Decatur Martial Arts Academy felt like the best choice, as the instructors seemed knowledgeable and genuine and the fellow students were encouraging and friendly. 5 years later and the place has lived up to my expectations and then some. Besides the people, the new facilities are great, with changing rooms, heavy bags, and 3 different mats to train on. If you are considering martial arts, the best advice I can give you (that my first master gave me when I moved) is to visit a few schools and pay attention to the vibe you get. Decatur Martial Arts will fare well by that metric and any other.

First, the gym/mats/locker rooms are all clean and in great shape (just to get that out of the way). The class size was around 12-15 students and everyone was super friendly and welcoming. Mohammad is an active and accomplished competitive grappler, and as such, he is the exact type of instructor that you would want to learn from if you're trying to progress rapidly in this sport. He observes all his students and takes time to give everyone something they can adjust or work on to improve their game. It's a testament to his character and the kind of instructor he is that he would take the time to watch me roll and give me personalized advice while knowing that there was no chance of me becoming a regular student in his class. You can tell he enjoys what he's doing 100% and genuinely wants to help you improve. I rolled with a few of the other students and after chatting with them afterwards, I was consistently surprised by how little they said they've trained because they were honestly some of the most well-rounded 'beginners' I've come across. I'm grateful for their flexibility because when the rain caused a delay it was really good of them to offer my daughter a shared private lesson where she was able to connect with another young person who shared her interests in art. That was really amazing to witness two young people on the same artistic wavelength getting lost in their lesson. I've been a student at the Tucker Taekwondo Center for over a year now. Since I am part of the Accelerated Black Belt class, I will soon test for my 1st degree Dan. And I've got to say, it has been an incredibly challenging and rewarding experience. I am in the best physical shape I've ever been in in my whole life. It has been life changing for me and I would recommend it to anyone looking to improve their physical condition. The instructors I've studied with at the Tucker Taekwondo Center, Master Wallace Taylor and Ms. Perez, are extremely talented. Their have an innate understanding and love for taekwondo which they are able to pass on to their students. Master Taylor's method's of teaching taekwondo emphasize correct technique, dicipline and increasing overall strength and endurance. He also offers over all fitness consulting at TTC. Taekwondo has been a really fun way to get in shape and the Tucker Taekwondo Center has been a very cool place to do it. I would recommend it to anyone!!! read more

Since I've started learning Taekwondo with Tucker Taekwondo Center, my life has been changed. I really enjoy Olympic-style Sparring. Master Taylor teaches Taekwondo forms and philosophy in traditional way. I also love their nutrition, self-defense, physical science and mental healthcare instruction VERY USEFUL!. The center is organized in a modern style and the instructors are fit and knowledgeable, true role models.
