Yesterday after spending most of the day shopping, at the outlets in Williamsburg, my wife, her girlfriend and myself were looking for some lunch/supper. We passed by all the "franchise" restaurants looking for some local fare. Well as we were driving my wife saw the "Two Drummers" building and said that looks good. We turned around and came back to a nondescript building with a few cars in the parking lot as it was only about 4:00 in the afternoon.WE WERE IN FOR A PLEASANT SURPRISE!!! This place is GREAT, all their meats are smoked low and slow on site, pulled pork, beef brisket, pork ribs, pork belly, blackened tuna and chicken just to name a few. They offer combination meals, our waitress suggested this and it was not disappointing at all. I got the cherry smoked pulled pork with beef brisket others got the pulled pork with ribs and then a pulled pork sandwich. We "shared" our food all around the table. They have three of their homemade bbq sauces on the table for you to choose from. Let me tell you there was enough for all to enjoy just from the two dinners which came with TWO HOMEMADE SIDES EACH AND A SERVING OF CORNBREAD. When you go here be sure to try the Cheddar Grit Cake it's like a potato cake but made with cheese grits DELICIOUS. Homemade desserts are offered if you still have room we got the Apple Crisp and Cherry Crumble. Went for the first time and found it to be underwhelming. Service was average. I ordered the 3 meat combo and took the server's recommendation of brisket, pulled pork, and ribs. Brisket was fattier than I'd like but had excellent flavor. Pork hadn't been pulled well...lots of fat in my portion. Flavor of ribs and pork were average...don't recommend. This is a pretty solid place to eat near work. Working in Toano, there aren't many places to choose from. There's Subway at the gas station.... and S'barro at the gas station. We had a work team event last Friday with a set menu, so I can only speak to that. I had the both the pulled chicken and pulled pork with the hottest of the sauces they offer. The sauce was tomato based and very good, but not as spicy as this girl likes. The mac and cheese was delicious! I was pleasantly surprised by the beer list. I was expecting the Bud/Bud Light choices and instead I had a Lickinghole Creek Black IPA. If you are out Toano way, I would give them a try - just don't make a special trip for it. read more

We really enjoyed our dinner tonight. A friend recommended...a good recommendation indeed. Casual, country place...very relaxed. We both ordered combo plates...2 meats, 2 sides, cornbread. I ordered the cherry smoked pulled pork, and the smoked pork belly. Yum! My husband ordered the pulled pork and the brisket...his plate was FULL. The thing I like best? The meat is smoked, but the smoke is not overpowering. You know what I mean? The sides were very fresh...obviously homemade. Great BBQ. Good burgers, stew, and country fried steak. Very good hush puppies. Came in early evening and sat on the back patio. Very good service. Son had the burger and enjoyed it. Daughter had the Brunswick stew and really enjoyed it. Wife had the country fried steak. Excellent collards. I had the pulled pork plate and four different sauces. All very good. The three taps three cheers hot sauce wasn't real real hot as advertised but full of flavor and very good. We'll go back for desert next time. Value for money - good Food Quality - Fair Service - average My wife and I went here for the ribs - we were not disappointed - the full rack was enormous, and the smokey flavor was outstanding. I had the brisket sandwich, which was not all that great. Not really full of beef flavor, and loads of fat. The sides ranged from average to awful. For example, the fries were standard restaurant fare, nothing to brag about. The 'sautéed' spinach was horrid; Swimming in butter and tasted like a pound of salt was poured on it. Beer selection was good however, and I had a white IPA that was surprisingly delicious. Service was ok - although not truly attentive. Overall, we'll probably go back to try some of the other fare on the menu, and would like to try the outdoor dining in the spring/summer. read more

It was super, super good -- dare I say even better than Pearce's! Small things kept it from being a five, but I would give it a solid 4.5. The barbecue has an incredibly yummy smokey flavor. The outside area was quite nice, and I bet would be super fun during the summer. An equal number of tables are in the sun & shade, so you're more likely to find a place you'd like to sit. My favorite was the smoked chicken. It was tender, moist & flavorful, not at all the icky dry sawdust chicken that is too often found. I only wish they were closer! read more

Lived near this restaurant for years and never went in, recently the family decided to take the plunge. Our first visit was 5 stars across the board. Service was exceptional. We went back the next week and the food took a bit of a stumble but service was still outstanding. We will continue to go back and work our way through the menu. Great BBQ a bit out of the way but worth the drive from anywhere in the Williamsburg area. Meats are top notch, sides are fun, beer selection is quite good, and if you are just about done with how crowded and non-service based Pierce's is, this is a good change of pace. Get the brisket and chicken, maybe ask for the ribs to be not so well done (a bit more chewy than I would like). I also liked the service and friendliness of the entire staff. I like it -- the BBQ platter I had (Chicken, Ribs, and Brisket) were fantastic as were the sides. It hardly needed any sauce...but the one sauce I tried (can't recall the name) was a sweet sauce but went really well with the chicken and brisket. Now for the negatives: - It's a BBQ place. The kitchen shouldn't get backed up so frequently. - And if the kitchen is backed up, at least let people sit outside on that awesome patio and have a beer (rather than making them wait inside with lots of open tables). They wouldn't hear of it when I dropped by so I watched the sun set on an awesome night 25 feet away from the bar. I would have understood...really. - The All you can Eat Crawfish Boil -- you always run out and sometimes really early (before 6:00pm?). You've gotta stop! And $15.99 is actually really cheap for all you can eat Crawfish...maybe if you raise the price the cheapskates will split and the real crawfish lovers can get some. - Never run out of ribs. I was hopeful this was a good replacement for Hog Wild. It's not. I found the service a little less than average. The food selection was pretty small and the quality was nothing better than I could cook at home. (And I'm not an exceptional cook). If this is one of the best spots for BBQ out here...VA has no taste in BBQ! It got 2 stars because the staff and the atmosphere made up for very mediocre BBQ at best. I usually always get enough to get a doggie bag, I just left it where I found it, the ribs out of a three meat choice combo was the only thing that got completely eaten. Their hush puppies were mushy and the coleslaw was just blah, and this was sold as "all in house" makings. Their smoke was not very smokey at all, I look for all the flavors when it comes to a Smokehouse, their meat survives because of the variety of their sauces and that's it! Sorry Two Drummer Smokehouse, it was just off beat, not carrying a good tune to remember. We live around the corner and frequent Two Drummers often! Mostly we order and pick up bc it's so easy and we so t have to drag the kids out. It is however kid friendly! The staff is always great and the food is perfect southern barbecue and comfort food. The macaroni and cheese is delicious as well as the fried Mac n cheese. The ranch dressing is AMAZING.
