I also stopped by the shop and asked to talk to him (he was not there). He has offered to fire the person and/or compensate me with $60 + a free haircut if I change the review (photos attached). Giving me a bald spot for fun is way too unprofessional for me to consider changing the review. I have offered to point out the guy to Arthur, but I am not asking for the guy to be fired. One of these guys gave me a bald spot because he thought it was funny. He thought I didn't notice and gave me a fist bump with a slight smirk on his face after the haircut. After the haircut my girlfriend told me I was balding, and I instantly realized what happened. The hair grew back to normal in a few weeks. At least one of the guys working here is an unprofessional jerk, so l'd recommend going somewhere else.

And I had to drag him to get what I needed; paid $77 for a very unpleasant experience. Go somewhere else for your haircut in midtown.

I'm glad I booked an appointment and visited Tina Nikolle's Salon. Tina was phenomenal. She gave me an awesome haircut and also trimmed my beard so that I can attend the wedding reception with the best looks! She is very good at what she does and more importantly extremely nice and kind person. Once you interact with her you know how much she loves her job and cares for her customers. One tip to add: If you are visiting for the first time, you may have trouble locating the salon. It's right next to De Janeiro. You have to find a small door on the right side (facing De Janeiro) and then take the elevator to 17th Floor. Tina's Salon is in Suite 1702.

But most of those glowing reviews are pre-covid. I don't know if a lot of their stylists left but there's a notable lack of reviews post-covid. They're kind and the space feels lux and quiet. Problem is communication, went multiple times feeling very whelmed and changed stylist every time. After my third time I think I'm done, I've shown pictures and discussed with them what I wanted but they can never seem to get it right. Instead they default to a generic taper short off the sides and medium top cut, but then why tell me you can do the cut or even have experience with it? Is it my head shape? Face? Am I too ugly? Communicate that to me before you decide to just ignore the conversation we had and just free style. It's frustrating because I am growing out my hair for this cut and they do what they want. I don't want to be rude and stop you mid cut but then why am I paying so much just to be left unsatisfied? Most of the men leaving the place have the same exact cut. Anything longer than a short to medium cut is a no go, those cuts look clean and nice. Kept going in with shoulder length wavy hair just to get butchered every time.

One jackass who charges $100 for a haircut talked about how a real barber (such as himself of course) only does 4 haircuts an hour. Really 4 haircuts an hour? That's 15 minutes each, which after getting in and out of the chair and prepping and combing equals about 10 minutes. You might as well go to supercuts to get that sort of crap haircut. Which brings me to Jerry's! If you are in the city and want to spend 1/3 of what some hipster doofus barber will charge you then check out Jerry's! I used to go to Jerry's consistently when I first started working in midtown but started going to a place in jersey near where I lived at the time, though I still pop over once in a while. If you are in midtown and want a good haircut, this is the place (great if you work in midtown and the boss is giving you crap about your shaggy hair). Mostly older barbers who can do a variety of styles (though I doubt they do shaggy hipster/bieber cuts).They give a very thorough, careful haircut. Usually lasts at least 25 minutes, since they actually take their time and go over it more than once to make sure it is perfect. It is pricey around $30ish I believe, but hey, its in midtown. And of course they use a straight razor, and less importantly but still really cool, they have an ancient hand cranked hot towel machine! P.S. Its very difficult to find (buried in the basement) so ask for directions at one of the rock center info desks located at each entrance.

No stars! To sum up this place. I would describe it as tragic. Tragic to enter what I thought was a gay friendly shop. But, after a month of patronizing said establishment, I had the same barber, Alex, who in my last time there had a gossip lunch with his fellow barbers where he used the N word. I am Black, and with much volubility, I voiced my disdain with his use of the word, as this word is offensive, especially in a presumed professional environment. This happened toward the end of the haircutting, as he proceeded to apologize, which included a mea culpa that involved how he had black friends, and grew up poor (insert other stereotypes). I was disgusted more as I saw the smile on one of the white patrons about to follow me into Alex's chair, and as the other barbers went on about their bad business, though all in the shop heard me read him his rights for his ignorance. Furthermore, in the month that I've been going there, I've never seen a Black person in there. Upon asking one of the European employees who the owner was, and informing him of my disdain with the situation, he smirked, meaning lied, and said he was the owner. He came across as indifferent, and smugly entertained by my complaint. The most important thing I learned from this instance, was that I need to check Yelp in advance. Based off of the horrible and ridiculously bad reviews said shop has received, I recognize that I did not do my due diligence. But, will always do so in the future. This review is less about a racist barber shop that also happens to be all white and gay/straight (yes, racial intolerance sees no sexual orientation), as it is about a tragic group of self-hating, gossiping, disempowered, haters that are headed for a life of pure discontent. They represent what I call the society's tragic lowest common denominator. Unless you're an intolerant gay or straight person do not step foot near said freak show. And read Yelp! read more

Great, great shop! Bright, clean, easy, inexpensive and run by a talented, group of accommodating and experienced barbers. Village Cuts has been a part of my weekly routine since its opening 2+ years ago. I met the guys, Gregory, Dominick and Richie 8 years earlier at another shop and followed them to their new West Village location and couldn't be happier. This full service shop maintains the traditions of the classic barbershop while boasting the best fades, flattops and even the closest shave in the neighborhood. Recently the shop's newest barber, Alex, gave me my first hot-towel-shave and I was amazed at what a relaxing experience it was and impressed by his professional results. It's easy to understand why he's quickly building a loyal following. On any given day you'll find the shop's clientele and their conversations as diverse as the neighborhood itself with college guys from NYU, the West Village crowd and even guy's like me who've left the cramped city for wider spaces but still trek through the tunnel for the best haircut under $20 bucks! As the sign outside states, 'Walk-ins are welcome' and I've never waited longer than 15 min for a free chair. Dominick's been cutting my hair for 10 years and while my travels have taken me all over the world, nothing beats his precision, attention to detail or entertaining banter about everything from celebrity gossip to his latest musical obsession. (You'll hardly notice his half humming/singing once the clippers get going.) Whether you're looking for a quick shape-up or want the full service experience, these guys are ready to help. Based partly on these great reviews, I tried this place. First time, I really didn't like it, but I gave it a second chance. My mistake. (Fool me once, fool me twice...) The quality of the hair cut is poor. They rush and do barely enough to make you feel like you got a good cut, while taking little shortcuts and leaving parts of the hair uneven or untended to. The shop is cute. A good location, with nice furniture. It seems fairly clean. That's the best I can say for it, really. It's like this place aspires to be more than a barbershop, even though the quality of the cut and the service is much worse than an average barbershop. I think what turns me off the most about this place is the attitude. It's clique-ish and poorly run. Hard to get a timely walk-in, yet impossible to schedule much in advance. The barbers seem to jump other people ahead in line, even if you're next and the others don't have appointments. When they're cutting your hair, they are gossiping with each other (about various topics, including clients who just left) and more-or-less ignoring you. The drama seems to be a bigger priority than the hair at this place. If you want a good haircut by reliable professionals, this isn't the place. read more

My boyfriend has been going to the same barber place for couple of years now, when he got home last night he was in the great mood, (i also noticed that he finally made it the barber shop) so i went to ask him what does it have to do with. Apparently it had to do with the haircut he got from this place. The service was as good as usual, everyone was friendly as usual, but the cut that he got from Greg was better then ever. He got there couple of minutes before closing and his hair was a mess, Greg was very cool about him running in the last minute and did a very good job. So ladies and gentlemen, if you want see your partner in a great mood i recommend this place. I was there few times with my boyfriend and i have to say its probably the cleanest and friendliest place in the entire city and trust me i've been to barber shops in the city before, very far behind from how entirely pleasant the atmosphere is in this place. read more

I'll admit that what I do to my hair isn't the most difficult thing out there, but there's just something nice about this place. It's laid back, affordable, and feels kinda like a mix between the old school barber shop where people know each other that's been updated for NYC and the Village. The place is clean, the guys are friendly - wait times generally vary based on who you see, and when you go, but I've never found it too bad. Been going there for 3 years now, and eventually you just get in a rhythm with someone. Personally, I make a visit to Alex every 3-4 weeks; he knows what he's doing, always asks ya first, and is just the epitome of cool/chill. Great guy who's easy to talk to and in short order, he'll remember exactly what you want. Everyone of us has to find our own place to do their hair, but if you're searching for a barbershop, I recommend to all my friends to give this a try. read more

Great Barber Shop... This is the best place to come if you need a regular haircut. If your looking for a salon or to be fawned over because you came in...check that attitude at the door...this is a real barbershop and most of us simply need our hair cut quickly and efficiently. I take the train in from Sayville to have Gregory cut my hair and am always happy with how it looks when he is done. I noticed that some folks are complaining about what they got for a haircut...let me explain this to them...This is a BARBER SHOP...not a beauty salon...these are Barbers...not stylist...if you want a beauty salon and stylist and all the crap that goes with it...go to a beauty salon not to a Barber Shop. PLEASE BEWARE of this SHOP especially this dude GREG. I had the worst experience ever in my life. This guy was not even listening to what I wanted and decided he would do whatever he wants. I wanted a new cut something trendy like everyone has with the side part. This dude messed me up so bad. Everything was so choppy and crooked it was such a shocking experience! He tried doing it so fast it was horrible he nipped my ear a few times, this guy just doesn't pay attention! Mind you the place was empty and I had to wait for him to stop flirting with girls in the street before he chopped my hair. What a waste of money, time, & now embarrassment! Village Cuts is the ultimate place to get a get a haircut. I agree with the other yelpers who say it is very difficult to find a good barber. But, like everyone else, I stumbled across this gem in the wonderful West Village and after the cut, knew I had found my place. Every time I walk in, I'm greeted enthusiastically by everybody. The guys who work here are awewome to talk to and the atmosphere is very laid back. I never get the feeling that I am being rushed out or have ever been dissatisfied with my haircut. I guess the secret is out about this place. I have always liked it's low key nature, but I see more and more people have discovered it. You can still get a same day appointment, though. And I see guys doing walk ins and getting serviced pretty quickly. Ask for Rich if you go. He's consistently does a great job, while some of the other guys are hit or miss. If Rich is unavailable, ask for Greg--I think he owns the place? I used to pay, like, $75 at this fancy place in Chelsea, but frankly, Rich does a better job, in less time, and all for $18. WOW, I started off with Gregory cutting my hair a long time ago at another shop. Then Gregory opened VILLAGE CUTS and I only get my hair cut here. Gregory is a great guy with a FANTASTICALLY TALENTED TEAM at VILLAGE CUTS! Currently, ALEX cuts my hair, he takes his time and does a great job. I am a fan and recommend Village Cuts to everyone. Used to like this place, but, I don't know, last cupla visits left a bad taste for me. I noticed they suddenly put up cameras all over the place. What's that about? Unlike most NYer's, I don't like being filmed. Just made me uneasy. And then some of the staff were blabbing on in some other language, and I got the distinct impression they were making fun of me (the rare female that frequents this place). This barber shop is the greatest in the world. Gregory is a genius with a pair of scissors. Dmitri is a fine barber and a very good riddler; when you come into the shop, ask for Dmitri(Danny) to tell you a riddle - you will not be disappointed. I've been going here for about six months, have tried two of the barbers (Dominic and Richard). After last time, I won't be going back. The cuts before were fine, nothing great but nothing awful. The last cut (earlier this week) was rushed and uneven, and he didn't want to fix it once I pointed it out because he had other people waiting. Gregory gives probably the best haircut I've ever received. I'm very particular about who cuts my hair, and I absolutely trust him. After some disastrous haircuts before coming here, he patiently took the time to fix it over several haircuts. What's also great is he remembers you and how you like your hair cut without having to remind him. The rest of the guys there are fun and friendly to talk to as well. The only place I trust to take my nephew for a haircut is Village Cuts. Gregory has been cutting my hair for over 18 years. I took my nephew to get his haircut this afternoon and he said it was the best he has ever had. Since my nephew lives in North Carolina, we took plenty of pictures of his haircut in the hopes of finding someone in his area that can try to replicate what Gregory did. Highly recommend! read more

I booked a shave as a walk-in right at opening and had the first slot with Suzie and had a close, gentle shave with the right amount of conversation and amazing attention to detail and of course, a new Proraso scent for me to consider for the winter. The jazz playlist is top notch and completes the whole cool, masculine, but approachable vibe. Whenever downtown beckons me, I'll make the time to get pampered.
