Amazing Mexican spot in Daphne! Found them online and was intrigued by the photos and reviews, so we decided to check it out. Upon arriving we noticed the big parking lot, good location, and when we walked in we were greeted immediately. Inside was nicely decorated, dimly lit, and clean. We promptly got sat on a Sunday afternoon, and quickly got served water, got our drink orders, and food orders put in. The brunch menu is from 12-3, with mimosas and bloody Maria's. The bloody was really nice - could tell it had tequila! Old fashion was nice not overly Smokey. Onto the food, the tamales were some of the best I've had. They were HUGE. They came with birria, great consume, flavorful poblano rice, delicious poblano and corn cream (something of that nature) was so creamy and was GREAT. I couldn't believe how hot and fresh everything was. It was some of the best Mexican I've had. My husband enjoyed his chicken as well - it was tender and juicy, good char on the pineapple too. The portions were huge and we didn't eat it all. Good thing we didn't, the chef gave us complimentary dessert (ice cream because we're gluten free)! It was our first time and we'd love to go back. Everything looked and sounded great. Good margarita options, the flight was ordered by the table next to us! The overall cost for us two, although not the worst, but definitely not a cheap brunch was $110 with tip. Hot sauce was $2.50 on the side. Upon entering, the wait to be recognized is unacceptable. Literally standing there at the entrance looking for an employee for five minutes. Other subsequent customers had to wait as well. The place is very dark inside with the theme of a jungle of plastic plants hanging overhead. There appeared to be a few real plants, but it was too dark to confirm that. The food is tasty, but overpriced for what you get. We had the feeling the money is being spent on the decor or the lease on the building rather than the food. The potential is there for a better deal without the hype. It's a "been there done that " place for me. read more

Tolum is a high scale Mexican restaurant located in Spanish Fort on Hwy 31 near the Eastern Shore Mall. When you walk in, it just feels like you are going to have an awesome culinary experience. We have eaten at Tolum several times and it never disappoints. I typically order the Lobster Omelet, and the wife the Shrimp and Grits. Both dishes are amazing!!! We went back last Sunday after church to have some brunch. I am glad that we did!!! I ordered the Tolum Eggs Benedict and the wife her usual Shrimp and Mexican Grits. The kiddo ordered the Chicken Milanesa Pancake Tacos which is just their version of Chicken and Waffles but with Pancakes folded like Tacos. Again, we were treated with amazing food and service. I made my first visit to this local eatery and had an Outstanding lunch with some coworkers. Service was very attentive. The chips and queso were excellent and my birria tacos were delicious. I like the pickled onions and the dipping sauce. The side of charro beans and the stewed okra were really good. Very nice serving so I didn't leave hungry. This place is sexy and swanky. The food is fresh, well seasoned, and elevated from your typical Mexican cuisine. The service was fast and friendly. The only reason I gave it four stars was because the waiter serving the table next to us was talking negatively about how the menu changes and the management to the patrons. This place is gonna ruin all of the other local Mexican restaurants for us. Tulum truly earns its claim of "upscale" Mexican! This was our first visit to this beautiful restaurant. We love calamari, so we chose that from the great looking list of appetizers. It was a very small serving, but, WOW! It was GREAT! I had the Wagyu burger and as a gourmet burger connoisseur, I can say it definitely impressed. I substituted a house salad for the fries that normally come with the burger. Their blue cheese dressing was delicious and it had some Mexican corn in the salad that really made it pop. The chips are thin and light - just like my wife likes them. Their salsa was excellent and as a bonus - the complimentary chips and salsa also come with a second dipping sauce that is unusual and super delicious. I forgot to ask what it was - but I'm guessing it was some sort of chipotle aioli. I could be totally wrong on my guess, but whatever it is - you've gotta try it. The restaurant is beautifully decorated inside and out. Tasteful, upbeat music plays at just the right volume and service is friendly and professional. Take your significant other here for a great hot date night and you will earn serious brownie points! Note: this place is a little pricey - if compared to other local Mexican restaurant prices - but this is truly an upscale experience. Ambiance, service, food taste and quality really does justify a higher price. I just wish, for that extra money, the serving sizes were a little bigger. If I could deduct a quarter or a half star, I would. But EVERYTHING else about our experience was so great - I couldn't deduct a whole star. The moment you walk inside, it's absolutely stunning, tropical, elegant, and such a vibe. Even the chairs are insanely comfortable. Holy cow. We had a spontaneous lunch get-together and chose Tulum for their diverse and unique menu. Every boxed was checked throughout our whole experience. The service (Victor) could not have been more friendly and helpful when asking about menu items and attentiveness. The owner was super nice and genuinely appreciative of our patronage. The atmosphere is everything I love when dining out, inviting, low lighting, tasteful decor, comfy seating. The food's freshness was glaringly obvious compared to so many of our other local establishments that specialize in lower quality. EVERYTHING our table ordered (four top) was perfection in flavor, freshness, and creativity. The chili relleno had a wonderful picadillo meat filling with the best pepper -to- coating ratio. The birria... omg - the real deal, the way good birria is supposed to be. I had the pink enchiladas because it sounded so different in interesting. It was amazing; light creamy sauce that did t feel heavy and carried a lovely beet flavor but balanced, shrimp perfectly cooked, the whole plate was gorgeous. We also sample the poblano soup which was delightfully different and shared the tres leche cake and bread pudding around the table. I can't stress enough the difference freshness, quality, and pride makes when we're so limited on dining options in our area. This place is a very upscale restaurant. We started with a white cheese dip, delicious! Our server seemed a little preoccupied at first and wasn't all that friendly but he came around. I ordered the beef tacos and my friend ordered the taco salad with chicken. I didn't get a chance to take a pic of hers. They were both delicious! The shell that her taco salad came in was perfection!! It had such a good flavor and crunch!! My tacos came in a flour tortilla which was good but l would have preferred the crunchy tacos. New to the area, based in Daphne we were doing the usual scoping out of local spots and came across this one. The reviews were positive and perked our interest. Having lived in the SW we were familiar with the menu options. I can break it down into "likes" and "not so much likes" .. Likes - nice surroundings, easy playing jazz in the background, clean, upscale look, nice table setting and good hor d'ourves (one of the bright spots). Reasonble pricing for the lunch menu options. The main menu seems to offer a wide variety with prices ave around $20. Not so much likes - we ordered from the lunch option slots and both went for the quesadilla special (one chicken .. one steak). The food arrived after some wait .. and honestly looked very plain on their arrival, no lettace/tomato on the plate just beans, rice and the quesadilla. It would have been nice to see some color on the plates. The spice level was a 2 (1-10 scale) and was very plain generally, not visually inticing or memorable taste. On the drink side my lunch partner ordered a coffee which was luke warm at it's best. Our waiter was fine initially with our order but after that no drink refills, no checkin with us and when we finished we waited .. waited and finally had to chase him down to get our bill to exit. What an amazing dining experience. Not a normal Mexican restaurant. Definitely a step up with great prices, the salsa, cheese dip and their special house dip were all amazing for the chips and the fajitas were the best I've had.......and I've tried hundreds. Now the service was beyond spectacular with the owner Armando stopping by and our waiter Victor made sure we had everything we needed to ensure our experience was second to none. So we spent the night in the area before our cruise, but if you're just passing through or staying in the area, be sure to check them out. You won't be disappointed. My neighbor mentioned that one of my favorite new local Mexican restaurants also has amazing hamburgers. I rarely eat burgers because I'm supposed to avoid gluten ( so please don't tell my doctor I cheated and it was so worth it!!!) Oh my gosh!!! THE Tastiest hamburger Ever!!! Absolutely juicy it was full of fantastic flavor. I highly recommend it. I sat at the bar and chatted with the bartenders Eaton and Jonathan while I devoured my delicious meal! Naturally the service, ambiance, cleanliness, and everything else was perfecto. I should mention I'm an iced tea snob, my tea was also great. I'm pretty thin but if I ever get fat it's Tulum's fault they are only 1/2 mile from my home. That's not even fair because every thing on the menu is awesome. read more

While visiting family on the eastern shore, Tulum was suggested and so we had a table of 5. It is very rare to visit a new restaurant any more to find a place that surprises. Everyone liked what they ordered and personally, I loved the vegetarian fajitas entree I ordered. As a practicing vegan, it wasn't totally vegan because of the cheese. It was mostly vegan, so it was acceptable because when I travel or eat out at him, I expect that I can't totally control what's available for me to eat, so I didn't worry about it. When we travel back here again. we will definitely come back to Tulum. I just hope they can continue to do what they're doing, because many restaurants don't seem to be able to keep up their high standards over time. Thumbs up! read more

I reviewed Tulum 9 months ago. We ate there again last Friday night. I'll review the food first and the experience after. The chips, salsa and aioli were delicious and a welcomed change from traditional Mexican salsa's. We ordered the Queso and Queso with Chorizo- both very delicious. The margaritas were beautifully presented, but the 3 at our table that ordered them felt they were too tart. I had the Xaman Rolls (Taquitos) stuffed with Burria for my dinner. They were absolutely perfect. The meat was very tender and flavorful with beautiful garnishes and a lovely presentation. My husband had the steak Chimichanga and said it was very good, but was disappointed that it didn't have much steak in it. Everyone else really enjoyed their meals. This is a very good high quality restaurant. Obviously it's managed very well and all the staff were very pleasant and very hard working. We did not have a reservation, yet the staff was very accommodating and literally created a space for our family of 6. We were surprised at how they adapted to the continual flow of customers coming through the door. They had MANY special events, mostly Birthday celebrations (every few minutes), which became humorous with all the available staff rushing to join the celebratory (extremely loud) music. We were happy to join in the fun. It did make for a very loud background which made it hard at times to talk. This is a lovely restaurant and highly recommended. Try to enjoy it when it's a little less busy. But they handled the rush on a busy night very well. Overall very happy with our evening! read more

Let me tell ya...I lived a good many years in Texas and traveled all over the state. El Paso, San Antonio, Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Houston and Beaumont. I have had my fair share of Mexican cuisine and Tulum is unlike most Mexican cuisine establishments. The atmosphere is extremely nice and the host was exceptionally friendly. The food is not traditional fare and presentation, it is unique. You can tell the quality from the first bite. The chile relleno was the best I have had outside of the great state of Tejas. Everything we tried was outstanding. It is so good that we are going back this afternoon even though it is 35 miles away and 45 minutes to get the there...so you can guess I think it is worth the effort. You should plan a nice chill evening with a loved one or stop by for great food anytime. The price is more than your typical Mexican establishment but the quality is superb . Enjoy read more

What an awesome addition to Spanish Fort! Talum is an upscale Mexican restaurant that has delicious food, ambiance, great customer service and beautiful decor. Our group of friends from the local gym met for lunch. Armando, owner/manager greeted our table after we were seated. The menu has entrees to please most every diner. Our group enjoyed hamburgers, chimichangas, shrimp pasta and steak. A torched chocolate cake was shared with the group for dessert. The ribeye steak was finished with a torch at the table. Presentation was breathtaking. The aroma of the fresh rosemary filled the air. We all saved room for a taste of the showstopper dessert, Torched chocolate cake. The interior is very pretty and more upscale that your typical Mexican restaurant, so the atmosphere is welcoming. Our service, Jonathan, was attentive and pleasant to interact with. Their menu has standard Tex-Mex and Mexican offerings along with American fusion dishes as well (burger, pasta, etc.). They do provide tostadas with salsa and a mild aioli sauce which were good. We had their birria and tinga tacos. I chose the corn tortillas which were blue and complimented the chicken nicely. My husband chose the flour tortillas and really enjoyed the flavors as well. The poblano Mac n cheese was an unexpected side but we really liked it. Their Mexican rice was well cooked and very flavorful. The drink and dessert menus looked very inviting so those will be something to look forward to on our next visit! The menu is a little pricey but not unexpected given the overall vibe of this place. Arrival & Service We arrived around 12:40 pm on a Saturday and were seated immediately--a nice start. Our server took about five minutes to bring the drink menu and our waters, which was fine, but he seemed a bit distracted throughout the meal. While he was friendly, there were moments where he seemed scattered, though he was attentive enough to provide us with complimentary tostadas, salsa, and chipotle aioli to start. Drinks & Timing I ordered a piña colada at 12:55 pm, and our main entrees were ordered at the same time. Both the drink and entrees arrived promptly at 1:05 pm, which felt rushed. I had hoped to enjoy my drink before diving into the meal, but having them served simultaneously took away from the relaxing experience I was hoping for. The piña colada itself was delicious and well-presented, though I couldn't really taste any alcohol in it. Food I ordered the classic taco salad with shredded chicken ($17). Unfortunately, this was a disappointment. Despite Tulum's emphasis on fresh ingredients, the salad didn't live up to my expectations. For the price, I was expecting a larger portion and more generous servings of chicken; I wouldn't order this again. Carson had the Pastor-style chicken ($20), which came with grilled pineapple, onion, and a side of rice. The food runner poured queso over the chicken and rice upon serving, which was a nice touch. Carson enjoyed the dish and mentioned he'd gladly order it again. Wrap-Up We left at 1:35 pm after a slightly rushed meal. The service was friendly but could be improved in terms of pacing and focus. While there were bright spots like the piña colada presentation and Carson's entrée, the experience left room for improvement, especially considering the cost and expectations around freshness. Marie was a fantastic server. Armando chatted with us quite a bit about this year old restaurant. Fantastic food. Okra sofrito is outrageously comfort food you didn't know you needed. It was our first time here and I ordered the 3 taco plate. The server said we could choose 3 different tacos if we wanted, so I chose 1 carne asada, 1 chicken tinga, and 1 mahi mahi. The mahi mahi was so dry an not edible. The server did not inform us that they charge you the price of the most expensive meat as if I ordered 3 carne asada tacos. There is a clear difference in price for chicken, fish, and carne asada. I mentioned it to the manager and he said that is how they do it. I also mentioned to the manager how the mahi mahi was so dry and not edible and he said he would let the kitchen know. Ummmm OK! So be aware when the server recommends the 3 taco plate with 3 different meats that you will be charged the most expensive meat price. I would not get the mahi mahi tacos again.... no bueno! read more

Arrived at Tulum around 1:50 PM on a Sunday. The outside of the restaurant was very clean and inviting. As we entered the restaurant we were greeted at the front door by the hostess. The interior of the restaurant was very upscale, and the lighting was purposefully dim. We were promptly seated in the rear of the restaurant towards the bar area. Less than three minutes after we were seated we were greeted by our server. She was very friendly and knowledgeable. We ordered two waters with lemon and a queso cheese dip. While we were waiting for our drinks and appetizer I couldn't help but notice all of the TVs around me. This was a negative for me, only because it was projected to customers that the restaurant attempting a high class, upscale dining experience, however the large TVs gave a sports bar/typical low end restaurant vibe. Also, something else that caught my ear was the music selection. Couldn't help but to notice Ariana Grande playing over the overhead speakers... I would expect a resturant that is aiming for a high class dining experience to play music that would be expected for those type of customers, like acoustic music with no singing. The server brought us three tostada shells, a bowl of house salsa, and house chipotle dip as a free appetizer. Shortly after our cheese dip with house made tortilla chips and our waters arrived. The appetizers were wonderful, no complaints. Cheese dip was hot and fresh, you could tell that it was house made. The water however was terrible. It tasted of sulfur/mineral water. I don't know what the solution to that is, but they will have to address it soon, especially with targeting high end customers. We ordered the Birria Tacos, with poblano macaroni and cheese, and refried beans. We also ordered Birria Ramen noddles, with a side of Okra Sofrito. The main dishes were fantastic. They were delivered steaming hot, and everything tasted as if fresh ingredients were used. Food was excellent, friendly staff, attentiveness, and knowledge of the staff members 10/10 Water was a huge point deduction. 1/10 TV's and music selection was also another large point deduction. 5/10 Overall, I rate this resturant 7.5/10.
