Supremely underwhelmed with the food this time but the service was still excellent. The restaurant was clean and well lit. As a family, we came to the Spanish Fort area during Hurricane Ida evacuation in 2021. The food was extremely good and plentiful. Fast forward to 2026, we revisited here and ordered the same seafood plates and was surprised how much they've reduced the amount of food. In 2021, I remember we had 3 catfish filets, imitation crab cake, hush puppies, numerous shrimp, and oysters and everything was hot to taste. It was so much food we needed take out boxes. This time, we were only given 1 catfish filet, four boiled shrimp, 4 fried shrimp, 3 oysters, another imitation crab cake, two cold hush puppies and a plate full of cold French fries. The sides were meh, with canned turnips that were so cold that I couldn't eat them and pretty decent baked beans that were actually tasty. Everything was seasoned very well but it certainly was not worth the $30 price point per person. There was a noticeable difference between what we experienced in 2021 and now. I've eaten at several David's locations and this is not the best one. It was ok, a little overpriced. The other locations give you coleslaw as soon as you sit down at no charge, and a glass of tea cost me $3.50. I had the three piece catfish fillets, coleslaw, and fried okra. This was my first visit to David's Catfish House, and it was reeeally delicious! We got coleslaw for the table after ordering, and while it was really good, I doctored mine up with salt and pepper to cut down on its sweetness. My catfish filets were fried perfectly; so crispy and the perfect size. I don't like really big catfish filets, but these were PERFECT. Probably the size of an average man's hand. The cornmeal gave the most perfect contrast to the almost-sweet flakes of the catfish meat. And those cheese grits were smooth and creamy, my goodness! Lastly, my hushpuppies. Sometimes--SOMETIMES--hushpuppies are too dense or too dry, and this was NOT the case here. They might have been the best dang hushpuppies I've ever had, with kernels of whole sweet corn dancing throughout. Y'ALL. You have GOT to come here and try the fried catfish. I'm ready to come back and have some more. Also, I ordered the 3 filet plate at $14.99, but IF you finish that and are still hungry, you can go ahead and request more catfish and bump the price to "all you can eat" for $17.99 instead. The waitress was extremely polite and friendly. The turnip greens and shrimp were leftovers from lunch time. The greens were cold and sent back twice I noticed a couple just picking over their food. Have always had great experiences here. Been to a couple parties as well and service has always been very prompt. I tend to stick to what I know here and that's the firecracker shrimp and coleslaw both of which I highly recommend. Very spacious seating area except for the back room where the host parties. We called prior to our visit to inquire about cross contamination as I have a severe shellfish allergy and were assured they do not fry anything else in the same grease as the shrimp. I felt safe after that assurance and my husband was looking forward to some fried catfish. I ordered chicken tenders and fries. I knew with the first bite of chicken it had been fried with shrimp so I asked our waitress about it. She went to the kitchen and came running back out telling me not to eat it. She said typically they do not do this but for some reason it had happened tonight. I was already feeling the effects of an allergic reaction. David's Catfish has been a favorite restaurant for many years. I follow them on Facebook and saw their post about having curbside pick up as well as selling frozen entrees to prepare later at home. I called ahead for my order of the family feast catfish filet dinner which consisted of catfish, hush puppies and 2 sides which I ordered double cole slaw as theirs is the best!! In addition, I purchased a pound of Monroe thick sliced bacon and a 4 lb. box of frozen catfish filets to prepare at home later. The restaurant was very appreciative of the order and my husband and I enjoyed our delicious meal picnic style in our vehicle. We drive by David's Catfish House every day and finally got around to trying it. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to our anticipation. There isn't anything "bad" about this restaurant, but nothing stands out. The catfish is perfectly cooked, not too crunchy, not greasy - but the seasoning was nothing special. My son's popcorn shrimp were good, but we've had better since we moved here. The slaw was sweet, VERY sweet, too sweet for us. It's a little expensive as well, $12.99 to $15.99 a plate - yikes. Had a great dinner. When we sat down they brought us bowls of coleslaw for free while we waited for our food. We all ordered the all-you-can-eat shrimp and catfish special for $16.99 The coleslaw was the best I've ever had. Very creamy and chopped fine. The greens were good. The cheese grits were creamy and tasted like they were made with gouda cheese. The popcorn shrimp was more like small shrimp, not traditional popcorn size. I liked them being bigger than expected. The catfish was a little dry and could use more seasonings mixed into the batter. It was decent fish, but not the best. I thought it would be better being that it's in the name of the company. The sweet tea wasn't too sweet! and had a great tea flavor... the best I've ever had and I'm picky on sweet tea. They brought an entire pitcher so we could refill at will!! Loved that idea. My husband and I wanted fish tonight for our friday Lenten dinner. David's is right down the road from us. Given the craziness going on in the world right now, this place has stepped up and is still giving quality service and phenomenal food. I called my order in. The lady who was running orders outside was completely slammed. I went inside , paid and they asked what kind of car I was in. I told them and they ok. We will bring it out to you. I went to you express site today to get food, but after 15 min in the drive through line I walked inside to make a to go order and was told only the drive through was open. I understand not having your dining room open to sit down guest due to COVID, but there is no reason to turn away walk-in, to go orders that could prevent a 10-15 min wait in the drive through; especially when your main sit down location is up and running for guest to come and sit down. It wasn't a lack of employees, there were 5-6 people working back there. Again, I love the food, and have always had a good experience at your Spanish Fort location, but I don't love it enough to wait in a drive through roughly the same amount of time it takes to get it at your sit down location. read more

Wife and I came and selected a table. Waitress came over and we told her that there would be three. She brought another menu and asked if we were ready. Our third person was our grandson who wasn't there yet. He came (six minutes total time from our arrival) and two minutes later she came again and asked if we were ready to order. Really didn't have time to read the whole menu. I saw a shrimp basket, so I ordered that. The basket came out hot which I really like hot food. The shrimp seem mighty small but the quantity was there so I ate them. I ran out of tea and she didn't come by, so I got up and got it myself from another waitress. Afterwards I found out that those small shrimp was popcorn shrimp which I hate. I asked the cashier about it and she said I had to turn the menu over to select large gulf shrimp. My pee is that the shrimp basket should have been noted that the shrimp was going to be popcorn shrimp. I still left a tip but not my usual amount. Another item on my list was the floor. It was black and slippery which indicates it hasn't been cleaned in a few months or maybe years. Have to watch to make sure one doesn't slip down and get hurt. I noted this to the cashier, but I think it fell on deaf ears. I don't think I will be going back to this place and if I do if the floor is still black and slippery, I will turn around and get the hell out of there. read more

I was raised in the land of catfish and BBQ, and those two things typically aren't done right around here. In fact, this is one of only two places I would even order catfish. We decided to go on a Tuesday night. We pulled in and noticed the parking lot was packed. We were able to get a table, and the waitress came pretty quickly to take our order. I ordered tea, and she left the pitcher on the table. I like that. I was afraid to order catfish, so I had a hamburger steak with fries and cole slaw. My hubs ordered the 3 piece catfish with turnip greens and cheese grits. My hamburger steak was good, but I will order catfish from here on out. I had a few bites (cough, cough) of his. Okay, I ate almost a whole piece. They definitely know how to fry catfish! The cheese grits were good and the turnip greens tasted just like my papaw made them. The hush puppies tasted homemade too. I love the vibe of the place and those cedar or cypress walls. They even have a little patio outside. It felt like a catfish place from back home. I'm usually Not one to knock a place, but this was a mediocre dinner. This is a catfish place so order the catfish nothing else. The Cole slaw was the best thing in the dinner. The shrimp had an ammonia aftertaste so I was a little anoxia hoping I wouldn't get sick. The fried oysters were cold and flavorless. Turnip green were ok a little on the bitter side.' Hush puppies were good and a little sweet. We didn't bother with dessert but they offered cheesecake and key lime pie. They also serve gumbo and crab bisque. You can order the gumbo and crab bisque by the pint, quart, gallon. Didn't try those but that is what they offer. Iced tea is served.by the pitcher to wash it all down. Waitstaff is nice though, that's why I bumped it up to a 3 star. read more

When the area heard that David's was returning to Spanish Fort after being gone for years there was much enthusiasm! They did NOT disappoint! Their Cole Slaw is the best in our area! The service is great and the servers bring you a pitcher of tea so that you never go thirsty (I love this idea)! The catfish is fresh and cooked to perfection no matter if it is fried, grilled, or blackened. The grits are cheesy and creamy. The greens taste like the angel of my grandmother is in the back with her pressure cooker! Their Key Lime pie is spot on! As someone who has watched their current location change owners multiple times, it is incredibly satisfying to pass a crowded parking lot everyday! The renovations and smoke smell removal are truly impressive. I am thrilled to have David's back in town! read more

Heard so many good things about this place so me and my family go for dinner. Sadly it was pretty terrible from the service to the food. Waited hour and half for food, and when came out, we were missing most of the sides ended up waiting another 20 mins just for the sides. Gumbo was $7 for the tiniest portion I've ever seen it also had no resemblance of gumbo. Shrimp was fishy tasting, the turnips/greens were clearly from a can. Tried this place for the first time. Overpriced for what you get. Seat yourself. Wait a while for the food. Gumbo had shells in it and the portions were very, very small. Catfish Poboy had one sliver of lettuce and not enough tomatoes and a lonely sad fish of fish. The establishments needs to take lessons from the one in Milton. FL.
