For example, when my dog was younger, she was prone to recurring ear infections. After the first visit for this problem, the subsequent visits should have been covered as per their policy (further instances of the same ailment). My claim was denied. They said it was considered a new problem, not a recurrence. Every year my premiums went up significantly. This year, they increased my premium 30%! I cancelled my policy. Not knowing exactly what was wrong they did multiple tests and still weren't sure but put her on liver medication as well as several others to see if it would help. I got Trupanion insurance 10 years ago when my dog was a puppy. I basically forgot about it until Sunday. Sunday my dog was having trouble breathing. I took him to the vet and it turned out he was having heart failure. The vet recommended taking my dog to the emergency room. They estimated the cost to be $8,000 to $10,000. knowing I had pet insurance but wasn't sure how it works I decided to take the risk and go, as it's my dog and it was a life & death situation. I was on the line with a customer service represented who explained that because I got the insurance when my dog was a puppy everything would be covered after I reached my $500 deductible. My policy covers 90% of the cost and they actually worked with the Blue Pearl Emergency Animal Hospital so I was only responsible for my share. It was a lifesaver. Not having to worry about reimbursement allowed me to focus on what was important. After receiving my bill and being out of pocket $2,000 I had a few questions regarding the invoice. I spoke to another amazing representative from trupanion who empathized with my situation and explained all the charges. I couldn't be more grateful for having pet insurance and it's very reassuring to know that I know have met all of the deductible and my dog will be fully covered for remainder of his life, including his heart medications. My dog is old and I told them that and they charged me over $270.18 and never told me of a waiting period either. Said they would pay my vet directly. I have a Bernese/Aussie mix and joined Trupanion when he was 10 weeks old. I had lived in Andover Ma at the time. On 10/2021 my monthly bill was $41.20. My monthly bill on 5/15/25 will be 279.05. I currently live in Newmarket NH. Think about this. Health insurance for my dog through Trupanion is $3500.00 per year. The reason(s) rising costs of vet care, overall health of the insured population, inflation, the economy and due to " the introduction of new vet technologies". Whatever the rationale, it is hard for Trupanion to justify my starting monthly payment of $41.20 to $ 279.05 whatever the reason. If you do decide to go w/Trupanion, I would recommend ONLY using Veterinary Services that are utilizing Trupanion software. In the event your claim is submitted through the app or otherwise, there is ZERO chance that the claims specialist in reviewing the claim and the medical record will be able to arrive at the correct reimbursement/disposition rate. My dog had a route canal performed two years ago and is required EVERY year from the initial procedure forward to have a follow up to check the viability of the tooth, x-rays etc. While under anesthesia, I have the dentist do a cleaning. I split the date of service into 2 seperate and distinct invoices so as to no leave money on the table in Trupanion prorating reimbursement of the anesthesia @ 50% which is the norm. This year the dentist cut some of his gum that was overgrown. The bill listed as one of the services Gingivectomy, 3 minits/units @ 54.00 a minute. ($162.00 total for the 3 minutes it took while under). Despite me speaking with several intake workers and 3 Supervisors, the claim was incorrectly reviewed and paid as a Gingivectomy, starting a new deductible rather than covered services for a follow up the the route canal. I had spoke to Toni and Megan both supervisors numerous times prior to sending in the claim/invoice to try and avoid this. Now, my money will be tied up for a minimum of 6 weeks while my appeal is being reviewed. Aside from the 580.49% increase in price, my current claim/invoice as well as all of the follow-ups to be done each year will no doubt be processed incorrectly. I cannot begin to tell you the level of frustration I have. I gave 2 stars as everyone is pleasant when answering the phone. I would recommend shopping around to a number of Insurance carriers prior to signing up with Trupanion. Once you do sign up, and in the event your pet has had procedures/claims, you are stuck with Trupanion as other insurance carriers will not cover pre-existing conditions. Frank read more

Premium has increased more the 50% in less than 2 years, with no claims at all. Trupanion claims that costs and claims have gone up in my area and for my breed. When asked for details about the size of the area and number of pets in their metrics, they are unable to produce any evidence. Additionally, their automated payment system has been rejecting my credit card, but they are able to trigger a payment manually. For months they've been claiming it's an issue with my credit card company and so I've spent hours over the phone with credit card company trying to resolve the issue. Eight month later, Trupanion finally admits it's a known bug in their system. I can only assume they have no intention of fixing it as they've ignored my request for a timeline and recommend that I change my credit card number or I need to manually make payments every month. read more
