I went to T&W to look at options for replacing aging, partly rotted double-hung windows for a 1935 Berkeley house. Vintage, beautifully built, but not indestructible. Especially the south- and west-facing windows after 90 years. Anyway, I was just looking for options, but after spending an hour with the sales person, Emerson Yearwood, and following up online on the Marvin windows website, I was sold on the Marvin "Ultimate G2" replacement inserts, which are designed not only to fit exactly into that kind of vintage construction with a minimum of installation work required, designed not just to fit exactly but to match perfectly. Out of curiosity I checked prices of similarly designed Anderson windows at Home Depot. Not even close, the Marvins at T&W are way ahead for price when "price" means value & quality. And Emerson Yearwood at Truitt & White answered all my questions (some quite detailed on design & installation) frankly and completely. read more

I initially loved my interactions with this company and how easy it was to order the three sets of French doors I needed. But then the good customer service stopped. My doors needed to be cut down to fit, so that added two weeks to the delivery date. No problem - understood. Unfortunately this means we missed our first construction date and had to push it until after the holidays and had to leave the doors there for an extra few weeks. On delivery day, an unmasked guy arrived solo and without greeting gruffly said "Just you?" They had sent one guy to deliver three sets of doors - a physical impossibility. After we unloaded the doors (I had to ask my husband to stop work to help - not safe with an unmasked guy), our contractor and team arrived and set up...and discovered the doors had never been cut down. That led to hours of waiting for calls to be returned by either our sales guy or the manager, which never happened. I finally talked to my sales person (Jeff) two hours later, who said he'd call back with an update -- which he never did. In the end it took multiple calls and emails to even get the doors picked up and after that most of my emails went unanswered. There was never an apology or an offer of a discount or anything to offset the cost of the three guys I had to pay for the day they couldn't work. The manager never returned my call. Jeff never let me know when the doors would arrive so that I could schedule my contractors. I finally got a call from the mill at the end of the week asking to set up delivery. Doors arrived at the right size and with deep scratches from hinge screws because of how they were handled. This was a $6k transaction that would have led to about $25k more for the company. But the egregious lack of customer service and non-responsiveness means I will never spend another dime there and will find another source for the additional doors and windows that we will be replacing. read more

He was generous with his time helping me select windows appropriate for my project- he definitely knows his Marvin windows but he also gave some invaluable information about logistics. Fire code requirements, why I might be better served with stainless exterior hardware (close to the coast), and some great design advice. Bonus...he's an easy and pleasant manner. I purchased 12 Marvin double hung windows. All of them are problematic. I purchased them because they are supposedly easy to slide open for cleaning. NOT TRUE. The windows pop out of their track easily. They are difficult to muscle. They don't line up right. And the cheap plastic tracks break. 30 years ago I bought a Pella window and I got Marvins this time because they were cheaper than Pella. Well I have never had trouble with my Pella window, but these Marvins are a real headache. read more

Truitt and White has repeatedly gone above and beyond with our customer service. They ordered and delivered a spare part for our new doors when our contractor absent-mindedly cut before measuring. They replaced our door gasket free of charge under warranty. Sam came to our home and adjusted our doors so they would work properly (without destroying the gasket) and he even removed and re-installed our handles for both of our Marvin clad doors. This undoubtedly protected our investment and gave me peace of mind that the doors would be a pleasure to use for years to come. All that for free! Sam went above and beyond to help us and I really appreciate it. It is rare to find so many people on staff (Glen, Angela and Sam) who are competent and efficient. I needed to replace a dozen or so double hung windows and a large fixed portrait window. Roger was helpful in addressing the latter and advising on the Marvin Tilt-Pac for the former. I provided a detail spreadsheet and schematic with my exact measurements. When they arrived after 4 weeks, I was surprised to find during installation that two of the windows were too small. I checked my measurements against my spreadsheet and then against the order and found that Roger had made a clerical error when transcribing my order. At this point, our open house was less than 10 days away, and my contractor - rather than dealing with pressing deadlines - had to shop around for two off-the-shelf windows that would fit. Of course, I had to pay for those and the best part is it still looks like crap because they don't match the Tilt-Pacs I special ordered. Roger "generously" offered to sell the correct Tilt-Pacs to me at cost (of course I would still need to wait for 4 weeks). When I explained this was not acceptable and that I expected a refund on the two windows that were ordered incorrectly, he said the best he could do was split the difference because "I signed the order." I provided my measurements in a detailed spreadsheet, not on a napkin or over the phone. I reviewed the order to make sure the window count was right and the measurements _looked_ correct, but I didn't go and double-check Rogers work. As a professional, I expected him to do that. When a vendor makes an obvious error, I expect them to own it. I will go elsewhere in the future. read more

I bought 10 Marvin windows for my home a year ago. There were problems with two of the windows that Truitt and White did not fix. I left messages with no return phone calls. When I did get hold of the service manager, she said they had to order a part for the study window that slid down a bit when opened. This happened right after it was installed. No one ever got back to me about it despite the many phone calls I made to the service department and to the person who sold me the windows. Truitt and White sold me a big window for my living room. When it was installed, it did not open all the way. A Truitt and White workman did come out and could not figure out what caused this problem. The service manager told me it did not open all the way for safety reasons. She would not explain that any further, just said such a window was not supposed to open all the way. This did not make sense to me nor I was not informed of this when I bought the window. So I called corporate Marvin Windows in New York. The person there said to call Marvin Window's Bay Area's distributer, BMD, about the issue. Great manager there. It took time to order parts, but the manager, Josh, returned my calls, always! Both problems were fixed! My living room window opens all the way. Brent just moved the balance a little. There was no problem with safety. My study window no longer slides down. The distributer, BMD, made and kept appointments and solved problems. I will never go back to Truitt and White. Why are they like that? read more

Today I walked in with a broken door handle in hand and the woman who greeted me knew exactly what part I needed, showed me how to install it, helped resolve a second issue I had with a window, and sent me on my happy way. All under warranty. I bet she thought she was just "doing her job" (and admittedly, my enthusiasm - and the hug I gave her - might have seemed over the top) but extraordinary customer service that makes life EASIER and resolve PROBLEMS is rare. And she did it without making me feel like an idiot. I also bought a house full of doors and windows from these folks 7 years ago and love them. Awesome product. I've had a number of Marvin windows installed in my home. The staff at the design center are generally very helpful in explaining available options and setting up estimates. Our contractor managed the ordering process for us and did a great job on the install. The reason for only two stars? Our windows included screens. Found out later that one screen had been made to the wrong dimensions - had to break it to get it out of the window frame. I went back to the design center so they could order a new one for me. One YEAR later, I finally have the screen. I followed up many, many times over that year (by phone and in person). Poor communication/follow-up on their part, and got every possible excuse along the way. I realize we're only talking about a screen here, but it says something about the quality of customer service post-purchase. I've heard there's been some turnover in the service department recently - maybe that's helped. Perhaps I'm an outlier. For me, I would think about going to another Marvin dealer next time. At least I can finally enjoy the breeze through my Marvin window without the bugs. read more

We had very difficult job to replace 11 windows in our house, and to fix the dry rot around the outside of the windows, replacing the trim on the interior and exterior. James went over every type of window we would need and was super patient, even after I changed my mind several times. We were lucky to have Ken Gillett do the extensive work to our house. He is a gem! I loved how he works with precision and is a perfectionist! He had his team do the stucco work around the windows and then created beautiful trim around the windows, matching the 1926 style of our house. After a day's work, he left the house clean with furniture put back in place. He got all the right permits for the job. His communication skills were outstanding, always letting me know when he or his team would be arriving and what to expect. No surprises or delays or no-shows. We went in to get a quote for a whole-house window replacement project. We were told to come back with architectural drawings and window measurements. We got the drawings and came back, drawings in hand. We spoke with a nice salesperson who spent a long time with us -- two hours -- made a copy of our architectural drawings, took copious notes, and promised us a quote within half a week. Okay. Two weeks later, we still hadn't received any communication from them. My husband followed up by phone, and was promised a quote later the same day, which we received by email -- addressed to the wrong name. Seriously? When we opened the attachment with the quote and drawings, we found that all of their drawings of the window lite patterns were wrong -- despite the fact that we had provided drawings, which maybe they lost or ignored? No explanation. If these guys can't handle providing decent customer service for folks looking to spend a huge amount of money, we are very happy to just take our business elsewhere. I don't recommend going there unless you really love feeling frustrated. read more
