The solution turned out to be putting my solid state drive into another laptop several generations newer....effectively salvaging all my data and apps on a newer machine...all this for a few hundred bucks. I took it to Vicki and for a fair price... she retrieved all my old files and replaced the hard drive with a new and better one... made sure that my PC was compatible with Windows 7 before hand (and it was) and put Windows 7 Home Edition on it (my PC originally had XPService Pack 3 on it). She upated all my my drivers and and my RAM and now my old PC works like a charm. I still use it to this very day and I have had no problems with it. Her service is excellent.
