The price (esp when it was $40 before becoming $45) is something to boast about in a neighborhood filled with stuffy and expensive barbers. Okay just to be fully transparent this review should be rated at a 4.5 but i couldn't find the way to do half star. The guys did a great job today. I questioned them before I sat in the barber chair as one should do when you have 4a-4c hair. (I have waves to be exact.) I am not at elite level rn..... im retired... But i got a Mid/low drop Fade with a 1.5 (with the grain) on top. I think they did well today for only charging $40 in West Village. As an NYU student I was able to bargain them down to less than $35.......but i advise you not to try this unless you have your ID on you. This only gets two stars, because I got a good haircut here once, but today I went in and this guy gave me a haircut so bad that I immediately had to go out and buy a hat to cover it up. It's not that he was technically a bad barber, it's that he totally ignored me and did something terrible. I went in with hair that had gotten a bit too shaggy and I asked to tidy it up and give it a bit of a trim. The guy said 'short, right?' I said, 'not too short, just a bit shorter.' 'Like mine right?' (he had very short hair) 'No, not that short, just a bit shorter and like, tidy it up a bit.' He then proceeded to shave the sides of my head and when I told him it was too short, he disagreed and gave me what I can only describe as the 'Richard Spencer', then charged me $40. I got four blocks away, wincing at my reflection in store windows and looking like I'm about to march on Charleston and now I own a brand new hat. Now I really do not want to look like a white supremacist, so I'm obviously going to have to get this situation fixed somewhere else. I now hate this place. read more

Extremely unprofessional and unclean! They take appointments and do not keep them. I called up at 7:10pm on Friday and spoke with Greg (the owner) and I would be there in 15 mins. He confirmed he would wait. I reached at 7:23pm (13 mins later) and the salon has a deserted look with only one assistant. I ask him where Greg is and he says his basement flooded in Queens and he left. It wasn't even raining, just a slight drizzle. The salon is extremely dirty with hair lying all around and they don't wash their hands after sneezing or cover up while coughing. Extremely poor hygiene standards! Stay away from this place or you will catch a flu! Greg is on the phone continuously while cutting your hair and speaking incessantly in Russian! Or they're talking to each other in Russian. Now when any barber sees my head, they want to automatically give me the John Gotti Jr look. Comb it all back, the wind tunnel tested look. No! After about a 10 minute wait, a chair is free and I sit down. I tell the barber exactly what I want. He starts cutting away and I'm seeing the wind tunnel. Best cut in town for $25 or $125. I went here once a few years ago - good, basic no frills barbershop - although you do get a scalp message at the beginning. Very nice touch. Gregory is also wiz with a pair of scissors. Although I took a cool pic of razors hanging on the wall I'd opted for his shear-skills which didn't disappoint. We had a good chat about our daughters (both named Julia) and I noted his technique rivaled many more expensive cuts I've had in the past. This is more of a guys shop then "hair stylists" for woman. Not to say they couldn't do a woman's cut just geared more toward a good clear cut for a more then fair price. Total came to $28. I gave Gregory $40 and said keep the change - he seemed genuinely appreciative of the tip. I live in LA but will definitely start coming back with long hair and let Gregory take care of it rather then SuperCuts which charges about the same. read more

I was so hurt and insulted by my experience here that I wanted to share in the hopes of preventing others from going through the same thing. I went into the shop on a Friday night. Four barbers were working on customers. I said hello to the barber closest to the door and was not acknowledged by anyone. Three of the barbers had previously cut my hair and not one said a word to me. Four gentlemen came in after me and were each greeted warmly. When two of the barbers finished with their customers, they took two of the gentlemen who had walked in after me. There was no indication that either had a appointment. At that point, it was clear my business was not welcome so I left. I'm not sure what I did wrong. I had my hair cut at this shop a few times before and never encountered this level of disrespect. I'm not sure if race was a factor or not. However, I am African American and the barbers and other customers were all Caucasian. Regardless, I will never give this shop my business again. read more
