Pleasantly surprised with this little hole in the wall. We were in the area and we're getting hungry so we decided to stop by Turkish kebab house. It's such a small space with only a few tables, but the service was super fast. We tried the labneh to start, which was really good. We shared the traditional lamb shish kebab platter, which came with a salad and rice. Then we got a dish with mixed meat and eggplant which was very flavorful. The food was enough for the both of us and we even ended up taking some home. The cashier was also our waiter, and he was super kind, especially with our kid. They had high chairs, although the highchair was definitely loose and needed tightening. It seems like most people will come here for takeout, which I would definitely keep in mind and do for the future. read more

First time. We ordered the appetizer sampler plate which has hummus, several kinds of baba ganoush, stuffed grape leaves etc. Also got the falafel. All were freshly made and so delicious! Prices were kind of high but the quality of food was great so it's justified. Service was a bit slow but there was only one server working the tables during lunch time. Located deep in the heart of Pittsburgh not too far from the university, lies a small Turkish restaurant serving up some of your more typical Mediterranean affair as well as classics for the more inclined, such as Iskander kebap. Service wise I can't speak much on as I did takeout but the food was ready when they said it would be, it was hot on pickup and they gave me no trouble with paying and going. As for my chosen dish the Iskander Kebap, it is a very decent version of the dish. I could definitely use more of the smokey notes from the meat, or bright and savory ones from the sauces, but you're not going to leave her dissatisfied. I don't know what the competition is like up in PGH, but if you're close by here, I don't think you'll regret checking them out. read more

Nice little unassuming place. We ordered takeout, and the overall experience was excellent. The online ordering page worked well, and provides a confirmation when the restaurant has accepted the order. The menu includes a nice collection of vegetarian appetizers (hot and cold), but there are fewer vegetarian entrees. That's fine for us. We ordered a wide range of vegetarian appetizers, a salad, and a vegetable kabab. That was plenty, and everything was served with a big pile of extremely soft flatbread. The hummus and baba ganoush were flavorful and nicely textured, and the eggplant spread was an interesting experience of mostly just roasted eggplant. The Mediterranean salad was fine, but the lettuce was already starting to wilt by the time we picked up our order. The falafel were crispy and well presented with a spread of hummus and some salad. The lentil soup was nicely done, but primarily as an understated accent. All told, this was a nice destination. It's a small space, so it might work out better for takeout and that's okay. Well, years after trying out Selami's, I'm finally fulfilling my promise to myself to try this spot out. To my knowledge, they are owned by the same people and the menu is the same; this is just a different location. Still, I got to try out a bunch of new items, some that I haven't seen in any other restaurant in Pittsburgh. I got to try out the Mersin Tantuni wrap, chicken Adana wrap, 2 side sauces, and their rice pudding. Starting with the very familiar, the rice pudding was great. Super creamy, a nice dusting of cinnamon on the top without it being overwhelming. Reasonable portion. Nicely packaged. I liked it! The chicken Adana wrap was also so, so good. This was my favorite of the 2 wraps. The chicken is perfectly cooked and perfectly seasoned. Really enjoyed it. This was my first time trying the Mersin Tantuni wrap. It's finely mixed meat with vegetables in a wrap. The wrap itself is unique -- not really like pita, and more like a paratha if you're familiar with those. The beef is cooked well and definitely has quite a kick of spice to it. Not a ton of vegetables, but still, very nice wrap. It was great to dip the wraps (especially the spicy beef one) in the yogurt based sauce. This sauce was more liquidy than other yogurt sauces I've had at places, but still good. The other sauce was also pretty tasty and mild. All in all, this is a great place. Lots of delicious food options here, and the food is definitely high quality. read more

Turkish Kebab House is a cozy, warm little spot in Squirrel Hill. They have gorgeous rugs on the walls and runners on the tables which create an authentic feeling ambience. Turkish tea was delightful. Hummus was delicious. The pita came out nice and warm. The lamb gyro I ordered was disappointing. Meat was dry and not very flavorful. I've had much better. I didn't try the kebabs, those might have been 5 star. For soups and baked goods, I'd say it is very solid Turkish food with some stuff you don't usually see on US menus, but also that it's not exceptional. Tripe soup: tripe was cooked perfectly and not too smelly, broth was thin but did what it needed to. Lentil soup: very different spices than the Levantine style, but rich, smooth, and very Turkish-tasting. Borek were nothing special, too fried for my taste, but that might just be how the "cigarette-style" is. Pita was fresh and tasty. read more

I started with baba ghanoush which was wonderful. Not as tart as the Syrian version and not as earthy as the Greek type. The accompanying bread was superb, warm with a little char. The bread was so good. I had to get some to go. Main course was Mousaka. Different from the Lebanese version I'm used to in that it was like a stew rather than a baked, layered dish. Very delicious. We were in Pittsburgh this weekend, and were looking for a place to eat on Labor Day. After going to several restaurants and finding them closed, we happened upon the Turkish Kebab House. What a discovery! We started with Hummus and pita bread - the Hummus was lusciously creamy, with a nutty, tangy taste. However, good Hummus needs good pita - and the Kebab House's pita was so fresh and fluffy with a delicious wheat taste. We ordered the Falafel Plate next, which came on a bed of fresh salad greens and a little hummus. I really like falafel and I typically go to Taim on Spring St. every other week. The falafel here was every bit as good - with a wonderful crunchy texture, and a rich, grainy and savory taste. I had the Chicken Kebab for my main course. The marinated chicken breast was so flavorful and moist - it was on a bed of rice and salad greens. If I make it back to Squirrel Hill someday, I'll be back at the Kebab House! read more

We happened to try this place while all other options to get a take-out were exhausted during our brief stay in Monroeville, PA. Since the reviews were brilliant and Mediterranean food rarely disappoints, we did not mind the 30 minute drive to get the food. Ordered through GrubHub and went to pick up the food which was ready on time! The location seems to be very prime (am not a local, and it was late night so it's just my guess) and buzzing with people. When I went to pick up the food, the food was handed over a counter, behind which seemed like a partial open kitchen and the kababs were nicely marinated and skewered on, ready to grilled for next orders. I could say that the kababs were going to be tasty just by looking at the marination (I was actually drooling from inside :) ) Ok, now to the point, the kababs all of them (lamb shish, chicken, adana and falafel) were perfectly grilled, superbly seasoned and came with a generous portion of some aromatic rice and lettucy salad and a couple of sauces. If ever am back in town I'll surely not leave without having their kababs, so that pretty much sums up my experience with Turkish Kabab House. This was not our intended location for dinner. We were all starving as we hadn't had a proper meal since some morning pastries and wanted to go to the Squirrel Hill Cafe, but they don't let patrons under 21 inside and we had our kid in tow (thanks for not posting that info online btw!). We tried the Lebanese place and they had a plumbing issue; we tried the Thai place but it was closed. We would have left to go somewhere else but our kid was already beyond hangry, so we threw our hands in the air and went in here. The woman working (the only staff member in the restaurant other than a single cook) was unfriendly at first, but our daughter bewitched her, so she gradually warmed up to us. We started with the cold mezze platter, and we have to admit that we were highly skeptical about the quality of the food here, but this was really not bad at all. The hummus and both eggplant dips passed our Mediterranean snob test, and the tabbouleh was also good, as was the bean salad. They could have spared more than two dolmas however. Our daughter is obsessed with lamb so we got the shish kabob and lamb gyro mix as our main to share. The gyro meat was OK but the kabob was tough as hell (marinade was nice, however). That came out with a lame salad and some standard rice. The pita here is neither fresh nor impressive. It wasn't what we wanted for dinner, but it got the job done and with no drinks, the price was right. Put it this way: we went here, but you shouldn't have to. The falafel wrap was *so* good. I was apprehensive when I saw the wrap wasn't a pita, but it was perfect from the first bite. The falafel was fresh and the perfect mix of soft and crispy, the tomatoes were fresh, and lettuce was crunchy. And it comes with a spicy sauce which is perfect for pouring or dipping. 5 stars all the way. Honestly, everything we ordered was delicious, well seasoned and well balanced in flavor. And the best part is that the food was kind of healthy. We ordered three dishes -- mix grill combo, cigarette borek and stuffed grape leaves. If you are not sure about which meat grill to get, then the mix grill is great because you get to savor different kinds of meat. Everything was delicious. Even the salad bit. Usually I find the accompanying salad a bit boring but the salad bit at this restaurant surprised me. If you are looking for something salty, creamy yet crispy and warm, kind of like a salty version of a crab rangoon but with less stuffing then the cigarette borek is it. VERY disappointed. I was super excited to come here because the reviews looked awesome. We came for dinner and were immediately seated. Our waitress comes over and literally doesn't even look at us, she is looking off into the distance asking us what we wanted. I asked if I could get the mixed chicken and lamb gyro and she responds with "No chicken." Okay, thats fine...I get the lamb gyro instead. I don't think she said anything else to us. We get our food and I think it was just sitting in the back for awhile. The meat wasn't even that warm, lukewarm would probably be a good description for it. My boyfriend got the mix shish and adana kebab. He also said his food was kind of lukewarm in temperature. Okay...I'm super hungry so I start eating and about halfway through I started to feel nauseous. Usually I have a stomach of steel, I swear, but this made me feel sick. I ate about half of it and couldn't finish because I felt sick. At this point, I also wanted a napkin but our waitress was nowhere to be found? I saw her put her jacket on and disappear for awhile so another girl came over. She was very sweet, as was the other waitress who came over and gave us a napkin. We asked for boxes and the check, and I see that our original waitress is back and taking an order from another table. One of the nice waitresses came over and had to give us the boxes and checks. I felt bad because I wanted to tip well for the nice waitresses but since we weren't their table I wasn't sure if they would get the tip. Our original waitress never returned to our table, by the way. I'm just very disappointed because I wanted to enjoy the food here and I did not want to get sick. I basically paid $27 to be ignored by our original waitress and have food that made me feel unwell. I've been challenging myself to try new cuisines and dishes and when I was in the Squirrel Hill area I decided to go in here and try something. The interior is very small, but decorated nicely and looked clean. The girl behind the counter was nice. I looked over the menu and just picked something since I'm not very familiar with Turkish food. I ordered and paid and was told it would be 15 minutes and I could wait outside. About 15 minutes later as promised she brought out my food. I ordered the Chicken Adana Kebab. It comes with bread, rice, a salad, two sauces and of course the kebab. The sauces are different - one is like a sort of yogurt/mint flavor and the other very spicy like some kind of chili. The rice and salad.... nothing special. The chicken had a good flavor, very different but good. The problem was how DRY it was. Definitely not impressed with my first taste of Turkish cuisine. I have a friend who lives in Turkey - hopefully he can show me better food when I visit him in Turkey. Because this just wasn't it. And was VERY pricey - over $19 for the chicken/salad/rice. After looking at a bunch of houses with our real estate broker we decided to take him out for lunch. He said he knew the perfect place that he goes to all the time that was great. I have to say i am not to outgoing when it comes to trying new food. When i herd that we were going to a Turkish Kebab House I was thinking ohhhh nothing ill eat there. I ordered a chicken Kebab wrap. Wow it was really really good totally amazing. The prices were also great $8 for a chicken kebab wrap it was so big I could barely finish it.The service was fast and friendly and the place was very clean. I tried this restaurant on recommendation of a colleague who said my current go to for Middle Eastern food was not up to snuff (she is from the region). I wasn't expecting anything fancy but was hopeful based on the above suggestion. The decor is pretty casual and while not dirty, doesnt have the most pleasant ambience. The service was a bit slow, but not unmanageable. The lamb dish I got was not as moist and flavorful as I have had elsewhere. Furthermore it was difficult to chew. The table pita was decent and the raita/yogurt sauce was good and added flavor to the dish. Finally, the price was not any better than other places. All in all, based on the rave recommendation I was let down. It is fine though if you evaluate independently from that. read more
