What makes great BBQ is truely subjective...primarily guided by your location and personal tastes. Some expect it to be sweet n stickey, while others argue that it must be dry and smokey. Pork or Beef...slaw or no slaw...vinager or mayo... For me, BBQ is about the preparation, texture and taste of the meat. The sauce should enhance, never cover, the meat's smokey goodness. Any sides should complement the meat and stand on their own, but in the end, it is truly always about the meat. So on this point, Ty's has always excelled. We have tried the pulled pork without sauce. I like to try the meat on its own, sample the available sauces myself and customize it to my own sauce to meat ratio. The pork was tender and flavorful with a good amount of smoke. The smoked sauce was my preference. Overall a very good smokey juicy experience. The Iowa Tenderloin sandwich is huge indeed. While a fried, not truly a bbq meat selection, I wanted to try this Midwest specialty. It arrived, fresh n hot with just the meat n pickles on a jumbo bun. It was much larger than the bun, crunchy breading and the meat was very tender and juicy. I was told it is often eaten w mustard n ketchup. It needed neither. The clean spiced pork flavour stood well on its own. Then there is the brisket...oh my, this may be my favorite beef brisket ever. Slices of slow cooked, flavorful bark, smokey juicy wonderful beef, topped with, not swimming in, a smokey substantial sauce. This taste alone brings us back to Ty's whenever we visit Memphis. The staff is always friendly, the place is always clean and the sides are well prepared and offered in a good serving size. They will serve your BBQ wet or dry and will ask if you want slaw on the sandwich or not. They offer ribs, sausages, balogna, and chicken options as well. They have won multiple categories in multiple competitions in recent years. They have a brisk takeout business and a growing catering expansion. We had happened upon Ty's quite some time ago and and had been more than satisfied with the service and the food. I was especially happy to find what I always called a breaded tenderloin, their I believe Iowa tenderloin. They are currently the only place in the greater Memphis area that still offers this sandwich. A few months ago we stopped and got a takeout order of tenderloin sandwiches. Upon returning home we discovered that neither of our sandwiches had been dressed as requested. I called and mentioned this to the day who answered the phone and she apologized and offered to fix it if I would bring it back. Having already gotten home and sat down for dinner I wasn't interested in that so she offered me $5 off our next order. Tonight was the first time I'd been back since and I didn't even mention the the $5 off offer I'd got last time as I didn't figure the staff who were there tonight would know anything about it. After the customer in front of me had placed her order and stepped aside I advanced to the counter. Anna, the girl behind the counter, looked tired and was not exactly welcoming. We placed our order and inquired about one of the listed desserts. She seemed confused and the somewhat annoyed and walked over the the cooler and said no we don't have any of that left. The lady who'd ordered before me suggested an alternate and they did have that one and I requested it instead. We've all been a bit stressed lately so I initially didn't think much of it. I struck up a conversation with the lady who had suggested the alternate and we chatted about some of the food we'd had there. Another lady came in and was standing and waiting for someone to welcome her and ask her to step up and place her order. Anna comes out of the back and answers the phone without acknowledging the lady who had just come in. All of a sudden Anna snaps, "That was me" to whomever she was talking to, lays down the phone and spins and goes into the back. I looked at the lady who had just come in and she rolled her eyes. Anna only came out and took another call in order and disappeared in to the back again. By this time another customer had entered and was waiting behind the lady who was waiting to have have order taken, or to be acknowledged by someone who worked there or something... After few more minutes she let out an exasperated sigh turned and walked out. When Anna came back out front he placed his order. At some point there were a couple others that came to pick up a take out order. They got their orders and finally we got ours delivered to the table without the waters we'd asked for nor the dessert we'd ordered. I'd not been directed to get our waters myself and I had not as some places had told me that we couldn't use the drink machine out in the restaurant. After Anna left our table and didn't bring waters and after it was clear that she wasn't bring any I got up and got them myself. After checking the receipt and seeing that we had indeed been charged for the dessert I got up and asked for it. There were a couple more customers that came in and placed to go orders and they both had to ask to get the drinks that were supposed to come with them. My Iowa tenderloin was substandard and my companion didn't even eat all of his chicken. He said he didn't like it. Not a positive experience. The food was way better than the most advertised BBQ place in Memphis. Between all the members of my party, we had pulled pork, coleslaw, beans, rib tips, and a sausage sandwich. Everything was great! My husband was not a huge fan of the coleslaw, because the dressing was a creamy BBQ style. Everyone else in the party loved them. The beans had a BBQ flavor, and some meat chunks, a plus in my mind, but something to be aware of. The service was very quick, especially considering how much we ordered. I ordered the prime rib sandwich without bell peppers and two meats and two sides order or brisket and rib tips. The prime rib sandwich was dry and EXTREMELY chewey and dry, the edges of the "prime rib" strips were burnt and hard, and they forgot to put onions. So basically it was dry griddle seared "prime rib" strips with cheese and mustard in a bun. The prime rib strips were not fresh, definitely were a hold over from yesterday or before. The rib tips were ok. The brisket was dry, had no smoke ring, and had no taste. There was literally half of a teaspoon of bbq sauce on the slices of brisket. Terribly disappointed to say the least. Ordered food via door dash. Here's the good. Food got here fast and it was hot. Brisket was excellent as was the corn nuggets. Beans were pretty yummy although I prefer more of a bbq bean flavor but that is personal preference. The not so good was the ribs. I ordered the ribs for 2 and it was almost $30. Not sure if a mistake was made but the portion was very small and just about ok for one person. The ribs were odd. Big chunks of meat cut across the bone. Just not what I'm used too. I've never seen ribs like that. What was there tasted very good but it left me hungry and was supposed to be for 2. I also would have liked a little more sauce. So one meal was very good and the other pretty disappointing. If this truly is what they call ribs for 2 I would advise against ordering them and stick to their brisket. I would give the ribs a 5-star. The only negative was the coleslaw wasn't that good. The fries were good. The place is nothing to look at, it's very plain inside, like a fast-food type place but the ribs were super tender, very meaty and had a really good dryrub with a light glaze on top. The glaze was light enough to give the dryrub an interesting twist. (They have several other sauces to choose from for wetter ribs.) This restaurant is located on Stage Rd (Hwy 64) about a mile west of Appling. It is in a little strip center. We walked in and decided to grab a menu and sit rather than standing gawking at the menu board. I wanted everything on the menu but decided my best bet was the brisket sandwich. I ordered it with cheese cubes because anything with fried cheese has to be good. We were given our cups and went to fill our drinks and our order actually came out before we had a chance to sit down. Wow was I impressed with the sandwich. It was the best I have had in a very long time. Seeing I am not from Memphis, I got my slaw on the side, but it was very good. It had a great flavor to it, and I am not a big slaw fan. The cheese cubes, which interestingly were round, were good also. The brisket was definitely the highlight of the meal. It was uber tender with a spectacular smokey beefy taste. We tried all the sauces and the smoked was definitely my favorite. It complimented the sandwich nicely. Did I mention the sandwiches are only 6 bucks? All the prices on the menu looked great. The interior is cute. The concrete pig benches out front are a nice touch. When you you walk in your eyes are immediately drawn to huge collection of BBQ trophies in one corner. Stopped in on Monday after we were turned away on Sunday (closed on Sundays). It's a fairly new establishment, one of the owners said they just opened Thursday. They've got a wide selection of barbecue, from pork to beef brisket. Even something called "Iowa Tenderloin" which I've never heard of but sounds great. I had the beef brisket and onion rings. Both were amazing. The hot BBQ sauce is tangy and sweet with just a hint of spice. The slaw on the sandwich, a Memphis requirement, was pretty special as well. They are located just before the Captain D's as you drive away from Wolfchase on Hwy 64. Look for the hog benches! read more

This place just opened a couple days ago and I know that people think that Memphis has a lot of BBQ. However, I can tell this place is going to stand out among the best. It is in the old A&R BBQ location on Stage Rd. It is near my office, so we decided to stop in at lunch today. I had the shoulder platter with cole slaw and fried okra. I get a bit picky about my shoulder and this was fantastic; great smoke, tenderness, and flavor. It also had a couple pieces with decent bark and a beautiful smoke ring. I complemented the shoulder with the spicy BBQ sauce; which had a deep flavor with decent spice, but not blow you away spice. The cole slaw was fantastic too. It wasn't all mayonnaise, but still was creamy. It had strong vinegar and had some great spices throughout. The rest of the menu looked fantastic as well. In addition to the classic BBQ menu items like ribs and brisket, he has an Iowa Tenderloin sandwich and fried cheese curds. Being from the midwest, i love the mash-up of southern and midwestern fare on one menu. For those of you that have never had an Iowa Tenderloin sandwich, it is a thing of beauty. Ty has indeed won awards for his BBQ ribs, but there are more items on the menu that are equally good. I had never had an Iowa Tenderloin sandwich before, but Ty's take on it has become one of my favorite sandwiches - heck, the sandwich overflows the bun - it's huge! The BBQ is great, but the brisket is also as good as the pulled pork or ribs. I still want to try the BBQ Bologna and homemade Mac & Cheese. I was lucky enough to find this gem on the Chef Shuttle website (another fabulous find!). Their menu carries everything from corn nuggets to sandwiches (5 stars for their smoked turkey as it melts in your member and so tender it falls apart) to platters and combos. Your choices include bbq, brisket, smoked chicken, okra, corn on the cob (!), beef tips, rib tops, ribs and so much more!! If you are not already full (and you will be!), they have luscious desserts from strawberry cake, TX sheetcake topped with hot fudge, cheesecake and banana pudding. Stopped in for lunch last week, been wanting to get here for some time. However, my 1st visit will be my last. The best part of the lunch were the beans, exceptional. If not for those, I would give Tys only 1 star. I had the Monday special, BBQ sandwich, beans and a drink for $4.99, pretty good deal. As noted, the beans are fantastic, but that's where the flavor stopped. The sandwich had very little flavor. Half way thru the sandwich, I thought I bit down on a bone, turned out it was a very hard piece of gristle. OK, that gets in BBQ some times. But then after another bite, another piece - see pic on Yelp. This piece was about 1 1/2" long, sharp point at one end, and very wide at the other. What the heck, I'm glad I didn't swallow that, not sure what part of my throat it would have gotten stuck at, or cut,just glad I didn't eat it. There were only 5 guests there at lunch. Since this place isn't too far from work, I've been here 3 or 4 times now for lunch. Until yesterday, I've just stuck with the rib tips and fries (still my favorite). I tried out the grilled chicken sandwich yesterday along with their hot bbq sauce and it was pretty good too! My mind's tellin' me no... But my body's tellin' me yes to try the briquette. I used to get in arguments with my coworkers in Dallas about how briquette isn't real bbq and they haven't had real bbq until they come here. Don't tell them, but I do like briquette (still not above pulled pork).. So that's next on my list. Service has been so-so when I go. Nothing out of the ordinary, not not bad by any means. I am so happy to find really good BBQ so close to my house and you know your in for a treat when you walk in and there is a whole wall of trophies. My recent visit did not disappoint, ordered a half rack of baby back ribs. The plate was served with only a plastic fork and me so used to cutting my ribs to separate wasn't sure what to do until I realized that the ribs are so tender you can just pull them apart, lol I ordered wet which is my preference, along with potato salad and a piece of bread. Bottom line: Great food and friendly service. My girlfriend and I, who are both certified barbecue judges, ate here on 3/12/14. We got the full rack of ribs for two which is served as two half racks with two sides of your choice. We got corn nuggets and onions rings. We ordered our ribs dry and had some sauce on the side. The ribs were fantastic. You don't often get competition-quality food at restaurants, even in Memphis, but these were damn close. There was fantastic smoke flavor and they were juicy and just about perfectly cooked. A lot of places overcook their ribs, and a lot of people think that fall-off-the-bone ribs are properly cooked. The best ribs will retain their texture, not fall off the bone, but will come away cleanly when bitten and will be very tender and juicy. Overcooked, fall-off-the-bone ribs are drier and less flavorful. I realize that food tastes are subjective, and I think sauce is probably most inclined to be so. Ty's offers three options - hot, smoky, and original. I think all three are pretty good. The best was the smoky, which is odd because I normally don't like them. The hot isn't really all that hot, but there is a lot of spice in it and the original is pretty much just the smoky without the smoke flavor. It is decently balanced between sweet and tangy. We spoke with Ty for a good while after and he recommended trying the ribs wet - he only puts a light glaze on them - and also said to try the smoked turkey breast. I'm looking forward to making the rounds of this menu. I easily rank these ribs up there with Cozy Corner and Bar-B-Q Shop - which are the first places I recommend any time someone new to the area wants to know where to go for good barbecue. read more

I think they may have recently had a change in ownership or management. My husband and l have had carryout here since they opened at least once weekly. The past few weeks their counter clerks have been inattentive to order details and their food, in general, has been over-done and helpings have become skimpy. Even their prices have gone up. For the meats we chose brisket and chicken and ordered the ribs half-n-half (half wet, half dry). All the meats were tender and juicy with just the right amount of smoke. My favorite was the brisket. I've never had brisket so tender and flavorful before! For sides we ordered coleslaw, bbq beans, and added mac-n-cheese. All were delicious, but let me tell you, that mac was killer! So good, I ordered a side to go so that I could snack on it once we got back to the hotel. The place was clean and pretty quiet (maybe because we came at 7:30 on a Tuesday). After driving from Knoxville to Lynchburg and finally arriving in Memphis it was time for the family to begin the dreaded "where do you want to eat?". We consulted the yelp app once again. Deciding on BBQ we found out there were plenty to choose from. We choose Ty's. I had the combo full slab of ribs (half wet/half rub) with a side order of Mac n cheese. The dry rub was the winner in my opinion. The mac n cheese was a little over cooked hence the 4 stars. The staff was great didn't need to ask for anything. The cashier said she would make certain the fries were cooked, they even note crispy fries on their menu. When I got home and checked order, fries were limp and greasy. No way fries were just cooked.
