I'd been wanting to stop in here and glad I finally did! This place is a true hidden gem. It is tucked away in a small strip of shops. Inside is a medium sized space with a bunch of tables and bar seating with a few massive TVs. The space is a fresh modern look. In terms of food, I had the whiting with sides of Mac and fries. It was all delicious. Fried to perfection, the fish was amazing with every bite. The Mac was good and I added some hot sauce for some extra kick. The fries were nice and fresh. I also got the sweet tea which was the perfect sweetness to pair with this meal. It looked to be freshly made. Everyone was friendly and I spoke with the hostess and chef for a bit as I waited and also after I ate my food. I will be going back because everything on the menu looks great and I want to try it all.

    Instant mashed potatoes. Why?

Long wait times, bad service and mediocre food. A nearly empty restaurant and our order took 25 minutes to prepare. The person that took our order disappeared and never came back. Somebody else dropped off the food. Had to flag down a person in the kitchen to get condiments, and drink refills. I asked for tartar sauce and received a single serve packet. No homemade tartar sauce??? The mashed potatoes smelled, looked and tasted instant. Instant, why?? This is a southern soul food restaurant and the best thing we ordered was the cheeseburger and mac n cheese. The sweet tea was terrible. It had an odd almost sour after taste. The order taker didn't mention that there was an up charge to substitute sides. Over all I was not impressed.

4 of us decided to make Munchies our supper destination after reading about their story in The Virginian Pilot. It's a new soul food spot that just opened this year. Wow were we impressed!! The location is right off Rt 199 in the Lightfoot area of Williamsburg.. super close to Ford Colony as well (hint hint - market this place to Ford Colony). It's tucked in the middle of a shopping center to the right if you're turning onto Olde Towne Rd from 199. We were there early so the place was all ours. The menu had us falling over ourselves - immediate hunger pains like... All the goodies.. it was so hard choosing. So we ordered waaay too much food 90's R&B hits swayed in the background.. we are not apologizing for singing Toni Braxton at the top of our lungs.. we honestly didn't have a choice. For a starter we picked the Crab Bites. These were just solid crab meat.. 5 crispy bites to an order and each one is a good 2-3 bites. The dipping sauce was a tangy honey mustard aoili (I think) - "the perfect amuse bouche" was uttered at some point. We all got extra sides. Because it was impossible to choose. Here's a summary of the sides: - Mac n Cheese - baked, classic, not gooey, DELICIOUS crust - Collards - mine had a big ole piece of meat in it and I was in heaven. First time trying these with Red Hot and I'll never be the same... - Green Beans - best I've ever had. - Yams - sorry mama, I didn't mean to do that it was was like a reflex - Mashed potatoes - classic, smooth and fluffy For entrees we got the 2 piece dark chicken, pork chops, and crab cakes.. everything was hot and crispy. Crab cakes were just like the bites - none but lump!! For dessert: banana pudding and cherry cobbler. Listen... ...we were on the floor those desserts were so tasty... And the portions were fabulous.. a whole pint container of each.. we asked to meet the chef that created the desserts. Sheldon came out and we learned that everything we ate was his mom's recipes. He had grown up helping her in the kitchen and is carrying his family's legacy.. how beautiful is that!? Very reasonably priced place also - appetizer and entree with extra sides was around $30. Can't beat that. Please check this place out. I will be back and I may even be inquiring about catering soon!

Fried chicken sandwich needs sauce and are those instant mashed potatoes?? With no gravy?

I'm fine with waiting for delicious scratch-cooked food. But when you add up the wait (~30 minutes for sandwiches), the mediocrity, the lack of homemade sauces, instant mashed potatoes??, and the hidden charges, it becomes disappointing. Let me explain. We wanted sandwiches, but they came with fries. We asked if we could substitute other sides and were told yes, we could have whatever sides we wanted. The $1.90 upcharge per side was therefore a surprise. Sweet tea was over $4 and didn't taste great. The whiting fish sandwich was tasty but the chef brought out a tiny packet of Kraft tartar sauce? Embarrassing. And only after we asked for it. This type of place absolutely needs homemade tartar sauce. The potato salad was just ok. The fried chicken sandwich came out with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles but no sauce. There was only ketchup and hot sauce on the table. I was about to put ketchup on it (yuck) when my husband suggested we ask for mayonnaise. It was fine with mayo but not what I expected from a soul food place. Also we are pretty sure the mashed potatoes were instant. They came plain. They offered me butter but no gravy. Odd. Our daughter plowed through her entire cheeseburger which didn't look any smaller for being off the kids menu. Her Mac n cheese was also tasty. The kid's meal was the highlight of our visit. Drinks were not refilled until we asked. We waited around for a check because we saw someone pay at the table. Everyone else at lunch had to go to the counter for the check. Don't get me wrong. This place has potential. Get some great homemade sauces and pay more attention to customer service and it could greatly improve. And don't serve instant mashed potatoes plain. I'm also fine with paying over $40 for three to dine, but only if the food is great!

After getting into the US from the Netherlands and craving some classic Southern cooking, we looked around for somewhere to eat. Looking at the ratings for Munchies, it looked pretty good but there were only a few reviews. After eating here, this restaurant deserves more than 5 stars! I ordered the pork chop, smothered, with collards and potato salad, while my girlfriend got the winglettes with green beans and Mac & Cheese. The food was beyond amazing! Cooked perfectly, seasoned like Mom used to make and the portions fill you up just like you need after a long day of traveling. Our server, Sultan, recommended the pork chop and he was exactly right on everything! Kind staff with a friendly and welcoming energy, this is the go-to place next to Williamsburg that everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, should go to!

I live and onions with macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes. Delicious!

Where do I even start?? First of all, the mac and cheese -amazing! It is homemade and the best I have had in quite a while. Second, the fried chicken is so so good. Comes out piping hot and delicious. Third, desserts- my first ever Carrot Cake. And it was so good. My husband had red velvet. They were out of banana pudding both nights we went. That tells you how good it must be! Yes, twice in a one week vacation!! And last of all, Fourth, the owner. He cooks all the dishes and when he gets a few minutes comes out of the kitchen to check on you. Super friendly and wants his customers to leave happy. So give Munches a try- you won't regret it!! OH AND THE 2 BAD REVIEWS BELOW- one couple. They are training new servers and they are learning. I don't know what the huge difference was in your food and ours, but EVERYTHING we ordered was amazing!!

2 piece whiting fish collard greens and mashed potatoes.

We found this place while on a weekend getaway. Everything was delicious, my hubby ordered the white meat 2 pc fried chicken w/ potato salad and green beans, the potato salad was ok, but green beans and chicken was excellent. He cleaned his entire plate and that NEVER happens. I ordered 2pc whitening, collard greens and mashed potatoes. Let me tell you, I was happy mad at how ridiculously delicious everything was. I could've licked the plate clean. We are very picky on how our soul food is seasoned, and we're from the country. I could eat here every day. I want the recipe for those collards and green beans, the mashed potatoes were so fluffy and perfect, I didn't have to add any extra seasoning, which never happens. BEST restaurant I've EVER eaten at. Will definitely come back. Don't sleep on this place.

What an old-fashioned gem of a restaurant!…read more Today my friend and I tried out this classic Williamsburg breakfast/Lunch spot and it hit the spot! We had a 20 minute wait for a table so we walked around inside checked out the gift shop. They have a variety of jewelry, food items, and trinkets available in the gift shop. We were seated after our little wait and immediately got our drink order taken. Our server was quick to come over and also get our meal order. I ordered the Melinda's special which included a drink, fruit salad, cup of Brunswick stew, two ham biscuits, and a slice of pie. All was very good and I subbed the Brunswick stew for the chicken & rice soup! I love how the ham is nice and thinly sliced and the chocolate pie was to die for! I need to go back and try all the flavors of pie! My dining companion loved her BLT sandwich and said the bacon was cooked nice and crisp! Inside the tables are all wood and the restaurant is located in an old house. It's quaint inside and all the servers are very kind. Will be back for sure!

The restaurant is located on Jamestown Road in Williamsburg in a cute building that was partly built repurposing materials from older buildings in the area, such as Carter's Grove. In addition to the restaurant, Old Chickahominy House also includes a gift shop that sells household decor items as well as pieces of ladies clothing, jewelry, coastal decorations, tea towels, and tea, among other items. It's fun to peruse the shop while waiting for your table. They serve breakfast in the morning and lunch after breakfast. For lunch, we really enjoy the Miss Melinda's Special. It starts with a little fruit salad comprising peaches and a slice of pineapple on a piece of lettuce, covered with a mayonnaise type of dressing and cheddar cheese. I know it sounds strange, but it's refreshingly tasty. You also receive a cup of Brunswick Stew and two ham biscuits. Delicious! The meal comes with a piece of pie, with your choices including buttermilk that tastes like lemon (yum!), coconut, chocolate, and a fruit pie, like cherry. Plus, you receive hot or iced tea and coffee. You also can carry out their menu items. I often order a container of Brunswick Stew and some ham biscuits for guests coming in late from out of town. It's a perfect welcoming meal. I'll post some photos too so you can Miss Melinda's Special, the menu, and the interior.
