It doesn't get any better than this! ** Details ** My friend Brian was a regular to this spot for over a decade before he left for Colorado. Brian would constantly tell me tales about how awesome this bar is, how classy this bar is, how good the food at this bar is, how beautiful the bartenders at this bar are, how cool the owners are, and how cheap and wonderful the drinks are. Boy, was he right! Came here for the first time about three weeks ago with my friend and he showed me the light. We showed up around 10AM on a Wednesday for some beers and brunch. Mark was our bartender, and he was awesome! Mark and his wife Jessica own this place and are both sweet-hearts. Mark kept us company as we gorged on the delicious corned-beef-hash breakfast which we shamelessly washed down with Coors Lights. Mark explained to me that this place is a family heirloom: his grandfather ran it, his dad ran it, and now he runs it. There is a real sense of pride here: the bathrooms are clean, the tables are clean, the floors are clean, the bar itself is *padded with leather cushion* so your elbows don't get sore. The pool tables are in great shape, and there is even a free-to-use cell phone charging station with cords for the most common smart phones. Mark constantly slang us bottles of Coors, even once throwing a bottle away immediately after opening because "it didn't sound right" when he opened it -- like it could have been badly sealed or something. He immediately followed up with another bottle that did sound right. Perfection! We had such a great time, we hung around until 3PM, ordering lunch at 2PM (chicken-fried steak; also fantastic). Holding back 5th star because I only been here 1x. But its a really good spot to have nearby. Wife and I sat at the bar and the friendly bartender came by quickly. They have a great selection of beers ( both craft and regular). We got to ice cold Stella's on tap and ordered dinner. My wife got the Tubby's burger. 1/2 lb cheeseburger with Lettuce, Tomato and onion with fries and a pickle... $6.00 or so. I got the prime rib special which included a salad with texas toast, a choice of potato (loaded baked for me), au jus and horseradish sauce. The food was just great and a people were nice. They had a few games on the many tv's and great music playing in the background. $45.00 + tip for 4 Stella's and all the food. Really great place and I can't wait to go back again. read more

I wasn't expecting to see a brand new, bright yellow Lamborghini revving its engines and speedily pulling out of the narrow parking lot in front of this nondescript tavern in Whittier, but upon venturing inside for the first time and taking in the ecclectic crowd of metal workers, middle-aged locals, barflys, retirees, and tattooed, pool-playing 20-somethings, it was obvious that Tubby's is a welcoming refuge for all types. Some highlights: an attentive bartender; a digital just-loud-enough jukebox that provided the evening's soundtrack (everything from REO Speedwagon to Daft Punk to Pennywise); five games of pool for $5 (three tables in the joint, and despite a fairly large crowd at times, there was always one table open); huge, comfortable booths which created a decent amount of privacy amidst the pool/darts/drinking action; and the aforementioned ecclectic mix of patrons, who were having too good a time with friends to not make me feel like I was some interloper invading their locals-only vibe (the case at many dives, unfortunately). What can I say about this place? Best place to drink in the Whittier/La Mirada area as far as I'm concerned. It's a small little dive that packs a lot of punch. Surprisingly clean and organized and run by employees that look like ex-convicts; you'll basically be more than wowed. At least I was. Well, I was when I found out that they serve $2.75 GIN N' TONICS. Eff to the yeah. And wait, what? They serve food? Now, certainly it has to be pretty disgusting (on par to the mediocre, Grade B Draft Picks), but alas, another surprise! Not only is it cheap (c'mon, $3.50 stacked Cheeseburger??), it's pretty damn delicious. Add on some fries and you'll walk away with a meal under $5. So if you'll excuse me, I'll be hiding in the corner with my inexpensive cocktail and food. If you find me trashed out of my mind here, blame it on the prices and good company. Cuss yeah. read more

Full bar, really good food. The owners are affable rocker types who can be depended on to supply the name of that band who did that song that you can't remember but really want to play on the jukebox. The patrons tend to be friendly too. Jessica makes a mean martini. Close your eyes and you might think you're at Musso and Frank's. Good selection of beer. These folks are not dialing it in, booze-wise. Unless you're a sports fan, you will want to avoid when there's a big game on. It will be packed. I take exception to Tubby's being called a dive bar. YEAH Tubby's Tavern! I've been driving past this little bar in a small strip mall off of Leffingwell for about 8 yrs! I finally went in with a friend. We love it. It is definately not a place to find a guy or girl! It's mostly regulars. But the welcomed me and Becca with open arms. TACO Tuesdays! Nice people for the most part. 2 pool tables and my fav Mrs Pacman!!!! Jukebox and fun bartenders! Needs to remodel booths. There's not enough seating! Note to self... don't stay Friday nights after last call/pushing you out the door.... the men are really drunk and grabby! The upgrades to this place over the last few years are fantastic. 27 taps of beer, reasonably priced drinks, good quality pool tables, lighting and most surprising (always has been) GREAT food for a small bar!! Even though I'm not a "local" they treated like one. Nice, clean place with a long bar and 3 pool tables! Went with 2 buddies on Tuesday "Taco Night" with $1 tacos(beef or chicken). John got the burger. Looked hand formed with fresh veggies($3.95) and side of fries($1.95). Looked nice. David got 3 tacos and I got 2 beef tacos and 6 fried shrimp(($7.95). Friends had beer and I had a Bloody Mary(don't care for beer much). It was OK, not spicy enough. Very inexpensive menu but food is good. Draft beers were $3.75 each. Not bad. This is a great little place. We live close so it makes it easy to walk. It's very clean. Great juke box music. Food is really good. Prime rib on Friday and Saturday. Staff is friendly and attentive. Yikes, won't ever be back. We are new to the area and have passed by a few times, so we finally decided to stop in for a beer. This was actually our very first time since quarantine started that we have dined out. The patio looked nice and seemed safe so we figured why not. When we got there we were greeted by someone who told us we can sit anywhere. So we sat, and just kind of waited...and waited. No one really acknowledged us for awhile, and we weren't really sure what the protocol is with bars in these times of Covid. Do we order inside since there are no drink menus outside? We saw other tables who had sat down after us getting help, so we figured we just flag someone down and we'd be good to go. We're total no-frills, dive bar types of people, so we didn't mind either waiting for someone or going in ourselves to order, just didn't know what was going on either way. Well, whatever we did to offend the Quarantine and Chill guy must have been terrible, because we just got a resentful and annoyed attitude from him from the moment he approached our table to the time we left, which was much sooner than planned because it was just so awkward there. We don't expect or want ass-kissing type of service, but some amount of people skills helps. We're nice people, we were very polite, left a 20% tip for the dude even though the service sucked so bad. Tubby's was one of the first bars I visited in the 90s, it hasn't changed much other than the wall decor. We normally sit at the bar and order beer and food. They have good prices and a variety of bar/diner foods - I have got the chicken fried steak sandwich the last two times. They serve a crisp pickle on the side of the sandwich and a decent size bowl of country gravy to dip the sandwich in. read more

From the outside this place looks like a locals only kind of dive, but its an "everybody is welcome" kind of dive. The bartender is quite friendly despite his anti social demeanor and the food is pretty damn good for a bar! Very surprising. My friend and I go hang out there every Sunday night. Came here with some of my friends to watch the world cup. It was not overly crowded which was pretty awesome. The lady who was tending bar was very nice. The beer selection was pretty decent. The people there were nice enough to put up with my drunk rants about the tragic loss of Argentina. Overall, it was a great time. Horrible dive bar ever! There was a white female, a short guy with a beard and a taller white guy working the whole tiny bar. All 3 had attitudes. This was our first time and it was extremely obvious these 3 only attended their usual people that frequent the dive bar. Horrible all the way around. We walked out after waiting 15 minutes without either one of those jerks coming to our table. One thing was obvious with those 3 if your not white your not welcomed!!!!! I went here for my first time last night and I ordered 2 jack and cokes and he told me it was ten dollars. I paid with a 20 and he came back to give me four dollars. I gave him two for the tip and proceeded to walk away with my drinks. I thought about it the next day and gave the store a call to verify the amount for the drink and it was indeed just a 10. I just think honesty is the key to business and the bar tender was dishonest. Other than that, I enjoyed myself which is why I won't give a 1 star for their dishonesty. read more
