Came to Bowen Island for a day trip on a Friday and visited Tuscany for dinner. Walked in around 6:30pm for a table of two. There wasn't a wait at all, but a few minutes later,ore people started tricking in. It does get busy during peak hours, so recommend making a reservation if coming during the weekend. We ordered a bolognese & shrimp linguini, both which were amazing. The bolognese was my favourite as the noodles were al dente and sauce was hearty and flavourful. Unhelpful staff and uncomfortable eating environment. We had a reservation for 5 but were placed in direct sun in 30degree heat. We are locals and were first in the restaurant with a reservation. We were informed that's all the could give us. If such is the case nightly and is to be expected at Tuscany restaurant, I would advise against counting on them for dinner. read more

She had no customer service skills what so ever.She said she was too busy to answer the phone, literally her job. She was old enough to know better. I made a reservation for my birthday and I was excited to end the day with a perfect dinner. The service was super slow. It took long time to get water and another 15-20 minutes for the server to take our order. Drinks came after our appetizer. The ice in the glass was melted so I guess it was just left out for a long time. Main dish didn't come for another 30 minutes. I wanted to ask for Tabasco but none of the server ever stopped by once to check on us so I gave up. Food was good (other than the tiramisu) but overall it was a very very disappointing experience. At least, If the server said, sorry for the wait! Or something like that, it makes the experience different. But nothing. Two stars for good food. No stars for functionality. We ordered at 7:30ish and our food came out around 9:00. We had a reservation so they were expecting us. Server was friendly but completely ignored the fact that we were waiting and waiting and waiting... They should have at least brought out some bread or something. We were so famished by the time the food came everyone silently inhaled their somewhat pricy dishes rather than enjoying over a nice glass of wine with our meal like we had planned. Yes there was a large tour group that arrived right after us but 90 plus minutes to get your food without any recognition of the wait is absurd. Won't go back after that experience. I was a big fan of the beef and veal meatballs as it was the perfect combinations of flavours and wasn't too cheesy. The pizza was also quite good. Atmosphere is excellent! Courtyard with a fountain and YEARS old vines growing above you. Food was good - I got the prawn scampi and it needed a bit of seasoning. But the service was horrible. Restaurant was 1/3 full when I arrived (with a reservation) and there were plenty of staff circling tables. It took 25 minutes for my server to come and take my drink order. Since I had had PLENTY of time to think I put my full 3 course order in. She stuttered and giggled and couldn't even make a sentence (and before you judge me, she was blonde, young, English speaking). Didn't tell me about specials. Didn't pour water. And then had her fellow staff serve my drink and food and bill. Because I spent years in the service industry I did not give zero tip - I gave a 12%. And that was generous. I managed to get a reservation for Friday at 7:45 (cutting it close because I believe they're last call is at 8:15) and thank goodness I had such a lovely meal. ANTIPASTO - Heirloom tomato and Burrata Caprese: Delicious! Served with homemade pesto. The flavours all complimented each excellently. Initially I was caught a bit off guard that the tomatoes were roasted/warm, but it grew on me. Pro tip: SAVE THE LEFTOVER/REMAINING PESTO/BALSAMIC DELICIOUS GOODNESS if you're ordering pizza because dipping the crust into it is just chef's kiss. - Toscana Salad : so yummy! The flavours all complemented each other so well. MAINS - Pollo and Pesto Pizza : very yummy. A tiny bit too cheesy for my liking, but that's just me. - Bella Funghi : A more subtle flavour than the Pollo and Pesto. Yummy as well. - Lingue Vongole : this was a daily special as well!! Had bits of bacon in it. Lots of butter. - Bologese alla Rigatoni : the sauce had a bit of a nutmeg-ey almost Moussaka-like flavour to it. Not very tomatoey, which was a nice change. Desserts: - Tiramisu : first time I've ever had tiramisu served with ice cream. I think the ladyfinger cookies could've been more soaked in coffee because it was rather dry. Upon our arrival to Bowen, we drove by and saw how utterly cute and lovely this place was. With vines hanging all over the outside patio, we took a peek at the menu and decided Italian sounded like a good idea for our first night in Bowen Island. We got seated not on the floraly patio, but on the actual patio of the restaurant that felt private and romantic. We grabbed half a liter of delicious Argentinian wine and selected the mushroom ravioli with truffle foam and the Dolce Inferno pizza. Oh my goodness. That mushroom ravioli was Divine with a capital D. I could've eaten ten orders of that and not been sick of it. I was worried that there would be too few raviolis but the portion was decent. The pizza was a mix of salty and sweet with the caramelized onions which I guess I knew I was going to be eating, but realized upon eating I wasn't entirely in the mood for; however, it was still quite delicious! Superb pizza and salad at a cute little eatery with a gorgeous summer patio. Choose between personal size or large, which is generous, and an olive oil or a tomato sauce base. We had the Bella Funghi, which had lovely toppings (roasted garlic, mushrooms, truffle oil, goat cheese, mozzarella, herbs, arugula and preserved lemon for that extra little pop.) We overheard that they'd just changed their crust recipe, and whatever they did really sang - it was light, crisp, just a touch chewy but then vanished into a mouthful of pure flavour. Really intriguing texture that felt entirely authentic and made it my favourite pizza on the west coast so far. We also thoroughly enjoyed the Toscana Salad (pear, balsamic, seeds, goat cheese etc). Generous enough to share, and great flavours. The only low point was dessert, which we let our server talk us into. Pear tart with brown butter sauce. Somehow the flavours didn't quite gel and the base was so hard we couldn't even combine spoon force to cut it! They either don't have the same rigorous standards for their pastry chef or this was a feature that kind of flopped. Either way, a minor blip in a really terrific dinner. My friends and I ended up at Tuscany by chance because the restaurant we had wanted to go to was full, and I'm so glad it was! We sat outside on their covered patio, which was pretty magical. There are vines criss crossing overhead, wrapped with fairy lights so when the sun went down and they turned them on, it was like being in Europe. The ambiance was a big part of what made our dinner so great. The food was the other winner. We shared focaccia bread to start - not normally my favourite but this house-made bread was perfect. For an entree I ate the prawn scampi spaghetti, which was delicious and flawless. I rarely taste pasta that well cooked. My friends had the wild mushroom gnocci (rave reviews) and the pollo and pesto pizza (delicious!). Dinner for three and drinks was extremely reasonable price-wise (the same meal in Vancouver would have cost at least 50% more). Our server was fantastic too. The one down side is that Bowen is short on serving staff, so service was slow, but they let us know before we even sat down, and our waiter worked so darn hard, he was amazing. Fantastic dinner!!! What turned out for them to be a long service being a long weekend and guests still arriving way past "closing hours". The food was magnificent and kudos to them on their wine pricing - it's a great way to enjoy a nice wine as an addition to the experience without thinking about prices of the wines. Wow, is all I can say. I had never in a million years expected such great flavour from such a cute little restaurant on Bowen Island! It was gorgeous even though it was a rainy day, and I loved the exterior just as much as the interior. The service, first of all, was great and attentive - even though they were a full house that night. Words of advice? Make a reservation here, because it'll be worth it. We made ours just a few hours in advance, but it was completely worth it. The food was a bit harder for me because I had to eat dairy-free - or I thought it'd be harder. The server provided me with many choices that I could either alter for each dish and I had a great tomato based spaghetti. I ordered it thinking 'How good could it possibly be? It's just spaghetti." Even when it showed up, it looked underwhelming. I was definitely wrong to judge. It was intense in flavour and I still dream about this spaghetti to this day. I'm really harsh with a place that charges me high. High prices comes with a high expectations. And here they don't meet. Handmade mushroom ravioli was undercooked. I know it was as it tasted like bread left in the fridge a day before and it wasn't heated long enough in the microwave to make it soft and warm. It was brittle and crumbly on the edges. I'm really glad though the server did not try and convinced me it was al-dente and that she wanted to send it back to the kitchen to get it done better. I declined. You get one chance only, please get it right as a chef of an italian restaurant. Also ordered the meat pizza. I understand that there's a traditional stone oven in the restaurant, so I did expected much. Closed my eyes and bit into the pizza, the dough and thickness tasted like it was from dominos. Is dominos pizza tasty? Yes. Is it worth 17 bucks for an 8 inch before tax? No. You have a good oven. Make full use for it. It would make people want to come all the way to Bowen for just pizza. Go to a few places that serve good pizza from a brick stone oven and compare. I haven't had a good one in Vancouver. The best I've tried is in Dallas, Texas called Cane Rosso. For now a definite let down for me. The star goes to the super friendly server, Italian elderflower soda, super cold ice water on a hot day. read more

Took a boat out to Bowen Island for dinner on a Tuesday night and had dinner at Tuscany Restaurant. All the outdoor seating was outside at the front of the restaurant, like having a dinner party in someone's front yard. In fact, the restaurant itself reminded me of someone's home. Tons of unique pizza choices (ie. pear and brie) - portions are large, 6 people shared 3 pizzas, two salads and three desserts and we were very full. Amazingly delicious food and great service. We shared the Toscana Salad to start which was incredible. For entrees, I had the Prawn Scampi which I literally couldn't stop saying "yum" to with every single bite. It was as good or better then some of the top restaurants I've been to in Vancouver. My wife had the Spinach & Ricotta Cannelloni which was also very good with lots of delicious baked cheese on top. Such a quaint little spot! We tried to get food here one night and were turned away (20 minutes before closing). The patio is gorgeous with all the wisteria vines. The following night we came to order take away pizza- we ordered a small Diavola and a small Tuscany. They were pretty amazing- who would have thought pear goes well with pizza! We sat and had a coffee while we waited for our pizza, and ended up talking to the owner who was very sweet. We had a fantastic server in a warm setting that transported us to dining alfresco in an Italian garden. Our servers a new transplant from Vancouver who was quite personable. It's quite a nice, romantic lunch spot and if you get a perfect spot like I did, you get a pretty good eye-view of the whole patio greenery. With a glass of elderflower wine and slices of decent thin crust pizza, you pretty much make your own summer happen there. Or get a bottle of Prosecco to share and wile your afternoon away. Also, my tip is to order a large like we did and mix and match two flavours, instead of getting 2 personal sized pizzas. Much more economical that way. My daughter had the Tuscany pizza, made with fresh sliced pear, caramelized onions, virgin olive oil and brie - and she was smart enough to get a larger pizza for us to fight over the next day. All of the specials were listed on a board and - as delicious as they sounded - I still opted for a pizza! The Bella Venizia pizza was was everything I had hoped it would be. We were tucked inside a doorway and mostly forgotten by our waitress who seemed to be serving on an upper floor as well. We had to ask for basics like utencils to be brought to us, ground pepper and further drinks. Not once did she return to ask how our meal was and sadly our tip had to reflect this. Someone on the ferry told us Tuscany had recently changed ownership and were sad to hear nothing had improved. The place is lovely and seems to want to invite people desiring a high standard of food and service but just really can't deliver on either. Our hand-rolled pasta with clams in white wine sauce was ho-hum, can't help but think the teenage skater boys in the kitchen might need some more experience in the flavour department. Beyond that they seemed to run out of several things on their menu and just gave us a shrug and said "that's how it is on the island." Probably the nicest place to have dinner in Bowen Island! Within the 5 minute walk from the ferry terminal that is .. I really have yet to explore the rest of the island. Cute, shaded garden area in the front to dine in. Three levels of seating indoors, my favourite being the second level that overlooks the garden. Service was young but friendly. We saw lots of people walking out with pizza take-out boxes to have a picnic in the park... good idea to keep in mind for next time! They have a lot of daily specials on the chalkboard.. we ended up sharing the portobello mushroom appetizer special with goat cheese and mint, served on greens. It was nice, but at one mushroom for $10 a little bit pricey and not that easy to share. For entrees, I had the porcini mushroom and truffle sauce with spaghetti. It was really fragrant, topped with parmesan and they shave a few slices of black truffle on top - not really tasty, but the thought is nice. Also had the beef & ricotta cannelloni, which was pretty much a lasagna. They described the sauce as rose, but really it was a spicy tomato sauce. For dessert, I couldn't resist the pannacotta with strawberry rhubarb compote. It wasn't quite as light as I hoped - tasted more yogurty than milky. But the chococlate cake with lemon mascarpone cream was delish. The cake was warm, dense and brownie-like with a few nuts. Also had an airy chocolate meringue-like top layer. Great contrast in textures including the lemon mascarpone cream. Call ahead for reservations as this place looks like a local's favourite. read more

While waiting for the 7:20 ferry to head back to Van, my partner and I decided to have dinner here. We assumed an hour would be sufficient time since we ordered within a couple minutes of being seated. However, while we watched two tables who sat down AFTER us receive their appies while we were still waiting for our very simple appy of scallops, we were getting pretty impatient. When the waitress came to apologise, we knew the kitchen had forgotten our order. The appies finally arrived after half an hour and the dish was was a tiny portion of 4 scallops and one piece of bread for dipping. I am a big fan of Italian food and was pretty disappointed to see such a tiny portion even for an appy in an Italian restaurant! To think this took 30 minutes to arrive! We had already anticipated missing the ferry but no biggy, we can catch the next one. Unfortunately, the mains were terrible. My partner's "tagliatelle" was actually fettuccine and it was bland and definitely no where near the $24 it costed. As for my dish, I ordered spaghetti Vongole (a bit of an obsession of mine - I seek this out at every Italian restaurant I go to) - this particular plate was drenched with oil. I felt like I was having spaghetti oil soup. I also had pieces of macaroni and fettuccine mixed in with my spaghetti. Wow. Needless to say, I couldn't finish it. The waitress offered us free desert for having to wait so long for the meal which was great, except that the desert we chose weren't so good either. So for two big eaters, at this very rare outing, neither of us even finished our mains nor the desert. The waitress was quite sweet and attentive but I will not come back to this restaurant due to the terrible food. Please note however, that we ordered pasta has our main. Perhaps the pizza would be the better choice! The decor was lovely, the atmosphere was lively, and it was a packed house. Our waitress was great. My two stars are for those reasons. The dishes we ordered from the scallop appy to the two pastas to the desert deserved 0 stars if I could. It's easy to be the best Italian restaurant when you're the only Italian restaurant. Took my boyfriend here for his birthday. I made a reservation, as other reviews had suggested and made sure to mention that it was for a very special 40th birthday. We sat on the patio, which would've been nice if it weren't for the a-hole family and their loud, obnoxious offspring who repeatedly kept bumping my chair as they ran to the wishing well in the courtyard to fish for all the "free money". It felt like we were in Chuck E Cheese disguised as an Italian restaurant. We eventually moved inside to a "fantastic" table right near the washroom. My boyfriend's pizza was good but not that good. My pasta was good but again, not that good. What excited me was seeing my all time favourite dessert on the menu... Pavlova! The only problem was... It wasn't pavlova?! I love this place! I've only ever sat on the patio and it's absolutely beautiful. If you have the chance to make a day trip to Bowen do go here. On our last visit we were a big party and had pre-ordered from their set menu. Everything was fabulous. The owner Julie and her staff took really good care of our group considering our boat was late and we were short on time. Sure do love the roasted almonds with herbs and honey! Great to nibble on before your pizza arrives. This is a beautiful adventure for Vancouverites, especially if you've got guests in town. read more

The S.O. and I had a wonderful time at this homey (literally, in a house that has been remodeled into a restaurant) Italian place. We came without reservations on a Thursday and it was packed with locals, so we volunteered to sit at the downstairs bar, right in front of the pizza oven. I was afraid it would feel like a dungeon, but with all the hustle and bustle at the pizza oven and the sweet candle they put in front of us on the counter, it managed to feel both intimate and communal. We started with a seafood panzanella with scallops and avocado (fantastic) and continued with the pizza firenze, covered in thin-sliced potatoes and goat cheese (good), both accompanied by a bottle of 8 Generations rose (excellent). We finished with a panna cotta served with an apricot compote (good). Rose and panna cotta aren't items I typically enjoy, and the rose was particularly good. It was not cheap, but I'm used to San Francisco pricing, and it was more reasonable than most restaurants of a similar quality around here. After being recently taken over by new management, Tuscany has experienced somewhat of a renaissance in the last several months. I wish I could give 3.9 stars, but... After wallowing in mediocrity for the last few years, a new executive chef has breathed new life into the menu. You can really tell the difference when the vision comes from the top down. The kitchen has once again discovered that good tastes better when you actually care about it. A recent rack of lamb meal I enjoyed there was truly one of the best renditions I have ever enjoyed. Pizza has always been a dependable stock in trade here, but even the pizzas have improved under new managements watchful eye. The real fun here is in the specials, where the chef gets to flex some muscle and highlight seasonal and/or handmade things. The green olive tapenade is superb. Service can be a a little uneven, and occasionally clumsy, but these are early days yet. I've always been a fan of chef William, and it's been a real pleasure watching (and tasting!) as he and his family have worked hard to resurrect this Bowen Island icon. read more

Tuscany has new fall hours so the restaurant is closed on Tuesday except for carry out pizza. I had fond memories of having their pizza three years ago and was hopeful for a repeat experience. This was not to be. First, they did not answer their phone even though they were taking carry out orders. After three attempts we decided to walk to the restaurant to place our orders. Three wait staff type people were standing around chatting and when I told them I called, one of them pulled out his smart phone from his pocket and claimed he did not receive any calls even though I verified the phone number. This review was found on another site... from 2013. Funny, the exact same thing happened to me last night. I was rather disappointed with Tuscany after having a first good experience for lunch. This time we came for dinner and they were extremely busy. We took the time to call them to make a reservation but they never returned our calls and when we arrived they said we did not have a reservation. There was a long wait, and we were treated just like other customers who would pass by and say "hey should we have a pizza"? But the difference is my wife and I had planned this dinner to celebrate for a special occasion. Food was terrible. My pizza was thick and tasted like cheap burnt cheese all over. A few tiny tasteless mushrooms did not bring any flavor to the overly disgusting taste of the pizza. My wife actually enjoyed her linguine vongole. Maybe they just had too many pizza orders that night. Size of wine glasses is really small although you pay $10 for a glass. Only good point is the decor (great patio in the summer nights) and our waitress (not the hostess) was quite friendly. We might return for lunch or on a less busy night and maybe give them another chance. read more
