I've been coming to Truong Thanh for a couple years now and the food has always been great. I typically order pho, but decided on a few rice dishes this time. Everything was solid and no complaints. The beef short ribs are marinated well and juicy. The lemongrass chicken is delicious as well. First time trying this restaurant, it was recommended by the hairstylist at Kelly's Hair Studio. I ordered number 40, and while the food tastes delicious, the servings of the pork is so thin compared to other vietnamese restaurants. Combo A ($16) which comes with Pho Dac Biet (large size) and your choice of spring roll or salad roll. We got the spring roll. The soup wasn't as deep as other places but the size is really large. The spring roll was dense and full of filling. Pho sate ($14.5) - wasn't very peanutty. Tastes a lot better with lime in it. I think it just has one size which is large. Not a lot of meat but a lot of noodles. Meat is only raw beef slices which tastes very tender. This rating is for the vegetarian pho, which was OK at best. I tried ordering a veggie pho (which is vegan; $12 plus tax) through their online ordering system, but the order was never accepted. So I phoned it in instead. The order was ready 10 minutes later. The soup came with lots of broccoli, some carrot, a bit of onion, deep fried tofu, and the usual thin vermicelli. The broth -- which is what makes or breaks these noodle soups -- was extremely bland, as though they just heated up some hot water, added a hint of salt, and that's it. I amped up the broth with their homemade chili oil, which helped, but this was still a very bland dish. Good price, good portion, but the broth was very underwhelming. Been coming to this little pho place since it first opened; recommended it to many friends and took many of them here over the years. I ordered the house special with extra tendon as usual with my bean sprouts cooked. My bean sprouts weren't cooked and I got 3 small chunks of tendons so I was charged $3 for the tendons and told them I didn't get extra tendons as usual but was told I got the extra tendons cause she saw it there and said the house special doesn't come with tendons. What?!?? I swear the house special always come with everything, including tendons? New owner or new menu?? So the total was $16.50? Wasn't too happy, but whatever, gave $20 and left. Warning for those who want to order from them via Uber Eats. I ordered from Truong Thanh via the app and I'm very disappointed in how they took advantage of the cancellation system. I entered in the wrong time for the scheduled order, quickly cancelled in what wasn't even five minutes, and then did another identical order for the right time. I then received a notification from Uber telling me the restaurant had charged me for the first order because they'd already begun preparing the order when I cancelled. I ended up paying double the price for the same order. I am all for this system of accountability - of course restaurants have the right to charge when they have to deal with food from a cancelled order but charging me the full price after 5 mins of prep? Seems sus, leaves a bad taste, and I hope doesn't result in bad business karma for them. So it looks like this place has undergone some change of management. There are new staff working here (looks like a mom, dad, and daughter). The hours have changed as well (it now closes 0400 or 0600 instead of opening 24h). There are new menus, with nice carved (embossed?) wood covers. As for the food? It has changed for the better. Special mention goes to their chicken wings. I was just expecting the typical fluffy battered variety, but these ones are juicy, and their spice mix is like crack. My friends and I were blown away. This dish alone is worth a trip out, and would give Phnom Penh a run for their money if they had a similar lemon sauce. They feature a new beef satay sauce rice noodle soup dish. It's so special that it doesn't even have a number like all the other items on the menu. Satay anything is good, and this is no different. Admittedly it's mostly the same bun (Vietnamese vermicelli) as the other dishes, but it's satay. And did I mention it's satay? The curry chicken is surprisingly similar to HK style. I don't ever remember seeing any curry dishes when I was in Vietnam, but what do I know. Nice and flavourful, wiht plenty of green bits and crushed peanuts on top. My hubby is a huge fan of Pho and we always have Pho when we want a simple quick lunch. We tried many Vietnamese restaurants in Vancouver, my hubby picked this one to try... We noticed the menu slightly different than other Pho places and it has a lot of varieties such as deep fried fish cakes and crab paste pho. Anyway, both of us ordered pho and roll combo: Bun Bo Hue (Pork Hock, Beef Flank in hot spicy soup) The soup flavour was different, the meat was good, the noodles was great, it tasted not like those you have in the normal beef noodle soup. (Very similar in LA Pho flavour) Pho Tai, Bo Vien (Rare beef and beef ball noodle soup) First thing I did was taste the broth while it is still the hottest. The broth was light and full of flavour. Cha Gio, Goi Cuon, Nem Cuon (spring roll, shrimp salad roll and minced pork roll) It was ok coz the salad and minced pork roll was premade and a bit too cold and dry. In keeping with our goal of trying out all our neighborhood pho restaurants, we found ourselves at Truong Thanh. I had never really noticed this place, but the neon lights outside caught my eye tonight, and when I saw the sign on the awning that said "beef special noodle soup + 1 spring roll $9.50", I was sold. The place was freezing inside, perhaps to make you appreciate your bowl of hot pho that much more? Unfortunately, the special promo listed on the awning has now gone up to $10.50. The lady said it's because the awning is from 5 years ago. Well, geez, slap a "10" over the "9" then. Anyway, we got our food fairly quickly. The spring rolls were a decent size - I'd say about 6 inches long, but nothing really special otherwise. As for the pho, they were a little cheap on the bean sprouts, and my husband and I felt like the serving size was just a little on the smaller side, even though it's advertised as a "large". We both left the restaurant feeling mildly satisfied, but not full. My husband actually started getting hungry again shortly after arriving home. The broth was good, flavorful without tasting oily or salty. I guess house special means something of everything - beef, beef balls and some tripe, but I wish they wouldn't be so stingy, as I only had 1 whole beef ball and a couple of pieces of tripe. My favorite part is that they use the fatty slices of beef here, which is truly the way to my heart when it comes to pho. Easily one of the top 100 Pho places on Kingsway, Vancouver. But seriously, I've eaten Pho at 5 different places at the intersection of Kingsway and Victoria in the last 2 weeks. Just look at my check-in history if you don't believe me. The Rare Beef Pho and the Lemongrass Chicken with Pork on rice were pretty much the same as all the other places in recent memory. The rice dish lost marks for the fact that the Pork chop was 50% fat. The Garlic Fried Chicken, however, was great. But, it worked out to be $1 per piece which was difficult to accept for a guy raised on 25¢ Wednesday Wings. Very nice and kind waitress. She welcomed the guest with enthusiasm. Always enjoyed this place because of their food and hours. Service has always been great every time I've been. I always order the rare beef pho and it's amazing. I just love it! The broth is not too heavy or too light. The beef is sliced thinly enough so that it cooks in the broth instantly, yet still being super tender. As for service, I've never had a problem. This place is known as one of the few places that serve good food(depending on what you order) and open till late. You can come here and for a full course meal or just a regular snack or even just a drink. From my experience, I would recommend their deep fried tofu and their dried noodle. I mostly just order these everytime i visit. Their deep fried tofu is served with this tangy-salty sauce, which I think is made up of mostly fish sauce and soy sauce. Dip your tofu with this and it's just amazing. Their dried noodle is one of a kind. They do not have a lot of options with dried noodle compared to their pho. * Disappointing pho house on several levels * I'm always suspicious of a place that toots its own horn. Their sign reading, "Best Vietnamese food in Vancouver" was a bit of an eyebrow raiser. The series of professional photos by a rather new Yelper was another. But there were many positive Yelp reviews from established reviewers so I figured I would give it a shot to see what I was missing. I ordered my typical test of pho tai gan (pho with rare beef and tendons) to see how it stacked up. The garnish plate arrived first and it was a positive sign with very fresh and generous amounts of basil, good looking sprouts, chili, and lime (is the lime shortage of 2011 over finally?!?!?!). The one small piece of truly rare beef was ok, but not the best cut. Overall the beef was quite disappointing. The tendons were decent, but there were only 2 very small pieces. The broth, which was highly touted, was also disappointing. It was excessively oily with big pools of grease floating on top. It was as if they hadn't taken the care to nurture the broth while building up flavours - it was a very one dimensional flavour. The noodles were also slightly overcooked as well to the point of almost being mushy. 2 stars overall for this bowl of pho - there are much better options available at the numerous pho houses in the area. We arrived in Vancouver late last night and was looking for something opened at 2 in the morning. Did some yelping and wa la! Found this Vietnamese restaurant that was open till 6am!!! I ordered 13B which is beef pho with rare beef and beef meat balls. It was tasty but it wasn't better then my boyfriends free range chicken pho. The broth of their chicken pho is probably the best I've ever had. Yes, it beats my moms chicken pho LOL. I was very surprised with how busy they were at 2 in the morning. Customers after customers. In regards to the Bun Bo Hue, it was a huge bowl, there was a lot of meat, a lot of chili oil and the noodles were a bit skinnier/thinner than other places. It definitely had a hole-in-the-wall feel to it and for whatever reason I had a tough time finishing my BBH. We were the only ones eating in there and it felt very awkward when the owners/workers decided to have some kind of argument right then and there. I didn't even feel compelled to return again to try their regular Pho or other items on their menu. The only reason why we came in here was to try something different. A food choice head and shoulders better than churches chicken... I've been to this pho restaurant too many times to note at this point. It gets VERY busy after 9pm (warning) however they do have many tables/chairs and area debit/cash. I recently tried their satay special pho (peanut version) - so incredibly good. Even their side dish of chicken wings are wonderful (be sure to get 10 pieces!). Note that some of the choices might come out of the kitchen less than meaty - this isn't cool so if you feel they're scrimped then do say something - this was the case only once out of the 15-20 times my boyfriend and I visited in the last three months. This was my happy place for the past 50 nights until last night, when I had the fish item and realized that most parts of the course was not well-done and I ingested huge portion of raw fish. I complained to the server but no solution was offer until later I asked them to cook it more. Pretty good pho broth. It has the right saltiness and flavour. The beef has a good amount of meat and fat. Unfortunately I feel they could put more me at in the pho. I've seen previous reviews about how this is a family run restaurant, and really I wish I could support this one. Actually, that's what drew me into this place- the expectation of delicious home style Vietnamese food. I ordered a hu tieu kho, and a durian shake. My sister ordered Com ga nuong, ( grilled chicken dish) and a strawberry shake. The shakes were good, but would've been perfect with a tablespoon or two less of sugar. The food was unimpressive. I wish I took a picture but my sister's chicken dish was literally just plain rice with a few scant chicken pieces on top and a pitiful spoonful of veggies. Overall it was okay, I guess? I heard about their chicken wings on instagram and had to investigate. I decided to cover this restaurant for my youtube channel. Its called vancity food crew and its ful of restaurant video reviews. The girl oversold them though and they are good, but not better than the ones at Phnom Penh. We also ordered some basic dishes and everything was adequate. I'm told this place is under new management. I never came here when it was run by the previous owners, so I can't compare in that sense. Unlike the vast majority of reviewers here, I came here during normal hours, so my opinions aren't at all influenced by hours of clubbing, when often, anything open will taste good (Dennys, I'm looking at you).
