My friend and I have been wanting to try caviar so we decided to check out Russian Tea Time after taking a look at the menu. We started off with the caviar which came with blintzes on the side, egg salad, chopped onions, and sour cream. We ordered a bottle of champagne that was the perfect combination. We wanted to try a bunch of different items so we decided to split the Russian Tea Time platter for two as we were able to try some appetizers and then the entree plate included beef stroganoff, stuffed cabbage and chicken kebab. Everything was so tasty! My favorite food was the caviar, stuffed cabbage and for dessert we split the honey cake. The inside of the restaurant looked nicer in person than the photos I had seen online. The ambiance was sophisticated and serene. This is a great place to eat before the CSO, which is right next door. It was a cool night so there is nothing better than a cup of Borscht. The potato verenikeis were a good appetizer. The menu has classic Eastern European food. I love a stuffed cabbage roll but theirs is a little sweeter than my mom's Hungarian version, but one is a meal. The classic beef stroganoff met expectations and so did the Chicken Kiev. For dessert we had the Vareniki with cherry sauce. It's a delightful place and there is parking across the street. However, if you have never had R/U food before, then give it a try. Perashki had almost no potatoes in them, very small size, not tasty at all. Borsh was okay, not the taste I was hoping to get. Russian Tea Time is a popular restaurant right around the corner from the CSO that serves food from old Russia as well as tea service. We did the former last week and enjoyed a great sampler of apps and mains for lunch, starting with beef pelmeni, potato vareniki, Latkes, Carrot salad, Beet caviar, Chickpea paste, Tabouli, and Vinaigrette salads. Decided to try out the famous tea time tower, however, I wasn't impressed. The biscuits were probably my favorite thing on the tower, everything else was just underwhelming (taste wise). I found that most of the mini cakes were dry and crumbly. The bread for the savory sandwiches were also very dry. I would definitely not return for the tower as there are many more options in Chicago with better quality selections. However, I would consider returning for their actual food menu. We did try the Blinchiki Combination which was very tasty. We also ordered the beef dumplings which were just what you'd expect. read more

Our server Lazlo warmly greeted us and allowed us to choose a comfortable table. It was a bonus since we were seated during happy hour. We ordered a Ukrainian beer and a coriander vodka martini. Both were unique and delicious. For dinner, we had the Russian Tea Time platter for two. It came with two different courses of platters and was a wonderful way to sample many different dishes. Perfect location near Lake Michigan in case you had a long walk and want to crash this place for some tea. We came for a quick morning bite and were seated quickly. The place is nicely decorated with Russian & Eastern European artifacts accompanied by Russian music. We got queen tea service for 4 people and a separate pot of tea - didn't have to wait long for the food to come out. All the appetizers tasted great, but most of them are not traditional (speaking as a Russian myself) - ie cupcakes, sandwich-shaped food, biscuits that you see here for Thanksgiving, croissant rolls with peppers. They use some traditional Russian ingredients like salmon or egg salad, but that's about it. There wasn't a lot of food either, so I wonder if they brought classic tea service instead of queen. All in all, it was good, and the atmosphere was nice, but the food from tea service was not quite traditional and didn't pack much for 4 people. read more

I've been to Russian Tea Time twice for the Classic Tea Service. It was $44 a person and while I was worried I wouldn't be full both times I've been here, I left full and there were plenty of leftovers. Here are my thoughts. The restaurant is beautiful. I've been here in the summer and the winter now and both times it was decorated beautifully. Even more so now that it's closer to Christmas. There are 2 dining rooms and both were packed full, so if you come on a weekend, book a reservation for sure. The majority of people, if not every table, orders the afternoon tea service. The more popular one is the Classic service, but there is a more expensive service called the Queen Tea Service which has more food at $69 a person. The savories are the highlight of the tower. I could eat so many of those little sandwiches and that delicious cabbage crepe roll. I had no issues at all with the savories. The scones were alright. A bit bland and dry and more biscuit like than scone like, and the spreads it comes with consists of a strawberry jam and a slightly sweet slightly tangy cream of some kind. There are 2 scones per person. The sweets left much to be desired. Most of them seemed store bought and dry. Everything kind of blended together in a sickly sweet-and-dry way. I could barely eat any of this tier. I didn't even bother taking any home. Even with my Earl Grey tea that had been brewing for a long time at this point, the sweetness was still overwhelming. If I could just get a tower of solely the savories, it'd be a winner. The whole thing sure looked pretty! Finally, in terms of service, I understand it was quite busy but our server seemed to forget we exist for a long time. The busboy ended up taking our order because he felt so bad, and then that proceeded to be wrong when our actual server came to check on what he put in. I don't blame him of course he was just trying his best to help us. It seems that they couldn't fully handle the restaurant at capacity. Overall, it was a fun, cute time and the aesthetics almost make up for it, but I go to restaurants for the food and not Instagramable moments, and so I was left a tad disappointed. read more

Having been to the Russian Tea Room in NY, it's hard not to draw comparisons, but judging just on this place - sure, it is cool to have such an option in Chicago. Hard to believe how close it is to the Chicago Art Institute. The salad was excellent--I had it with vinaigrette and hubby had with sour cream (more traditional we were told). We both had the beef stew which was just ok- I was underwhelmed with the fake mashed potatoes accompanying the stew. Tea was good, some of the little desserts were very dry, and nothing special. My friend and i got the tea time order which included 2 teas of our choice, and a 3 layer thing (i cant remember what its called) filled with different finger foods. I am a bit picky so i didnt eat the stuff with hummus and salmon nor avocado. But the rest were very appealing. The tea was really good, they bring you ur own tea pot and sqaure sugars. It was nice you could order dishes on the side of the tea treats so if you're really hungry, you can enjoy tea and a meal. What a great little place to warm up on a cold winter day. This place is literally right around the corner from the front doors of the Chicago symphony hall. The fancy tea service is so pleasant. You can pick from a huge selection of flavored teas. The only thing I would change is that the tea service food has too many sweets and not enough savory. The scones are in the sweet family, and the sandwiches are just like five little bites of actual savory food. Then the desserts are also sweet - so it's too much sweet overall.
