Several Months ago, I came into the branch to inquire about borrowing money. After waiting for several minutes, I was simply told they couldn't help me because I didn't have an appointment. There was no effort to accommodate me or even offer alternatives beyond that. More recently, I came back to open an account with my son, expecting a better experience. Instead, I was told to just go online and do it myself. Again, no real assistance or willingness to help in person. Wescom used to go out of their way to support their members, which is why I stayed loyal for over two decades. Unfortunately, something has clearly changed and not for the better. Customer service now feels impersonal and dismissive, which is very disappointing for a long-time member.

BE WARY OF OPENING A CD ONLINE. THEY CAN ASSIST YOU VIA PHONE EFFECTIVELY TO OPEN A CD…read more I applied as a new member to open and fund a CD online and to opening a savings account online. While I knew that a $25 minimum would need to be in the savings account, I had understood this could be funded separately from the CD account I opened, once my membership was approved. However, the CU diverted $25 to my savings automatically instead of allowing me to fund it separately. This meant that my CD wasn't fully funded and so diverted ALL my CD funds automatically to my savings account. I logged into the portal same day of CU membership approval $25 to fund the CD and was told via pop up message I'd need to call the credit union to initiate the process. When I reached out via their CU portal same day, the response also indicated a call was needed. When I was able to get ahold of the credit union by phone a week later, I was told that the CD needed to be funded the same day. I informed them of my efforts to do so, but this wasn't sufficient. They DID close my current CD and opened and funded a new one for me, and assured me there would be no fees (this recently occurred, so I'll update this review if any fees come later). While I'm ultimately satisfied with the result and do think phone support is effective and transparent, opening a CD online is not customer friendly and doesn't clearly disclose key details about how money will be handled, nor does it easily allow you to fund your account or transfer funds using online-only methods. Interestingly, by making it automatic that $25 is untouchable within the savings account until closure, they are making it automatic that the $15 membership is waived, ultimately SAVING members money. The issue, for me, is that it's unclear upon funding a new CD that the $25 will be diverted to the savings account, and will stall the funding of the CD. While I quickly determined the issue the day my application was approved, it's not easily remedied via online means. A call to the CU is needed.

Why isn't this banking institution unable to stop a pending fraudulous charge to save $ and aggravation to client and banking institution? My 86-year-old mother has been a member of SchoolsFirst since 2011 and each time she has visited this branch, all the staff have been very kind and accommodating. She has had to replace her debit card a few times and her original checking account was compromised, so they were able to help her cancel the old account and set up a new one with a new account number. The latest visit was with Bolivar, one of the credit union onsite bankers. My mother and I came to visit because her online banking account somehow got hacked and it reduced the functionality. Bolivar said the online account somehow had view only status so it was changed back to be fully functional again. He also suggested that the user name and password be changed, so we were able to get that done as well, using the credit union's computer. We had a very productive visit, and since my mother has some mobility issues, Bolivar was kind enough to help her walk to the front door before we left. Talk about going above and beyond! We will always have SchoolsFirst as our primary financial institution because we get 5-star service with every visit. Once again, if you qualify for membership, RUN don't walk, to the nearest branch and open an account.

I explained to Michelle Orellana the documents I needed in order to file a claim with the GAP insurance company. She immediately expressed her sympathy, saying, "I'm sorry for your loss," and went above and beyond to help. Michelle even closed her lane so she could focus on gathering the documents I needed. She asked me to take a seat while she prepared everything, and about 10 minutes later she called me back to the window with all the necessary paperwork ready. Her kindness, professionalism, and willingness to help during a stressful situation meant a lot. It was truly a pleasure working with her and with Kinecta Federal Credit Union.

I decided to go there in person to open my account, as opposed to opening an account online. I'm glad I did, as the Relationship Manager I dealt with, Christian Velasco, provided friendly and attentive service, which gave me a very favorable first impression of this credit union. Christian took all of my information to create my new account, along with giving him my opening deposit. Before I left, he gave me some documentation with my new account information such as my member number and account numbers for the savings and checking accounts. While I was there, I placed an order for an initial supply of checks, which was free. :-) I received the debit card and checks less than two weeks later. The one thing about this particular branch that I found a little frustrating was getting through the security doors, both entering and exiting. There is an outside door and then you have to go through another security door to get inside the main lobby. At first, I struggled to get through the second security door and I was afraid I might get trapped in that small space between the outer and inner doors. :-O But, I managed to get through them, both coming and going, thank goodness. If you're in the area and want to open an account with this credit union, be sure to ask for Christian Velasco. He'll treat you very well! :-)
