The food was average at best. We are from the Bay Area so we are spoiled with a great taqueria every 1/2 mile. With that being said, I ordered two tacos a la carte. One grilled fish and one veggie. The fish one had two tiny pieces of fish smaller than my finger (and my husband says I have kindergarten hands). The second taco was veggie which included beans with no sauce, a few slivers of peppers and onions. NO sauce at all, not even Pico de Gallo. My husband said his burrito was tasteless. read more

Well worth the detour off of the 101. Ferndale is a charming town all of its own. Then to find a modern lovely Mexican restaurant was such a bonus. Light lovely decor, music at just the right volume and classic Mexican dishes with a few wonderful modern inspirations. My mole lettuce tacos called Las Taxas under starters was a full meal. We took a little drive up the coast for a few days and had a wonderful lunch from Tuyas. I ordered the Shrimp Cocktail. It was incredibly fresh, and I appreciated that the fresh shrimp had been cut into smaller pieces -- easier to eat in the car! I also had the Chicken Mole in lettuce cups. It was very filling and again, very fresh. My husband had the enchiladas and taco. I had a taste -- delicious! Really good food!! We could have eaten outside or at one of the tables inside (spaced far apart, and there weren't any other people eating in there) but we chose to take the food out and eat in the car in an abundance of caution. The next time we're in Ferndale, I will definitely want to eat at Tuyas again. It was some of the best Mexican food I'd had in a long time. One thing I want to mention, though, is that if you're allergic to peanuts be careful because the mole does contain peanuts. They should really mention it on the menu! read more

Well, that was disappointing. My partner enjoyed his. Mine was very under seasoned. As if they're afraid to make Mexican food for the white folks. I had the shrimp cocktail. Very watery. We had heard how cute the town of Ferndale was and so decided to stop there for the afternoon. We got a recommendation from one of the store owners for good mexican food. He was right, the food here was good. We had the avo bites, fish tacos, and taco bowls. Everything was yummy. We had our 1.5 year old golden retriever with us so it was helpful that they had outside seating. The food took a bit to come out, but they were pretty busy and were probably short on staff, like most places these days. Just give them a little grace and you won't be disappointed. Salsa wasn't too spicy (white girl approved), ceviche was amazing and fresh, and we had the shrimp meal with house made blue corn tortillas... out of this world tortillas. Pretty good. The service was great. Fast and friendly. The Chile Verde was good. The Ceviche was about 90% avocado chunks, with onion and tomato. There was maybe two pieces of shrimp. Possibly the same shrimp cut into bits. So not sure it was ceviche as much as deconstructed guacamole. But priced like ceviche. read more

THE FOOD We ate dinner at Tuyas this past weekend and were delighted with the quality food, service and local characters we had the pleasure to engage on this trip. The chicken mole's great, fajitas are good too and the soup was excellent (get the bowl, not the cup!). Their chips and salsa are addictive and tasty. THE LOCALS A great place to witness the local gentry! While having dinner, this gigantic truck with a VERY loud horn, that sounded like a train's horn, kept driving up and down the one main street through town that goes past all the shops. We laughed as we thought it was pretty funny given the Friday night, small-town, youthful behavior of the person and the attention/discussion from tourists at the restaurant he was getting. There was also a tipsy gentlemen, tan, in great shape, with an American flag tattoo who was a bit raucous sitting at the bar in front of us. He seemed a little like a lonely rooster attempting to impress a hen (in this case one of the waitstaff ladies behind the counter). THE TOURISTS On our way out we had a great, socially-distanced conversation w/a lovely family visiting from Santa Barbara. My husband had a hat on with a specific town where they had a vacation home. Came here twice. I should've listened to my gut but thought that they were busy the first night. Second time, I was seated and I got the complimentary chips and they were interested in my dog. Super cute place. We stopped in while in town - yes, we are tourists and we are respectful of small towns being from small towns, and having been in food service in a tourism-driven town. We were very excited for delicious tacos after a day exploring trails. First, the house margarita made spicy was delicious. Second, the chips and salsa were good. We each ordered three street tacos without sides. The tacos were a bit dry (we had asada, pollo, carnitas, al pastor and chile verde). They came with a corn salsa and lime and we used all of it on our tacos. That's ok - we both ate them and were chatting and enjoying the space. I wouldn't post this review if it weren't for the bill. When we received the bill, we were charged $2.50 for each different meat, so $9.50 for one taco and $5 for choosing two other meats, $15 per order. (In fact, the list of meat choices, which we looked at, stated shrimp is an extra $3.50.) There was a small box in the opposite column and down to the right that stipulated an up charge of MP. The server never mentioned it when we ordered and, when we received the bill and asked, she was unapologetic...like we should have read the entire menu to find this box. It was very disappointing as we could have ordered nine tacos for what we paid for six. Please tell your customers when they order that there's an up charge for getting different meats so they can change their order if they want to. read more

The vibe of the place is really great, it's decorated beautifully, the staff are friendly and attentive, and while the prices don't reflect it (our bill was only $27), the place feels upscale. I ordered sopes with adobado and carnitas ($7.5). I don't even know where to begin here. The masa shell was soft and fried to a crisp perfection. The beans were creamy and flavorful. My only complaint was that I could have used more sour cream, but that's minor. But the meat. OH MY GOD THE MEAT... The adobado was the single most flavorful meat I've ever had at a Mexican place up here. It was perfect. It had just the right amount of heat without overpowering the meat itself. The carnitas were nearly just as amazing; giant hunks of beautiful pork, fried perfectly, as a carnitas should be, with bits that almost tasted like smoky bacon, or the ham that stews in beans that you can find in your grandmother's kitchen. Those meats were made so beautifully it could make a grown man cry. Fish tacos were delicious, and the perfect amount of food if you're just moderately hungry. Perhaps a hint of priceyness ($12.5), considering they came without beans and rice, but the mahi mahi was fried perfectly, and the homemade blue corn tortilla, soft and delectable, totally made it worth it. The chips were fresh and crisp, and the salsa tasted like it came fresh from a Humboldt garden. My only real complaint is that they were out of lemonade and thus could not make the only cocktail on the menu. We did show up right after opening, so we knew it wasn't likely that it had run out that day. Hopefully the stock will be better kept next time, because I really want to try that cocktail! We can't wait to go back. I love discovering new Mexican food, and this place has certainly stepped outside of the norm in terms of what we already have available in Humboldt. We can't wait to go back and try some more, especially the rice! read more

What a cute place! By the first step you can think "what a fancy place" but the prices are great, food is great and the service is really friendly! I walked in a Tuesday afternoon, jus two tables and me and my friend. I had the beets salad, that was delicious! So cute presentation, my friend had tuya enchiladas with the green salsa. And they got happy with us there and brought us the fish tacos to try, so amazing with the house made blue corn tortilla, and a side outta the pineapple salsa (it's not on the menu, it's worth it ask if there's some available when you go). The only think I would suggest is to work in the micheladas, even if they used the red salsa instead the clamaro juice would be waaay better. Our waitress, Holly, greeted us with a smile and an exceptionally cheerful attitude. The place was clean and had a positive vibe and Holly took plenty of time to socialize with us, sharing info about local events. While the portions were far smaller than what I expected, both its presentation and the quality more than made up for it. With that said, the restaurant itself wasn't exactly ADA compliant. This wasn't an issue for me, but could present a problem for some who have special needs, i.e., a wheelchair. We were just on our way out of the Avenue of the Giants and heard that Ferndale has some interesting sights. We popped into Tuyas for a mid afternoon lunch and LOVED it. Chips with the salsa were light and really good - our 1st surprise. Salsa and guacamole also very good. I got the taco salad with chicken with the cilantro ranch dressing. My wife got the chicken enchiladas with green salsa. A bit spicy but good.
