On my last visit, though, to replace about 8 bespoke shirts I had previously purchased there, in the middle of my selections, someone, who was obviously more important than me, came in whereupon my salesman disserted me for 15 minutes, without an apology, to help him. When it comes to shirts, no one does it better than Turnbull and Asser. The fit and overall quality peaks volumes. Unfortunately, their level of online commerce and customer does not. Inventory is often not available, despite being shown available online, and customer service responses are few and far between. I have had about 10 bespoke shirts made by Turnbull & Asser (the London store on Bury Street). The process of commissioning the shirts and fittings was great, despite me not living in London. Unfortunately, there seems to be some issue with the sewing quality. Shortly after the purchases, I have had to deal with several (four to be precise) instances of buttons coming off (on different shirts). This is despite that one of their marketing taglines is that their buttons never fall off (true, my buttons did not actually fall off as I have had the shirts repaired in time). Maybe I am at fault for not handling the shirts properly, but I have about 40 shirts from different makers of different qualities (RTW, MTM and bespoke) and I am facing this issue only with the Turnbull & Asser shirts. I have asked their bespoke department for advice and recommendation on what I can do to avoid this. Unfortunately, they have not responded in a meaningful way for over 5 months now: for several months, I have received no reply to my e-mails whatsoever. After I had written a post on their Facebook page, they finally replied and promised to look into the issue. However, 3 months later, they still have not given me an actual response. To be clear, I am most disappointed by this poor customer service. It might be the case that the button sewing is fine and I am to blame for the buttons coming off (but then again, I do not face this issue with my other shirts), but it is hard for me to accept in this day and age that a customer of a premium bespoke shirtmaker, with such a history and tradition, cannot get an answer to his question for several months despite having sent repeated reminders. To sum up, my rating of T&A shirts is 5/5 for fit, 3/5 for finishing and 1/5 for customer service; 3/5 overall. I am not saying I will never buy anything from them again but I will for sure think twice before visiting them and will probably first try other bespoke shirtmakers in London. read more

If you are a politician, trust fund baby or simply James Bond, there is no better place to buy your shirt than Turnbull & Asser. I could wax eloquent about the fabric, the longevity, the superior customer service and the bespoke options. But at the end of it all, as is the case with aging for example, one has to live the experience to know its real advantages and downsides. The only downside with Turnbull is the price -- it can be quite a turnoff. But over the lifetime of the shirt, it might compare equal with two from Thomas Pink or two dozen from H&M. James didn't choose his watch well, but couldn't have picked a better shirt. read more

Before saying anything else, the decor, ambiance and general setup in the store is amazing. I have been to the store in London as well and LOVE the brand and everything it means. I've been to the NYC store now several times over the last few years, buying a few shirts and most recently coming in to buy a tie. The service has really gone downhill. When I went to get the tie, I was treated very rudely and the tone of the saleswoman reeked of condescension. She even argued with me over the price several times. It's really sad because I love the brand and love the London store and the service they provide, but the standards for service of the NYC store have gone drastically downhill and I hope they are addressed soon because it's a tarnish to the brand. read more

Turnbull & Asser is one of my favorite clothing stores in New York, especially insofar as shirts are concerned. Whether it is a set of bespoke shirts, ready-to-wear shirts or custom shirts, the associates at Turnbull & Asser have always been extremely helpful in many ways. While I've always been highly satisfied with custom-made shirts by Bergdorf Goodman and Hamilton Shirts represented by Barneys New York, it is always nice to discover additional possibilities of style and fabric, such as those offered by Turnbull & Asser: the sumptuous Sea Island Quality herringbone textiles in a range of solid colors, the sophisticated, severe cutaway collar, the distinctive cocktail cuff that seems to be primarily a Turnbull & Asser signature, and the precise silhouette of a slim fit all bring together a garment that is a cultivated enhancement of the torso, sort of a second skin. Superb selection of fabrics, especially those by Thomas Mason. read more

Growing up on the UES, I always passed Turnbull & Asser, but never went in to see their offerings. It wasn't until now, in my late twenties, and after I moved out of Manhattan, that I started to develop a taste for quintessentially British style. While visiting friends in NYC for New Year's, I knew that I had to experience their bespoke service. I have measurements that fall out of off the rack range, so bespoke is my only option if I want a proper fit (not just for T&A, but pretty much any tailored clothing as well) The bespoke manager is amazing. He's so personable that I immediately felt comfortable with the entire process. I hate stuffy and stuck up service, but this was the exact opposite. He was quick to offer suggestions on how he could accommodate the fact that I live out-of-state, since the process requires a sample to be made, and the measurements adjusted if needed. I took home two small fabric books so I could take my time picking out the next five shirts (initial minimum for bespoke is six). During the fitting process, we spoke a lot about our shared horological interests, and he provided a lot of interesting tidbits of information on James Bond. Overall, the experience was a cut (lame pun intended) far above other shirt makers that I've tried. Their prices are obviously high and almost guilt-engendering (~$350-$600 depending on fabric), but considering that you'd pay similar for ready-to-wear Ralph Lauren Purple Label (or Lorenzini, maker of RLRP) or similar, I consider T&A to be a much better value. *UPDATE* I received my sample shirt within a few weeks of ordering. The turnaround time was amazing, and the fit was great. I only had to make a few adjustments, and now I'm looking forward to receiving the rest of the lot. Be warned, though, it took me a few months to actually fly back to New York so that they could assess the fit in person. By that time, a few of their limited-run fabrics had sold-out, so, if you are doing bespoke and like some of their T&A patterns, make sure you order them in a timely manner. read more

The service was top notch even for someone just browsing. I don't know what some other reviewers were talking about regarding the service. I've never bought a shirt here, but the quality looks fantastic. Service was also terrific. Even though I wasn't exactly dressed as their usual clientele, (jeans and scrappy t-shirt) I never felt judged or rushed. The staff was also very helpful with any questions. The real reason I stopped by the shop was the penthouse floor. An actual Crockett & Jones shop! I've been lusting after some Edward Green's for a bit, but I could never rationalize the cost to actually throw down hard earned cash for these EG beauties. C&J fitted into my budget a lot easier, and the quality is excellent. As with the shirts, the staff at the shoe shop was just as accommodating. I left with 2 pairs of classic brogues for the price of 1 pair of EG's. If you are looking for a taste of classic English service and suiting (which NYC is certainly lacking) look no further than here. It's a bit pricey, but every person deserves a good shirt on their backs. read more

I have yet to get bespoke shirts but none the less I am treated like royalty when I am here. I have only been in the store three times however both the second and third times the sales person on the second floor remembered me. T&A has a style all it's own, the unique collars and cuffs provide a look that is clearly british. Their exclusive patterns are often a little too bold for me but I enjoy your their staple fabrics and sea island cotton very much. As with other fine shirts the devil is in the details. My offerings continue to stand the test of time, a testament to the build quality (stiches per inch) and fabric quality. Every dapper gentleman should treat himself to the T&A experience. read more

I miss the old T&A store. The quality stayed the same while the experience changed. I miss conversing with the proper employees from the UK and going over the details. Now they have American's who know they are working for someone special, but still do not get the process of their creations. The dark wood has been replaced by paint and basic fixtures. The scraps of paper of people's sizes and framed portraits of their famous heads of state no longer exist. With that being said, they still make the BEST ties and BEST shirts. They tie and fit perfectly. Boy, they look good. read more

The store is beautiful, and I have always been treated warmly and assisted right away. The bespoke is perhaps the best custom shirt experience in the city. The measurements and styling are precise, and thus the result is exceptional. The amount of colors, patterns, cuts, and other details available is almost overwhelming in magnitude. However, they will always help you select what is best based upon what you are in need of and your preferences. It is the epitome of a truly wonderful store. A complete farce. Waited 9 months for one shirt after two tries they couldn't even get a decent fit. When I asked if they could rush a third attempt. They waited a week and then said no.... My favorite shirts. Better than Charvet, Lori Piano or Polo Purple Label. Fit great and workmanship. Buy regular fit unless you are really thin. Try before buying. Look for sales on their website or Amex offers when you spend more than $300 which is almost impossible not to spend. read more

Like Barbour, Turnbull is another English institution that is uncompromising and unparalleled in quality. Their royal appointments - though snooty - simply mean they are knighted in a sense. turnbull & asser makes some of the world's finest shirts, rivaling the best british shirtmakers on london's famous jermyn st. they are known for their bright colors but their look overall is on the conservative side (i think they're the official shirtmaker for the prince of wales). their regular shirts are distinguished by the 3-button cuffs. build quality is excellent -- my first T&A shirt was from almost 7 years ago and it still looks great. now as for the store itself, i must say that i used to think that the service there would be intimidating, given their usual clientele (which i'm definitely not one of them -- T&A is an occasional splurge for me). i usually buy my T&A shirts from the nearby bergdorf (also stuffy, but not as much). so i was pleasantly surprised when last week i accompanied my friend's uncle to buy a shirt from the store, the service was great i ended up buying a shirt for myself! well it was also on sale (cheapest in the store), but nevermind -- the salesperson was very accomodating, and took the time to explain their bespoke service to me in detail, even though i made it clear that there was no way i could afford it. he also offered advise on things like collar types, choosing and buying a suit, etc. definitely go here for awesome shirts + great service. read more

Service is hit or miss here. Have bought about 1k worth of accessories (cufflinks). Went in to look at a raincoat and asked the girl who was helping whether it was waterproof or water resistant. She said it wasn't waterproof to which I remarked that it was odd. She made some snarky comment about whether I was going to a place where it was going to downpour and further said something about it like most watches being water resistant unless they're sport. I collect a few watches so know what's up so had to chuckle. Either way, the snark was uncalled for and you're asking 1k+ for a raincoat so I don't think asking for one that's waterproof would be unusual. Been in the store a few times and it's never really packed and the attendants seem to like to mill around each other and chit chat. Not the best service around for sure. Anyways, It'll be awhile before I go back if at all. read more

The store, the merchandise and the wonderful staff, always helpful and genial, make T&A one of the better stores here in NYC--- and on 57th Street. The latter, along with Madison Avenue, evoke the high end of Rodeo Drive of Beverly Hills. The store is housed within a beautiful townhouse building and staff, some of whom are American, offer the quintiessential British shopping experience; their bespoke expertise is among the best. (The fact that the three or four townhouses to the right of the store have recently been torn down to make room for yet again another boring high floor building, and Turnbull & Asser stands alone, may offer a retail interpretation of the wonderful phrase, "There will always be an England.") There are ladies' offerings, too. In sum, if you have not shopped here, stop in, you need not buy a thing, to be pleasantly surprised. read more
