September 10, 2025 - Fortuna, CA Service was fast and friendly. We were greeted almost immediately, even though there was a line of people waiting for to-go orders. We seated ourselves and were quickly given chips, salsa, water, and menus. My husband ordered a Negro Modelo, and our server brought it right away while taking our meal order. I went with the Quesadilla con Carne a Elegir ($10.99) and chose chicken. It was simply chicken and cheese--no seasoning, sauce, guacamole, salsa, or sour cream--just the basics. The chicken was tender, but the quesadilla felt a little plain, and for the price, I thought it could have included a few extras. My husband, on the other hand, ordered the Chili Verde burrito. I found it too spicy for my taste, but he really enjoyed it. The seating was casual, and the restaurant was clean and pleasantly decorated. La Costa Mexican restaurant - September 10, 2025. We were greeted immediately by a woman behind the cast register who was also taking care of payment by another group. She told us to grab a table anywhere. We found a nice table over to the side, which was a little quieter than the front area. A young man showed up immediately with chips, salsa, and menus. He took our drink order. Our server showed up shortly afterwards with our drinks and took our order. I got the Chili Verde burrito and my wife got the chicken cheese quesadilla. 3 of us went here for dinner while visiting the Redwoods. The service was good. We had the nachos grande $12 and they were ok the portion was almost equal to the chips and salsa they brought out so not really worth the price. The chips and salsa were good. Great food and service! We went in around noon and I was surprised that there was plenty of room to sit. With great food and prices, I expected a crowd. We shared the Molcajete Trio and there was more than the two of us could eat. I imagine that two very hungry students could have finished it easily, but we had more than we needed. Came across this place before heading out for an afternoon of sightseeing. The building itself looks inviting by the way it's painted and there is a good amount of parking. When you walk in, it is a small establishment that has several tables and were told that we could sit anywhere. We were immediately served a basket of chips and salsa to munch on while deciding what to order. I chose the taco and tamale plate and the other two people with me chose carne asada fries and tacos. It got a busier while we were there and the server we had seemed to be the only one working but she was working hard. Our orders came out in about 15 minutes and my order was very hot and very flavorful. Not oily or anything. The tamale especially was was firm and didn't crumble. The enchiladas were ok as was the Chile relleno but nothing to write home about. The place is small, looks like a family operation and the beer is cold, food hot and service good. The ambiance is not much, but if in Fortuna, it's a roll of the dice, and La Costa won. What happened? Almost forgot to review? I ho back because of the fried tilapia fish that is bigger than the plate, ok, overhanging on the plate. It is crispy and good size for one person. It takes some work but the time spent almost forces you to enjoy the food. It comes with plain lettuce salad, beans, and rice. Salsa sauce goes with it. The food here is incredible - and you get a lot of it for a very reasonable price. A local recommended La Costa to me and I can honestly say it is in the top 3 Mexican restaurants I've ever eaten at in Humboldt County. The homemade corn tortillas are amazing, and the food is authentic and so full of flavor. It reminds me of home. The staff is friendly and eager to help, and the restaurant is very clean and well-maintained. We ate here in the morning and there were only a few other people there, but I have heard that it can get crowded in the afternoon and evening. The wait time for food is a bit longer than average, but I found the wait to definitely be worth it. Good food sometimes takes some time! I believe that you can call in your order ahead of time. If you're on the fence about coming here, do it - you won't be disappointed. If you live in the area, please make the drive out to Fortuna and give La Costa a try. What a gem. I'm a dollar general truck driver and needed a bite to eat and the lord almighty sent this restaurant down from heaven because this food tasted out of this world. I got the enchilada, taco, and quesadilla plate and I was NOT disappointed. It exceeded my expectations. I'm from Bakersfield and most places down there are Americanized with OK food, but this was a breath of fresh air. The tortillas are handmade, and the thickness of them makes it so much better. The meat and cheese was oozing out of the quesadilla it was so packed. The taco was exceptional and I loved the heat. The enchilada even tasted better than most which was surprising. I didn't think places like this existed anymore outside of Mexico. The food here was so good I will be requesting more US-101 routes just so I can stop here. You've made this truckers day. I didn't get to my burrito but My fiancé ate his and said they are really good. (I had to add the beans and rice to mine since the regular burritos are just meat and cheese which I found odd) He likes the tortilla A LOT. The tacos were really good, the steam made them a little soggy on the bottom but the flavor was (and I'm a harsh critic when it comes to tacos). The rice was REALLY good. The beans were a LITTLE watery but flavor was awesome. The chips were amazing but my sodium loving self added lime and salt. They were thin and crispy af. Overall very pleased. La Costa is like every other Mexican restaurant in fortuna, they would fail miserably down south but because they know their clientele up here doesn't know any better they get away with serving what they serve. I'm honestly surprised to see so much raza eating there. A friend bought me a burrito today from there the California I was surprised to see it was so full of meat but then the surprise wore off when every piece of meat was like a piece of chewing gum, took my burrito apart found the french fries were raw and yeah so I haven't bought anything myself there for over a year. Ordering take out from a place you've never been to is always a little bit of a gamble. Ordering food while traveling in the times of COVID is extra tricky. Luckily, this place saved the day. We were looking for lunch and saw they were open, "might as well try it", and so glad we did! We had a regular chicken burrito (my husband thinks it was also called a Jose Burrito?) and an Express Burrito. Both meals were delicious - heavy on the meat, great tortillas on the thicker side, and flavorful! I wish we had ordered a side of salsa for the regular burrito because I like it extra spicy, but it was awesome none the less. This place is always SLAMMED, so be ready to wait, especially if you're ordering to-go. However, the food is authentic, and delicious! Every. Single. Time. We ALWAYS order the cheese quesadilla, which sounds so boring, but it's made on a GIANT homemade flour tortilla and is sensational. Seriously. I usually order the shrimp taco and taquitos, but the trick with the taquitos is to ask for Grilled Chicken.. it's much more flavorful than the shredded!
