Fun and authentic. Appeals to American taste while truly unique. Pastas are homemade and excellent. Varenyka Filled with potato and cheese or topped with onion. Service was efficient but newbys and uninitiated not the focus. Artwork and history here too

Fantastic restaurant in Ukrainian Village. Authentic Ukrainian food, drinks, decor. Kind, efficient staff. Cool ambiance. My boyfriend and I very much enjoyed our meal, atmosphere was fantastic and I'm looking forward to exploring more Ukrainian dishes and culture. Absolutely a must visit in the city and a great way to explore the beautiful cultures the city has to offer.

This Ukrainian restaurant is definitely worth visiting. Once you visit, you'll want to come back again and again. The decor is beautiful, and the food is delicious. I recommend the borshch or mushroom soup, varenyky, and the meat platter appetizer.

Super circular potato pancakes...mushroom sauce (not mustard!) is the tits.

Updated review! Came for our anniversary and had a delightfully delicious time! I don't drink alcohol but I was supremely excited when I convinced our waiter, Dima, to serve us the wheel of fun with berry compote and uzvar -- which is a spiced dried fruit juice that tastes like a campfire. It's cold but intriguing. Though I might not order it a second time, I was glad to try it and a single serving is only $5 that they split into 4 shots. The wheel of fun honestly made my night! And the berry compote carafe is definitely worth $15. We had the party platter of varenyky and substituted the red beef ones for more potato ones. But next time I really want more orange pork varenyky! They're sweet and savory and I was reluctant to share the 4 on the plate! We also had barosh (polenta balls) and the potato pancakes (super circular!), which, much like my previous review, were a hit! The mushroom sauce that comes with both is just soooo good. I love mushrooms, know why? Cause I'm a FUN guy. Circular foods, circular drinks, all come full circle. And I will come again, the next special occasion I have. Quite a delight on a Friday night! And surprisingly they were not too busy and the twinkle lights and the Christmas tree outside really made it feel cozy and special.

Now this was an experience! Delicious cocktails, authentic Ukrainian appetizers presented artistically, and hearty, exquisite and piping-hot mains. The service was excellent - friendly, informative and kind. The environment is whimsical and tasteful. It gives that Eastern European "going out tonight" vibe. Tryzub feels like vacation, with Ukrainian culture permeating every delicious course.

I just realized the last time I wrote a review here was 7 years ago. In that time, I've been back at least 30 times, and it's one of my most favorite restaurants in the US. Honestly, I'd eat here every day if I could. Everything is phenomenal here. Literally. I don't typically care for sauerkraut: love there's. I avoid stuffed cabbage: am obsessed with theirs. Just come here and order one of everything off the menu and thank me later. Also be sure to dine here at night, the red lighting is a vibe. The service is some of the best as well, so if you're visiting Chicago, go here.

I LOVE THIS PLACE! Went in without any expectations after stumbling upon it. I was jarred the moment I saw the interior. Super eccentric, colorful, the kind of place you would want to sit in for hours. Be sure to bring someone you like because you will not want to leave!! I got the pierogi platter, which upon presentation alone had me bouncing in my seat. The four flavors served were potato and onion (yellow), beef (red), sauerkraut (green) and pork (orange). They were all DELISH, my friend and I were absolutely floored by the beef. It was seasoned sooo well, I genuinely could have eaten a bowl of just the beef. We also had the honey cake, the PERFECT balance of sweetness, so airy and light and pillowy. GIVE THESE PEOPLE SOME LOVE!!!!! THEY'RE SMASHING IT!!!

When I stepped into Tryzub, I felt like I was back in my Lviv. The restaurant was beautifully adorned with Ukrainian relics, books about Ukraine, and magical string lighting. The ceilings were a marvel to look at and the corner of the room was painted with a mural of Lviv's center. We had made a reservation as it was my birthday and Easter weekend. It was a good thing we did, because Tryzub was fully packed. When we got there, we checked in and were promptly seated. Our waitress, Vasylyna, took great care of us and I loved how I was able to order in Ukrainian. As far as the food, everything was delicious and tasted like back at home in Ukraine. I had the Chicken Kiev and my better half had the goulash. You cannot go wrong with either dish. For drinks, we had the kompot, a sour cherry infused spirit (which our waitress brought for me as a birthday gift), and a light Ukrainian beer. I really liked the infused spirit, and I loved the range of flavors that they have of these. Even though the restaurant was a 25 minute Uber ride from our hotel, we are so glad that we came here. My birthday celebration was complete at Tryzub and a special thank you to Vasylyna who made it even more special!!

Hand made Potato&Cheese Varenyky Pirogie . Good but they put diced red paprika, it's should not be there ...

What an incredible hidden gem!! My husband and I came here for a date night and it definitely impressed. Serving Ukrainian dishes, both traditional and elevated, with an eclectic coktail menu in a very culturally adorned and spacious setting, Tryzub impressed on every front. Highly recommend their medley dish that's roasted in a pumpkin, the flavors and presentation were incredible and you get to have a bit of the pumpkin in the rind afterwards! Service was attentive and eager to explain any menu items that were confusing. A bit on the higher price point but worth every penny, highly recommend!

Yelp... I wrote this entire review in Russian... then I went to post and you only left punctuation. What gives?! Here is the translation of what I wrote, thank goodness I had it saved. Please forgive that which sounds funky in translation. I won't lie. I've been putting this review off and on. I've been here twice, tried a lot of things, and haven't written a review. So, this review won't have all the details that I usually include, where I take each dish apart and tell you everything I thought. No. But this review will be in Russian (I wish, Yelp, I shake both my fists at thee!) I have Ukrainian heritage. Although my parents came from the Soviet Union, they were in Ukraine. The dishes my mother cooked were Ukrainian and those that were eaten in the general Soviet Union. Therefore, although I am not an expert on Ukrainian gastronomy, I ate real Ukrainian dishes at home. This is what Tryzub does well. Their food is one hundred and ten percent based on traditional food that was eaten in Ukraine and the General Union. What is especially cool is that Tryzub not only cooks traditional food, but does something creative with each dish. The quality of the ingredients and the food is amazing. Everything is thought out very well and everything is very fresh. I will tell you a big secret, because my mother does not read my reviews, that the mushroom soup I had here was a little bit tastier than what I eat at home. Now let's talk about the atmosphere. The whole restaurant is covered with memorabilia related to Ukraine and Ukrainian heritage. The decorations take up practically every space on the wall. But even then, they did not overdo it. There are restaurants that throw a bunch of pictures on and the result is God knows what. This is not the case here. Here you feel like you are in a Ukrainian home. And I want to add, some of the decorations are even a little funny. Now I want to talk about the service. It was very friendly. The food came out of the kitchen quickly, and the waitress who looked after us did everything in her power to make sure we had an awesome time. I'll tell you what helps me: I see "salo" or "borscht" - I know what it is. These dishes don't scare me. I imagine an American might see "traditional plate of lard" and ask: "What is this?" They'll tell him: "It's a pork product that's so fatty that it'll melt in the pan." Some will probably look at this waitress as if she had three heads. These things don't scare me. But it's precisely what I know that gives me the opportunity that when I bring my friends here who don't have Ukrainian or Soviet heritage, I can tell them what it is and tell them not to be afraid. In the worst case, I'll order it for myself, and they'll pinch off a piece of mine and then they'll understand: "Oh, this is delicious, listen!" Tryzub is one of the best restaurants I've been to. Not only in the Ukrainian food category, but in general. I would happily recommend this place to everyone. And if friends come to visit me, I won't let them go home until they are here.

We thought it was really good. We have things that we want to try for next time - that is always a good sign! Great atmosphere - it feels like your grandmother's house from the old country, there is so much to look at. The servers were very accommodating and friendly.

No. But I am a different case. I have Ukrainian heritage, and almost everything here is extremely similar to what my mom makes at home. Considering that I am looking at a relocation to Chicago, leaving mom 1,000 miles away, having something which so closely reminds me of home is pretty much priceless. Now, of course I have to say that there is no borscht in the galaxy, nay, the universe , that holds a candle to my mom's. Thus, I have to be careful here: I can tell you that to me, the borscht was a little on the sour side and lacked meat... but that's because of the impossible comparison being made. So, if I am to remain impartial, I will say this: everything in Old Lviv was 100% authentic, 100% delicious, and 100% approachable. To those with Ukrainian heritage, you may find yourself in the same boat as me, where it's terrific but not like mama used to make. However, if you do not have that background - you should 100% get on the 66 bus and try it out! Bonus for friendly service, a cozy vibe, and a very reasonable prices!

Born in Ukraine, I can confirm the authenticity of the cuisine. We tried several appetizers and main dishes and every single dish was A+! Fish soup had a wonderful flavor, black cheese Varenyky proved the chef's skill to make an excellent house made pasta , traditional Ukrainian Banosh (a Ukrainian version of Polenta on cream served with feta and pork fried lard) was mouthwatering, Golubci (Stuffed Cabbage) that we ordered as appetizer melted in the mouth and had an absolutely perfect proportion of the meat and rice complimented by a masterfully created sauce. Our main dishes did not disappoint either. My husband's octopus was tender and well seasoned, Kyiv chicken was lightly breaded and was very tasty, beautifully plated duck leg confit was at the level of the best French restaurants , and the roasted rabbit leg in the mushroom sauce , so rarely seen on the other menus, was to die for. Most of the food we ordered was pale and underseasoned - if that's the tradition, I'm sorry for Ukrainians. The lard assortment - the Ukrainian board - was unexpectedly excellent, though the sport peppers were undoubtedly added to please American palates. Points for simply trying: this is not a cuisine you find on every corner, and the effort is real. But the vareniki (a.k.a. pierogi to Poles) were store-freezer quality, one kind dyed an alarming charcoal black for no obvious reason. Then the service. Two of the dishes we ordered weren't available. The mains arrived before the appetizers - and arrived lukewarm. Our waiter gave the impression he'd rather be anywhere else. The room doesn't help: it's set up like a banquet hall, bandstand and dance floor included, dressed for a wedding party. The crowd was mostly Ukrainian, which is the one honest endorsement here. And then the bill. A 3% credit-card fee, never disclosed until the check arrived - not on the menu, not a word from the waiter, just there at the end like a parting gift. That's not a gray area: Visa and Mastercard both require a surcharge to be disclosed before you pay, and it can't exceed the merchant's actual processing cost. Springing it on the receipt breaks the rules they agreed to when they started taking cards. If you're going to charge it, post it before I order, not after - the sleight of hand colors everything else. Two stars. One of them is entirely for the lard.

Loved the fresh pop of the trout roe paired with the tangy cream cheese. Potato Pancakes (sea buckthorn jam, feta): Really good--perfect texture with a great balance of savory and sweet. But what other word exists for capably made Ukranian food? It is comfort food qua comfort food. The Platonic ideal of such. Savory in the extreme with more subtle notes of sweet and tart. On a previous trip to Chicago I lodged in a neighborhood bordering Ukraine Village. The proximity allowed me to sample a few establishments from the Ukraine. Things were fine; nothing extraordinary. On this more recent trip, I braved an excursion to the western suburbs, just for the Magic Jug. A food blogger named Hammond said it's the best. He did not lie. So it's in the occidental hinterlands of the city. And yet, my fellow diners were all from the Ukraine. So Ukranian, in fact, they all spoke the mother tongue. Besides that, the surroundings were not particularly Slavic. Minimalist pinewood interior makes you think moreso of Japan and less so of the Eastern Bloc. But anyhow. The chief feature that makes it so good is that everything is seasoned and flavored perfectly. The cooks - all from the Ukraine and all women - each possess palates with sniper rifle precision. The pelmeni (stuffed dumplings of similar appearance to tortellini). So beefy. So oniony. And finished with an herbaceous garlicky seasoning. The golubtsi (stuffed cabbage) at Magic Jug is without it's usually tomato sauce, giving you breathing room to really basque in the chicken broth in which the rice and veg were cooked. The effect: think a reconstructed chicken noodle soup - only with a fat dollop of smetana (sour cream). And the stewed liver. Really like a liver Diane. Don't be a wuss, eat the liver. Get it with mashed potatoes. I had mine with buckwheat so you don't have to. They also have several selections of house made bread. I ordered the one that's like a pull-apart brioche. Too full to appreciate it from on a visceral level, I was still able to note the craft involved. Within it, there contained the balancing act of well developed gluten and pliant interior.

If I have to be super super picky, though, the potato and cheese pierogis tasted only a slightly bit doughy, but it was still great and I'm planning on paying Smetana multiple visits in the future.

Food - 5/5 Pierogi plate - selection of different fillings, boiled or pan-fried Polish platter - sausage, perogis, stuffed cabbage roll, potato pancakes with sour cream and mustard, served with creamy tomato-based sauce or the other sauce. Chicken shwarma wrap - delicious. mostly filled with mozzerella cheese and crunchy vegetables, seared in panini press. I would not describe this as schwarma wrap whatsoever. Coffee came out with 3 sugar cubes on the side of the tea cup. The hygienic part of me is screaming. Doesn't it make more sense to use a sugar bowl?

We made a reservation as we were a group of 5 and it was not an issue, but it could be on a weekend. There was only one server, but she was on top of her game. The restaurant is European, so it's not designed to be the American rush to eat. We started with potato pierogi to share. They were so amazing! My entree was stuffed chick with dumplings and a lovely cucumber salad. Very good, decent portion. The only detractor could be the restroom which is down a flight of stairs, and could be a challenge for anyone with mobility issues. Def worth checking out.

The red beet soup had a clear red broth with no pieces inside, and was accompanied by a meat croquette. This was my first time having a Polish croquette, and I would say that it tasted more like an egg roll than a Japanese croquette: less greasy, with a significant quantity of minced filling. Then came the main attraction: the special for two, a sampler of Poland's biggest hits. The potato pancakes and breaded chicken were golden brown and had a slightly crisp crust. The pierogies were shaped quite like some Chinese dumplings I've had, but the filling was unmistakably Polish. The stuffed cabbage had a generous amount of meat and came in a hearty tomato broth. The kielbasa had very good taste and texture. The bacon-wrapped plum was something I had never heard of before, but it was quite tasty.

We started off with the caviar which came with blintzes on the side, egg salad, chopped onions, and sour cream. We ordered a bottle of champagne that was the perfect combination. We wanted to try a bunch of different items so we decided to split the Russian Tea Time platter for two as we were able to try some appetizers and then the entree plate included beef stroganoff, stuffed cabbage and chicken kebab. Everything was so tasty! My favorite food was the caviar, stuffed cabbage and for dessert we split the honey cake. The inside of the restaurant looked nicer in person than the photos I had seen online. The ambiance was sophisticated and serene. Our server was very attentive and they were quick to clear any dirty plates.

The menu has classic Eastern European food. I love a stuffed cabbage roll but theirs is a little sweeter than my mom's Hungarian version, but one is a meal. The classic beef stroganoff met expectations and so did the Chicken Kiev. For dessert we had the Vareniki with cherry sauce. It's a delightful place and there is parking across the street. The wine list is limited as I didn't see any reds.
