Our experience with James at Golden State Lumber was horrible. His lack of responsiveness, repeated errors, and unprofessionalism were beyond frustrating. In hindsight, we wish we had listened to the other one-star reviews. James was great for the first few weeks, then repeatedly disappeared for weeks at a time. We had to call and email repeatedly just to move our order forward, often getting vague promises like, "We'll order tomorrow," followed by weeks of silence. He also made repeated errors in our window measurements--mistakes we had to catch ourselves before signing off. It took three months to order 18 standard windows and six months to order two custom arched windows, seriously delaying our remodel and move-in. We eventually involved the manager, Cory, who said the ongoing errors were because we needed to "slow down" five months in. No one apologized or took responsibility. From our first meeting to receiving all our windows, the process took 10 months. We felt held captive and deeply regret choosing this company. This was one of the most frustrating and bizarre customer-service experiences we've ever had. read more

Any response would have been satisfactory even if it was as professional as "sorry we cannot help you". I wasted my time visiting with them, providing all the necessary specifications for double doors for our laundry room. No response at all. I worked with David Gregory on a large order over the course of about a year and a half. The first phase of the project involved a full house's worth of windows and sliders, and proceeded generally flawlessly accounting for some production inconsistencies that were immediately addressed in collaboration with David and the manufacturer's tech rep. The second phase of the project involved all the wood interior/exterior doors, and it would be an understatement to say that this caused me and David some headaches. Between the manufacturer and the supplier (both upstream of David) a relatively straightforward entry door got messed up 3 different ways over 3 different attempts at the door, and it took a little over 10 months to sort out. I'm giving Golden State and David 5 stars for this because at every turn he and his back office had to resolve problems for me that they didn't create, all while transitioning to a different customer-facing payments system. I'm writing this review finally having closed out the saga, and very grateful for the collaborative spirit that David and other folks I interacted with showed. We ordered 12 new windows and doors for our addition from Golden State Windows and Doors giving them the exact specifications right from our architect. After nearly 2 months the order shows up and it seems right (the descriptions on their order form are so cryptic it was nearly impossible to decipher. The next week when the contractor is getting ready to install the windows, he sees that of the 8 windows delievered, NONE of them were the correct size and were off by 3 inches or more. We had to reframe all of the windows to the new specifications. Then last week, we installed the doors, guess what? None of these were correct either. The door style was wrong for our entry door, and our french doors opened the wrong way. I have no idea how they can get an entire order wrong, but they will! Oh, and they won't fix it or accept any responsibility for it either. read more

I ordered 15 windows, a sliding door, and a bifold patio door with Golden State Berkeley. Throughout the process, David Gregory was amazing. Super knowledgeable, helpful and generous with his time. I would often come into his office without an appointment and sit down with him for 20 or 30 minutes to go over my order. He gave me a ton of advice, and helped me realize substantial savings by changing some of the window sizes that my architect had specified to slightly smaller or larger standard sizes, saving about a hundred or so on each window. Price wise, I was expecting them to be on the more expensive side, but when I compared his quote with the same quote from Ashby Lumber and Economy Lumber, it was cheaper than both. On the service side, I had a few issues: one of the windows arrived with factory damage, and another wasn't operating properly. I sent them photos and videos, they replaced the damaged window panel pretty quickly with a brand new one, and sent a technician to inspect the malfunctioning one, which turned out to be a simple installation issue with a 5 minute fix. Their technician was great too by the way (Jose Flores), he helped me with an unrelated issue on one of my older windows. Great price, great service, will absolutely order from them again. read more

Ordered vinyl windows because the salesman showed samples of the window which were very smooth to operate. And any problems its Guaranteed? After they installed my windows I found It very hard to open & close, not like the samples the salesman showed. I was told they will ease up over time. Well its been 5 years and no change! Also, i had a major leak from one of my windows. Called the store and they sent a field rep to ck the problem. The first thing he noticed was a plastic strip which was loose where it was attached to the window frame which caused the leak. He immediately removed the strips from the window as if he was inspecting the window. He went on the say it's the window frame the was the cause of the leak. Then I get a phone call, the window company is no longer in business so I would have to buy new windows at my expense! Or I could take this up with the judge. The window is fine it's the insulation that's the problem and they fault the manufacturer to avoid fixing My leaking window! Not a reputable company to deal with! read more

Stood us up on the first appointment. Then we met with the person and eventually ordered some windows, a door, and a skylight. Well we wait 5 weeks or so and things show up. We figure out pretty quickly that the door and windows are all the wrong size. My wife called them and they basically told us too bad and we should just accept the order as is and they're not going to do anything about it. Then we hear from our designer that they just did the same thing to one of her other clients. Our contractor suggested them so we went with them. We had a previous experience with Felix at Bay Area Window Pros for a different window order a few years back, and ya know what? The right windows showed up and they put them in. Asked if there was an issue or reason for the bad attitude and was told, "yes, it's 30 minutes before closing." Last time I checked, that means you're open.. Avoid this joke of a "business." Not impressed with my experience there. The sales rep did not clearly communicate any issues that came up and when there were mistakes made with the order there is no urgency to help you resolve it. If you are putting in a big order - beware! Golden State has a hold of you and they don't really try to make an effort to resolve some of their mistakes. After our bad window experience I went to Ashby Lumber with our whole house door order and Ashby Lumber found errors in the quote from Golden State Window after cross-checking it with the architectural plans and contractor. Thankfully our sale rep at Ashby Lumber did a thorough job with reviewing our plans and specs to make sure the order was done right. Not the same experience when we used Berkeley's Golden State Windows Sales Rep. We have been waiting 10 months to complete our order and the windows are still not done. read more

James Esver was a no show to our appt which was our initial warning and now he won't return our phone calls. Our windows and doors arrived smaller than we ordered and now they are ignoring us. They made us pay in full before it was delivered and now we are stuck. They won't accept their mistake. Stay away. We should have gone with our prior window company. After having horrible LowE3 windows installed in our Alameda home (that receives very little direct sun) by another company, I started calling around to other Bay Area window companies to see what the standard would be in terms of advising clients on their LowE options. When I called this showroom, the staff member demonstrated an excellent understanding of Title 24 requirements and that he counsels clients on how LowE glass will affect both light transmission and energy savings. He would have advised us to go with LowE2. At least there are some honest knowledgeable sales people out there. read more

I attempted to replace our front door knob with an Yale touchscreen lock, not realizing that we have an abnormally thick door. I destroyed the old door knob trying to get it off. Then realized the new lock isn't compatible. Enter freak out mode. I drove around Berkeley trying to find a replacement door knob that would fit an extra thick door, simultaneously calling hardware stores around the Bay Area to see if they have anything in stock. After trying at least 5 different businesses, I was driving by Golden State and read "door" on their sign, I immediately pulled into their parking lot and went inside. They were super nice and helpful. Which was such a relief after the condescending service I had received at other establishments. The man working was even nice enough to go into their back stock and see if there were any "mistakes" that could work with my door. Ended up coming back the next day as I had to place a special order for a custom doorknob. James explained all my options and helped point me in the right direction. He suggested a specific company that shipped out of LA for a shorter turnaround time. He also called their warehouse and got me a better price since I didn't need a deadbolt! We placed an order with golden state for a door in December 2021. We were told it would take three months. After 3 months we contacted them to find out about delivery, and were told the door order was never placed because the employee who should have placed the order had died. They apologized and said they would order it asap and it would be another 3 months. again, after not hearing back for over 3 months, we contacted them. AGAIN, we were told that the door had never been ordered. This time, they "forgot" to place the order. We have had very poor communication and unreturned phone calls and emails. We are now waiting for confirmation, which we were promised to have had by end of day two days ago. I would give zero stars if possible. read more

We went to Golden State Lumber based on the architect's recommendation, to see James Esver, despite initial hesitation as we weren't familiar with Golden State Lumber. So glad we did. Not only that their prices were better than some of the other places, James also helped select the right kind of doors/windows and similar style of hardware to tie this part of the house with the rest. We ended up getting more closet entrance doors than just a couple of doors and windows for the project.
