AMAZING first experience, I think this may be our new favorite go-to sushi spot. We came for the omakase (Sushi Set Dinner in the menu) and got to try so many other delicious items. We ordered: - sushi dinner set / omakase - Saba Bouzushi - Smoke Bomb - Cinco de Aburi - Tsukiyo salad and we received complimentary edamame and miso soup (soup included when you order an entree) Everything was a hit and I can't decide what my favorite bite was! I never asked why the change in management/name but seems pretty much the same to me except for some price changes. The food is incredible and drinks are fun! Most of the set was very good, I found that all the pieces of sushi were seasoned pretty well and didn't need any additional sauces. Although I was already full, I saw on their regular menu so many delicious specialties!I couldn't resist something crunchy and fried so I ordered the eggplant karaage soon as I saw it. Came here on a Thursday night and was seated immediately at the sushi bar. The restaurant has a few tables and a sushi bar. I was blown away with the quality of the sushi. I asked for recs from the waitress and I was not disappointed. The fish tasted so fresh and everything was full of flavor. I ordered a bunch of items because I needed to try them all. I highly recommend the smoke bomb as an app- filled of crispy rice and has a truffle flavor to it. It was so good. I also got the Roll Royce- it's a Handroll and full of richness umami flavors of fatty toro and uni. It was so good. I also ordered the smoky nigri set- melted immediately in my mouth. I also tried the Tsujiki special roll and it was packed with flavor. I ended up bringing half of it home because I got so full. I ordered the hotate and monk fish sushi- so good. The food is a little pricey depending on what you order, but it's worth the money. The quality of the sushi was superb. They also had Japanese style pasta which I am so intrigued to try next time. I've been coming here regularly since it was Dai and after the rebrand, but I think last night was the final straw. I had an early lunch here yesterday w/ a co-worker, and I've been sick to my stomach since last evening. I spent the entire night burping up the only roll I ordered, and today it ended with explosive diarrhea and vomiting. I order the Aburi Tuna Roll religiously, so I know when something isn't right. It tasted off enough that I noticed it, but I brushed it off at the time. Unfortunately, my body confirmed what my gut was trying to tell me. Beyond that, the place just isn't what it used to be. The service has gone downhill, prices keep going up, and menu changes seem to happen without any communication, so you're left discovering the surprises while you're ordering. It all feels sloppy and disconnected compared to how things used to be. It's honestly sad to see. This place had become one of my favorite go-to spots, but the quality and attention to detail seem to be slipping. Rest in peace to what this restaurant used to be. Hopefully no one else got sick, because I wouldn't wish the last 24 hours on anyone. read more

I had this place in LA & the quality was so good, I was ecstatic that a new location opened up in OC! Food was great, we ordered the Uni pasta, bento box with salmon teriyaki & chicken karaage + Philadelphia roll. We were surprised by the chefs with a complementary seared tuna sushi. Taste was amazing. The uni pasta was buttery & rich; the chicken karaage was crispy & warm; the salmon was sweet & tender. Fish quality is very good. The drinks are delicious. I got an UmeFizz - it's basically a highball mixed with plum but so delicious. I really wanted to like this place but sadly I don't think I'll be coming back because consistency matters a lot to me and that's where they're lacking. When this spot was Dai Sushi, it was my absolute favorite sushi place. It had amazing nigiri at reasonable prices. I was genuinely sad when they closed but when they reopened as Tsukiyo, I had to try it especially since their LA location has really great reviews. My first visit was a weekday lunch and everything was really good. The nigiri was fresh, buttery, and delicious. However, on my second visit (a Sunday dinner) the experience was completely different. I had to spit out both pieces of salmon nigiri because the fish was tough and chewy, which was shocking considering how soft and buttery it was the first time. The Japanese scallop nigiri was another inconsistency. During my first visit, it was so good, especially with the perilla leaf as part of the nigiri. On the second visit, some scallops came with the perilla leaf and some didn't which adds to the inconsistency. I don't want to spend my money at a place where I'm not sure whether my order will be a hit or a miss. I want to be able to rely on my favorite items being consistently good every time. With that said, the crispy squid legs and shishito peppers were really good. I just wish the sushi itself lived up to the consistency I was hoping for. read more

New sushi spot in HB in the Hmart plaza. It has taken over the spot where Dai was but food is delicious. The squid and eggplant karage were fried perfectly and seasoned well! The sushi sets had a nice variety of fish and most pieces were seasoned already and ready to eat without soy sauce or wasabi. The house Nabe comes on a burner and was filled with fish cakes. We got a sampler of smoked tuna complimentary from the sushi chef and that was really good. This was my 3rd trip here since they opened less than a month ago...guess that sums it up. read more

Went on a Sunday night and no wait! You have to follow ig individually to order the dinner special. Located in a plaza so plenty of parking, may be a bit tight near the restaraunt. Walking in its more homestyle small Japanese restaraunt than elegant high class, small seating and intimate (2-4 ppl) - kind of like a small business rather than a chain. I think from a social media, the LA location seems to have more private seating/the floor seats, here its booth/tables. I enjoy the family friendly and quiet vibe and the sushi chefs were really nice and interactive. They seemed chill and genuinely liked the workplace, I saw them chat with each other during rest periods which I feel is a good sign. The female server ( sorry totally missed her name, maybe stella) had greaaat energy, so hyped up, and mentioned promotions. We were checked in on often. I appreciate the effort in what I'm sure was the end of a tiring day. The plating is beautiful. I love the dinnerware, how the flowers are placed, etc. They gave free edamame too. Side salad was beautifully put together and yummy dressing. Soup wasn't too salty and good basic. Smoke bomb- very like smoked salmon forward. Very aesthetic, but the smoking was so intense it took away from freshness of the fish. They fry things really well- perfect crunch and not too oily. Hamachi collar? fritter- not sure if this is on the menu because the chef just gave us it, but again beautifully plated. The crunch was fried perfectly and it gave off very fish and chips vibes with the sauce and the fish inside was beautifully flaky with solid fish flavor Dinner set. Soo pretty. My favorite was (i think) the hamachi; the left first bite because it the most clean buttery fish flavor and set a good tone of yummy. The artistry of the sushi is beautiful and I appreciate that the shrimp head had rice on it so you knew to eat it lol. It didn't even need soy sauce as each bite had its own dab of flavor. The raw shrimp was a little bitter though, and the Japanese uni is more savoury than sweet ocean water like. I do think you need palette cleansers in between each because of the different flavor profiles. My favorite mixes are lemon salt and perilla salt. Overall, the highlight of this place is the plating. Their lights are a bit yellow so it doesn't do the food justice. I really liked the service and ambiance of the place too- like upscale looking food but intimate hole in the wall spot and the staff made me feel comfortable/ gave us space to stay even after the check. They have a unique menu selection so I think next time I'll come try more appetizer/options offered. Its a great place if you are a foodie and like to try different foods. read more

There were two waiter/waitress and given the size of the restaurant, they were very attentive. Presentation was on point. We got the uni pasta, monkfish liver appetiser, yellowtail collar, nabe and ootoro sashimi. I was impressed with the cut of the sashimi, it's fresh, as well as the quality of the fish. Nabe seemed to be the same sauce as the uni pasta-creamy and thick. I wished there were at least some uni pieces on the uni pasta-it was just plain pasta and the sauce. The sushi quality is extremely fresh, and I love that they switch out the fish selection regularly for the sushi set. I also love their uni pasta, and dare I say it's better than the one at Ini?? The servers are also really nice, and if you come during dinner, the meal comes with free edamame which is a nice touch.
