This review is for the daytime cafe menu. It took me a few tries to figure this place out. I've probably been to the cafe four times now and it is finally a five star for me now. First of all, you can now sit upstairs to eat your food. This is key for me, as it isn't cheap, and being able to have a place to properly enjoy your food is important. I believe there are also a few small tables in the alley for outdoor dining. The first time I had the limited premium shaken matcha I was very disappointed. It is served sweetened by default, which is not usual for premium matcha. If the matcha is good, I want to taste the flavor profile of the matcha, not sugar. It didn't even cross my mind that a premium matcha drink would be sweetened, so I didn't think to ask for unsweetened -- my fault. I've since had it unsweetened and it is good, not the best I've ever had, but very good for DC. I had a harvest latte here that was also exceptional. The drinks are top notch. The charashi here are just as beautiful in person (more!) than they are on socials. More importantly, they are phenomenal. The fish and rice were perfect in a recent bowl I tried. I will definitely be back and think it's (almost) worth the price point. The rotating desserts are also very much worth the calories. I look forward to trying more seasonal desserts as they release them. In a world full of overdone restaurants, I appreciate the simplicity of this cafe which focuses solely on quality.

We didn't have any issues getting a reservation and came to celebrate our anniversary. While we inputted this into our reservation, there wasn't anything out of the ordinary of a normal reservation such as a card or a mention (which was fine but maybe a note if you're looking to celebrate other special occasions here). This was in DC so there was some street parking but always recommend allowing yourself some time to park if driving. Tucked away, once you go inside, there is a doorbell. They come down to escorted you upstairs. It's a nice space upstairs and pretty quiet, easy to talk and have conversation. The Omakase was a great experience and we loved everything we had. We also tried an uni tasting for an extra $100. Everything was great. While we didn't mind, it would have been nice to know the cost of the additional uni tasting and even had to ask for specifics on some of the sake prices. Service was friendly but the flow and timing could use some improvement. Delicious otherwise and worth a visit. The chef was great and was talkative as well with the guests.

I was walking to a nearby coffee shop and noticed the long line in the alley nearby. I returned and decided to let my curiosity get thr best of me! I showed up right before closing and was greeted with kindness. I ordered through the kiosk and in person. Yes, I made two separate orders after standing there waiting for the first order. I ended up walking away with a salmon hand roll, matcha butter mochi, and a seasonal drink. Everything was really tasty and Im so glad that I decided to check this spot out! Now, my experience is with the Two Nine Cafe located downstairs from the Two Nine Omakase restaurant upstairs. I love sushi and will come back to try out the omakase experience but the cafe spot was a nice introduction! This is an alley in Georgetown. Parking will be crazy but not impossible in the area. Seating outside the cafe is non existent outside of a couple of stools. It's a great meeting point while exploring the area, honestly!

I've only gotten takeout for their lunch deals, and the fish quality is great. It is pricey for what I would typically spend for lunch, but you are paying for the quality. The staff are great as well. It was pouring rain one day, and the staff let me wait inside for my food (the inside is closed during lunch hours). Even when ordering at the counter, I usually don't have to wait too long.

I've been curious about this place for a long time and I'm glad I gave it a try! Ordering at the window is quick, and I got the food within 15-20 minutes - it's all made to order. I got the unadon with extra veggies, and it was delicious. I love that they give you nori sheets to make little rolls with too. I would definitely order this again: perfectly cooked eel, delicious rice, and wasabi that really punches you in the face. The Basque cheesecake was a 2/10 for me: badly overbaked, unpleasant texture, little to no vanilla flavor. This should not have been served in its state, as someone who loves to make Basque cheesecake (the draw of it is the custardy texture with the burnt top: it should never, never be dry). The matcha latte was wonderful but definitely overpriced at $10, premium matcha or no. Still, I enjoyed it a lot - perfect sweetness level - and I'm glad I tried it! The cup it comes in is adorable too. I ate upstairs and love the little sunny counter space. Overall, very impressed with the eel and latte and very disappointed by the cheesecake, but I'll give them a second chance on desserts in case they were having an off day (but I maintain that it shouldn't have been served to guests). I'd be curious to try their hand rolls next time, or their chirashi bowl!

This is a review for their daytime cafe. I got their trio of hand-rolls and an iced matcha latte. I love their coffee cups and I actually have reused it for a while! Their matcha is top notch. I really loved the hand-rolls and they were very fresh, but it was a little pricey for a regular occasion casual lunch. I will definitely be back for their drinks.

My friend and I have been dying to try this place out after seeing their turtle shaped fruit filled pastry puffs and limited authentic matcha menu on Instagram- but after setting out on a rainy Saturday morning at opening to ensure we could have our top choices, there were no pastries available other than a premade mochi. Their setup is advertised as a cafe in the morning and a omakase in the evening, but the actual operation is very confusing. They aren't clear about when/what pastries are available and it was really disappointing to not have more treat choices. After asking the one worker, he wasn't sure either. We asked to sit inside because of the rain and were sat upstairs in the omakase space with no music and a flickering light. It was very odd. The matcha was delicious though and I hope to one day figure out when those turtles are there!

What can I say ... I pay for food + experiences... I pay, a lot. And you get what you pay for at the sleek counter of Two Nine's Omakase!!! Hawaii born head Chef puts charm and technique into the prefix experience that can be paired with a sake flight (or buy the bottle options) which of course we had to do. Opening bites of pickle salads and cuddle fish sashimi are inventively lightly sauce with familiar Japanese flavors of yuzu and ponzo. Then the sashimi rolls out. Amazingly fresh cuts of salmon, tuna, and special fish flown in fresh come out back to back. Like I said, I'm a huge fan of this style of cuisine and Two Nine is putting out some of the best quality in DC. The blow tour h comes out for some flayer and Kampei's fly as the sake flows. It's easy to make friends with your neighbors at the bar and the light banter from the wait staff and Chef make the space feel warm and welcoming. Post fish palate bomb was the jerkeied tuna veins which are hard to explain but so unique and delicious I'd eat a whole bowl of these!!!! At this point they could offer to sell me all the Tea in China and I'd scream TAKE MY MONEY!!! So if course the optional A5 Wagyu co.es out and I'm all in!!. Seared and served sashimi style with an adorable spritz bottle of a soy salt solution to taste. Do I even need to describe why A5 is so expensive??? No. If you know, you know. At this point we are loud, full and happy. Do you want to b loud, full and happy? Make your reservations now. You might even catch me at the end of the bar. Let's be friends!

Yesss. It is my honor to be the first reviewer. I've been following them since the pandemic at their Mess Hall days and then at Grace Street. I'm so excited that their custom built brick and mortar is HERE. The building is beautiful, hidden in an alley with custom made art pieces, they really thought about everything -so detailed. Online ordering is easy for their sushi takeout. Parking is a bit tricky but I promise it's worth the trip. Soft launch this week with their sushi bowls and some nigiri. Next week they start serving desserts and drinks with takeout. Their sushi bowls are fresh, beautiful, meticulous, and delicious as always. The Tokujo is one of my favorites... Everything from raw scallops to Japanese uni to a variety of fishes, pickled bits, mushrooms... The whole box is a gem full of bursts of varied flavor. They are not playing around. I'm excited for our omakase reservations in a few weeks.

stopped in recently to try the newish two nine omakase (haven't done the takeout or cafe) overall a nice experience and meal. fish quality was solid. uni quality was great. the experience is 4 or so otsumami, a plate of sashimi, followed by 18 or so nigiri/maki, tamago and dessert. the small plates were all interesting/good - seasonal ingredients, house made sauces, variety of textures and a nice way to begin the meal. the sashimi was good quality, loved 2/3 of the fish served. The nigiri overall was ok - biggest critiques are the shari which was served colder/room temp, didn't have much flavor and was on the drier side. and the seasoning/balance - many pieces include finishing salt, sauce, or some other component (fermented daikon, ume paste, etc.), and I found the balance of flavors to be off for a number of courses which ended up as a distraction from the fish being served. they did end with four quality selections of hokkaido uni, all of which were delicious but the two best (premium unfiltered murasaki and bafun) were very good. the pacing of the meal is good, the drink menu isn't extensive and leans primarily toward sake (sake pairing available). the two chefs were very kind/friendly as was the server. space is beautiful

*review for the daytime cafe* Love the concept of their daytime cafe with chirashi bentos but in terms of value and experience I was a little disappointed! First of all, I was surprised to find that they operate takeout only for the daytime hours - this is kind of my bad since they do say that on their Instagram, but I didn't see any mention of it anywhere else. The bentos are very aesthetic and tasted good, but considering the price I was expecting to be wowed either by the taste or the quality of the fish, and they didn't quite deliver on either of those fronts. Maybe the prices would make more sense for a sit-down restaurant experience but for just takeout I found them to be pretty high compared to different restaurants with similar offerings. We also got the mugicha barley tea for $7, which is basically the same price as a boba with toppings at most boba shops, only here it was just tea. They also use the same lids that boba shops use that are meant to be used with straws, only they don't offer straws. Because the lids don't have the little air vent hole, you kind of have to waterfall the tea to be able to drink it which is definitely not optimal, so I'd suggest they either look into different lids or start stocking straws. I know they are relatively new so maybe they just have a few kinks to sort out. I definitely love the concept so I hope they'll improve over time!

I can't imagine this place will stay in business. It is extremely overpriced for okay sushi. There are so many other places you can get amazing sushi for a fraction of the price of this restaurant. So no, I do not recommend. Also tried their matcha dessert with brown sugar and it was mid at best.

The review is mainly for the 29_cafe + Sunday morning beverage specials. I'd like to say the overall dining experience is quite agreeable, but the waiting time is way longer than I'd be okay for food. We were a party of 6, and I suggested to travel all the way from Springfield to this place, because I've heard the fish was amazing and the sweet treats are adorable, so I felt bad having all my friends to wait for over 1 hour to get food and leave asap since we had tickets for a museum later on the afternoon. Make sure if you want to try this place, either book the omakase or have at least couple of hours in between your next destination. I'm no fish monger, but I do enjoy fish (pescatarian here) and their offerings are spectacular! The chirashi bowl was truly amazing, every single bite of the fish was so delicious and fresh. I must mention the uni is definitely a game changer, it was pleasant and melts in your mouth, the taste was beyond any other (not bitter nor "briny". The toro was definitely my favorite of them all! These are decent size chirashi bowl, you might end up stuffed if you plan to get one of the desserts. I would love to come back and try their omakase when the opportunity presents! Since we came for the Sunday Special Cafe "find_cafe" menu, we tried some of the speciality beverages, the kabocha spiced latte and the harvest latte. Harvest latte is a barely and roasted corn drink, is slightly sweet and nutty, since we added a shot of espresso, it was bolder than I expected it to be. I'm a sucker for anything pumpkin, I must say the kabocha spiced latte is the most pumpkin-ie pumpkin spice drink I've ever had in my 6 years living in the States, the kabocha is cooked and pureed to perfection, it's really sweet and rich and warm, so good and addictive, I inhaled my drink once I got it, it feels unfair that the drinks only came in a small size (imagine the tall size at a Starbucks), even if I don't feel like having any fish or curry here, I would totally run for this drink! My only complaint is that when I got it, it was moreso room temperature than warm, but maybe it should be drank that way? I'm not sure. We shared the Espresso Choux, a very cute patisserie offering, I'd liked all the elements, although it could've been great with some sort of crunchy elements like toasted hazelnuts or slivered toasted almonds. The whipped ganache had the right amount of powder and sugar, I would have added more custard to my choux, the espresso is very bright and almost citrusy which I was very happy about! My friends got the fresh fruit sando, they were pretty happy with the cream, light and yet creamy like clouds! I would definitely plan accordingly to come back here!

The layout is interesting -- there's an upstairs when you walk in, but the sushi bar and a good bit of seating are downstairs. The menu is pretty straightforward with a mix of hand rolls, appetizers, specialty rolls, nigiri/sashimi, and traditional rolls. They also have a few solid combo deals, though I usually prefer trying a variety of items instead. Service was quick, which is always appreciated at a sushi spot. We ordered a few specialty rolls, two traditional rolls, and a couple orders of sashimi, all served together on one platter. The rolls were a great size -- filling without being overly large. The sashimi was fresh, and the traditional rolls really balanced out the meal nicely. The flounder and tuna sashimi were both excellent, and the California roll made with real crab was simple, fresh, and really satisfying. The total came out somewhere in the $70 range, so after tip and splitting it between two people, it was about $40 each to try multiple rolls and sashimi. Definitely fair pricing for the quality and amount of food. This spot had been on my list for a while, so I'm glad I finally made it over. I'd recommend checking out the menu beforehand so you can go in with a game plan and try the items that stand out most to you.
