This is by far the best Turkish restaurant in long island. It is right near the water with a lot of out door seating for the summer. Food is delicious and staff is very helpful. I have been to Turkuaz quite a few times and have never been disappointed. However, last night sealed the deal for me. Turkuaz is by far, one of the best restaurants that Riverhead has to offer! Last night was Valentine's Day as well as yet another winter blizzard. I came home from working my Saturday shift at a local brewery to find that my Valentine had in fact made arrangements for the night. I found this to be a surprise since we have both voiced our discontent for what a circus Valentine's dining experiences can be. Even if you make a reservation for 7 pm, you won't be seated until 8 pm. Both the service and the food preparation suffer due to how busy it is. Overall, it tends to be more annoying than enjoyable. My Valentine said he called Turkuaz and made sure they were still open (because of the snow) and they said they would be open and that we would not require a reservation (AWESOME!). We arrived at about 7:30pm to a completely empty restaurant. This made me ecstatic because the last thing I would've wanted was to walk into a packed out, loud restaurant or an experience akin to what I mentioned before. The fact that the restaurant was empty, in this situation was a good thing because I was already familiar with how good the food is. Under other circumstances, I could see how an empty restaurant on one of the busiest nights for dining out could be a red flag. We started with some drinks; I ordered a Sauvignon Blanc and my Valentine had an Efes Turkish beer. For appetizers we ordered the hummus and the Turkish cigars. I am a hummus addict and every time I visit Turkuaz, I order the hummus. You just can't beat homemade hummus with fresh, warm pita bread. The Turkish cigars are admittedly a little indulgent, but it was a special occasion. The cigars are thin dough that is rolled around feta and parsley and then pan-fried until golden brown. We find them to be quite delectable. Dave (my aforementioned Valentine) also ordered a cup of the red lentil soup; a go-to for him during each visit. The staff was nice enough to let us order our appetizers and give us some time to think about our entrée choices. I thought that this was a testament to what a fantastic place this was. We were the only customers in the restaurant during a winter storm, and while I'm sure the entire staff just wanted to pack up and go home for the night, they never made us feel rushed or that we were an inconvenience; even when Dave ordered the Grilled Sea Bass Branzini. Our server informed us that the Sea Bass would take 30 minutes to prepare. We were not concerned about the time, because we didn't have to be anywhere. However, it wasn't until the server left that it occurred to us that by ordering the 30-minute Sea Bass, we might be inconveniencing them. Which made us both feel bad, even though the staff didn't even blink when he confirmed his order. For my entrée, I decided on the Turkuaz Surf & Turf. I enjoy this dish because it gives me a little of everything I want. It's a combination of grilled fresh shrimps and tender lamb chops or lamb shish served with rice and bulgur, fresh salad and beet salad; I chose the lamb shish. The meals came out with the same amount of love and perfect presentation as would always be expected. Dave's Sea Bass was grilled to perfection! We ordered some baklava to go, as to not keep them any later than we already had. We said many "thank-yous" on the way out, as we were so thankful for the amazing meal and service. When we got in the car, I told Dave I was going to make it a point to write a small Yelp review because I was so impressed with how they treated us and how we had the BEST Valentine's Day because of their warm reception to us, despite us being their only customers and ordering the one meal that takes half an hour to prepare. Many, many thanks to the staff and owners of Turkuaz! You made our Valentine's Day amazing this year!! I really liked this place, but I have bad experience with this restaurant this time. The service is VERY poor, they need to pay more attention to the customers! We came here for dinner , party of two, we were waiting long time by the door, but nobody payed attention at us, then a young guy set us at the dirty table , we were waiting that somebody will come and clean it and bring us menus, but all the stuff was passing by us, and then the same guy who sat us at the DIRTY table came to us and picked up a check from previous customers ( I thought he came to clean the table and brought us menus, but nothing happened), we were waiting for 20 minutes and then we left. Great food Update review ; First time we went there , service wasn't that great , but food was excellent . Second time ( which is why I'm changing the number of stars and my review ), food just wasn't the same. It was way too oily and the spices just didn't hit my palate like they did the first time . I ordered the same thing each time , chicken kebab. In fact the second time , the chicken pieces were very chewy, as if it wasn't cooked, but I didn't see any pink so it had to be the way it was prepped or the quality. I saw one of the owners, Demet Bozatli cursing out a 15-year old little girl and calling out racial slurs when she asked to replace her drink, which had not been touched. The whole incident was caught on camera. Came for the great reviews with my husband but will not be back and will be telling everyone to stay away - worst customer service in my life was seeing a woman in her 50s cursing a little girl because of a drink order worth $2.50. Restaurants with bad reviews do not stay in business long. This is my favorite restaurant in Riverhead. Overlooking the Peconic River, it probably has the best view in town. I love the whole fried fish, the Adana Kebab and the cold appetizer platter. I hate to be too glowing because it's small, usually packed, and they don't take reservations no matter how much you beg. I hope this place is here forever. read more

We had the most Delicious and different lunch here today. Such a nice little family run ( I am assuming) place. Its in a small cheerful house with a view of the river going by. Today was cold and stormy so obviously we stayed inside. My crazy lamb thing was so yummy. Its served over a cut up pita bread and topped with tomato sauce. We got takeout from here on a Saturday night. The person who took our order was very nice and we were told our fairly large order of food- 2 apps, 2 entrees, and 2 desserts- would only take 15 min. When we arrived, sure enough our food was ready, even though nearly every table was occupied. Now as I mentioned, we got a total of 6 items and every single thing we got was AMAZING. Portions are hearty but not disgustingly huge. The prices are reasonable for such good quality food. We kept looking at each other in delight throughout our meal- it was that good. And the pistachio baklava? Might be the most delectable thing I've ever eaten. Take my advice and get more than one order. I am surprised to see so many positive reviews. The restaurant is one of the dirtiest I've visited in my life. I saw a roach in the bathroom. The dishes were mismatched and my cup was cracked. When we were seated on the old broken couch and a very wobbly chair, I had a feeling I was visiting some poor relatives' house... The food was mediocre at best. The Adana kebab had slightly funky smell to it. The lamb and chicken kebabs were good. The baklava desert was heavily soaked in syrup and lacked the nuts. One of the best Turkish restaurants I've been to.. Ever. Honestly the closest thing you can get to Istanbul without leaving the USandA. The Kofte was ridiculously good, you could easily taste the grass-fed beef and lamb mixed into the spices. I'm all for quality ingredients. Try their beet salad as well. Great food but lousy service. The employees are extremely rude and obnoxious. Had an issue with the bill, was double charged for chicken fingers for my daughter. They brought out the wrong thing at first then corrected it....great until I saw the bill. Then when I was talking to the waiter to have him correct it the women waitress, who didn't even wait on me laughed in my face. It was a nice afternoon to go to Turkuaz Grill, be seated by the window and then watch other people come in after us and be seated, their orders taken and then actually be served. On the way out, I put the menu's on the counter and told the owner, no service. He just looked at me and said nothing, no apologies, and just continued to work on the other orders. Maybe he thought the women waiting with her child could now take our table and bo loss. We have been to this place several times, times when they seemed to have little business. We've never had a bad meal at Turkuaz. Often times we'll stop in for lunch. We have come for dinner a few times too. The food is always delicious and hot, well seasoned, and in HUGE portions. I often get a combination platter with 2 meats at lunch and save half for the next day's lunch. Everything reheats well too, which is always a plus in my book. The desserts are all extremely tasty too, from the baklava to something that is shredded wheat, cheese and honey I think. . . . it's out of this world! Additionally, the staff is lovely! read more

Most disappointing. We have Turkish roots and love Turkish food. However, this was probably one of our worst experiences in a Turkish restaurant. Service was haphazard at best. The food was bland and lacking any flavor: no salt, no pepper, and slices of lemon were dispensed stingily. The fried liver was overcooked and the spinach and cheese pie was soggy.
