The eclectic menu was clearly written by my food soulmate. Every dish we had as part of the Anniversary tasting menu was wonderful with the Ruffles ice cream being the most amazing finish. Service was so kind and exceptionally personal which elevates meals to the next level. They also swapped cutlery as often as the plates which I also loved. It's like the inside of your favorite watering hole stashed a secret lauded chef in the back and brought you amazing food in the most unassuming and charming way. I went to Heritage with the gals for "girl dinner" which comes with a Caesar salad, fries, caviar, and a martini for $30. Quite the steal for how much you get! Their happy hour menu is playful and has fun combinations of different bites and drinks. We also enjoyed the oysters, which were great and are half off for happy hour, normally $6 each. About two months ago I decided to find a restaurant for our friend group to celebrate he holidays. Most restaurants would not take a reservation for eleven people without calling, and even after that, they would insist that our group order from a limited menu. Heritage Restaurant & Caviar Bar easily accepted my online reservation, and made the process SO easy. I had heard a lot of good things about Heritage, so I was excited to go there. Our server Bradley (I believe that he's the manager, too) greeted us with a warm welcome and escorted us to a large, elevated U-shaped banquette near the entrance. Although it was a little tight, it was perfectly cozy for our large group, The cocktail menu is intriguing, and many in our group enjoyed ordering what amounted to the bartender's choice in the liquor of your choice. The food menu is huge and deftly mixes Polish and Korean flavors in many of the dishes. The restaurant owner visited our table and made a few suggestions. There were plenty of good options for the two vegetarians in our group. No one at our table ordered caviar, but there are plenty of options on the menu to choose from. The food was absolutely delicious and beautifully-presented. My husband and I split a half-dozen oysters. They were small, but very good. A duck egg roll, beet salad (both delicious) and the prime rib pierogis rounded out our meal. The only only dish that fell slightly short was the pierogi. The entree was served with two huge pierogi, but the dough and meat were a little chewy. Interestingly, we took one of them home, and it was better the next day after some gentle microwaving. Service is friendly and wonderful, and the menu is large and intriguing. If you're looking for an unusual dining experience, you cannot go wrong at Heritage Restaurant & Caviar Bar. read more

I've been going to Heritage for about eight years, starting from the very first day they opened. I still remember the co-owner, the chef's wife, showing me around the brand-new space, even taking me into the kitchen. I think I might've been among the first guests through the door. Over the years, I've supported this place regularly, A few weeks ago, I heard they would be closing, which was sad news. This neighborhood has seen so many great restaurants disappear, and I wasn't sure why Heritage was next. I came in again, and the same woman mentioned it was just time for a new chapter and that they wouldn't be renewing their lease. Today, I happened to be in the area, so I stopped by again to eat and support them. I ordered drinks and several items from the menu. Unfortunately, the food was incredibly underwhelming. Everything that came out was cold, dry, and tasted like it had been sitting out. The burger especially was cold and disappointing. I didn't say anything, thinking maybe it was just a one-off, but when the second dish came out the same way it honestly put me in a bad mood. Then the bill came and I felt ripped off. I had come in to support them one last time, but it was clear to me that things had changed. Maybe the chef, who is also the owner, has already checked out. And while I understand that, I can't keep paying premium prices for food that feels like an afterthought. That will be my last visit to Heritage. I wish the team the best in whatever comes next. The place was pretty busy on a Saturday afternoon and we were pretty lucky to have snagged the only 3 bar seats left available  What we ordered: Smoked Sturgeon Chlebicky: the smoked sturgeon was great though I thought the rye bread was too tough Crispy Scallion Pancakes: not what I expected. The pancakes were very fried but they were great Eggs on Eggs: light and unique. The kimchi soft scrambled eggs did not have a strong taste and it went well with the lump crab meat Duck Confit Biscuit and Gravy: tasted ok. it was a bit too heavy for me bc there was a lot of gravy Desserts (Cream cheese kolachzi, sesame cream packzi, sourdough doughnut): all pretty good We also ordered caviar on the side to share and it was great. Forgot to write a review after a wonderful experience as an out of towner. Admittedly, our experience was probably a little unique since we had the restaurant to ourselves on a random Monday at opening, but nevertheless, we had a great time. I forgot our waitress/bartender's name... Cassie? Maybe? Well, she was great! Her recommendations off the menu were exactly what we wanted/needed as casual diners with blue collar taste. The Owner's Wife Martini was decadent to start (blue cheese olive + pickled pearl onion + dollop of caviar) and had a wonderful briny finish. We then left our mixed drink future to our bartender (an option on the menu) and she *mixed* up two drinks that were so well balanced that I was sorry to finish them. The food was equally excellent! Lots of accoutrements for the caviar/roe dishes and our main course (the upscale Italian beef and the asparagus with strawberries) was delicious and filling. To cap it all off, the 90s-2000s playlist kept us jolly the entire time. We loved our experience at Heritage and hope to be back if we ever back in Chicago! read more

We came as a last hoorah before they close. We thoroughly enjoyed our previous visits over the years. Unfortunately, this last experience was disappointing. The service was poor - they didn't seem to be familiar with several items on the menu, and food came out haphazardly, with some folks waiting for their mains while others had already finished theirs. One dish had different parts of it come out separately such that half of it got cold waiting for the rest to arrive at the table - why? We had some dietary questions, and even though we asked multiple times about a dish's ingredients, we never got a clear answer. Most upsettingly though, we found a literal BOLT in a piece of BREAD. A large, metal bolt that one of us bit into. Insane. I'm assuming most everyone there has checked out due to their looming closure. What started off as spontaneous happy hour visit turned out to be anything but happy. Recommended by friends, we decided to try this place which is supposed to be pretty upscale. I'd have to say in particular it was this one female server that threw so much attitude it ruined the evening. If you're going to just make snarky comments to customers, maybe it's best you just take the order and not say anything at all. Since we came there for happy hour, we wanted to order from just the happy hour menu. It's not like I can't afford full priced food, I just wanted to take advantage of happy hour deal. I could tell from the look on her face when I showed her my free shot promo, she was not happy we were there. After placing our orders from the happy hour menu, she replied, are you only going to order from the happy hour menu? You don't want anything from the full menu? Like what was the point of that comment? Why not just ask if you can recommend something or ask if there's anything else we would like from the full menu? I wanted to sit next to my date so I moved my chair. Despite there being a giant space for everyone to move, the same server demanded I move back due to "fire hazards" Funny how that's not an issue when they block exit doors with planter boxes... hmm... I will say the food was top quality; oysters, burger, and fried pickles (all house made) were all delicious. When I asked for the bill, I got another snarky comment from that same server. "Is that all you'll want from this restaurant tonight?" Again, WTF was that necessary? Like what was that supposed to mean? What I wanted to initially dismiss as just misunderstandings was now clear to me I was dealing with a totally racist woman who clearly didn't want Asians dining in there. What really ruined the end was when it came time to pay. I have a Canadian credit card where we are normally required to enter a PIN code to pay. Let me preface by saying, I've used this card everywhere in the USA and never had a problem. The server tried to run my card and she said that it was saying the card was invalid. I found out it's because she kept trying to enter a random PIN code. She brought the card back and I told her I could gladly enter the PIN. Her response was that she can't let me behind the bar. I asked her to just bring the machine over or just at least to the bar... she refused. She told me to give her my PRIVATE PIN which would allow anyone to spend on the card and I would be ineligible for fraud protection. She's like, write down your PIN and I'll enter it for you then I'll throw the piece of paper away. I refused. So we were at kind of a stalemate. I finally decided to use a different card which had the same issue but the manager decided to get it authorized for a signature instead. Such a cool spot! Despite the cold weather outside, my friends and I felt right at home at Heritage. The whole restaurant felt both inviting and tasteful, plus our server was hilarious and quick with suggestions for the whole table. We came for the happy hour menu, but stuck around after to try the rest of the menu. Each item appears to be a fusion of East European dishes with Korean influences. This place never disappoints. I went in on 4/20 because I wanted to try their 4/20 menu. We came during happy hour so oysters are half off. We ordered 2 dozen of their happy out oysters. They brought them out with their cocktail sauce and giardenara. I love the oysters. They always taste so fresh never fishy. We also got their fried pickles. They were good but tasted a little over seasoned. The jam that they were served with really complemented them though. It offset the taste. From the 420 menu, we got the ribs and Korean chicken nuggets. The Korean nuggets were so nice and crunchy! A little spicy too but very very delicious! The ribs were also very good. What a lovely place for some great food and drink, also a lovely date spot. We made it for half off wine bottle night so we were off to a great start. Tiff was a gracious host who had some great recommendations on not only their menu but some areas to check out in Chicago as well. I came here for Restaurant Week dinner. I wasn't impressed by the food. The first course steelhead trout was so hard. I was expecting the rice to be soft, but it was as hard as grocery store sushi. The second course the study of radish was okay. I was expecting something on the plate to be spicy, but nothing was spicy at all. Also, the butter at the bottom of the dish did NOTHING for the dish. It was a waste of butter. I would have preferred it without. For the 3rd course, I had the prime rib pierogi and the meat inside was fine itself, but the pierogi was a bit hard. I expected a soft pillow/dumpling like pierogi. Some parts of the dish were SO SALTY. I think it was the sauce on top? I'm not quite sure. The 4th course was also SOOO salty. The grilled ribeye was perfectly cooked, but the saltiness of the golumpki was overpowering. Why so much salt?! Lastly, I had the ruffles sour cream and cheddar ice cream which was okay. I'm a sucker for Heritage's Happy Hour Oyster for a while so had to circle back for the restaurant week. The whole experience was giving East meets West as it covers a good range of dishes/inspired cuisine. I was pleasantly surprised with how each courses was planned out, with very balanced flavor combinations, leaving me full but not uncomfortably stuffed. My favorite we're definitely the tuna crudo, braised beef and fiancier, hopefully that make the official menu one day. Overall great experience and the downstairs speakeasy space makes it so fun to eat and catch up. read more

I had such a fun time at the Heritage Restaurant. We had a tasting of four types of their caviar. From left to right, we had the Siberian reserve (Uruguay), Grand Cru, Golden Osetra, and Sterlet. My favorites were the Siberian reserve and the Siberian Grand Cru. They both were very subtle while the Golden Ostera had a buttery taste. The Sterlet was a bit more tart. The owner/chef mentioned that his wife would sometimes pair it with popcorn. Unique experience and would definitely recommend at least once. So juicy and tender, the meat fell of the bone. The Giblet gravy was fantastic, a bit spicy - and I do not care for brown gravy - paired with the dumplings was just perfect. Roasted Corn & cauliflower salad, Sauerkraut Roasted green beans with apples, sheep's cheese and smoked bacon. Smoked oyster & Kim-chi Sausage stuffing. Bread & Chips. Apple Pie made with phyllo dough with caramel ice cream was just the right ending. The dinner came with a bottle of Isle St. Pierre, which I Have not opens yet, and the best Manhattan I have ever had, Smokey, dark, smooth. The short version: it was a blast to dine here, everything was classy and tasteful, and we'll absolutely be back! Cucurocho (happy hour menu) was quite the opener. The three ingredients, each somewhat intense in their own flavors, worked surprisingly well in harmony and in a clear, established hierarchy. The protagonist meaty and nutty notes came from the Iberico ham, which was clearly of high quality. The caviar supplied some brininess, and a whole different profile of umami of the sea. In a fun way, this is a surf and turf with all the luxury and exquisiteness and then some, but none of the excessiveness quite often associated with the concept. The nori serves as the perfect wrapper, not only because its flavors complement that of the other two, but also for its ever so slight leatheriness, which ensures that it endures till the very end, until you've chewed through all the Iberico ham, and therefore provides that seaweed goodness till the end as well. Amazingly, somehow, the whole thing was not too salty. Also, they slice the ham on the bar counter. Always love watching that. Caviar is again used in maybe a similar fashion in the No Regrets Slider, in that it provides some brininess and sea umami to the patty perfectly cooked to medium rare. Little salt is given to the patty, and the result is yet another dish which sounds like it could be too salty, but is not. The duck rillette gave some gaminess to the dish, and it's like a theme here, where they always try to include more than just one profile of umami for some one-plus-one-bigger-than-two action. The (presumably) quail egg was a fantastic touch, because yolks and beef. I had two cocktails, and both times I opted to let the bartender improvise, and was delighted twice. First was a Greek side car; I was too excited about the food and forgot to ask what was Greek about it. It had a transparency that usually isn't associated with side cars. It had opened up flavors, and was, like Asians would say, "not too sweet". The second one was a margarita made with part mezcal and part tequila. Again, the flavors were opened up. The smokiness was slight and just right, and it felt like I could drink another 5 without getting tired of it. Classy and tasteful. The smoked duck and crab egg roll was a whirlwind. I was at the peak of my being lightweight, and it went by too quickly. All I could recall was that it had kimchi which was not too spicy or too sour, it had again all the umami that came from different ingredients that worked in harmony, and it was a bloody steal. 5 dollars for god's sake. The Korean fried chicken nuggets were some textbook cooking. You've heard about the perfect Korean fried chicken that has crispy batter that stays crispy even with the sauce, but how often do you actually have one like that? I had not, until today. The perfect combination of rice flour and corn starch apparently did the trick, as Tiff the client facing co-owner later very generously told us. It stayed crispy till the end of our meal, and we had to pause halfway through it to enjoy the entirety of the lamb and shiitake mandu. Damn! The mandu was perfect. It had the canonical sure-fire combination of lamb and cumin, and somehow I think the lamb was pre-cooked before being stuffed into the dumpling skin. If I'm right, that's not the common practice in Asian dumplings, but it sure is the superior thing to do, especially when it involves things like lamb and mushrooms, which takes on completely different and more exciting flavors when cooked in oil, and/or with spices. Overall, it was a blast. It's hard to categorize this restaurant's cooking, and "fusion" would be a lazy way of doing them disservice. The menu might at first glance seem messy and all over the place, but there are through themes, and I think the creators did not care so much about rules as they did about creating dishes that excite. Even Google was confused, according to Tiff (they're a "Eastern European" restaurant, apparently). That's how you know the people here are having fun. read more

Solid food and drink. We've been here a few times now and have always enjoyed our meal. This is usually a destination if we want good, quality real food in a place where you can feel at home if you roll up in jeans and sneaks. Interestingly, we've never chosen it because of the caviar bar, which is how we first heard of it. We both ordered fish for our mains, me getting the hamachi collar at the recommendation of the chef when I couldn't decide. We also got the beet salad to share and a round of cocktails. If I had one critique it's the service. It's always knowledgeable and friendly, but inconsistent in terms of attentiveness. On our last meal, it wasn't that crowded, but we never actually met our server. We ordered drinks and were told the server would be by, but they were not. Eventually, I think they figured out no one was helping us because every subsequent interaction was with a different member of staff. Again, friendly and knowledgeable, but can be inconsistent. It sounded like the folks behind us had a completely different experience. They were doing caviar and we regularly heard them interacting with their server. My wife and I have been coming to Heritage for about four years now. It's easily our favorite place to eat, relax, and enjoy ourselves. Owners Guy and Tiff Meikle (a true power couple) curate a wonderful experience that's dynamic enough to keep you guessing and consistent enough that, no matter what you order, the food and drinks will be delicious and executed at a high standard. Don't let the "caviar bar" part of the name intimidate you. Heritage is entirely unpretentious with a casual vibe and great options at a variety of price points. The staff deserves the pole position in this review because they make dining fun, interesting, and easy to enjoy. Erick, the head bar tender and MC of private events, has an almost freakish obsession with spirits and hospitality. His passion for what he serves comes through every time we are there. He always finds a way to make you feel special and appreciated, whether that's taking the time to chat with you and share his knowledge or sharing a special wine or spirit he's enjoying lately. The rest of the staff is just as amazing. In our years of going there, it has been, for the most part, the same servers. Each one has the same approach with hospitality: they make you feel like an old friend and guide you through the menu with their excellent knowledge. The attitude, passion, knowledge, and respect the staff has is a testament to the enduring culture Guy and Tiff established. Now, on to the food and drink. The cocktail experience is second to none. Always something new and exciting. Always made with care. I consistently order the "Schrodinger's Bartender" (a dealer's choice drink. No take backs!) and it never disappoints. I get excited to drink cocktails here because I know I'm going to experience a new flavor or spirit that will level up my palate. The wine and beer is also fantastic. The happy hour is always an incredible deal. Just let them know what you're feeling drink wise and listen to them. Believe me, they know what you want The caviar is amazing and well-priced. Fresh pickled veggies. You get the idea. Chef Guy (formerly of Charlie Trotter's) understands how to curate this often-intimidating food and make it accessible. You feel fancy while eating there, but your focus is entirely with the people you're enjoying it with. The oysters are also delicious and a consistent order for us. Fresh, delicious and always served with lovely homemade hot sauce. The rest of the menu is constantly changing, but they know to keep certain classics. The burger and ramen are both steals for the level of quality and always on the menu. The rotating food is a reflection on a specific culture (hence, "Heritage") or the current season. In my entire time trying new things off of these rotating menus, there's never been a miss. Each dish is well thought out and carefully constructed to hit classic flavors while making them modern and unique. You'll be hard-pressed to get a dish here where you think, "I could've gotten this exact thing somewhere else." The desserts are also fabulous, fresh, and on-par with everything else on the menu. Save room. Overall, the experience feels like a master conducting careful experiments; like he's not throwing Hail Marys but scoring touchdowns. My fiancé and I went for happy hour. We were so impressed with the happy hour selections we tried that we ended up ordering multiple dishes off the dinner menu as well. Needless to say we ordered WAY too much food, but everything was well worth it. Our favorites were the No regrets sliders, the Prime rib pierogi, and the Bowfin roe with the house-made bread. I crave that bread every day. Our least favorite was the fried chicken. It was still tasty, but smaller then we were expecting. We did not feel rushed at all and the dining area was very relaxed. It was not too loud and we were able to view the event space downstairs as well. I would absolutely consider hosting an event here. Before we left, I had the opportunity to view the brunch menu and I will absolutely be back to check that out! read more

I went here for Chicago Restaurant Week 2023 (CRW). The first thing I did was "check in" in the Yelp app. When you check in, you'll see a "free shot of our house infused vodka for everyone" coupon. Unfortunately, this restaurant didn't accept this coupon. They said they don't accept, or don't work with, Yelp anymore. They didn't honor the coupon, which is fine, but I find it weird that the coupon still showed up. I ordered off the CRW menu, and there were five courses. The food was fine, but the portions were very small and the service was super s...l...o...w. The slow service was shocking because the restaurant wasn't packed with people. Our reservation was at 7pm. Because I take pictures of my food, let me give you the timeline of our night. 7:12 pm: Seated at table 8:00 pm: First course, Steelhead Trout. It was a small nigiri. 8:17 pm: Second course, Study of Radish. They served this as family style (for our table of 3). I was expecting for each of us to have our own portion since the menu clearly states "[CRW] menu is for each guest to enjoy individually". Additionally, the pickled radishes were served on top of...butter? It was not a soft spread, to spread over the radish. This entire dish was odd and different. We didn't like it. 8:53 pm: Third course, Prime Rib Pierogi. Good, but salty. (My friend ordered the Pork and Shrim Soup Dumpling. It was one dumpling, and there was no soup inside. Disappointing.) 8:53 - 9:17 pm: This was when we made a comment to our waiter about our slow service. The waiter snippetly replied with "I don't work in the kitchen"; but he did offer us free mocktails. We happily took him up on that offer and ordered mocktails. (I wonder how many other customers commented on the slow service since he was a bit snippy. However, I can still forgive him because he did try with the free mocktails.) 9:17 pm: Fourth course, Million Dollar Rice Bowl. Good, but very small portion. 9:35 pm: Mocktail (I'm not sure why the mocktails took this long to make.) 9:41 pm: Fifth course, Ruffles Sour Cream and Cheddar Ice Cream. Surprisingly, very pleasant. 9:52 pm: Check arrives I wasn't expecting to have dinner over 3 hours. Again, the restaurant wasn't packed. The portions were too small. I left still feeling hungry. Very romantic spot with excellent menu. Stuff is super friendly and helpful, walked us through caviar plate and shared details how it is made etc. house infused vodkas are a gem - we liked the one with beets the most! Also smoked sturgeon is a must try! read more

I cannot say enough good things about this place! I first tried it on Christmas Eve and the service was impeccable, still somehow second to the food which I've been dreaming about since then. I had to make the 45 minute drive just to spend time with Leo the bartender along with the amazing owner Tiff that makes you feel like you're walking into your cool Aunts house.. welcoming, involved and (from someone who served in college) it's heartwarming to see the family style appreciation of the staff. The happy hour specials are wonderful. The oysters with the beet cocktail sauce, mignonette, and sweet potato hot sauce are what dreams are made of. Again, I can't say enough good things about this place and if you're anywhere near this area DO NOT miss this absolute hidden gem. (Also there's free parking). read more

DO IT! What a fabulous neighbourhood spot that goes under the radar. We weren't huge caviar fans so stuck to oysters, trout, herring and the spring entrees. What a delight. The pickled herring and smoked trout (never found these elsewhere in Chicago) were exceptional. The cooking throughout was excellent, the service friendly and professional and also delightful desserts (get the olive oil cake). Checked out a new place (to me) for $1 oysters happy hour. We tried several other items on the happy hour menu: Them $12 (chicharrons, paddlefish roe + the beer of the day), Heritage Steak Burger with seared foie gras ($12+8). The $1 oysters were very tasty. We started off with 2 dozens but ended up ordering a 3rd dozen because it was good. I also loved Them. I am not chicharrons type of person but the house made pimento was real good. It's on all day menu for $12, so with happy hour, you basically get the beer for free, which for us was a Christmas Ale. I enjoyed the mood and lighting. It looked like they were sharing servers, although one person was assigned to us. We are the type that need horseradish with oysters and we were charged extra for the horseradish. Dining during happy hour, we had no problem finding parking. Would I go back? Yes, for $1 oysters. Would I try try other items on the regular menu? I'm not sure.
