Less formal and easier to get a last minute reservation is this sister restaurant to The Blue Duckling. Cozy and charming is this restaurant nestled in Old Town. Impeccable service through and through. Delectable was their "Venison Pate"; and, as expected, sensational was their crispy skinned "Signature Roast Duck", just as delicious was their sauce and white cabbage; yet I found the bacon rolled potato dumplings on my plate to be doughy inside. An excellent choice that is tourist friendly on a side street near old town square. Come for the duck, of course the pate was my favorite and the duck main course was great too. The servers are knowledgeable and friendly. Ask them to select the Czech wine for you, as you will never select correctly yourself. Love the wood paneled aged rings that feel historic. And don't forget to tip the piano player. I asked him to stop playing American songs like New York, New York and start playing Czech songs. It was so much fun. All the servers joined in. Thank goodness for Yelp! Now I finally know the name of this restaurant means The Blue Duckling 2 ;) I'd found them while browsing IG tags for Praha and fell in love with the decor. I knew we needed to dine here. We had a late night reservation on a Sunday, which I really appreciated as there aren't so many options for eating as late as we needed to on this day of the week. We had just come into town from Berlin and I'd run the Berlin marathon so this was a celebration dinner of sorts for the two of us :) We arrived a little bit late (10:45p) and they close at 11P and had no problem seating us at whichever table we liked. Service was FANTASTIC! from start to finish. They did mention the kitchen would be closing very soon so we put our orders in quickly. The bread basket was so delicious! After a long day, carbs were exactly what I was looking for. It was warm and tasty, with a variety of slices accompanied by salted butter. So good! and it kept being refilled throughout our stay. We shared a very nice salad and pâté dish before our entrees. We both ordered duck. I mean, we had too right? ;) Our plates were so nicely done, my duck had the most perfect crispy exterior and was so tasty and juicy. It was a much larger portion that it appeared and really filled me up. I couldn't eat all of it. I had a glass of Chianti which I thought was a bit random since I was in the Czech Republic but it was good and paired well with my food. We finished our meal with a raspberry sorbet which was a nice cool refreshing end to a fabulous meal. I highly recommend U Modré kachničky II. It's so pretty and romantic (candlelit tables) and I had the most lovely time here. I very much look forward to returning on my next trip to Prague and can't wait to bring my son here too :) Enjoy! This is the place to go if you want perfectly cooked duck. We made reservations in advance and it was good that we did as they turned away a lot of people tonight who decided to just walk in. We started with the smoked duck breast which was delicious and came with a really great sauce. Then we got the duck broth which was my favorite thing of the night. The broth was so flavorful and rich and loved the foie gras bits as well as the noodles. This is a must get! Next we got the duck breast with foie gras and plum sauce which was cooked to perfection (medium rare) and the sauce and the potato croquettes were so good! We were stuffed after the meal and it was just so much food. This decadent meal only came to about $100 usd! No way I could have gotten this back in NYC for under $150! Do yourself a favor and make a reservation for at least one of the nights when you're in Prague. P.S. service was great and liked the humor of the waiters! read more

What a restaurant! Frankly, I have been very disappointed about Czech cuisine becuase it was mainly typical meat and potatos. This restaurant throws my perception of Czech cusine. For an example, when I had finished their Czech dumpling in spite of my strong dislike of Czech dumpling, I realized this was not your normal Czech restaurant. Its atmosphere is one of the best I have seen, classically cultured decoration with traditional European antique treasures and wonderful piano music with classic pop songs sang by a piano player. Let's talk about the most important thing, food. It started with incredible butters, garlic and regular. But regular butter is what has taken me, rich and flavorful. Also, tasty home made breads. I have not even started with the appetizer. We tried the "taste menu". That is how I know their food is great. Tried three main courses. I will save my effort on describing the menu. Just check the menu picture. It was a big surprise. What a great overall experience! Food and service was outstanding. The wine was very good as well, local Cabernet Sauvignon called Gryllus. Had two bottles and took two home. Did I mentioned this is a duck restaurant? Their duck dishes are the best I have tasted. Bottom line is I left with a full stomach and happy spirit. I was given this restaurant as a recommendation by a local and have no regrets. They are known for their duck, which my friend had and said was really well cooked, but I had the vegetarian option of potato dumplings with garlic spinach and mushrooms. Wow, so impressed! The food was flavorful, and I was not expecting to find a good vegetarian option in a traditional Czech restaurant. Mushrooms were tender and a perfect accompaniment to the dumplings. Duck. Go here for the duck. So many Americans will not eat duck because it is "too greasy" which is utter nonsense and I believe that this place is the best way to convert them. My Wife and I have always enjoyed duck dishes, but were blown away by the differences in our two orders. The chef has definitely a mastery of the different preparations. The starter was less than stellar, not bad, but just didn't live up to the mains. The sampler platter was worth it though if you wish to try a few different items. It was sufficient to be split for 2 or 3. Interior and service are great. Unique ambience especially with the live piano. I'd try to sit upstairs vs. down as the piano could be a bit overpowering. Then they would let a snarky but funny comment come out that would make me laugh. You just gotta appreciate the sense of humor is different than American raucous style humor. BTW, we asked what to order and he told us what to get. We added one thing which made our waiter ostensibly cringed. And he was right. He tried to warn us... Reservations - make 'em. We tried to get in the day before (hotel called) and couldn't. So we found the place a day before and asked for a table. Food Appetizer Marinated sheep cheese in garlic oil with spring onion - 5/5 delicious with just the right amount of saltiness. It was a solid block and not a soft cheese. Main Course Duck - 5/5 this is what they are known for and you need to order it. I had the duck with pear and ginger. I didn't taste any ginger but there was a nice poached (?) pear which went well. Veal - 4/5 the hubby had this yummy meat dish and enjoyed it. Not as good as the duck but still worth getting. The potato puree though was weird and not very tasty. Wine We ordered the Chianti and it was perfect for the meal. More expensive than the Czech wines but we were looking for something dependable. Dessert This is where things went sideways and it was our fault. The waiter tried to warn us and we just wouldn't listen. I think he actually grimaced in pain when we ordered the Chocolate cake. My Mr. and I enjoyed dinner at U Modre Kachnicky II before seeing Romeo & Juliette recently. We had a top notch experience from beginning to end. Our waiter Jirka was efficient and helpful. We started with fresh bread and herbed butter. Yum. For our mains, the Mr. chose the rabbit with creamed spinach and potato dumplings. I had the duck with brussel sprouts with bacon, and potato dumplings. Both were excellent choices and we enjoyed sharing bites with one another. Dessert for him was apple strudel and I had a trio plate that included apple strudel, chocolate cake, and the most intriguing carrot cake I've ever had. The frosting had a taste of lime. I loved the element of tartness the lime brought. A glass of wine for me, coffee with my dessert, and two beers for the Mr came to a very reasonable $85.00 not including tip. The food here is excellent! I got the duck dish with plum sauce and potato pancakes. The plum sauce was great, it wasn't too sweet. The potato pancakes were delicious. I've never had duck that tasted this amazing. The ambiance is wonderful, it really makes you feel like you're back in the day. Service was good. I wish we could have sat on the floor with the piano, however the server told us it was only for people with reservations. I was a bit upset because I overheard some people come in without reservations and they sat them in the piano room nonetheless. For the first hour we were the only ones that had been sat downstairs until the upstairs had filled up. Aside from that incident, this place has the best authentic Czeck food. It might be pricier than most places in Prague, however it is well worth the cost. I would definitely eat here again if I was back in Praha! read more

This is an elegant restaurant near the town square, but off the main tourist stretch. We had a very nice bottle of red wine, the goat cheese appetizer (so-so) and the duck with creamy brussel sprouts for dinner. The duck was crispy on the outside and very meaty. It was quite good. There is not much in the way of vegetables or less heavy appetizers and the bread while served with two herbal butters is not warmed. The restaurant has a nice, albeit quiet atmosphere with a piano player who is quite good and added interest to the place with a broad range of song choices (Mama Mia playing as we left). I give this dining experience high marks for attentive service and atmosphere and decent, although not overly flavorful, food (based on trying a single dish). read more

Love this place and so glad (thanks to a maps app!) we were able to find it and return 12 years after our first visit. The staff are lovely and attentive but not overly so. Really nice atmosphere with live piano in the background. Bubbles to begin our evening. I ordered duck foie gras terrine. Served with an apple sauce. Delicious. For my main I had roast duck with a pear, ginger and shallot sauce. The duck was perfect, tender and just came away from the bone so easily. I asked for the mashed potato to be substituted and the server offered me crackling dumplings - oh my GOD they were so good. Chose a Czech red wine with dinner. Couldn't settle on dessert so chose a tasting menu which consisted of Apple strudel, carrot cake and the lightest chocolate cake ever. Amazing! We had iced dessert Czech wine with our dessert. That had a lovely sweetness. Finished off with a very strong Americano before heading back out to the cold Prague air. Great dinner here. It's tricky to find but I definitely recommend you do so. Heads up: we tried to eat here on a Sunday night without reservations and they were booked until Tuesday evening. We went ahead and made the reservation and were glad we came back. We started with the traditional Czech potato soup (90 Czech) and smoked venison leg with rowanberry sauce (195 Czech). The venison was delicious and the savoriness paired well with the tartness of the berry sauce! As for the potato soup, I think I will compare all potato soups to this one... full of flavor without "the heavy after-feeling" of most creamy potato soups. Entrees: wild boar goulash (390 Czech ) and roast duck with pear sauce. They were cooked to perfection. The duck did not seem as greasy as the duck prepared in the states. I can see why this restaurant is so popular. addendum: For some reason I see this review in my unfinished reviews. The Blue Duck 2 (U Modré kachničky II in Czech) is a charming 1930s feeling restaurant in Prague's old town. I went here with a few friends on a very chilly evening in December. The Blue Duck was the perfect spot, filled with lots of cozy corners and interesting old world paintings, furniture, and a weird obsession with ducks. Indeed on our table were several wooden ducks, with which my boisterous companions and I had endless fun. I was worried at first as the Blue duck is in the heart of tourist prague and has the requisite multi-lingual menu. However, the food was actually quote good and service was professional and friendly. As expected the menu is very duck heavy and it is possible to have all your courses apart from dessert with some varient of the water fowl. Indeed I had a duck broth as a starter and roast duck with dumplings. The wait staff was more than accommodating and substituted dumplings for pancakes. The pancakes seemed more like rolled potatoes, but the duck was tasty and clearly the centerpiece of the dish. Prices were high for Prague, though not outlandish by international standards. The multi-course tasting menu was under 1000 crowns or about £33. All in, it was a memorable and quack-worthy meal. read more

In a city in which dining experiences tend to be at best unven, "The Blue Duckling" stands as a testimonial to how good Bohemian foods can taste. If you want to experience native Czech cuisine when elevated beyond the mass-market institutional slop so commonly encountered, this is the place to visit. I have dined there on each of several trips to the city and have enjoyed each visit. As the name suggestd, duck is their specialty; and I am one who especially loves duck in all its incarnations. And I have enjoyed each variant of the fowl I tried there, ranging from the more traditional preparation to, most recently, the house specialty featuring a plum sauce made from that Slavic staple, Slivovice or plum brandy. My visits have all been to the location in Mala Strana, directly across the street from the Mandarin Hotel. Apparently there is a second location (I believe it is in Old Town) which I have not been to. It would appear that the ambiance there is quite different, and that would account for some of the negative comments about the venue. At the Mala Strana location, the atmosphere is warm and cozy. Tables tend to be distributed around the two storeys of the restaurant in small rooms or nooks and crannies that make for a quiet and intimate setting. The decor is attractive in an old-world style and service is congenial and attentive. This location would be more inviting for romantic couples than for large groups as some other reviewer have suggested. They must be referring to the second location. Commensurate with the elevated quality you will find prices higher than most restaurants featuring native cuisine. But the cost is far from outrageous. On my most recent visit my meal included a bowl of potato soup (turned out must tastier than it sounds) and a duck entree. The bill came to around 700 Kc including tip (a bottle of Pellegrino, but no wine). All things considered....food quality, service, ambiance.....I think of this meal as a relative bargain read more
