She said "just call the regular number and someone will help you." I called the next day (as it was late in the day and it took a while to get home.) I placed my order and even negotiated a non-restock fee if the part does not fit because they did not have it in stock. The helpful person on the phone even suggested a way to avoid having to return it. I was advised that the part would come in to the store in 2 days and they would call. I gave it it a week from the estimated due date before I called. When I called there was no record of my order. No memory just gone in the ether. Why direct me to call the order in, if placing an order by phone is so sketchy? When other stores are aching for business, T&W seems disinterested.
