Wonderful fine dining experience. This is where my wife and I came to celebrate our engagement, and it was just the right place. This review covers our second time back since the engagement. Service was excellent and our waiter was very attentive. We got the 5-course prix-fixe without the wine pairing and our table was cleaned promptly after each course. The food came quickly, but not rushed. The restaurant is a little further outside of the busy old port area so it's much more calm and quiet, making for a pleasant evening. Here's what we had: Asparagus (everyone gets it) Garde manger: green salad and tuna crudo Appetizers: mushroom consommé and mussels Main course: halibut and New York strip Dessert: ice cream sandwich and chocolate tart We also ordered the house rolls which are definitely worth it! Great place for special occasions!

Our server at Twelve was awesome! Truly, some of the best service I've ever had at a restaurant. We mentioned that it was my husband's birthday next week and he even brought out a piece of cake at the end with a candle on top! It was very sweet and he was very personable. Unfortunately I didn't get his name but he was so warm, bubbly, and inviting! The food was also amazing and in my opinion was definitely worth the value. They have two pre fixe options as well as an à la carte menu. I got the five course option and I was quite full at the end, they do have boxes to take home extra food if needed, but just know if you don't have a big appetite. The three course menu might be the better option. Would definitely come back next time I'm in Portland!

I had the most spectacular dining experience at Twelve last night. Sat at the chef's counter and watched the magic of the head chef and her team create masterpieces out of every plate they made. The flavors were unique and more than just delicious. I wanted to eat more even though I was full. The service was just as delightful as the show and food. Twelve, I will be back and bringing friends. Thank you for an unforgettable evening. Cheers

I was here for my partners birthday celebration and was able to do the 5 course meal. It was amazing from start to finish. This place easily took the spot for the best restaurant I've been to. If you're able to get a seat at the counter definitely do that so you can be fully immersed in the experience. 12/10!

We decided to go off the set menu because we prefer appetizers over desserts. The onion dip was amazing, great flavor, fresh herbs and beautiful presentation. Emma was our server, bar seating, she was phenomenal. Vegan Cesar was okay. The beef tartare was a showstopper. The muscles were just meh, prefer not to have lettuce in my hot dish. The couple beside us had the lobster roll and it looked divine. The poached halibut was horrible. Just as it sounds poached halibut with cold cumber. It was very unappetizing. The New York strip was a litter better but something I wouldn't spend this much money on. The best thing about tonight was our wonderful server. Thanks Emma for being so amazing! She was the highlight of our night.

Crème Fraiche Ice Cream - to die for!

This was quite possibly the best meal we've eaten in years! The food was impeccable! Hannah's service was gracious, kind and extruded hospitality! Sitting at the Chef's counter was so fun to watch the team glide through service like a gourmet ballet! We're only visiting for the weekend and wish we could transport this restaurant (food, staff and ambiance) to our own backyard!

Food and service were amazing. Staff explained every single part of the meal as it was brought out how it was made, and what it was made with. This was our first time here if I had to break anything I wouldn't be able to because it it is already rated at 12 and I couldn't give it anything lower. We look forward to coming back again.. by the way we had Hannah and she was wonderful. We started out with the chicken liver mousse, and the carrot special. They're absolutely delicious. We both had the braised beef. Sorry I don't have a picture of that with the bread with a dessert because when it came out, it disappeared faster than I can get a picture of it, but I will definitely go back for that. Like I said, I would definitely rate this at least a 12!!!!! It's namesake. Debby and Ken

This place is the definition of fine dining and I enjoyed every minute of the 5 course meal. Portions were a bit on the smaller side but packed with flavor and meant to be enjoyed. The first 3 courses were so good that I forgot to take a photo which included- the asparagus, tuna tartare, and mussels. The 4th course I ordered the steak which was perfectly cooked medium rare! I got the 5th course (desert) to go as the flavors were so filling. The person I was with got the scallops with parsnips which were also filled with flavor. Even though we sat at the bar we were well taken care of by the bartender (the nicest Minnesotan with a blonde bob) who also supplied us with recommendations for our stay in Portland. A super fun location and great to walk to if you're staying in downtown Portland

M'y first time here and will definitely be back! Went for the abridged 3 course menu and picked the carrots and oyster mushroom as well as the chocolate dessert. The wine pairing was lovely and I highly recommend it. Everything was delicious ! Next time I'll order the 5 course version and try some of the meat dishes. They looked divine.

Worth the hype. We had an incredible experience. They have prix fixe and a la carte menu. We opted for the prix fixe. For the appetizer we all added the lobster roll and recommend doing so. One member of our party said that was the best lobster roll and didn't think any others in Portland would compare. It was so flavorful and melted in your mouth. For the main course I thoroughly enjoyed the swordfish. For dessert my favorite was the rice pudding. The ice cream sandwich was also delectable. The banana and bourbon was a very well made cocktail - balanced, not sweet. Food tips: Lobster roll, Parker house rolls, rice pudding Drink Tips: Banana and Bourbon

I visited Portland for a long weekend and chose Twelve for a dinner res after seeing some mouth-watering reviews on TikTok, and I'm so glad I did! It's an upscale, modern take on classic Maine dishes in a reallllyyy nice atmosphere. The restaurant itself is tucked away by the waterfront in a big brick building by some offices, but as soon as you walk inside, you're greeted by an inviting space that's somehow both warm and cozy and super modern at the same time. There's an open kitchen (which I always love) with Chef's counter seating if you're looking for a little more of an experience. Twelve offers both fixed price and al la carte menus, and not everyone at the table has to choose the same option. We had been eating our way through Portland all weekend, so we opted for a la carte for a bit of a lighter, more shareable option. We started with a round of dirty martinis (which I consider myself a bit of an expert on) and were super happy with them. The wine and beer selection for our second round was great too. For our meal, we basically treated it like small plates and split the Chips & Dip, Parker House Rolls, Mussels, Tuna Crudo, and NY strip. Absolutely everything was a must try (especially the mussels with squid ink pasta and the tuna.... still drooling over both!) with the exception of the steak. For a place as good (and as pricey...) as Twelve, I just had much higher expectations for their NY strip. It was under-seasoned and pretty boring in my opinion, but definitely not bad enough to sour the whole experience. Overall, I'd sat Twelve lives up to the hype. Quality, creative food and drinks in a beautiful setting, doesn't get much better than that.

It's taken me a full week to find the right words to describe my experience at Twelve, because I'm still reeling from how extraordinary it was. Without question, this is the most delicious restaurant I've ever been.If they havent already, I truly believe they're on their way to earning a Michelin star. The service was impeccable and the atmosphere was effortlessly cool and comfortable. Too often, fine dining focuses on presentation over flavor, but Twelve achieves the rare balance of both. Every dish was a masterpiece, perfectly executed, beautifully plated and delivered to our table in unison. We opted for the pre fixe menu with the elevated wine pairing. With the first taste of the amuse-bouche, we knew we were in for a real treat. Every course told its own story and brought more joy than the one before. The in-house sommelier elevated the experience even further by pairing each course with wines that complemented every bite. This wasn't just a dinner, it was an experience. The kind that lingers with you long after the last course. Twelve is a culinary gem that makes me wish I lived in Maine just to eat there more often.

Had an incredible dinner at Twelve! I sat at the chefs counter and ordered from the prix fixe menu - Delicata squash, lobster roll, NY steak, and chocolate mousse. The appetizer squash was one of my favorite things!! I understand this is seasonal but I would order this every time. The poblano sauce is incredible. The lobster roll is 100% worth the up charge!! My first bite I couldn't believe someone could make a lobster roll that good. Ambiance is wonderful for an intimate dinner with friends or a date night. I highly recommend a reservation at the chefs counter, it was so fun watching them make this delicious food. Service is so friendly, a tad slow, but I only think I noticed because I dined solo. Overall I highly recommend and wish I lived closer!

Per the website you book reservations through they accept them 30 days out.

How often does the menu change? I was there in July and now returning to Portland in October and would love to go back.

I asked a member of the staff today during my time dining in. They said it changes seasonally and had a rough estimate of around 4 times a year the menu will change. Going during a different season is your best shot at a different menu.

So, we decided to sneak over here after a busy morning at the lighthouse with our toddler for a nice, filling lunch before a later flight home. We must've gotten lucky on a Sunday bc our wait for three people was about 15-20 minutes quoted and we spent 10 minutes walking the block to entertain our toddler, came back to check-in and our table was ready! yay! We had a great table in the corner by the window which was excellent with our toddler. Our server, Brian, was wonderful and super friendly. Menu isn't huge but, has enough stuff that should be able to please most. We chose a small fry with the daily dip which was almost like a mayo-based honey mustard dijon and was delicious, with ketchup and vinegar for dipping. Fries were crispy and delicious. We got the green salad and the Cuban to split and loved both. The sandwich was delicious and the green salad was light and refreshing with some really yummy herbs on top to include fennel which isn't usually on a salad but I loved the taste for this one, worked perfectly with the dressing. My husband ordered their house-made cherry soda and let me tell you, best cherry soda of my life! We ordered two bc I drank about half of it. They have a charming outdoor patio area with about 3-4 other tables. Charming spot - def. recommend! Wait can get super long - by the time we left they were quoting over an hour for a table since it's smaller inside and large parties can take up almost all the spaces.

Great food, fun atmosphere, and a menu that makes you want to come back and try more. We'll absolutely be returning!

I'm not going to lie to you: Scales is one of my favorites. Even on an "off night," they're still…read moregood. I've never left regretting the money I spent on a meal that fueled my body and soul. This past week, I was reborn into my love affair with Scales. I booked a Tuesday night with my partner to celebrate an accomplishment with him. As we sat down, we were met with the warmest welcome back I've ever had at Scales. The perfect start to a perfect night. I'm usually a girl who's obsessed with their clover rolls, but we decided to skip the bread course this time. Instead, we ordered our favorite: the crab fritters with tartar sauce instead of remoulade, as they had been served in the past. They were light, crispy, and filled with crab. Perfection. The raw dishes were next. The tuna tartare is my favorite and just melted in my mouth. The black garlic sauce is everything (always ask for extra!). My guy loved the tuna crudo, as well as the ceviche. My main was perfection. The potato-crusted cod was light and bright, crunchy, and practically melted in my mouth. It was the perfect balance needed for a truly encompassing meal. The steak dish my partner ordered was equally outstanding. The potatoes were exceptional, and the steak was cooked perfectly! There's a reason we visit here at least once every few months. This meal solidified that we always make the right choice. Thank you, Scales! Can't wait to see you again soon!

Came in with high expectations because of all the hype, but unfortunately, this was a very mid…read moreexperience from food to service. Reservations are notoriously hard to get, so if you're determined to try it, book well in advance. Clover Leaf Roll: Essentially a garlic-sweet bun, like an elevated bread service, but made to order for $6.50. Decent, but not worth the hype. Clam Chowder: Easily the weakest dish. Tasted like supermarket clam chowder, which is not what I expected at an upscale restaurant. Maine Mussels: Fresh mussels, average sauce. Fine, but forgettable. Grilled Octopus: Best dish of the night. Tender octopus with a fantastic nutty sauce. This one actually delivered. Whole Grilled Branzino: Beautifully fresh fish, but painfully bland. Basically butter on fish with little else going on. The tableside deboning was a nice touch, though. Bavette Steak: Worst dish of the night. Ordered medium, received medium-rare, and the astringent sauce made the steak taste off. Service was even more disappointing. We had to flag someone down for almost everything, including silverware. For a restaurant positioned as upscale, that level of attentiveness simply wasn't there. Overall, the ingredients were fresh, but the flavors lacked impact and the service fell short. With this much hype and these reservation difficulties, I expected a lot more.
