They have a great selection of teas and a decent selection of sheesha for the hookahs. Do not try the Moroccan tea if you know what Moroccan tea tastes like. They have a different recipe, although I wouldn't say it is terrible--just not what Moroccan tea fans would expect. I've only been there once about a month ago and the 40 year old hippy that was working there didn't have much of a work ethic. There were about 4 tables taken out of the whole place, so it wasn't packed at all. We tipped him in advance (because you pay for everything at the counter) and as soon as he dropped off our tea pot and hookah, that was it. He never came back to turn over/ash the coal, ask if we needed anything. Actually, as soon as he'd leave a teapot or hookah at someone's table, he'd rush back in with no eye contact so no one could dare ask him for anything. I don't know if I see myself really going out of my way to come here again, but I definitely won't tip if it's the old hippy working the counter. I am a bit of a wannabe artist, I don't like eating meat, and I feel most comfortable in subdued, quiet, unique locations. Twisted Tea Bazaar fits the bill perfectly. The first thing you see when you walk in is this huge twisted tree, which just sets off the tone right there. It's like, "BAM, prepare to enter into the world you wished you lived in, the 'We don't need a suit and tie to be alive, man' kind of world." There are, of course, tons of tea options, both caffeine and decaf. Personally, the list was just too big for me, so I always ask them to order me what they think I'll like. I'm never disappointed. They bring you a really big tea kettle. I'm a big guy and just eat like a vacuum, but even my friend and I couldn't finish all of the tea. So you definitely get your money's worth with the tea. The food is pretty good. I mean, I bet it is the weaker part of the experience, but I've only had the falafel (twice) and it was ok. I'm a serious falafel afficionado though so don't listen to me. The food was good and of course hipster and healthy. This is the place to go for a quiet first date, or just a quiet meeting (I've seen people doing business meetings there!). One of the first places I ever went to in Charlottesville was the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar. It was so awesome back in the day (i.e. four years ago), but since then has changed ownership and shifted furniture and changed food specials. Still however, to comment on the current state of the Tea Bazaar I would still give it a high rating for being a great place to come and chill. Going here during lunch hours on a weekday is one of the most relaxing things you can do on the downtown mall. The lunch specials have gone up in price ($6.50) but they are still a great deal! The mezza platter has dates, hummus, pita, cashews, olives, cheese, and stuffed grape leaves, and the sandwiches come with big salads that have delicious candied walnuts and golden raisins on top. Even with the new seating arrangements (and the loss of the big huge comfy couch area! : ( ) you can enjoy fun low tables to sit on near the front, an awesome outdoor porch in the back, and if you're lucky that private table that's in the nook spot. You can also get hookahs here that are fun to smoke with a bunch of friends and the teas are good ($5-6 a pot). They still have shows there which is awesome, since all the venues in Cville are closing!! So, overall, even though it used to be better, the Tea House is still a really great place to eat and hang out. read more

This place seems to have changed ownership since I was a student in 2006. The sign on the front is less artsy, the name appears to have lost the "Twisted Branch" prefix, the lunch specials are more expensive ($6.50 instead of $5) with smaller portions (the salad used to be like twice as big), the staff seem less... subversive, and it looks like they've opened a location in Staunton. Is Tea Bazaar selling out? Maybe but it's still a winner in my book. I would have given the old Tea Bazaar four stars based on the lunch salad alone. We're talking mixed greens, tomato, red onion, cucumber, candied walnuts, feta, spices, pear slices, and toasted herb-and-oil brushed pita bread. Do yourself a favor and go order this salad - they serve the specials until 2pm. I've also had the mezza platter which is an assortment of Mediterranian things - decent. As for tea, I'm no connoisseur but I've been pleased with the selections I've tried, especially the dessert teas. At $5 a pot (which serves 2 comfortably and 3 if you don't need much), it's a pretty good deal. The chai is too mild for my taste but I like mine super spicy and sweet and I haven't found a place yet that's as good as home made. Atmosphere-wise, this place is hard to beat. I think it tries a little too hard to be hip with religious icons and such adorning the walls but I like the intimate lighting and variety of seating options - comfy couches, low tables with kneeling mats, regular tables, high tables with stools, and benches outside on the deck. It's a nice place to chat with friends or bring your date after dining at the downtown mall - maybe she'll think you're cool. read more

I have mixed reviews about the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar*, but I'm going to give it 5 stars because I think it's an experience everyone should have at least once. I love this place, but I hate it too. Let me explain. You walk up the stairs to enter a dimly lit room full of exotic decorations with a hint of smoke in the air. Pick up one of their big menus and try to get one of the low tables towards the front (especially if you're planning to get a hookah and want the full experience, sitting on a pillow on the floor with your shoes off), or try to nab the best seat in the house, the little alcove shrouded with a beaded curtain towards the back. I think they got rid of the plush couches piled with colorful pillows in recent years, but that was always the third best location. For a secret rendezvous, meet up in the very back, down the hall and past the bathrooms, beside the back porch. I almost always went just for a pot of tea. They have a great selection of Chinese and Japanese teas; blacks, greens, whites, pue-erhs, oolongs, rooibos, herbals; hot and cold. Ask your server if you're feeling overwhelmed--they know their teas, and they can give you recommendations or answer any questions you might have. They're often out of teas though, so when you're ready to order, make sure you have a couple of back-up choices. Make it a point to try something new every time! The tea comes in cute little pots with small cups, each set unique. Their teaware seems to be a collection of sets gathered over the years, rather than a big set purchased for the sole purpose of opening a tea house. This, and the punk-ish cooks and servers in the open kitchen area, makes it feel like you're just visiting a friend at their home. I've only eaten here once, for lunch, and they have a good selection of healthy vegetarian food. I had some delicious hummus with herb-y pita and fresh crunchy vegetables. The Twisted Branch has character, no doubt about it. And now I'll explain the negatives. There is a certain atmosphere here that always, without fail, gives me a headache. Maybe it's the sickly sweet-smelling smoke emanating from the flavored-tobacco filled hookahs. But most likely it's the loud discordant music that is either playing over the speakers, or even louder, by the live punk band at the front. I've no problem with loud music, but the combination is too much. I once sat crammed in a stiff wooden chair, with my legs all twisted under the table, while a large red-bearded man playing a trumpet/accordion/drum contraption paraded back and forth past me. Each time he took a step, his leg caused a mallet to pound the drum he was wearing on his back, and this mallet literally nearly pounded my ear every time he passed. This was not a nice experience. When you go into the Tea Bazaar, you feel cool. You feel like you've entered some alternative world, and it's the kind of place you'd like to think you belong in. You're unique, fascinating, creative, and intellectual. You feel like you should be talking about the existence of God and pondering the meaning of life... ...or you could just go to catch up with friends. During the week is your best bet for a quiet cup of tea because the live performances are usually on weekends. Quiet times are nice for a casual conversation, or, even better, a silent game of backgammon or chess. (You may need to use coins or other doodads to fill in the missing pieces.) Oh, and last thing: the bathrooms may not appear to be the cleanest or nicest, but every time I've been there, they always have the best smelling soap. I think it's handmade, or something. The tea bazaar is truly a Charlottesville staple. I remember going there in high school; playing board games and enjoying a pot of tea. My friends and I went there before homecoming my sophomore year. In college I was finally of age and I have one great memory of a couple ultimate frisbee team guys and myself smoking hookah out on the back patio. The tea and milkshakes and food is ALL great and there are so many vegetarian options. I am a teacher in the Norfolk area now and I still make trips to go back to the Tea Bazaar. You can ask the people who work there about the teas if you don't know what the names mean and they can direct you toward something that you might be interested in. I haven't been to the Twisted Branch in over two years and I noticed comments about management changes, which is unfortunate because this was such a great and unique spot on the downtown mall. Twisted Branch embodied C'ville because it had the perfect irony that this town seems to have: something found in a highly commercial prepped out area but so convinced of its own unique counter-culture that somehow it just balances itself out. Oh, and it's hippie; very hippie. But then, it's Charlottesville. The seating can be fill up fast, but if you get a good couch or even something on the patio, you can park yourself there with a few friends, get some tea or hookah and have a psychedelic good time. Stumbled in while taking a stroll on the downtown mall and incredibly glad that we did! I ordered a masala chai which was expertly prepared - perfect temp, perfect level of sweetness - with a slice of almond flour cake. Just a really cool and chill tea and Hookah place almost invisible on the downtown mall. If it weren't for yelp, I never would've discovered Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar. There's a door that leads up a rickety set of steps to an upstairs tea/hookah/bar/restaurant. The inside features plenty of hipster seating options, a groovy twisted tree, and some mild-mannered staff. Essentially, you order everything at the front and it is taken out to you (for tea and Hookahs). There is a back area and outside porch for the Hookah. My group ordered the Mint shisha ($15) and the Moroccan Mint tea ($5 - Gunpowder green tea with organic peppermint and sugar). I'll start off by saying that this place is worth coming to just for the tea selection. Our Moroccan tea was excellent - sweet green tea with only a touch of peppermint that complimented the mint Shisha. The mint shisha didn't have an overwhelming mint taste (I'd try a blend for an extra $2 more), but it was pretty smooth and easy for all shisha skill levels. I'm thrilled I found this place hidden among all the high-priced eateries. If you want a place to chill, Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar is the place for you. read more

The Good - Wide-range argileh flavors, and the employees are always happy to mix. My group stuck with Al-Waha brand and mixed the Honey and Vanilla tobacco. Our arglieh lasted quite a long time - a group of 4 people wasn't able to finish the tobacco. - Tea. The variety is impressive. We had a pot of the Cocoa Rooibos and Chai Masala. Both were tasty and served hot. - Atmosphere. Relaxing, calm - probably a great place to write a paper or do some studying. Very Near-East vibe, with comfy couches and chairs. - Service is good - nothing spectacular, but nothing terrible either. Employees seem indifferent. The Bad - Prices. Al-Waha brand tobacco runs about $15 while the Roman brand will cost about $18. Pots of tea will cost anywhere from $5-$10, and food is equally pricey for what you get. - Occasionally patrons ooze a kind of hipster pretension that bothers me. The Verdict - The Tea Bazaar is a three star kind of place. Nothing terrible, but nothing exceptionally cheap either. The hookah is worth the money though - I used to live in the Middle East, and the fact that their tobacco and coals produce a nice, thick smoke for a very long period of time means that a $15 hookah can keep 4 friends occupied for about 2 hours. I came here on a whim with some friends while visiting Charlottesville. You walk upstairs to a set of rooms with very evocative decor; it certainly wisps you away from the pseudo-city outside. Although they didn't have komboucha, we ordered the Tamaryokucha, a Japanese green tea. We were able to sit at a traditional table with pillows instead of chairs, and the tea was brought out fairly quickly. There was enough for the four of us to have a little more than 2 cups each, which was plenty for a pot that cost $7. Definitely plan on trying here again! read more

If you drink tea, you need to go here. Without question, you will find something you love and something unlike anything you've tried before (which will then likely join the former category). Twisted Branch is an interesting little place tucked away on the second floor of a building in Charlottesville's downtown mall. I must've passed it 2-3 times while trying to find it. When you get inside, you're greeted with some intriguing decor. When I came in, there were several people there, but it still had a fairly quiet atmosphere. It'd be the perfect place to come study or read for a while. Their tea selection was impressive. I frequently try to visit tea places whenever I can, and the only places I've found that could give Twisted a run for its money in terms of selection are places that are primarily shops for buying loose tea that just happen to also sell cups of tea. Twisted it the other way around, it's built for enjoying a cup (or pot) of tea and just happens to sell loose tea as well. In addition to their vast tea selection, they also offer a few beers, a small array of foods, and hookah. I ordered a cup of Clouds and Mist and a cup of Flying Monkey. The Clouds and Mist, true to its description, was full of numerous subtle flavors. There were bits of sweetness, earthiness, nuttiness...it was a very interesting (and very good!) white tea for sure. The Flying Monkey felt a bit more straightforward (it's a black/mate/puerh blend), but was also very good. The only "problem" I had it that they initially handed me the wrong order. I had two to-go cups, and they brought me someone's pot of tea. There was no problem getting that corrected when I pointed that out though (again, I want to note that they made what I ordered, they just handed me the wrong thing, which is a less costly mistake in terms of time, and a much easier mistake to make then getting an order that wildly wrong). I loved my visit, and only wish I could've had the time to sit and enjoy my tea there. I'll definitely be making this place a priority any time I go through Charlottesville. read more

I am sad it took me nearly 2 years in Charlottesville before trying Twisted Branch! My vegan sisters just came for a visit, and we decided to walk down to the mall to give the Tea Bazaar a try for lunch. We ate inside and played one of the board games they have, tucked up near the front windows that overlook the mall. The mellow, hippie vibe was a great way to spend the afternoon. Their food was delicious, reasonably priced, and "specialty-diet" friendly (lots of vegetarian and vegan options, as well as gluten free). It was so good, in fact, that we returned two days later for dinner! I would buy their salad dressing in bulk if they would let me, the tea we tried was phenomenal, and their cakes are worth a try if you are having a sweet craving. However, 4 cups of tea involved a 35 minute wait, and when it came the Iced Vanilla Honeybush tasted like water with a $1 upcharge for icing it. This is one of my favorite places to go in Charlottesville. If I'm being completely honest, Twisted Branch becomes like a second home to me over the summer. I'm in there all the time. Definitely a great place to go to chill out and drink tea for a while. The vibe is definitely more of a "come in and stay a while" feel rather than a "pop in and leave type". I wouldn't go into Twisted Branch without expecting to stay for at least an hour. This being said. It is not a huge place and sometimes people get a little upset when places to sit aren't available for the decent number of events that happens here. If you decide to come in during the off hours you can normally find a few people in there, all studying or sitting in small groups. Personally I gravitate towards a few teas that really stand out to a lot of people, Golden Monkey and Chai are the two that really come to mind as "Oh yeah! I've had that tea!". But they really have a ton of options depending on what you're into. I'm more of a black tea kinda person but I've also had their Blooming tea which was good, but definitely more of a visual thing rather than an active "I want to drink this" but I do know people who genuinely enjoy the taste of it. As for Hookahs, those things are strong. Tbh I'm not much of a smoker. I have had a few of the flavors there. None of them stood out as very different from the next. There is a slight variation of flavor, but overall you get the same experience from any of them. Personally I only enjoy them in a group of +4 people. Cause otherwise they get to be a lot. Smoking gets me lightheaded very fast. I can also taste it pretty much for the rest of the day after I smoke it. The typical hookah session itself lasts at least an hour. It takes a while to make it. From order to table it's probably about 15 minutes. It is also kinda on the more expensive side. Prices for a hookah are about $17-20 a pop. So again, I would really only get one if you're splitting the cost over it. A general note for the room- pick where you sit wisely. You're also not supposed to touch the hookah once you get it. Do not move it. I haven't had a lot of the food that is there. So I can't reallllyyy speak to that. However. I have had some of my friends order food that I have tried and I've seen the platters that Twisted Branch makes. Overall it looks good and what I've tasted is good. But I wouldn't think of this as a food place on it's own. It's definitely a tea house that serves food on the side rather than a restaurant that also serves tea. I'm pretty sure that's everything I had to say. If you're a tl;dr type of person this review in short is- Twisted Branch is good if you're looking to spend time there. It is primarily a tea house, but also offers hookahs and food. Last note! Please remember to clean up your plates and glasses after you're done with them. This is a neat little place tucked away downtown. The interior is really pretty and has a very chill vibe to it. They have a ton of teas and shisha flavors to choose from. Once they deliver your hookah, they are hands-off and they don't really explain to you how to use it - so it's useful to have someone in your group that knows what they're doing and how to adjust airflow/coal arrangement. My group of four got the rose-flavored one and it was very, very mild (okay, it honestly tasted like nothing). The tea is decent, but the customer service is awful. I have been here several times to enjoy a pot of tea while studying. In the past I had always taken a menu and sat down while I decided on what to order, but this time within about five minutes, my sister and I were approached by the lady who worked there and told that we had been there a long time and that we must order something if we were going to stay and work. We showed her the menu and explained to her that we were still making a decision, but she rudely replied that we had already been there 20 minutes. We again told her that we were just making a decision and she then rolled her eyes and walked away. Both of us are positive that we had been there for less than 10 minutes, so we're unsure why she was so upset even after we had assured her that we were going to buy drinks. We quickly purchased our tea, but it was difficult to relax after this incident. We left soon after finishing our drinks and the staff did not thank us for coming in as they always do. We did not do anything out of the ordinary, but this time it felt like we were not welcome. I work in customer service and I cannot imagine treating a customer the way we were treated at the Tea Bazaar. Sadly, I will not be going back anytime soon, but there are plenty of other cozy spots in Charlottesville with good tea and wonderful people! read more

I am basing this review purely on my first and only customer service experience I've ever had here. I never tried their tea, and I never will. OK- maybe it was my mistake to assume that this place had coffee, (after all, it does say "tea" in the name) but I've been to plenty of tea joints that also offer drip coffee, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Well, the simple answer is "no, they do not serve coffee at Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar" but instead, I received an incredibly snotty and downright rude response to my inquiry. With a deep sigh and ferocious attitude, I was told they did not have coffee and the girl at the counter was absolutely disgusted that I even dared to ask. With a belittling tone, she asked if I wanted a black tea to which I hesitated and, in complete shock of how rude the service was, I turned around and walked out. It's cool though- she didn't even notice because she barely made any eye contact with me to begin with and muttered complaints about her work day under her breathe during our entire interaction. This place appears to be one of the few venues with decent musical acts in Charlottesville and I really wanted to like them. I already assumed it would be a decent spot to hang out based on the reputation alone. Well, I was wrong. We've all had crummy days at work, but you should never take it out on customers. Let's be honest here. Twisted Branch has AWESOME atmosphere, no doubt, and a great selection of teas as well as hookah. But basically that's the end of it. When it comes down to it, their tea is more expensive (you can get peppermint down the street at Mudhouse for less than HALF of what these guys sell it for), their service often SLOW AS BALLS, and if there's a band playing, which tends to suck 85% of the time, you have to pay a cover even if you just want a damn tea to enjoy in the evening. There are lots of weird people there. Mostly a bunch of friendly hippies who would rather be smoking pot. But instead, they've evolved. They jam away to remixed Enya tracks on their iPhones and blog about the latest in ways to clean oneself by using homemade soap. Why homemade? Because the system is evil; and by buying commercial soap, you support the war against cute baby animals who will now be killed to make makeup. The hooka is good. It's overpriced. This is one of my favorite places in Charlottesville. I don't go there very often, but I enjoy myself every time I do. The food is a bit pricey but it's tasty (especially the salad!), and I'm not a big tea drinker but I absolutely love their chai. The menus are mostly vegetarian I believe. Their hookahs are nice too- I think the rose one is my favorite. It's a perfect place to just settle down and chill out for a bit. And like another reviewer here, I also have a lot of nice memories with this place. My first memory of this tea house was all the way back in middle school (2007, maybe) when I went there with a couple of friends on a day out. I was absolutely captivated by everything inside- from the decor, to the tea, to the food. Since then this tea house has become a staple for my friends and I whenever we go downtown, and something about the whole atmosphere has always managed to spark interesting and meaningful conversations between us, or at the very least it would create more memorable times. read more

As I was waiting for the final member or my party the spaghetti colored hair girl was very rude to my companion and I when we had only been waiting for 10 minutes. This is also after a previous incident where it aggressively implied that I needed to be carded to purchase ginger beer. I always spend a great deal of money at the tea bazaar but I will not be coming back if I have to deal with spaghetti color hair girl. read more
