My 4 year old grandson loved his time at The Stables at Turtle Bay! He got some "hands on" experience grooming the pony. The guide was very careful with him being so close to the pony. There was one lady there that seemed like she didn't care about the horses and was super rude to me. I was asking for advice to not hurt the horse while mounting. She then raised her voice at me and told me if I feel bad for the horse, she is going to "put" me on a different horse if I keep saying things like that. Below is a video attached of this incident. She knew I connected with the horse earlier and that I genuinely wanted to ride him. I felt threatened when I expressed my concern about hurting him.. I live on the island and I would never recommend this place to any of my friends or family based on how she made us feel. Everyone else at the stables was very nice. I honestly feel bad because my friend also heard her barking orders at her co workers in a very rude manner. She also felt uncomfortable. read more

Recently had a friend in town that wanted to do horseback riding. This is definitely a place I would recommend! You get to ride a long the beach Nice bathrooms Locker for your things Great and friendly staff Horses are all healthy We got to see turtles in the water as we walked with the horses along the shoreline We signed up for the 45 min ride but we're a little disappointed because it wasn't actually 45 mins. We got back about 10-12 minutes early. Really wish we were able to get the full 45 mins for the $90 we paid. Still a great place and highly recommend. Very professional staff and clean as well. We will be back! Follow the signs for the stables. It's on the left before you get to the main entrance of the resort. Take that road all the way to the end and there's a big red barn. We booked this through the Turtle Bay Resort and was so disappointed in the experience. One of the horse got snippy with another horse and had to be separated from each other. I was behind the horse that was spooked and felt a anxious during the entire ride because they kept everyone in a single file with no space between the horses. If there was an abrupt stop, the horses would bump in to each other. The entire ride was along a trail, not on a beach. We trudged along in single file the entire time. The guides did not share any interesting info or if they did, we couldn't hear it because there was 1 guide in front and 1 in back with 9 novice riders between them. I've done other horse rides before and this was very dull! read more

Turtle Bay has always been 5 star with everything they do & yesterday they kept true to their high quality customer service & surpassed any expectations I had. Miss Kylie treated the girls (ages 3&7) so wonderfully. I am a career nanny that took the girls for their Christmas present for their 1st pony ride- I share with the girls the value of adventure & experiences over toys. Miss Kylie was great at speaking with the girls at eye level before entering the barn & giving clear directions for safety. She praised the girls for all the things they did right like putting the brushes away after grooming & walking around the rear end of the horse with a safe distance to prevent an accidental injury. In that short time, she built a sense of trust with the girls before she had them take their ride on "Goldie", their pony. It made all the difference in their outlook of this is fun vs this is scary. The girls had a BLAST! It was so truly special! Thank you Miss Kylie, Goldie, Oker, Pono, Lilikoi, & silly Beetle without a halter-just enjoying his hay, for sharing your time with us. I did the advanced ride with Kayla and had SO MUCH FUN!!! She was so sweet and knowledgeable. We trotted/cantered/galloped at times which I appreciated since I strive for more adventure than just a walking trail ride. We went RIGHT next to the water, on the sand. It is illegal to ride horses below the tree line on the beaches in Hawaii, but we got as close as we could. It was absolutely gorgeous. An experience I will never forget. I rode Boogie, a gorgeous paint horse. All their horses are extremely well taken care of, well fed, with super shiny coats. They also have 2 massive draft horses that are over 18 hands. Also, all you have to do to get there from the resort is ask the valet guys to drive you over to the stables on a golf cart! How fun is that? PS we saw 2 turtles in the water while we were riding; that's how close we were to the water. So beautiful. read more

We paid extra to go on the romantic private sunset tour. Having our own guide for just my wife and I was so worth it. Our guide was amazingly nice and my wife loved the 5 or 6 photo ops at different spots along the tour. My horse was new to the stable and was giving me a hard time but I still loved him. Beautiful trail & sunset view, but a very slow messed up trail ride. The rocks, foliage & dead plant roots need to be cleared off the trail cause a lady behind us fell after her horse got tangled up somehow. The stable has one outhouse that was a horror to go into or change in, which I waited to go elsewhere. They say to wear jeans, but a lady wore shorts. We bought a pair of jeans for $70 at the Turtle Bay Resort since they should've told us that it wasn't mandatory. My boyfriend is an experienced horseman who tried to helped as we watched the poor lady who fell, her horse gallop passed us. But the trail guy said he didn't need help which in deed he did as he lead three lone horses slowly ahead of us. This made our already slow ride even longer & slower than molasses. I understand liability, but we live in KY & breath horse. If you understand horses this is not the trail ride for you or anyone who has experience w/ these animals. Also they told me on the phone that we would go on the beach, we never did. It was a trail 'along' the beach, not the beach. I was very much anticipating to ride my horse in the water or sandy beach for my bday. To say the least, it was like a pony ride at a petting zoo as a child being lead, except a much more beautiful scenery. Single file line with & for inexperienced riders. I'm not one to complain & am grateful for 'walking a horse along the beach at Turtle Bay' don't get me wrong, but expected what I was told over the phone for $115, this should've been $45 or less per person. They should have levels for trail rides based on experience, clean the trail & be more educational, not chit chatting about nonsense. Also this trail is open to the public & dogs, which can both spook horses easily so there were a few times I got tense cause of drunks, kids & dogs. Our trail ride 'experts' consisted of a lady in the front of us, who talked way too much the whole way about nonsense, not the trail & helped the slow pace go even slower. The 75 minute trail ride is really her delaying the pace by talking. She talked so much that she didn't help when we told her, her partner needed help w/ the loose horse & lady lying on the ground until minutes went passed & multiple times saying hey they need help! Three stars for the horses, tho some were crippled, & the view. If you've ever ridden a horse, this is the most boring, disappointing & slowest trail ride ever. read more

We did the pony experience. My daughter is 5 and loved it! She got to brush the pony and help put the saddle. It was easy to get to and find. I wasn't staying at the resort so we drove and went to the lobby where the reservation said to meet . There they just had me sign a form . Then we drove to the barn . Husband and older son stayed in the lobby area and grabbed a bite to eat while me and my daughter went to the pony experience. It was cute and simple for this age . We happened upon the stables at turtle bay in an attempt to look for turtles along the beach. My 2-year old daughter is obsessed with horses so when we came across it and asked if we were allowed to interact with the horses in any way. The young woman working that day was so kind and went out of her way to give my daughter a memorable experience. So naturally we had to book a pony experience for the next day. "Uncle" was our guide for the experience and he was amazing! In addition to his kind nature and patience with our little one, he also went above and beyond to give us the perfect experience, even taking beautiful pictures and video of us! We booked a 45-minute Trail Ride for 1:30pm at the Kama'aina/Miltary rate of $69.99 ($84.99 regular price) and had the BEST TIME EVER! It was a leisurely paced group trail ride in a single file line along Kawela Bay, so if you're an experienced rider or looking to gallop a little faster, you should consider other options available. Trail rides are offered daily at 8:30am, 9:30am, 10:30am, 12:30pm, & 1:30pm. You will need to check-in at least 30-minutes prior to the start time to read the waiver form and sign. Since we booked the Trail Ride through the Turtle Bay Resort, we met up at the Guidepost in the hotel lobby to sign the waivers and a ride over on the resort golf cart. Fun! Our group of six was led by one guide (they can accommodate up to 12 people) and she was at the front of the pack. Along the way she would remind us to kick (to move the horse forward) or pull the reins up and to the side (to redirect their attention). My horse, Leo, was chomping at the bit and would head straight to his favorite greens along the way. I admit that I was afraid to pull to the side because I didn't want to make him mad. But, our guide would reassure us it was okay. Leo still got what he wanted and still resumed second to the last in line as he chewed. Too cute! Things to note: Slather on some sunscreen! Most of the trail is through the forest with sweeping ocean views, but areas like the pillbox expose you to the open air. I wore long pants (recommended) and a long sleeved shirt, so I was certainly protected by the elements like the sun, dirt, and wind! Yes, you can bring a camera. There are many opportunities to take photos along the way. You just want to make sure one hand is always secured to the horse's reins. A GoPro is another nice option so you're hands-free. If you're a guest at Turtle Bay, a one-time 24-hour GoPro camera demo is included in your resort fee. So, this might be a good time to try it out and hook it to your helmet. Speaking of a helmet, wearing a helmet is required for the duration of the ride. The stable has many helmets available in sizes S, M, & L that you can borrow free of charge. Lockers are available for use as large bags are not permitted on the rides. I wore a small crossbody purse and it never got in the way or fell off. At the end of the ride, our guide was kind enough to take photos of us with our own cameras. It made for such a memorable time! Friendly guides, gorgeous trail, and of course, awesome horses! I highly recommend this Trail Ride! You may be a lil sore at the end, but it's totally worth it. read more

Let me start out by saying I live here. I don't normally do touristy activities but my partner wanted to ride by the water, so we signed up not expecting much---I was wrong. On this ride I unfortunately lost my wallet (a complete disaster when you figure my Vaccine Passport and whole life is contained in that tiny clutch)! After dismounting post-ride I quickly realized the loss and Raul, our guide, was kind enough to take my partner and I on the cart back along the trail to attempt recovery of my wallet (& sanity). After hunting without luck, Raul took down my number and assured me he'd check around on the next rides and reach out with any news. Took my niece here for the keiki pony ride on a Sunday and she had a blast! All smiles ear-to-ear and talking about the horses the whole ride home. For about $40 (no kamaaina discounts) the kids get to brush the pony while it eats before hopping on a horse for a 10-15 min ride. This was a nice surprise being that it's called a pony ride. The entire experience is 20 minutes so I booked 2 slots so my niece could have a longer ride. The staff was super accommodating and great with kids. I would say the only downside if there was any at all is that the website advertises that you can ride the pony or have a carriage ride. The carriage was not an option this day and I didn't get the impression it was available at all. All in all though it was a fun experience and she definitely wants to come back again. read more

Came here for the first time and was not disappointed. We had chosen the morning beach tour. You need to check in at the Guidepost Activity desk located in the hotel lobby. Then you can either drive in your vehicle or be taken by gold cart(can take 4 people) up to the stables. There, you will be greeted by your guides. First, you need to get a riding helmet from the office. You can use one of the lockers to place any personal belongings that you don't want to take on the ride. Next you go up on one of the platforms where you will be provided instructions on mounting and riding the horse. How to get them to turn left or right, stop, backup, go forward and what to do when they stop to eat and they love to eat!!! Then it's match up time. Horse to rider and where you will be placed in line. I was matched up with Beautiful Pohina and placed at the back of the line where, I was told she feels most comfortable. The trail for our tour went right alongside the ocean and at times we could even feel the ocean spray touching upon us like a morning blessing. It's was so relaxing the sound of the water, feel of the mist and steady pace of your horse. Then the trail goes a little more inland as you make the turn to go back towards the stables. Lots of green in that area makes for the horses delight. We really enjoyed the experience. Thank you to our guides-Kylie and Kiana. Good job ladies!!! Our sunset ride through the forest along the beautiful North Shore of Oahu on Concho and Lio (Hawaiian for horse) with our trail guides Vera and Louise was the perfect way to end a day that started with a hike up Diamond Head. My 3 1/2 year old son had a blast riding Lily the mini horse! Raul was an excellent guide and the rest of the staff was amazing! We stayed at the Turtle Bay Resort and the walk was only five minutes from our cottage. Or if you're not a guest (or even if you are) you can drive your own car to the stables. They allowed us to come by the stables anytime (even if they were closed) to greet and pet the horses. Both my son and daughter adored Rosie the pony and would approach us as we walked around the corral. Lily and her Mom (pictured) are behind the stables and can be seen if you to walk through the barn. They let us mosey around everywhere and never once hinted we were "not suppose to be here" to pet them. They said we could visit and offer the horses apples and carrots anytime even not being guests of the hotel, since we visit Oahu so often. So if you are on the North Shore and want to see more than turtles sunbathing and grabbing Giovanni's, make your way here to pet some of the most happiest and friendliest horses and ponies. read more

coming from somebody who used to work here, they treat the horses absolutely horribly. they tack them up at 6 AM and leave them saddled the entire day - no matter how old they are, tied to a fence in between all the rides until the sun goes down. half the horses are lame and they claim they switch off days they use the horses but if it's busy season they don't care. we had a horse fall over 3 times before they finally retired it. we've had many complaints about the treatment of the horses and the staff but nothing is ever done because money here comes before anything else and everything gets swept under the rug. the manager is the absolute worst. she's rude to all the employees and even said after a complain that our horse was limping "they're just trail horses they aren't going to all be in perfect shape". the hotel is a union and they claim that there's seniority here and even if somebody was hired one day before you, they have seniority to be called in 100% of the time above you (which is fine)... that is until they don't want to follow it. the person hired months after me got called in over me for two months and when i found out and went to HR they did nothing even though they told me that shouldn't have happened and fact checked it. the horses deserve better it makes me so sad. read more

Had a really pleasant beachside ride on a Sunday morning. Let me preface this review: the last horseback-riding experience I'd had was MISERABLE. It was a three-hour ride on a Kohala ranch on the Big Island. Seemed like it would have been lovely, but halfway out, about the farthest point away from the stables, it started POURING. We're talking a biblical-proportions deluge. So we and our poor horses had to slog through the driving rain with no shortcuts. They had given us duster coats to wear, but they were no match for what fell from the skies. Sitting on a wet horse in a wet coat, my animal-dander allergies kicked into overdrive. I had hives the rest of the day and was still a sneezy, wheezy histamine mess the next. Miserable, I tell you! So I haven't exactly been enthusiastic about getting back onto a horse any time soon. So what made this ride appealing, after all that? First, we had a coupon, and there are kama'aina rates. I'm thrifty, so big appeal there. :) Second, the trail goes along the coast of the resort property for much of the ride. Combination of beach views and woods and lots of fresh air. Third, no rain in the forecast! Finally, it's a short ride - we were on the horses for about an hour. Another nice touch is their wooden porch-like platform from which you mount your horses, so you don't have to heave yourself up and over onto the saddle. The guides will tell you your horse's name, and what the name means, if it's Hawaiian. (I rode Hiapo, which means firstborn.) Serious riders will be really disappointed by the nose-to-tail slow pace, but for horse novices and keiki, it's perfect. It was just long enough that my butt wasn't sore from sitting in the saddle! Two guides, one in front and one in back, plus only about half a dozen riders, so it's relatively intimate. The guides have some bits of trivia that they tell you along the trail, and they were responsive and knowledgeable with questions. You'll go past Kawela Bay and the banyan tree, where Lost and the Hunger Games were filmed. You'll see a WWII-era pillbox and lovely views of the Pacific. The horses are very docile, too. Turtle Bay is a sort of retirement home for rodeo horses, and it's not bad to be a horse on Oahu's North Shore. The horses love the sweet grass on the sides of the trail, so we had to guide them back from time to time (Mine was a big snacker! I get you, Hiapo. I get you.), but they were easily led back onto the trail. We reserved our spaces the day before. We checked in at the Hele Huli adventure center 30 min before our ride, then walked down to the stables to get fitted for helmets. If there's nobody out to greet you, walk around to the right, where there's a small porch and sliding-glass door. Kama'aina $50 each. I think regular rates are $70. They have several other options, including a keiki pony experience, more private rides for advanced riders, and a sunset ride. read more
