Cinco de aburi! It was delicious and smokey, and also a little spicy.
    Jonathan T.

I was recommended this place from a good friend of mine. She said that it was her favorite sushi spot, and I can see why! This place exceeded my expectations. My family and I came in around 8 PM on Friday Night. The place wasn't too busy, and we waited for about 15 minutes. The interior is very decorated (with posters, signs, etc.) and cozy. The menu is vast and there's a good selection of food. We ordered a bunch of things, but our highlights included: S-class ceviche (it's a little spicy), dinner set, salmon carpaccio, halibut carpaccio, crispy rice spicy tuna, and the tsukiyo special roll. Everything was delicious! We loved the sour note on the carpaccios, the crunch of the taco shells on the ceviche, and the freshness of the nigiri. Regarding the service, it was impeccable! Overall, it was a very pleasant experience, and I hope to come back soon to try more of their dishes!

New favorite sushi spot in Orange County! Sat at the bar at this small intimate restaurant. Super fresh fish, they even had hibachi that was caught that morning. Huge fan of the oyster crudo and agidashi tofu. Staff were super friendly and attentive and everything came out pretty fast. Would definitely come back, with both clients and friends.

I could be biased because I really loved Dai Sushi which was the sushi place before Tsukiyo Sushi. But my friends and I decided to give it a try and unfortunately, it just didn't hit the mark. We ordered the cinco de aburi, uni cream pasta, takoyaki, lion king roll, tsukiyo roll, and the spider roll. The cinco de aburi had a nice peppery taste and was presented beautifully. The uni cream pasta had a sliver of uni - which is probably why it is priced $19.99. It was creamy and quite delicious. I wish I had more of the uni flavor and maybe masago/fish roe to help develop a more seafood profile. The rolls weren't anything that wow'ed us. Out of the three rolls, we liked the tsukiyo special roll the best. The spider roll was our least favorite. The servers were friendly though and even allowed us to have a cake for our friend's bday!

A lot of options here. Even my favorite shishito peppers! We order two plates and that was plenty for the four of us. Service was nice and friendly. Loved the vibe in here. Small but busy with activities. TVs on the walls playing sports. Food was worth the trip. Would come again.

I think I may have found one of my new favorite sushi spots in OC. Genuinely feels like you've stepped into a small, tucked-away sushi bar in Japan. The decor is minimal, warm, and thoughtfully done, and it sets the tone for the whole meal. Service was excellent. The servers were attentive and friendly. What stood out most to me is that this place goes way beyond just standard nigiri. Yes, they have a wide and really fresh selection of fish, but they also offer a surprisingly extensive menu of creative appetisers and entrees, and everything I tried was executed really well. Mentaiko pasta - 9/10 Creamy, umami, rich, slightly spicy, and perfectly al dente. The portion size is great for the price and honestly just spectacular overall. Oyster & clam crudo - 9/10 Extremely fresh and packed with flavour. Not much else needs to be said. The Monk - 8/10 Ankimo served over ponzu jelly. The ankimo itself was super high quality and well-prepared. My only critique is that there was a bit too much ponzu jelly, which made each bite lean slightly salty. Otherwise, the flavour combination was really well done. Nigiri - 8.5/10 Great variety and super fresh fish. I also really liked the garnishes which added a nice layer of complexity to each piece. Only small downside is that a few pieces had rice that broke apart a little too easily. Overall, Tsukiyo is doing a lot right. It's creative without being gimmicky, and still respects traditional sushi fundamentals. Will be back very soon.

    1. I love the variety of sushi that came in the lunch set! I also like that the lunch set came with miso soup and salad as well! 2. The spot has fun casual vibes! The interior is cozy! 3. The staff was friendly and timely with my order! They provided good hospitality! 4. There is only indoor seatings available! They offer table, booth, and counter seatings! 5. Parking lot is huge! Nearby parking can get crowded depending on time and day! Note: They do offer free refill on sodas! Photo: Lunch Sushi Set

Was in the area and saw this place. Plenty of parking since it's in a big shopping plaza with huge parking lot. Great friendly, attentive and nice service overall by the staff. The place is clean, well layout and well organized. You got sushi bar seating, booth seating, and table seating to choose from or let the staff selected for you. Big menu but most are just typical that you see from sushi places. They do have their own special cocktails and plenty of sake choices. It's self ordered (you picked and write down your choices) unless it's special or big dishes. Very easy and quick turnaround. Well presentation and very eye catching, the quality of fresh and good and flavorful. Overall it was good place for sake and cocktails place and good sushi with great service.

Jalapeño poppers $8- ok. Extremely spicy

I was really looking forward to this restaurant due to its high rating on Yelp. My friend had also been here twice already. We ordered the CHICKEN KARAAGE $9, gyoza $5, jalapeño poppers $8, bluefin tuna, salmon, albacore, yellowtail, and shrimp, as well as the Lion King roll $17. The chicken karaage and gyoza were pretty good. The chicken karaage was very fresh and crispy, and the order was large. I would get those two items again. I didn't really care for the jalapeño poppers. As far as the sushi pieces, the bluefin tuna was okay, and the SALMON was the best- fresh and melt-in- your-mouth goodness. The rest of the sushi we ordered was not fresh and very disappointing. The Lion King roll was one of the most disappointing cut rolls I have had. It came with salmon, shrimp tempura, spicy crab, cucumber, avocado, and shredded crabstick on top. The fish was not fresh, had way too much imitation crab, and overwhelmed with mayo. All I could taste was mayo :( Service was okay, although the restaurant was busy on a weeknight and we had to ask our server for napkins and a refill on the water. I will not be coming here again. My friend mentioned the fish was fresh the other two times, agreed it was terrible this time around, and will not be coming back either. Yelp Review #27- 2026

I was SO devastated when I was craving sushi one day and saw that Dai was permanently closed. I'm glad that it was a somewhat false alarm because Tsukiyo is just as good! I knew I had to try it because Dai was my brother and my fav sushi place. Tsukiyo just a bit pricier but still more affordable than most sushi places, especially for the quality. It was pretty crowded when we came around dinnertime, so we waited around 30 min. Luckily there was a Daiso and Hmart around for us to dilly dally while we waited, and they texted when our table was ready. It's a pretty small restaurant with a sushi bar but it was bustling! We started with an appetizer, the brussel sprouts tempura with truffle. It was sooo good-crispy, savory, and the perfect amount of truffle flavor! Since it was a weekend, we also got a small dish of edamame to share. For mains, we both got the dinner chef set, which included a salad, miso soup, and 13-piece nigiri set. The soup and salad were pretty basic and honestly didn't add much value. The omakase was incredible though! Presentation was a 10/10 and everything was so beautiful! Fish quality was fresh and there was a lot of variety! I loved all of the cuts and was very impressed. I hope they uphold the quality and affordability so that we continue to come back!!

I've had this place on my bookmarks for awhile now, and was finally able to stop by for a late lunch on a Sunday afternoon. This place is quite popular - no reservations are taken for Friday-Sunday, walk-in basis only. Luckily there was no wait, so we were seated automatically. But we were here for about 1-1.5 hrs and this place had a steady stream of customers even though it was later in the afternoon. Restaurant is on the smaller side. There's bar seating as well as table and booth seats. They can combine tables for larger parties, which is nice. We had the sushi set in mind but we also ordered additional side dishes since we were fairly hungry. Everything we ordered was pretty good. Really enjoyed the Smoke Bomb and the oyster crudo. Smoke Bomb came on a covered platter and we got a show of the smoke emitting out as the platter was uncovered. Could taste the smoky flavor of the crispy rice as well as the fish and avocado on top. Highly recommend. As for the oyster crudo - $4.99 for each one, kind of pricey but the oyster comes with some jelly on top. Mixed it with lemon juice and it was pretty tasty! And the sushi lunch set - $24.99 (10 pieces and 2 futomaki pieces) was incredibly filling. This came with a salad and miso soup. Out of all the fish, I enjoyed the salmon and yellowtail the most. We also shared a salmon aburi roll, which was tasty and quite filling. Workers are nice and helpful, ambiance of overall restaurant is cozy yet welcoming. If I lived in the area, I probably would be back regularly.

Went for friends birthdays for lunch. Love that they have a lunch special sushi set for a reasonable price. We ordered the Smoke Bomb and you can definitely taste it. The rice was nice and crunchy There were enough toppings for you to get a good amount with every bite. Three of us got the Sushi lunch set which came with 10 premium sushi pieces, miso soup, salad, and two pieces of futomaki. Everything was delicious! And how often are you able to get a premium lunch set on the weekend for $25?? Such a great deal! My friend got the Lion King roll, an order of bluefin tuna and salmon. Her food was really good too! Can't wait to take my husband for a date!!

Came here with friends for dinner on a Wednesday around 7pm and we were seated right away, which was nice. The restaurant itself is cozy, though a couple of the tables were a little wobbly. Service was friendly overall, but a bit forgetful. Our waiters were nice, but we had to remind them a few times about things we asked for like wasabi and ginger. We mainly came to try the $35 dinner omakase, which seemed like a great deal for 12 pieces of nigiri. The value is definitely appealing, but the execution felt a bit inconsistent. The fish quality was okay, though some of the toppings on the nigiri were a little overpowering and masked the flavor of the fish. Presentation and flavors also varied between plates. Four of us ordered the same omakase set, but one of my friend's nigiri clearly was torched while the rest of ours weren't. Another piece that one of us received was really spicy, while the others weren't at all. We also ordered a few other items to try. The soft shell crab to start was pretty good. The soba bouzushi was okay but nothing particularly memorable. We also tried the ankimo nigiri, which unfortunately had a slightly bitter taste. Overall, we ordered a variety of items to get a sense of the quality, but none of us felt particularly inclined to order more. That said, one of my friends got the bento box instead of the omakase and that actually seemed like the best value of the night, $18 for a pretty large and filling bento. Not a bad spot if you're looking for something casual and reasonably priced, but the food felt a bit underwhelming.

    Omakase. Rice was undercooked

Tsukiyo. So excited to try this joint. Located in the same plaza as h mart but more on the Main Street. Pricing so so attractive for omakase Service was just ok. I had to ask for beer multiple times. Asked for wasabi at least 2 times. Uni pasta. Fav dish of the night. Done very well. Al dente. Flavorful. Loved it Sushi. Rice was way under cooked. The fish quality not there. Hard to explain but I felt like it had too much iron or something after. Taste not fresh. I prefer paying extra for better quality

Is it more pricey now than when it was Dai?

Yes. Bluefin tuna is now 9.99 instead of 4.50. Most nigiri is around $7-9. Quality is the same as dai.

After we graduated, we promised to have a little reunion here as adults when we were old enough to drink. This little reunion happened recently. My little sister, who is 17, knew I was meeting my friends for dinner and asked if she could come. Since I knew we would be drinking, I called the restaurant ahead of time to ask if she could sit with us since she wouldn't be drinking. They said no. If we were drinking, she couldn't be there. I thought it was unfortunate, but I told my sister she couldn't come to dinner with us. But what was really annoying is that after we ordered alcohol, our server didn't card us. I went out of my way to uninvite my sister because they said she couldn't be there, and they didn't even check. I thought it was a dumb rule in the first place, but it was really annoying that they didn't even enforce it after I went out of my way to ask. The pork belly skewers were really good. I can see why we used to come all the time as kids. Smoky and crispy. There's a big super traditional looking grill at the front of the restaurant, so I guess they're super serious about their skewers. The okonomiyaki was good too. We decided to try the rose tteokbokki since it was a new menu item, but we were unimpressed. There were barely any toppings inside. We also got the steamed squid, but I thought it was a bit overcooked. We might've stayed a little longer, but the sight of a cockroach climbing on our table sent a chill down our spines. We told a server that we saw a cockroach, but she just stared at us blankly and walked away without doing anything. After that, we had serious issues about the perceived cleanliness of the restaurant and left immediately.  I'm disappointed. In the end, I didn't get the warm and fuzzy nostalgic feeling I was yearning for. I think there were several interactions with the workers that they could have handled better. I cleared my little side quest, so I don't think I have a reason to ever return.

They are always busy and that never bothers us because everyone else knows this is the place to go for fresh fish, amazing service, and friendly staff! We have figured out how to join their wait list without waiting their usual 30-60+ min wait. Even if we have to wait, we will. It's worth it every time! It is the main reason I wanted to post this because they deserve accolades. Leo already had our usual "hot water" order waiting for us at the table and Evelyn is always patient with us when we place several small orders because we like to keep the fish fresh. It's called "tsuika de onegaishimasu" if you care to know haha . The kind of flavor makes you question why you ever spent $8 on yakitori at Osen (no shade, just facts--my bank account has a lil celebration when I go to Takaya instead). The cartilage still slaps. The Orion on draft saves my dry, sad soul. I come here for small victories in life, like "woot I didn't cry this week" or "I made it through Monday with minimal spiritual decay." So yeah--Takaya has been my go-to for joyful moments. This time, though? The food was still great. The service? Shockingly rude. And I say that with all the restraint of a culturally repressed millennial who usually just eats the bad experience and leaves quietly. Now, I'm Japanese. I don't walk into American Japanese restaurants expecting omotenashi to descend from the sky like sakura petals. We're in Costa Mesa, not Kyoto. I get it. Expectations are calibrated. But this? This was rough. Like, rough by American standards. Like, "I've been treated with more warmth at a DMV in NYC" rough. We were rushed to order, like we'd interrupted a hostage negotiation. The tone was clipped. The energy was "please leave yesterday." And then, just to tie it up with a little bow of bewilderment, we were loudly told "two-hour seating, OKAY!" at the 1.5 hour mark like we'd tried to squat there and build a second life. Spoiler: we were not. We were calm, like law-abiding grilled meat enthusiasts. Realistically, how crazy can a few PhDs and my quiet rice plant of a partner be?? It wasn't a language issue. It wasn't cultural misunderstanding. It was just... needlessly unpleasant. And it stung more because I've had so many lovely experiences here in the past. So yeah. Three stars. Because I'm not out to tank a business. The food still delivers. But next time? I'll be ready. Probably with a legal pad to prove we're on schedule.
