    Pierogies and haloushki
    Steve A.

I was visiting family in Pittsburgh and asked "Besides Primanti, what in town is actually eaten by locals? What is typical Pittsfood?" I was told, in no uncertain terms, pierogies, and that this was the place for those within walking distance. So, despite the Greek name, I can tell you that this place IS Polish. The owner/chef has populated the menu with options from both places, and after sampling, my determination is that you can't go wrong with Polish food. (Jury's out on the rest, until I return.) I went for one of each, with the following results: * Took a few minutes to prepare, but it was done fresh by the one person behind the counter. So that's understandable. She was friendly for when I was able to talk, but it was a little bit of a wait. Service = 4 stars. * Nondescript eating area. Only a couple of tables (and room for not much more), so I got my food to go. Ambiance = 2 stars (not that I ever rate on that, just letting you know). * Beverage choices are unfortunately American. They do include Pittsburgh's sweet tea, but you've gotta want that. At least they're cold and cheap. 3.5 stars. Now for the important parts that will determine my overall rating! 1. Pierogies I found superior to my local place in Morristown NJ. The outside was done crisper, the inside was filled thicker, much better value for more and better food. Downside: you only get potato/cheese, there is no other variety. 2. Haloushki: Not something I can get here, and I've heard is somehow Pittsburgh-specific. It shouldn't be. Some wide noodles that taste freshly made mixed with some healthy cabbage, but it doesn't taste like cabbage. With the right mix of salt/pepper/spice, it just... yum. Yum yum yum. 3. Golabki: Again, filled well (rice and meat) and doesn't taste that much like cabbage. A solid one, but this is more like the ones I could get here overall. So, how many stars shall I give? Nice service, tiny little local place, authentic food... but to be fair, since I did note a couple of drawbacks, I will hold this at 4. But it's a STRONG 4 and I absolutely want to come back here next time I visit!

The atmosphere doesn't look like much but the gyro was pretty good (10/10). It was one of the best gyros I've ever had. The seasoning they put on it made it quite tasty. I liked that you could pick between three sizes! The large gyro was plenty for me. We also got onion rings (2/10) and I wouldn't recommend. They were quite greasy and for $5.99 you got 5...

I recently had the Fried Oreo Sundae here. It has two fried Oreos, three scoops of your choice of ice cream (went with two scoops vanilla and one birthday cake), whipped cream, and a cherry on top for only $6. It was very delicious and enough for two people. Unfortunately, it was so hot that day that getting a picture of an ice cream sundae before it melted was impossible! They also have some old time candy. I got my kids two whistle lollipops since I hadn't seen those since my childhood. We ate the ice cream on a cute little bench outside.

I stumbled into Knossos when I was trying to go to another gyro joint up the street. This place reminds me of the hometown restaurants I grew up going to in the late 80s and early 90s. The owner is incredibly friendly but most important, makes an amazing Gyro! With three sizes, you can't go wrong. I also love that they have a nice selection of penny candy available at the register. Highly recommended!

Gyro fries. These were delicious! I highly recommend them!

The owners are truly amazing! The food is excellent! I highly recommend this wonderful place!

    Large Gyro no tomatoes

Paid $29 for a large gyro, veggie large gyro, 4 Pierogies and 4 fried Oreos, all of the food was very good. Food was fast and the owner was nice

I was staying at a nearby hotel and my plans for the evening had fallen through. Myorder included a felafel salad for $12. The restaurant didn't bother to tell the driver I was at this hotel, which is easy to get to if you know the area, but confusing by GPS, so the driver was late. No utensils despite my stating I was in a hotel. The salad was truly awful: the equivalent of 1 felafel patty, burnt and dry, laid on top of soggy iceberg lettuce, with feta cheese and...French fries. Really? Do people who order salads typically want cold, soggy French fries plopped on top? Picture below.

    Great Greek salad. Love it.

Hummus is very good. Not a place you'd want to "go out" for dinner but great for a quick bite to eat. Would go there again.

My husband and I ate one lunch here. Indoor and covered outdoor seating was available. The employees promptly greeted and seated us, and I appreciated that they recommended specific menu items to help me choose. After a reasonable wait, the foods were brought to our table. Here are my ratings for what we ordered: Grilled Shrimp - 5 stars - Several large, juicy shrimp were on skewers and had been perfectly cooked. Sides were mixed vegetables and a mix of rice and bulgur. Chicken Shish Kebab - 4 stars - The chunks of chicken were large and juicy and had a mild seasoning. On the side was rice pilav. Turkish Tea - 4.5 stars - This black tea was a good size and was served hot. Packets of sweeteners were available. The total price was $55 plus tax and tip.

Falafel appetizer was very, very hard and chewy. Even with a serrated knife it was difficult to cut! Shepherd Salad was fresh but was mostly red and green bell peppers. Very little tomato or cucumber or onion which I was expecting. Not their fault but mine for not knowing about this salad. Again they were super nice and offered to take it back. Donor Kebab was over cooked. Dry. Chewy. Tzatziki sauce was fine. I ordered two extra mini-cups of tzatziki to help me finish the donor kebab. (Extra $1). Bread was very good. I ordered the Turkish Tea but it never came : (

We were confused as to where the actual restaurant was. There is a sign on Route 8, so we parked there, looked around, walked downstairs, only to find it was offices. We then walked upstairs and found that the entrance was actually on the other side of the building but accessible from the front. It's an interesting place when you walk in. We were quickly greeted and seated. It seemed as though the owner and family were working. The menu was interesting, not real large but sufficient. We had, who I believe is the owner, come to our table and ask what we typically like to eat and then she was making suggestions. We thought she was just being helpful. My wife finally looked at her and said, I'm sorry are you also taking flour order now? She replied well that's what I was trying to do. To me that was a little off putting. We all took her suggestions and ordered. The food came out fresh and warm. It was good. We all tried each others meals. We felt that what my wife ordered was the best. My favorites were: 1) the char-grilled octopus - so tender 2) chicken souvlaki - the roasted veggies were so good with the smokiness of the chicken! 3) the salmon on top of the Elia salad - it was cooked to perfection. Juicy and flaky! Our server was the one who recommended the Elia Salad with salmon on top with the Champgane Vinaigrette. But, we went with the Greek dressing... I think we would have liked her recommendation more because the combo of salmon and salad was spot on! She definitely knew what she was doing and what tastes good! We sat in the indoor patio-like area and it was very bright with natural light and I love the exposed wood deco inside. It feels rustic and classy at the same time. Seeing him still there, working hard after all these years, was genuinely heartwarming. We visited over a busy holiday weekend, and although things were hectic, I couldn't help but feel for the owner, who was doing his best despite his age. I just wish the younger staff had stepped in to help him a little more. The food had some great highlights. The lamb kabob was tender, juicy, and full of flavor, the hummus was delicious, the lemon potatoes were amazing, and I enjoyed the sampler platter with the stuffed grape leaves. Overall, Christos has a lot of charm, history, and heart. I truly hope this Pittsburgh staple is around for many more years. With a little more attention to the service, the experience could easily match the quality of the food.

It felt a lot like going back in time as the atmosphere is just very different to most spots you'd find today. I didn't try any, but I've heard several folks say that his wine is excellent. I'd say this space is certainly worth checking out.
